Why is it important for

learners to make an

INFORMED subject choice?

• To keep future career options open

• Grade 9 may be too early to choose a career, but if you choose wisely now it will allow flexibility when the time is right

• Subjects must be studied over the next three years – it must be one your child will enjoy and will cope with

• Minimise the possibility of wanting to change subjects in Grades 11 and 12 because it means catching up with subject content

• Promote the best possible pass at Grade 12 level

12

MATHEMATICS MATHEMATICAL LITERACY

Deals with more complex problem solving that is not necessarily encountered in everyday life, like trigonometry, algebra and basic calculus

Aimed more at the practical application of mathematical principles and concepts in everyday life like calculating areas, volumes and circumferences, calculating profit and loss, drawing up a budget, etc.

It is more difficult and many students need to take on extra after school lessons to pass

It is much easier to pass and you will be able to use this knowledge in everyday life. REMEMBER that a pass in mathematical literacy is better than a fail in mathematics

Learners who take this subject are more likely to be accepted for a wider range of tertiary qualifications. HOWEVER, a mere “pass isn’t sometimes enough to meet requirements at a tertiary institution

You will be automatically excluded from degrees at a university such as accounting, medicine, engineering and IT HOWEVER, there are many fields of study available to learners who take mathematical literacy

Page 13: Hoërskool CR Swart€¦ · •Making this choice can be stressful! •It has a huge impact on your child’s schooling, future career and tertiary study options 2

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING • Departmental requirements: A learner must

obtain 50% and above in grade 9 to do Mathematics

• Learners who are progressed will not be allowed to do Mathematics and must therefore do Mathematical Literacy

• Learners and parents are strongly advised to consider the recommendation from the school and mathematics teacher
