The main character named Marina Jay

Jamison, was severely disfigured by her father’s actions, is trying to fit in at a new high school as well as finding her own

identity. She was accidentally hit in the face with acid thrown by her father; this significantly

damages her face and her identity.

The reader is led to believe that finding your identity in

adolescence is difficult, especially on your own…

“Teenagers Identity Crises and Procrastination” by Timothy A. Pychyl.

Pychyl explains what Identity is and how it relates

to teenagers. He and a university student, whom

just completed his M.A. and is now in a Ph.D. program,

Matthew Shanahan collected data from

undergraduate students. The results were as he

expected. The ego identity development was negatively

linked with delay.

Knowing who we are benefits us in terms of the persistent pursuit of our goals. We are led to consider that if we know who we are it benefits us in

pursuing our goals.

“The Archetypes” written by Marina Diamandis and sung by Marina and the diamonds. Marina Diamandis created an alter ego, as such, called Electra Heart as a project for her album released in 2012.

The lyrics, “I can be anyone” and “a study in

identity and illusion”, she means that finding your

identity is like a project.. it takes time to develop and create. These lyrics relate to the ongoing teen issue

as teenagers experience an identity crisis and feel the

same towards Marina’s lyrics and feelings expressed through Electra’s character.

Marina is trying to express that adolescence isn’t easy and that teenagers may go through the experiences of being different

people and others influence today’s teenager’s identity.
