It’s been a tumultuous year. It wasgetting like “Pet Cemetery”around here. Right after Mother’s
Day, I had to put “Mazy”, my 13 yearold Weimariner, down. Then 4 weeksago, “Sam” my 28 year old geldingwas sent to run free in heaven, leav-ing “Shotsi” who was born on theranch, alone, for the first time in her11 years on earth.
She took “Sam’s” leaving so bad,she would not leave the spot wherehe went down for 5 day, except to eat.
So I called Revonda, my editorand told her I had to get anothercompanion for “Shotsi” and wherewould she suggest. The answer wasSacred Grounds Rescue outside ofWikieup. We went down there with a
few friends. Two weeks ago. Bob Eldorado
met us as we pulled in and showed usaround. The animals were in goodshape, but the rescue itself needs alot of work and cleaning up. He’sdoing what he can, but needs volun-teers to spiff up the place. Wewalked and looked at the horses, goats, burros, ponies, and I wished Icould get a home for every one ofthem. We even met “Zoey”, the littlewhite baby burro which is comingalong great and is so cute and cud-dly. Then we went to a corral thatheld two gelded brown burros, 6-8years old that were former sheep/goat herd guards. I fell in love withone of them and made an on the spot
decision to tell Bob I wanted him.Three days later my friend Kathy
and I left our ranch with the horsetrailer. As we pulled into the rescuegrounds, all the animals seemed toknow what the trailer was for. Afriend was either coming orgoing. The place came alive withwhinnies, bahing, and snort -ing. Knowing I had to help Bob insome way, I brought two corral pan-els I wasn’t using and 3 feed andwater buckets. We loaded up myburro, which we dubbed, “Sami” inhonor of the departed “Sam” anddrove home. It was like a 3-ring cir-cus when I pulled into the ranch. Thedogs and “Shotsi” came running. Weunloaded “Sami” and left all to get toknow each other, separated by afence of course. After 5 days, I wasleading “Sami” for a walk, and“Shotsi” went nuts because we werewalking away from her, so I let“Sami” and “Shotsi” out and theywere like two kids, running, bucking, and chasing each other up and down
our pasture hills. All was well in theanimal world again.
If anyone out there has extratime, money, equipment that they canspare, call Bob at Sacred GroundsRescue.
He can use all the help he canget. He’s doing a great thing, and ifyou are looking for another “family”member to add to your ranch, checkout Sacred Grounds first. Now let’sbring on the new year with love.

Along the Way...with Pastor Roger Gorham,
Cowboy Church of Mohave County
www.HorsenAroundTheMountains.com – Page 3
In Genesis 3, we find the devilasking this of Eve. She knew theanswer. So did Adam. They
ignored what God said and did asthey pleased.
Thou shalt not kill. That meansmurder. God made provision formanslaughter, but premeditatedkilling is murder. We have kickedGod and His Word out of our societywith hardly even a whimper. Whyshould we be amazed when evilrears its ugly head and kills twentyschool kids. The guy that did thatwas just plain evil.
When we think of those peopleshot down in Newton, we think of thehorror and the tragedy of it all andthe wicked evil of the killer. Surlyhis sin is heavy. We would not thinkof ourselves as guilty as he is. Wemight not be perfect, but we ain’t asbad as him.
Let’s check out what God hassaid.
King James Version (KJV)Exodus 20:1 And God spake allthese words, saying, 1 I am the Lordthy God, which have brought theeout of the land of Egypt, out of thehouse of bondage. 3 Thou shalt haveno other gods before me. 4 Thoushalt not make unto thee any gravenimage, or any likeness of any thingthat is in heaven above, or that is inthe earth beneath, or that is in thewater under the earth. 5 Thou shaltnot bow down thyself to them, norserve them: for I the Lord thy Godam a jealous God, visiting the iniq -uity of the fathers upon the childrenunto the third and fourth generationof them that hate me; 6 And shewingmercy unto thousands of them thatlove me, and keep my command -ments. 7 Thou shalt not take thename of the Lord thy God in vain; forthe Lord will not hold him guiltlessthat taketh his name in vain. 8 Re -member the sabbath day, to keep itholy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But theseventh day is the sabbath of theLord thy God: in it thou shalt not doany work, thou, nor thy son, nor thydaughter, thy manservant, nor thymaidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thystranger that is within thy gates: 11For in six days the Lord madeheaven and earth, the sea, and allthat in them is, and rested the
seventh day: wherefore the Lordblessed the sabbath day, andhallowed it. 12 Honour thy father andthy mother: that thy days may belong upon the land which the Lordthy God giveth thee. 13 Thou shaltnot kill. 14 Thou shalt not commitadultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal. 16Thou shalt not bear false witnessagainst thy neighbour. 17 Thou shaltnot covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’swife, nor his manservant, nor hismaidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass,nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
I know I’m guilty of at least nineout of the ten. How about you? God’sWord says if we break one we areguilty of all of them. That makes meguilty.
Every man has been guilty sinceAdam. The penalty is death, livingunder the strain of a cursed earth, and sickness and dyin’... evil allaround us and in us too. There areno small sins, white lies, or innocentaffairs, the penalty is eternal death.
The Good News, is that our Godhas provided a way of escape fromour sin problem and its penalty. Heis a great God that loves us and willgive us a free pass if we will take it.
God accepted the shed blood ofJesus Christ, God in the flesh, aspayment for all of our sins so we cango free into eternal life with God. Itis a free gift that we sure don’tdeserve, but God gives it to us freelyif we will take it.
We take it by admitting to Godwe have broken His Laws and areguilty. We ask Him for mercy toforgive us, because of what Jesus didin our place. We believe it is a donedeal because the Bible says so andwe believe it.
God then immediately seals thedeal by putting His Spirit in us to seeto it that we make it through life toHeaven with Him. The evidence thatit is real shows up in the rearviewmirror of your life. You see the junkthat God crowds out of your life asHe is gettin’ you cleaned up to live inHis house.
There’s only two zip codes ineternity... one for Heaven, the otherfor hell. What is yours....?? AlongThe Way......

Have Fun But Keep it SafeGoals For 2013
Page 4 – Horse ‘n Around the Mountains, Inc.
Well we made it through anotheryear and we now have to makeplans for the new year. I like to
think ahead on what I would like to accom-plish with the horses. I would really like to getPeter, my yearling colt, working with longlines training him to drive in the arena. Iwould like him to do better at standing at hal-ter. I would like him by the end of this year tobe able to be saddled easy and work well inthe snaffle with the lines.
I will take some lessons myself this yearfor riding western pleasure and equitation. Ifound a professional and will start in Apriland go once a month.
When Peter is ready I need to be readyas well. He is top quality and I have to be atthe top of my game to help him be a willingwonderful show horse.
Keep myself fit and healthy so I canenjoy my riding to the best of my ability. Ihave been doing a jazzercise class and run-ning/jogging on the off days.
It is very hard for me to ride well whenI’m not feeling 100%. Now that I have reachedmy 50’s I really want to continue riding asmuch as I can. I still would like to be compet-itive. It just can’t be done if you’re 20-30pounds over weight.
Now you know all my plans for this com-ing year. I will keep you posted on how I stickwith it. I hope you all make plans for you andyour horse this year.
2012 was a hard year with great loss. Ihope this coming year will be a bit easier.
I lost two great show horses this pastyear, but I will keep my eyes on the future.
We learn much in loss, we learn toappreciate the wonderful times we do have
not only with our horses but with ourfamilies and friends. So Happy New to all,
may it be the best year ever! Have funand keep it safe!
Have Fun and Keep it Safe. ____________________

Livin’ the Dream
When I look back at all of thehorses that I have owned, Ican’t help but have a
favorite. It’s funny how horses, likedogs, seem to choose their masters. The horse that chose me is my littleBuckskin and White Paint, Teddy. His registered name is Triple K’sSpirit Thunder, but he had beennicknamed Teddy Bear by his previ-ous owner due to his quiet, puppydog demeanor. His ad displayed hisrider laying on him, crawling underhim, and just generally loving onhim the way one might love on agreat big dog. After his purchase Idecided to stay with the nameTeddy, as the thought of learning toride on “Spirit Thunder” was morethan a little intimidating.
Teddy taught me to ride in theway that a patient, tolerant trail part-ner would. He was ever so patientwith my beginner clumsy hands and
my imbalance in the saddle. Henever bucked or reared, and onlyfollowed the trail when my apparentinability to direct him sent mixedsignals. He has walked when hewanted to run, due largely to mynervousness at moving at a higherrate of speed. Teddy is a SpottedSaddle horse and has some prettyimpressive gaits. Being gaited how-ever he had been prevented fromcantering, as apparently the canteris frowned upon by many gaitedhorse enthusiasts. I’m told that thecanter is an easier gait than the run-ning and flat walks, so to allow itimpedes their desire to stay in asmoother gait.
Now, some three years later,Teddy is finding his lope and heseems to be exhilarated at theopportunity to run and be a younghorse again. My learned balance inthe saddle has given me the confi-dence to stay with him as he clumsi-ly regains the lope that he seems toenjoy so much. Silly as it sounds, hisfirst experience loping since beingmine brought me to tears. Yes, I amgoofy and sentimental......pleasedon’t tell anyone. My love for thissilly little horse exceeds any sensethat I might have. I have no doubtthat this wonderful boy will be withme until one of us takes our lastbreath, he is that special to me.
All that being said, my experi-ence has been that trusting andbonding with your special horse iskey to relaxing and learning to ride.Horses seem to be very adept atreading their riders, and an inexpe-rienced rider will create mischief ina less than patient mount. The
demeanor of a first horse seems tome to be essential to relaxing andlearning to ride without fear. I knowthat some cowboys would disagreeand insist that a real rider can rideany horse. True, no doubt. But thoseof us who come across this wonder-ful pass time at an older age willsurely frown at the idea of beingthrown through the air by a less thanwilling equine partner. Choose yournew horse carefully would be myadvice to my fellow rookie. Takeyour time, listen to trusted friends.Keep your checkbook tucked awayuntil you are sure. And once you find
that horse that has really chosenyou, enjoy the world around youfrom his or her back. Relish thecompany of the horse people whowill come out of the woodwork toshare your passion when you walkinto a room with hay in your hair andmud and manure on your boots.Nothing is more rewarding than tosee the world from the back of yournew best friend.
Thanks again for listening anduntil next month, enjoy the ride!

Say You Saw it in...
If anyone asked me, “what's the one thingthat can change my horses’ performance?”I would have to say “True Collection.” It
completely changes the dynamics of a horse’sperformance. I've been training horses forover 25 years and the one thing I have foundthat makes a difference in how the horserides, turns, backs and follows through withany transition is its ability to naturally collectits self. This takes muscle memory, willing-ness and a skilled individual to help the horsefeel the balance and ease of True Collection. This is not a forced skill that is achieved witha tie down or a constant pull on the bit, butrather, it comes from a place the horseremembers and builds from.
How can I explain the importance oftraining with True Collec tion? There arethree key reasons it is important to under-standing the fundamentals of True Collection. Its necessity, its benefits, and how it isachieved.
I hope these principals put into practicewill help your horse achieve a better partner-ship and clearly change your horses’ per-formance.
The Necessity of CollectionSome horses are anatomically built bal-
anced, flexible, and compact, usually goodmovers, they have a sense of self collection. Then there's the longer backed horse thattend to be looser movers and not as bal-anced, they seem as if their rear end lackspower.
Both types of horse will respond andmove more balanced if they can be collectedfrom the rear forward rather than from the bitback. The more naturally balanced horse willlearn and adjust faster than the one that isless flexible and balanced. I teach this mus-cle memory to all my horses from the groundup. As I move into the saddle it is much easi-er to get what I ask because the horses mus-cle memory is in place and their minds havebeen suppled from the ground up as well. The necessity of collection is to aid the horsein the ability to understand and perform thetask the rider asks. Of course, the horseneeds to learn to be responsive to your legand rein cues as well.
The Benefits of TrueCollection Are Numerous
I teach a horse to round its back and
bring its rear up under itself for balance fromthe ground before I introduce the saddle. Then I continue after I introduce the saddle sothey know it’s OK to feel the saddle tightenand allow their backs to reach up and makecontact. This becomes automatic for them asI continue to build muscle memory andmaneuverability.
When I start riding they already are setup for success.
When a horse achieves True Collectionthey are round, supple, and listening to therider. They have more confidence when theymove because they feel balanced. Theyrespond better to cues because they are men-tally and physically ready for turns, big stops, and controlled forward motion.
One of the great benefits of TrueCollection is the longevity of the horses’ per-formance down the road. Its life is impactedby its ability to move fluidly and balanced.True collection keeps your horse body prop-erly moving, balanced and flexible, leading tostrong muscle support; and a good founda-tion that helps keep your horse moving effi-ciently down the road.
Achieving True CollectionI achieve collection from the ground
right into the saddle with exercises thatinclude lateral flexion, backing in a roundedsupple manner, and also apply Top Line Yoga,a hands on body balancing technique. Theseexercises create muscle memory from theearly stages of training that follow through asI start riding. Lateral flexion is the forerunnerto vertical flexion. Whenever I move thehorse, on or off his back, I work with the intentof creating True Collection. I concentrate onmoving a horse rounded and balanced on theground the same way I would as if I were inthe saddle. When they are ready, meaningbalanced and supple, they are a lot morecomfortable moving with someone on theirback. In the saddle I bend colts, just as I doon the ground, to inhibit forward motion. As Istart asking for more, I feel the muscle mem-ory kick in. They actually set themselves upfor maneuverability. I find that I don't have towork so hard as a rider to get what I'm askingfor. I can feel they are already prepared tomove from the rear forward and then it's allabout keeping them set up and soft in the bri-dle. That is the tricky part. It is important toteach a colt to “give” to pressure by asking
True Collection
and releasing in a timely fashion. A correctresponse or an honest try needs to be reward-ed.
I use the Perfectly Bitless Bridle (see iton my website) to start a colt. It works in thesame way a snaffle bit does. Keep in mind theimportance of giving and taking as you workwith a colt or supple an older horse. I call this“One Dot at a Time” this will boost your suc-cess. Don't ask too much too soon. Allow thecolt or horse to process. Ask with your reinand apply leg pressure to keep them roundedas they disengage the hind quarters andlearn to give to pressure. This process helpsthe horse learn and understand how torespond to what your legs and hands are ask-ing. After these fundamentals are understoodand your horse stays calm and collectedthrough the process then it's time to move on.
I use right left rein pressure for a backup. I call it the loco motion because my handsmake the same motion as arms that connectthe wheels on a train. I set the horse on itsrear and pick up the front feet and ask them tostep back one at a time. I don't pull, I feel theconnection. This keeps the horse from stiffen-ing up. I use a see saw arm and hands to cre-ate a nice head set which leads to a nice lowbalanced back up, and eventually a balanced
stop. I use off set rein pressure, picking upone rein and pulling with the other as I leadthe horse into transitions. This keeps the backrounded, the nose in, and the circle of balanceis achieved. I reward the smallest try, thencontinue to ask and reward. It is imperative toimplement leg cues as you teach rein cues. The horse rides with four feet and we mustride with our legs and hands to get a respon-sive supple collected horse. Without bothlegs and hands, working together, collectioncannot be achieved.
I start with basic rein/leg yielding exer-cises when disengaging the hind quarters, backing, two tracking, and side passing. It isessential to always give as the horse respondscorrectly. Timing is the key to success.Training sessions should be started with agoal and a purpose. It is important to usepatience and allow the horse to processbefore going on. You will know this from hisreaction. A horse will lick and chew whenthey’ve “got it”. Find True Collection andstart getting the ride you've always dreamedof.

On December 15th, 2012, mybrother Boone called to tellus that our little brother
Lance had passed away. I felt like Icould taste the sadness and pain. Itcouldn’t be Lance, I’m the oldest, itshould’ve been me. These thoughtsand others raced thru my head as Ishook with uncontrollable sobs.
Lance was born on July 21, 1961.He was the 5th of 6 boys and a babysister, born to Monty and MinaroseOwens. He is survived by his par-ents, (the oldest, myself) Jimi,Howard, Boone, Mark, (those are theolder brothers), Joseph and ofcourse Sara (sissy).
He always ran before he walkedin everything he did. While otherswere thinking about doing things, hewas already doing them. It was likehe didn’t have time to slow down andhe’d try to take on the world at leasttwice a day! It would cause him trou-ble in his young years, but it alsomade him strong.
He married, had 2 daughtersand a son. He loved his family andwas very protective and caring. Hisson, Jason, turned out to be a veryfine young man and loved his Dad.They’d do martial arts, fishing, hunt-ing and other things like most Dad’sdo. He taught him the value of hardwork and helping others.
I remember Lance’s sense ofhumor! He loved a good joke, or afunny story and told a lot of them.
Most of the time, they were aboutsome crazy thing he did! He’d get sotickled telling it, that he’d be laugh-ing and trying to talk and had tearsrunning down his face.
One story went like this!!! Hewas asleep in a motel when he wasawakened by a noise outside. Whenhe looked out, someone was goingthru his truck. When he threw thedoor open, the man took off withLance in hot pursuit. After a block orso, he gave up the chase ‘cause herealized he was in a strange town, ablock from the motel and was barebeamed and buck naked!! It was afast trip back to the motel and I canstill see him laughing as he told thestory.
He had put on quite a bit ofweight, but he was the athlete, hewas invincible. Then came the call. Amassive heart attack, had taken ason, brother and a very dear friend.I have to turn this over to my wife, asI seem to have something in both myeyes that make them tear up.
Well Brother, we’ve been thruthe River, over the Mountains andback again. ( With a minor detourEast on I-40 after that Brahma Bulljumped the fence thinking he wasgoing back to Texas.) It’s been quitea party. Lance was Love. Don’t getme wrong, he was not perfect and noangel, but he was Lance. Anyonewho knew him, knows what thatmeans…..
He loved family around andhated to be alone. That makes hispassing extra sad, ‘cause he wasalone when he passed. He was try-ing to help our daughter Angie,‘cause he knew she was strugglingand had just offered her a job work-ing with him. He was a loving Uncle, but also a much needed father figureto many of his nieces and nephews,as well as his baby sister Sara.
This was a man who was alwaysthere when needed. He correctedmore than one of our kids, but it wasdone with love and to show themwhat they could be if they just tried. It wasn’t done ‘cause he could whip‘em (although, yes he could), it wasdone because he didn’t want them todeal with the life he had lived fromtime to time in his youth. It wasimportant that they learned from hismistakes, so they didn’t have to gothru what he had. Family was every-thing to him.
There is no way to express theenormous loss we suffered onDecember 15th. We all have ourown memories and grief to dealwith. Thank you brother Lance forbeing in our hearts and comfortingus, this in our hour of need. You areand will always be very loved andmissed.
My brother loved life, loved liv-ing it to the fullest and devil take thehindmost. I’ll remember all this aswell as his laughter, or that smile
when he was tickled at somethingthat happened. As I said, we all haveour own memories. There is aFacebook page set up in his memo-ry for this very reason. Please shareyour tales of love and laughter withus. He would want us to rememberthe things that made us laugh andbrings a smile to our faces. Weremember!

Lance, Me and the Bad Brahma Bull
It started out to be just another day. Lanceand I had fed the horses and pushed someheifers out of the holding pasture into the
water lot an don out into another rpasturewhere they’d stay until they calved out in earlyMarch.
Lance is my brother! The fifth of six boysand a girl, and possibly the most complex! Attimes, ya never knew where you stood, onlythat you loved each other. That was never inquestion.
Anyway, he’d come to live with us on theranch where I worked. His family, wife Teresa, son Jason, and daughter Casey, came too! Wehad a three-bedroom trailer, my three daugh-ters, Angie, Nikki and Lynn, along with my wifeDonna and me. Things were close, but weweathered it all real well and had a lot of goodtimes. You never knew wht was gonna happen,‘cause when Donna and Teresa got together, there was no telling’ what they’d come up withnext!
Well Lance went to work on the ranch, thatI’d worked on befoe, while it wa the HartDivision of Babbits. Now it belonged to CTI
Trucking. Sonny and Delma Walmark were themanagers and we enjoyed ourselves immense-ly. Lance had been there about two weeks andwas really making a hand. I was shocked ‘causeI didn’t even know he could ride!
We did some small chores around thebarn and waited ‘cause we had eight bullscoming in from Texas to put with our first calfheifers. All we knew was they were Brahmers,100% thru and thru! Finally, about three p.m.,we saw the dust on the dirt road, stirred up bythe truck. Our Brahmer bulls had arrived!
After we unloaded them, we stood outsidethe corral as they stared at us. To say the least,we were not prepared for what we had. Theywere all a smoky gray color, which turneddarker as it went over some of the biggesthumps I’d ever seen. I believe six had hornsand two wee Muleys (nornless).
They were huge, 1800 to 2200 pounds, and as tall as our saddle horses, with big fullears that stuck out forever. Their eyes stole theshow, throughout, with a menacing stare thattold you they wouldn’t be quite as gentle as ourHereford bulls. They looked and act like wild
deer and I thought to myself, I’ll bet those boysin Texas were glad to be rid of these bulls.”Lance and I looked at Sonny, and at each other, then slowly shook our heads.
After the truck left, we were gonna pushthese bulls over to the pull paste to turn themout. Now it’s roughly two miles to the freeway(I-r0) from the ranch headquarters, where yougo through a gate and under the freeway; thenthrough another gate, down a fence along thefreeway and into the patter. No problem, right?Dead wrong!
In the first place, I was riding my ownhorse, Jake, while Lance was on a sorrel horseof the ranche’s called Red. I can’t rememberwhat horse Sonny rode, but it would have beena good one. Delma would pull the horses trail-er around and we’d trailer the horses home.Smooth and easy, go the plans of normal man.
In the second place, t go under the free-way, we had to go through a tunnel that was (1)narrow, (2) low and (3) dark.
We’d agreed to go slow and easy, with meahead of the bulls to slow them down andLance and Sonny easing’ along behind. Well,
Sonny opened up the gate and those Brahmerscame through on a high lope with two things ontheir mind. (1) don’t slow down, and (2) getplumb away from these cowboys!
When Jake saw those humps and ears allheaded for him, he did something he’s neverdone before or since! He freaked! He ran ortrotted side-ways, all the way to the tunnel! Hewouldn’t take his eyes off those bulls and wassnorting’ and blown’ rollers through his noseand mile a minute. i mean he wa some upset!
Once in a while, a bull would charge ourhorses to let us know they meant business.Needless to say, we believed them and kep ourdistance. At this point, you couldn’t have putone of those horses within roping distance witha D-9 cat!
Delma had opened the gate leading intothe tunnel as she went by in the pickup andtrailer, so I faded back to help push the bullsthrough. Then it happened!! Seven Braymerswent through the tunnel, but one absolutelyrefused. He bellered, dropped his head andcharged Lance and Red. Very politely, but with
Bad Brahma Bull (Cont on Pg 8)
Of course its all just an educat-ed guess, but by our recordsBaby Zoey will turn 4 months
old January 19th, 2013. And manychanges will hit Baby Zoey at thisage. For one, normally, her intake ofmilk will start dropping off and herbody will begin depending more onthe intake of hay. In our case, we willcontinue giving her milk just 2 timesdaily for an extra 2-4 weeks. Ourreason being that when only aninfant she went almost a whole weekwith no milk at all causing a drasticloss of weight and near death. Butthanks to some caring people whocalled the Rescue, her life wassaved.
But even as big as she’s gettingwe are worried about this crazy coldweather that is leaving the watertroughs frozen every morning. So webuilt Baby Zoey her own house, insu-lated off the ground with her owndoor and a much larger pen. Wewere worried that without Mommaburro to cuddle up with and sharebody heat, that our Baby Zoey mightfreeze. But she doing great and eat-ing hay like it was candy. And shehas some friends, on both sides ofher pen are small goat herds. On herright are the Aladdin’s Nubien fam -ily that are already having babiesand on her left is Stanley’s Pigmyfamily. (No new babies yet but anyday now). I wanted to have more pic-tures of Baby Zoey and her handlerAshley but we’ve been so very busyhere at the Rescue.
Our Baby Zoey has already beenadopted by some friends that willkeep her 6 months out of the year attheir ranch and 6 months at theRescue. Their names are Jim and
Nancy and you’ll meet them nextissue. I wrote another article a fewmonths ago about Burros and thatevery ranch should have one. Wehave a beautful big Brown Burro, he’svery gentle and a gelding so he’spretty mello and an easy keeper. His name is Bob and he is availablefor adoption. He actually was a goatherding burro previously, out thereto protect the goats. Or we haveother burros available from time totime, just give us a call.
A new friend of the Rescue,Brenda, just adopted Nitty, a bigbeaut iful paint mare I’ve been rid-ing and getting ready for adoption.I’m sure going to miss her, she was agreat trail horse. But that is what wedo, now I’ll have to pick out anotherhorse and begin working on herpeople skills, and get ready to sad-dle another one up.
If your interested in helping theRescue, either by volunteering sometime or contributing materials need-ed to keep the animals safe, give usa call. We are really searching forsome new Sponsors for 2013, maybeyou have a business we can helppromote or you can become amonthly sponsor sending in $20,$50, whatever you can afford. It allhelps feed these animals and youralways welcome to come visit theRescue, just call and make an appt. You can reach us at...

sufficient speed , they moved and he jumpedthe fence and took off eastbound, uncon-cerned with all commotion and confusion hewas causing with motorists as they went driv-ing by.
We gave our horses a breather anddecided Delma would drive down the freewayand get ahead of our runaway, while we tookthe fence down., went through, put it up, andthen played catch-up with the Texas Tornado!
She took off and so did we. Finally, through the fence, we hit a high lope up I-40,which only cussed more confusion among thetravelers, tourists and truckers! One trucker hithis air horn, which really pelted. Jake and Redwere already plumb nervous, and I was sureLance and I could stop them this side ofWinslow, which was thirty-five miles away! Ilooked at him as our horses flew down I-40 andhe was laughing! “Ain’t this great? I didn’tknow cowboying was so much fun!”
I immediately decided my brother had
lost his mind. Trailering up 2,000 pounds ofmad Brahmer bull on horses, whose onlythought was pulling a runaway on an interstatefreeway, while dodging idiots in cars, whoweren’t even slowing down, and acted likeKamakazi pilots, was not my idea of fun. I guessit’s all in how you look at it!!
Anyway, we finally got ahead of old “holi-er-than-thou” bull and started back towardshim to send him back to our part of the state ofArizona, if we could. We’d even got brave (well, you can call it that. if you what to). We had ourropes down and were prepared to drop a loopon him if the necessity arose. (Tired horses, 30’ropes and three harebrained cowboys mixedwith a bull whose only intention was to doexactly the opposite of what we wanted andwanted and wouldn’t hesitate to take us on.)
Well, I don’t know about the other guys, but I was never accused of behind bright!Luckily, the bull had had enough. With one lastglance in our direction, he faced south, stood
flat-footed, jumped and cleared a five-strand,five-foot barbered wire fence into the pasturewe’d put the heifers in that morning.
“Tweren’t nothing nothing’ left to do, ‘ceptload the horses and drive back to the ranch.(With a short stop at Twin Arrows for cokes, chew and a candy bar.) We was all disgustedand knew he had to come out of that pasture, but we were tired, the horses were tired, andMr. Brahmer was hot and mad.
We drove home and called it a day. That night, while sitting in our easy
chairs, Lance was laughing’ and telling’ thestory to the gals and actin’ like we was haven’fun (he did and still was). Sittin’ in that chair, Icould at least act like it was fun. I’m sure wenever felt the need to add to, or expound onany of it. After all, just in a day’s work for twotough no nonsense cowboys. (Yeah, like “No-Nonsense” pantyhose, we was stetchin’ itmighty thin!)
Next morning’ after breakfast, and afterdoin’ chores, we went in for coffee at Sonnyand Delma’s to plan the capture of ole runaway. We decided when we found him, we’d pushsome heifers with him, and right into the corralwe’d go. Separate ‘em and load and haul him tothe bull pasture. He’d have cooled off lastnight., we were intelligent beings and he was abull with the intellect of a cedar post. No prob-lem!!!?
We’d kept the same horses from the nightbefore and they were well-rested and ready togo. We rode north toward the freeway until wepicked up his tracks and finlly tacked him to asmall herd of around twenty heifers. We easedaround them and stated back to the corralswith our prize. We even almost roke our armspattin’ ourselves on the back, laughing’ ‘bouthow easy it was and how dumb he was!
Everything went great ‘till we were aboutfifty yeards from the gate into the waterlot. Theheifers went right on in, but El Toro put on thewhoas. He watched the heifers and wewatched him. Sonny was off to the right whileLance and I were behind and probably twenty
yards apart. All at once, that bull whirled around and
quick as a scalded cat, headed for Lance on arun. Lance spun Red around as I hollered, “GETOTTA THERE! He’s serious and he’ll hurt youbad!”
Lance japed old Red with his spurs, butBrahmer was gaining’ ground and snuffing’ oldRed’s tail. All I could think of was, “I gotta gethim away from my brother.” It wasn’t that I wasbrave, but fear makes me do stupid things.
Jake and I were already movin’ at an angletowards Lance, Re and the bull. I had my coiledrope so I could hit him in the face or whateverit took to turn him. It didn’t take much! All of asudden, he turned and came right at me, and Iwas broadsided. I remember thinking’, “This isit. Here’s where I buy it.”
That bull freight-trained Jake under thebelly on the right side, and lighten both of usoff the ground. How that horse styed up, I’llnever know, but the bull went through. Jake hitthe ground on all fours and we hauled buttoutta there!
We let him go and three days later hetrailed in with some heifers to the waterlot. Igot his attention on the far side, and while he astrying to get throughout that fens to do mebodily harm, Lance aced in and started closingthe gate. That brahma whirled, took one look atLance and charged. Just as he got the gateclosed and locked, the bull hit it. Luckily, itheld. After some quick maneuvering’, we sep-arated him into a small corral, loaded him in atrailer and to the bull pasture he went.
As we opened the trailer gate and ran toget in the pickup, my brother laughed andhollered, “Ain’t this cowboyin’ fun? I’m having’a blast!” I love him, but sometimes I worryabout him!!
