Dear Folks,

Today, Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the week called “Holy.” My heavens, it has been a fast run through this penitential season, marked by many many blessings to marriage, religious, and single life along with diaconate and priesthood. Enclosed are some of the scheduled events for Holy Week. God bless those of our families going away for Easter and those coming to us. May the angels watch over you in your travels. As always, let

us pray for one another. 1. Confessions: Mon-Wednesday 8:00 PM.Thursday, following the 7:30 Holy Thursday Mass. Friday, after the 3:00 Stations of the Cross and following the 7:30 Good Friday Services. Saturday Morning, 10-12:00.

2. Friday, Stations of the Cross at 7:30pm Friday, Divine Mercy Devotions (beginning of the Divine Mercy Novena) . Good Friday Services, …. PM.

3. Saturday, Confessions 10-12. Blessing of Easter Baskets at 12:00. Easter Egg Hunt at 2-4:00pm. Blessing of Easter Food at Noon in the Church. Easter Vigil, …. PM.

4. Easter Sunday, Sunday Mass Schedule. For Palm Sunday we have the Poem by GK Chesterton, “The Donkey.”

The Donkey

G.K.Chesterton

When fishes flew and forests walked And figs grew upon thorn,

Some moment when the moon was blood Then surely I was born.

With monstrous head and sickening cry

And ears like errant wings, The devil's walking parody On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,

Of ancient crooked will; Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,

I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour; One far fierce hour and sweet:

There was a shout about my ears, And palms before my feet.

Congratulations goes out to the parish boys basketball team who recently won the Division 3 Basketball Tournament… for the second year in a row! Way to go fellas. Coach Charles Marooney. Players: Philip Shadyac , Nick Shadyac, Kyle Dargis, Will Warden, Sean Roche, Morgan Maybach, John Paccassi, Riley Olsen, and Liam Heppard. I think we should consider flunking these kids so we can send them back for third Tournament victory next year… Ha! Ha! Well done. Collegiate Answer: The two popes who were also physicians were: Gerbert of Aurillac (Pope Sylvester II) d. 1003, and Peter the Spaniard (Pope John XXI) d. 1277. Collegiate Question. The busiest restaurant in Warrenton has three crosses that can be found on its interior walls. What is that restaurant? And, who is it’s manager?

Greetings! Please join me in congratulating the following student parishioners who earned spots on the Paul VI High School Honor Roll for 2nd Quarter grades:

Honor Roll- Logan Ancona, Jennie Catts, Candace Gearhart, Caitlin Martinez, Catherine Pozo-Olano, Juan Carlos Pozo-Olano, and Andrew Toske. Principal's Honor Roll- Madison Barnett, John Mullin, Madelyn Page, Callie Redmond, Abigail Reeves and Michael Toske. A big thank you to our Maintenance Director, Dawn Wimer, for pulling together a meeting with representatives of the Diocese and parish finance committee concerning school safety and a new emergency door lock system for classrooms and other parish doors. Michael Simler, the Vice-President of the company, SSI Guardian, declared our security measures already in place (bullet resistance glass, security cameras, Crisis Plans, regular tornado, fire, earthquake and intruder drills, buzzer entry) are more advanced than most of the schools he deals with daily. That makes us feel good, because Mr. Simler was a Capitol police captain and a security advisor to the government. Hopefully, the Finance Committee will seriously consider this security upgrade. Remember, during Holy Week we will dismiss school at 11:30 on Holy Thursday, with NO EXTENDED DAY SERVICES. School will commence after Easter Break on Monday, April 4, a full day. Parents are reminded of Terra Nova, the Diocesan standardized testing week, is April 18-22 for grades 3-7. Please have students present and on time every day that week.Have a blessed Holy Week and Easter break!

We are having a “Used Book Sale” to benefit St. John School Library on May 21 & 22. This will be outside on the lawn across from the church. Please put all of the books you plan

to donate into small boxes and bring them to the school after 3:30pm. A school family has offered to store the books until the used book sale, but requests that the books be put into small boxes to maximize the storage space. Our ‘Used Book Sale” will ROCK with your help! Thank You! (The Knights of Columbus are donating all of their profits from their Spaghetti Dinner to the school Library).

Thank you to all the families who have registered for St. John Preschool for the 2016-2017 school year! Please contact the Preschool office for registration and tour information: 540-

Every year during the magnificent Easter Vigil liturgy, St. John the Evangelist and parishes throughout the world welcome adults into full communion with Christ and his Church. Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them.

Please pray for St. John's RCIA candidates who will come into full communion with Christ and His church this Easter Vigil.

We will continue our Bible Timeline Study with James: Pearls for Wise Living, an eleven week study. We meet in Mercy Hall from 7pm to 9pm each week. This study is for anyone who has struggled to live a truly Christian Life, as "James" offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances. Don't worry about being unable to to attend our session metings each week, as the registration process will allow you to watch the videos online at your convenience. To sign up for this study please go to the Parish website to register on line with Ascenscion Press. In case of inclement weather, we will follow the Fauquier County “after school” cancellations.

Save The Date St. John the Evangelist Catholic School will be holding their annual Spring Spectacular Fundraiser on April 8th at Fauquier Springs Country Club in Warrenton. Come join us for a relaxing Evening of food, fun, auctions, prizes and of course to help support the wonderful students of St. John’s. Your services, products or business would be greatly appreciated. Your business will be advertised in the spring spectacular program and on our two websites in recognition for your generosity. Are You Interested in Learning more about the Bible?

Come join fellow St. John's parishioners in deeper companionship with Christ through lectio divina, "where

the Word of God is so read and meditated that it becomes prayer" (Catechism, 1177).

St. John the Evangelist launched the Bible Study series offered by Ascension Press in 2012. These studies are being offered again; but this time with a twist. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below.

Whenyou visit the parish website www.sje1.org and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website.

These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209.

The first Study, started in October, was “The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation.” The 24 lessons in

“The Bible Timeline” guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative.

In 2013, “Matthew: The King and his Kingdom,” another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in “The Bible Timeline.” The gospel of Matthew

explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was “Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom” **in 2014. This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the

Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon

In the early summer of 2015 we offered “Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother” in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals

Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives.

In the fall of 2015 “Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come” an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately

connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into

every time we celebrate the Mass.

In 2016 the Bible Study group covered “James: Pearls for Wise Living” described as a “book of wisdom.” James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the

fledgling church in the face of persecution.

“Knowledge of the poor and needy is not gained by pouring over books

or in discussions with politicians, but by visiting the slums where they live, sitting by the bedside of the dying, feeling the cold they feel and learning from their lips the causes of their woes.” Blessed Frederic Ozanam, 1845 Vincentians are blessed with the opportunity to fulfill the great commandments to Love God and Love Neighbor. Your help allows us to take advantage of the opportunity and truly become the hands and feet of Our Lord. Thank you for supporting us in this mission. St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 20 March 2016

www.sje1.org

Celebrate the end of the Lenten Season with your fellow parishioners as our children enjoy St. John’s FOURTH annual parish-wide Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 26, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on the parish grounds. The shotgun start to collect the eggs will begin at approximately 2:15 pm and end at approximately 3:15PM. Light refreshments will follow in Mercy Hall with a special appearance by the Easter Bunny. To participate, simply bring a sufficient number of Easter baskets to collect the hidden eggs. Parents will FIRST congregate in Mercy Hall with their children for instructions, followed by a blessing by Father Gould PRIOR to the start of the hunt. For more information, please contact our Knights of Columbus Council Church

Director, at (703) 735-3262.

In the event of inclement weather, all activities will move into Mercy Hall.

Attend our open house to learn more about Camp St. Charles. Join us for lunch, a tour, a ride on the giant swing and a opportunity to meet the staff of Camp St. Charles. For over 60 years, thousands of children have been making friends, learning to work together and developing an appreciation for Creation while camping out, riding horses, working their way through a challenge course, trying archery, paddling on the river, making art projects and lots of other activities in beautiful Southern Maryland. Fully Accredited with the American Camp Association and certified by the State of Maryland, Camp St. Charles has been run by the Salvatorian Fathers and Brothers and Lay Salvatorians for over 60 years. New families may save on tuition by registering at our open house. For more information, directions and to sign up for an open house, see our web site: www.campstcharles.org or call us at 301-934-8799 or email [email protected].
