He said this was a great opportunity for the district as a whole to move forward, creating new business oppor- tunities and employment.

YOUR VIEWS

NewConnectionCongratulations are due to the HorowhenuaDistrict Council Management on introducing anew style Community Connection publicationwith, in particular, a senior staff members’profile. Hopefully the feature continues on aregular basis with district ratepayers andresidents being able to put a face to a name thatperiodically appears on Council reports andnews items.

With regular senior staff profiles beingincluded in future publications, ratepayers andresidents will be kept informed of the type ofofficer employed in a management position, their backgrounds and certain personal details.

In all probability the calibre of the seniorofficers and their diverse backgrounds willresult in ratepayer/resident awareness of theskills and experience they bring to the job ofsupporting the elected council members and topmanagement as well as promoting the Horo-whenua District as a well managed LocalAuthority.

The Horowhenua Chronicle management areto be commended in supporting the new HDCCommunity Connection with distributionthroughout the district being a major role of theChronicle.

In particular, the Chronicle’s chief reporter(Peter Franklin) has been a major influence inthe reshaping of the updated HDC publicationthrough his regular interaction with councilmanagement and his well-known ‘‘peopleskills’’.

All-in-all a win win result for all districtcitizens and Chronicle readers.

Dumped rubbishI took several overseas visitors to walk the trackaround the lake and attached shows the dumpedcarpet and bottles etc at the car park to theentrance.

A DOC ranger at the site was organising atruck to clean up. Bad enough the carpet hadbeen dumped but the sheer idleness of thepersons involved not being bothered to take thebottles to a recycling depot where no chargeapplies got up my nose. The ranger had checkedthe items site but nothing incriminating found.

MONEY MATTERS

Be well informed on Genesis offerwith BERNARD LONG

Shortly Genesis shares will be offeredfor sale; the latest of the state ownedasset sales. Don’t rely on the press adsto make your decision. Take advice onwhether the price reflects the risks, thelikely rewards are sufficient and if thisshare is suitable for you.

This time the price will be estab-lished prior to the general offer. Itseems unbelievable you would beasked to buy without knowing the pricebut that is what happened in previoussales.

Genesis is the smallest of the threepower companies listed by the Govern-ment but the largest retailer in New

Zealand with anestimated marketshare of 27 percent in electricityand 45 per cent ingas.

Fuel flexibilityand storage ingeneration meansthat earnings are

likely to be more stable compared toother listed power companies. Basedon 2015 forecasts the dividend yield isanticipated to be in the range of 8 to 10per cent. Also Genesis produces moreelectricity than its customers requireand therefore can provide hedgingcontracts to its competitors.

The biggest risks to Genesis are thepotential Labour/Greens pricing policy, the possible closure of the Tiwaismelter and weak electricity demandand oversupply. We expect the shareprice will reflect these factors but evenso it is important to take advice beforecommitting. Talk to me to find outmore about this share and whether it issuitable for you.■ Bernard Long is an AuthorisedFinancial Adviser with Goldridge Ltd.The views and opinions expressed inthis article are intended to be of ageneral nature and do not constitute apersonalised advice for an individualclient. LOOKING BACK: Carol and Colin Markwell pore through photos of Wharepuni andfamily over the century. Many of the earlier photos were taken by a relation whowas a professional photographer at a time when camera’s were rare andexpensive.

STILL STANDING: Looking much as it does today, Wharepuni — the meeting house of thePerrins and their extended families.

FEELING AT HOME: Carol andColin Markwell in front of thebedroom that Carol’s father Donslept in as a child.

It’s no secret the iconic Kiwibach is disappearing, FoxtonBeach can still boast a few, manydwarfed by luxury multi levelhomes.

On a section in Hartley Streettime has stood still.

The face of the Perrin familybach may have had a littlecosmetic help over the pastcentury, but the bones are stillthe same. Rust nibbles at the roofand borer at the wooden beams of‘‘Wharepuni’’ but it is still the‘‘meeting house’’ and more toextended Perrin family memberswhose laughter and love havefilled the rooms for 100 years.

‘‘We don’t know how muchlonger the bach will last,’’ CarolMarkwell, nee Perrin, said. ‘‘It isappropriate the family celebratethe history of this bach as itturned 100.’’

John Edmund Perrin, born inPalmerston North in 1844,operated the first building firmin Palmerston North, Meyrick,Perrin and Oakley.

He was responsible for manybuilding projects in Foxton. Heand wife Matilda built a house atFoxton Beach in which they, andtheir nine children, stayed mostholidays.

The Jamieson family, alsofrom Palmerston North, built asmall house just down the road.In the late 1800s Foxton Beachwas a smaller settlement than itis today, it was inevitable thePerrin and Jamieson pathswould cross.

About 1909 it did, a love affair

between John Halford Perrinand Eliza Jamieson resulted intheir 1911 marriage.

In 1914 they built their ownbeach house sandwichedbetween the two family ones. That bach is the only family onestill standing. ‘‘John and Elizawere my grandparents,’’ Carolsaid.

‘‘The bach was passed ontomy parents and then to my sisterand I. We have wonderfulmemories of staying here assmall children.’’

The front porch wasremodelled into an extra room afew years after being built, nodoubt to accommodate thegrowing family.

‘‘It is otherwise prettyoriginal, with one majorimprovement,’’ husband Colinsaid.

‘‘There is an inside flushtoilet.’’

The little shed whichprotected the longdrop is nowColin’s garden shed, theMarkwell’s modern home sits

behind the bach sharing thesubstantial section. ‘‘Ourchildren and grandchildren lovecoming here and while we hopeit’s here for many moregenerations the truth is themaintenance is starting to getpretty substantial,’’ Colin said.

Carol said they consideredthemselves almost ‘‘caretakers’’of the property.

‘‘We have kept it up as well aswe have been able for the nextgeneration but, realistically, itmay eventually succumb to oldage.’’

For now Wharepunicontinues to invite familymembers to create their ownmemories within it’s walls.

Burglars activewith GRAEME JARVIS,Community Constable

The over night andevening activities ofburglars is of greatconcern to Levin police, following on from theburglar disturbed in KentSt last week.

On Monday evening, ahouseholder in CambridgeSt responded to noisesoutside and saw anoffender looking in hiswindow. The offenderimmediately ran off andwas not located by policebut this was likely to beanother break-in averted.

The area of greatestconcern is centred onCambridge and Queen Stsand once again allresidents in the generalarea are reminded to takeall the necessary safetyprecautions, by locking alldoors and windows, evenwhen they are at home.

It is clear there is alsoan offender, or offenders, committing commercialburglaries.

There have been severalcommercial premises inand around the centralbusiness district targeted.

During the weekend acommercial premise at thesouth end was also brokeninto. Cash, and smallportable items, such as laptop computers, are beingstolen.

Thefts and break-ins inour rural areas are also

prevalent, with the theft ofdiesel from a marketgardener reportedovernight on Sunday.

Motor cycles, quads, petrol and diesel fromfarms and horticulturalblocks are being targetedas they are often storedsome distance fromresidences. Police urgeextra precautions at thistime and to ensure vehiclesare locked away and keysare not left in the ignition.

I continue to get scamletters dropped into meand reports from time totime of emails and phonecall scams as well.

I am sure severalreaders will have had callsfrom someone purportingto represent Microsoft, saying there is a problemwith their computer. Ihave had several calls athome.

Simply hang up, as this

is another twist to themany types of scamscirculating.

I had a letter dropped inadvertising thePrizemasters AustralianLotto. This is a veryprofessional publication, but again I am verydubious about theauthenticity of such aletter. Claims of‘‘guaranteed winningchances’’ to share in vastfortunes do not sit easilywith me.

Spend $25 for a ticket atyour peril. The letter thatcame to me is in therubbish and I hope anyoneelse with these letters doesthe same.

Another version of anold theme has also beenhanded to me. Thistypically is from a lawyerin an overseas countrytrying to give away a vastfortune left in a deceasedestate.

The letters always saythe respondent has beenselected because theyshare the same surname, not that they necessarilyare related. If this soundsfamiliar, please do notrespond, it is clearly anattempt at a scam.

I have responded tonumerous of the emailaddresses from thesescams, inviting theauthors to correspond withme direct — funnilyenough I have not had asingle reply!

FOREST CHALLENGE

Feeling the pressureI am Tania and I am training for the 10kmevent at Great Forest Events on April 12.

Each week I will update you with myprogress. Hopefully, I will encourage you tojoin me on this journey and also enter theevent.

I’m half way there and feeling thepressure. During the last week, I have hadlots more energy and feel like I have madesome life-long habits and want to exerciseall the time.

I have also started seriously thinkingabout nutrition, what is going into my bodyand what’s keeping my energy up so I don’tcrash badly after lots of training.

I have found getting the right balance offood is not the easiest when you’re doingmore exercise than normal.

I am constantly snacking on fruit andmy favourite nut mix. Sunshine Mix, withextra raw almonds, seems to be my bestfriend lately.

I am including lots of fish, chicken andfresh vegetables in my meals. I have gonecold turkey and cut out nearly all processedfoods, concentrating hard on the theory ifit’s a plant eat it, if it’s made in a plantdon’t. The apples on sale are delicious.

I have some fantastic news . . . I havefinally got a bike. I am a proud owner of agood set of wheels and I’m so excited to getmy bum on the seat and hit the tracks.

Getting back on a bike has taken meback to my childhood — it is quite a playfulexperience. My husband has been verysupportive with my training when, duringthe last few weeks, I have left him to fendfor himself.

As he also enjoys biking, so we’vedecided to do this together and it has been ablast as we have completed a couple of10km rides through the forest. The scenerythere is addictive.

Biking is a great way to get active, it’ssomething for the whole family and theHorowhenua region has off-road trackseverywhere for those worried aboutcycling on the busy roads.

While the walking on the beach hasbeen great, I feel like I need to push myselfa bit harder, so this week I’ve gone up Trigevery second day. It’s a great hike andgetting up to the top is helping with thestrength in my legs and back whileworking wonders with my breathing. I amnoticing this when I swim.

It’s so busy up Trig. There are all sortsup there, the fire brigade are regulars (notputting out fires) but training, kidsmountain biking, elderly people, lots oflittle dogs and everyone going up at alltimes of the day — it’s a neat atmosphere!

Next week, I aim to get out on my bikemore and continue my healthy eating.

Come to the Levin Aquatic Centre tochat about the Great Forest Event. Fortraining advice, check out the trainingschedules at www.greatforest.org.nz.This week’s training:5km walk/run x 4.300m swim x 4.Trig (uphill 1hr) x 4.10km bike x 2.Aquablast class x 1.Aquajogging 1hr x 1.Quote of the week: Take care of your body itis the only place you have to live in.

Regions have little to celebratewith ROBMcCANNOtaki Labour Candidate

The socalled ‘rock stareconomy’ is not playing in aregional town near you. In factthey’ve cancelled anyperformances in Levin,Shannon or Foxton andinstead added dates toAuckland and Christchurch.

If you’re wonderingwhether this could be true, just ask yourself the simplequestion. Am I better off than Iwas three or maybe six yearsago? If you’re earning 150k ayear or more, your answerwill be yes. But if you’re therest of New Zealand, theanswer is no.

Thosetax cutsNationalintro-duced in2008 werefor thewealthyand theycost NewZealandsome-where inthe

vicinity of $1 billion eachyear. That’s one billion that isnot going into schools, hospitals or law enforcement.

So where does the moneygo? There are two schools ofthought. John Key says its

being used to create jobs, butwith unemployment so highhis arguments don’t stack up.

More likely, the wealthyfew spend it on overseasholidays and purchasing stateassets that used belong to all ofus. If you’ve read an Aucklandor Christchurch paperrecently, you’ll also know thatluxury car sales have neverbeen better which also doesn’tsound like job creation.

So yes, there’s a socalledrock star economy, but we’reno longer invited to theconcert Mr Key’s talkingabout — it’s by invite only andthe regions are missing out.

It was hammered home tome just last week how

selective this new economy iswhen I met a grandmother inLevin. One of her sons workson a dairy farm, part of theindustry leading the ‘upturn’.She was so proud of him, hiswife and the grandchildren. But every week she has to topup that young family’s incomebecause they can’t survive onthe pittance they’re paid.

But don’t feel bad. JohnKey has said ‘‘I don’t think weshould fret or worry about thefact that we’re a low wageeconomy’’.

I disagree and I want all ofNew Zealand to have a frontrow seat and share in aneconomy that rewardseveryone.

IronMaori InspiresWhanau to TriEvery year in December there is a half-Ironmancompetition called ‘Iron Maori’. Watching whanaumembers compete in 2012 inspired a whole lot ofus to give it a go last year. After months of training(and fundraising!) we eventually had 10 tamarikiswimming and running in ‘Iron Tamariki’. The nextday 36 of our whanau competed in Iron Maori. For some of us it was our very first triathlon ever.

Swimming 2km, cycling 90km and walking 21.1 kmis no small feat. It helps that we train together asa whanau. The passion and determination of ourtamariki and kaumatua inspire us all to keep goingwhen trainings get tough! Since then more of ourwhanau have joined us, and while we still intend tocompete at Iron Maori every year, we also supportour members to participate in a range of other

events and activities that promote being a ‘healthywhānau’. We have called our ropu ‘Tri Taitoko’. Youmight spot us in our uniforms down at the pools, cycling or beating the streets. Our whakataukiexplains it all: “E kore au e ngawhere, he maire tuuwaoma ate toki e tua: Success through unity”. If you’reinterested in joining or want more informationemail [email protected] tatou!

Minister’s Visit –Chris FinlaysonThe grey sombre cloudsmatched the tone of sadnessand loss delivered in the korero ofMuaupokowhanauto the Office of Treaty Settlements Minister, ChrisFinlayson, on Friday, February 28th.

The hui allowed Muaupoko whanau to sharewith Minister Finlayson, in their own words, theimmense importance of a number of sites ofsignificance within the rohe to Muaupoko.

Minister Finlayson was joined by Otaki MP NathanGuy, Office of Treaty Settlements (OTS) kaumatuaJohn Clark, OTS officials and more than 40Muaupoko whanau at Horomaunga te mai ridgeoverlooking Lake Horowhenua.

The hui allowed Muaupoko whanau to recountthe devastation suffered by their ancestors, andsubsequent generations, over the loss to the iwi ofimmensely important locations, many destroyed asa result of breaches to the Treaty ofWaitangi.

ActingMuaupoko CEO BrentonTukapua said it wassignificant to hold the event on Horomaunga temairidgeoverlooking LakeHorowhenua, a site of immensehistorical importance to the people of Muaupoko.

It was important to come here to Horomaungate mai ridge, long ago destroyed and these landstaken from us. Our marae, which once nurturedand protected our ancestors, is now a privatelyowned farm. The chance to host the Minister andhis officials on this crucial kaupapa to hear ourlaments and loss was a very important process.

Brenton said he was grateful to landowner, PeterEverton, for allowing Muaupoko to host the hui onhis land and for also supporting the iwi with hisattendance.

Muaupoko Chairperson LouanaWilliams saidthat the Minister and his delegation were clearlyaffected by the powerful messages and memoriesdelivered by Muaupoko whanau that includedJonathan Proctor, RobWarrington, MarokopaWiremu Matakatea and Trevor Hill.

We were privileged to have our kaumatua and kuiato support this important kaupapa and to have anumber of our Muaupoko whanau here with us tosupport our speakers.

The korero was very sad and detailed. It left theMinister and his officials with no doubt as to thedevastation and loss that has been levelled againstour people.

From this site with its stunning views which seemto take on the entire region, we could see the townbuilt upon our lands, the waterways polluted bythe new populations.

Louana praised the Muaupoko historians forholding the knowledge of the iwi and its ancestorsto help ensure their laments could be heard today. She also thanked Horowhenua District CouncilDeputy Mayor Gary Good for attending andsupporting Muaupoko at the significant event.

This is one of a number of essential processes toallow progress and to help bring some closure tothe generations of hurt, loss and exclusion that ourpeople have endured.

We are strong and committed in our journey toensure our people can progress our grievanceand quest for justice, to allow us to then focus ourconsiderable energies on the future and assisting ourpeople, marae and hapu to achieve their potential.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD FIRST HOME?Firstly, a good first home is one that you can afford. To find out how much youcan afford, first visit your bank or mortgage adviser. They will let you know howmuch you can borrow, based upon your income and expenses. Often they canapprove your mortgage before you start looking for your first home.

BUY ON NEED RATHER THAN WANTMake a list that contains the features and aspects that you feel are necessary.Remember your first home will be more affordable if you do not want everyluxury.

MARKET CONDITIONSThe property market is currently extremely buoyant in the Horowhenua region.Record numbers of homes are being sold, and we are having lots of disappointedpurchasers missing out because they have been too slow putting offers in.

Roger Bloxham — chimney sweepMary Poppins loved hers, thepeople of Horowhenua lovetheirs. Chimney sweep that is.

Roger Bloxham, professionalchimney sweep, is passionateabout people first and chimneyssecond.

"People have been welcom-ing me into their homes for over20 years," Roger said. "It’s ahuge privilege. Sometimes wehave a cuppa, a bit of a chatafter the chimney work is done.I’ve seen babies born, familiesgrow up, spouses pass on,people shift house."

It’s not just families thatevolve, Roger has seen justabout every type of chimneyimaginable and he’s pleased tosee they have improvedimmeasurably through theyears.

"Home fires are in generalmuch safer now, more efficient. The old open fire is a farce, itdoesn’t heat a house, itintroduces cold air into it."

As a consultant, Roger isfamiliar with telltale signs ofproblems with fireboxes andchimneys, problems whichcould ultimately cause a housefire.

"People would be amazed athow often I see evidence ofchimney fires," Roger said.

"I’d rather be called before itgets to that stage. There aresigns of weakness in the struc-ture I can detect before it gets toa dangerous state.".

"I’ve kept my price for inspec-tion and clean at $60. I appreci-ate the loyalty of my Horo-whenua customers, I want

people to be able to afford to besafe."

He’s well aware some com-panies are charging up to $85and it concerns him.

"They’re not specialists, they’re people who take on thejob seasonal ly. I ’ve seenfireboxes burnt out becausecowboys have put the baffles inback to front, charged plenty fordoing it, and the firebox ends upneeding replaced.

"People might feel embar-rassed asking me to inspecttheir fire after they’ve hadsomeone else do it, but theyneedn’t be. I’m just happy to beable to ensure they’re safe intheir own home."

Roger is avai lable forconsultations and sweeping byappointment.

Crossover visiongoes a step furtherSubaru is continuing to showcase futuretechnologies and design themes with itsViziv series of concept cars.

The Viziv 2 is a future-generationcrossover concept has been unveiled at therecent Geneva Motor Show, following onfrom previous Viziv designs that wereshown at last year’s Frankfurt and Tokyomotor shows.

Subaru says Viziv is a word inspired bythe phrase ‘‘Vision for Innovation’’ toexpress the future vision of innovation andthe future direction of the brand.

The design target for Viziv 2 is theintegration of apparently-opposing elementssuch as environmental friendliness andwith driving performance on all roadsurface conditions.

The original Viziv featured a two-doordesign while Viziv 2 employs a four-doorconfiguration with packaging thataccommodates four adults in comfort.

The key dimensions of the conceptinclude an overall length of 4435mm, widthof 1920mm and height of 1530mm — makingit 15mm shorter than the current Subaru XVcrossover but 140mm wider and 85mmlower.

The robust body design is highlighted bypolished surfaces with prominent fendersflare like those on the WRX, a hexagonalgrille and large circular lights whichemphasise the image of an active crossover.

The core hexagonal shape of the body isrepeated again in the rear with the rearcombination lamps enhancing theimpression of width and the strong fendersconveying a sense of stability in theirstance.

A rugged body framework has beenincorporated as part of the design, creatingan interior which inspires a dynamic, enjoyable driving experience.

Powering the Viziv 2 is a plug-in hybridsystem that consists of a 1.6-litre directinjection turbo Boxer engine, combinedwith high-torque-compatible Lineartronic(CVT) transmission with one front motorand two rear motors.

The components for the hybrid systemsuch as the high voltage lithium-ion batterypack are installed while maintainingSubaru’s unique Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel drive) layout which achieves a lowcentre of gravity and superior weightdistribution.

Independent rear-motor-drivensymmetrical AWD is leading the way to afuture generation of Subaru AWDtechnology as Subaru is constantly refiningits unique AWD systems.

The Independent rear-motor-drivensymmetrical AWD system provides fine-tuned control of the four wheels to match thedriving environment and road surfaceconditions.
