BREAK THE SILENCE FOR BETTER SCOUTING

AIM

The aim of this model is to bring together all young scouts living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda to

enjoy scouting meaningfully to their full potential.

MISSION

A brighter future for HIV positive scouts free from fear, to live healthy and productive lives in

Uganda with meaningful involvement.

OBJECTIVES

• To help scouts live healthy and productive lives to enjoy scouting better.

• To reduce stigma and Discrimination among scouts and create an enabling environment

for them.

• To involve HIV activities in the different camps and create awareness for HI positive

scouts to share personal testimonies.

WHY THIS MODEL

The scouts from time to time have been having HIV programs in the different activities which ithas handled. The may focus of this was;

1. Creating awareness on HIV prevention

2. Sensitizing people on stigma and Discrimination among others

With this the HIV positive scouts have not been fully involved and showing the impact of all

these. With the main target on not acquiring HIV makes those already living with the virus out

and the question remain ‘how will they be involved .’

There is also a growing number of young people born with OR infected during the course of

there growth and most of the scouts membership is seen to be in school. In relation to this there

is also a growing number out of school and yet they are scouts. That is why there is need for

meaningful involvement of scouts that are both in and out of school.

Scouting being a movement and fun with the purpose of helping young people to develop

physically, intellectually, socially, and spiritually.it has the potential of gathering young positive

scouts into different groups inform scout clubs.

• This can be done by;

1. Gathering data for all HIV positive scouts to come up with numbers.

2. Conducting a survey to know how many scouts are in each District.

• Training scout leaders to become counselors in their respective districts.

• Training young scouts to become public speaker so as to effectively share testimonies.

HOW WILL THIS CONTRIBUTE TO SCOUTING AND ASSOCIATION

1. The Uganda scouts association membership will increase due to its holistic intervention

being a new model and perhaps those who will have left the association will come back.

2. This will also contribute to the scout promise of ‘helping other people at all time.’ This

will be helping HIV positive scouts who will help others in their communities

3. Break the silence for better scouting will directly contribute to the scout law that is ‘A

scout is cheerful and courageous’  and this will be through sharing of personal life

testimonies hence making life worth living.
