In The Classroom Kindergarten Field Trip

The kindergarten class visited the Lincoln Children's Zoo on Tuesday, May 15th. We saw a variety of animals including beetles, camels, goats, peacocks, monkeys, tortoises, parrots, leopards, and bald eagles. One of the highlights of the trip included watching the penguins being fed. We ate lunch at the zoo as well. Marlene packed us delicious sack lunches with milk and juice. It was a hot, fun-filled adventure for the class! We really enjoyed our trip and learned a lot about new animals!

Science Fair

On May 10, 2013 Shickley Public School’s 3rd through 12th grade students participated in their annual Science Fair. The 7th through 12th grade students were given a topic to base their experiments on: the human body, astronomy, properties and structure of matter, and renewable energy sources. The students received prizes for first, second, and third place groups in the Junior and Senior High Divisions. First place went to Madison Yantzie and Delaney Davis; second place was a tie and went to Jennifer Mick and Tyler Peppie and also Catherine Mick, Tristen Mosier, and Ben Elznic; and third place went to Christy Swartzendruber and Tyler Reece in the High School Division. In the Junior High Division first place went to Carley Elznic and Nicole Swartzendruber, second place went to Lexi Kadel and Megan Grote, and third place went to Courtney Kamler and Dakota McBride.

1st and 2nd Grade Field Trip

The 1st and 2nd graders went on a field trip to the Hastings Museum (3 pictures below). They enjoyed a 3-D show about the migration of the monarch butterfly. They learned about North American mammals through a guided tour of the museum. Eating at McDonald’s was the highlight at lunchtime as they all had to order and pay for the meal by themselves. The students listened to a program about sea monsters of Nebraska. Finally, they visited the planetarium and learned about the stars, moon, sun, and the Earth. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day!

In The Classroom 6th Grade News

The 6th Grade class has been doing a variety of things to close out the year.

Annually, the students perform/compete in the Science Fair and Fun Day Track Meet hosted by the school. Once again this turned out to be a smashing success. The sun was shining on our students as they showed their abilities both on the playing field, but more importantly, Academia. The students definitely had an enjoyable experience!

In the classroom, the students have been going outside the box and looking at different aspects of content areas that they will be encountering next year. Some of these topics include, but are not limited to:

Math:

- Negative Rational Numbers

- Area of Circles

- Angle Relationships

Reading:

- Bias within Literature

- History fiction stories - specifically the

book Rolling Thunder, Hear My Cry

Social Studies:

- The "Isolated Continent" of Australia

and the surrounding islands

The kids have really been a great pleasure to work with this year, and I am looking forward to getting to work with them in 7th Grade Math next year to work toward continuing the progress that we have made in this past year.

7th Grade Math

Track meets, meetings, field trips! These three things about sum up the past few weeks of 7th grade math, but we are doing what we can when we get the time!

The kids have done a good job in their first year of managing a busy schedule with moving into the Junior High ranks. We definitely had our bumps on the road, but that is to be expected! I was quite happy with how we responded to adversity throughout the year.

We currently are working on some quick projects covering the Surface Area of Cylinders and Rectangular Prisms. The kids will get to teach me how to do it! It should be an interesting change-up to say the least!

May 1st, Mr. Schroeder took nine students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to Hebron for a Math Contest (pictured above). As an overall team, we were able to bring home 3rd place! The 7th graders performed especially well with Megan Grote, Kellen Reinsch, and Nicole Swartzendruber bringing home 1st, 3rd, and 5th places respectively in the Individual Test portion. The group also brought home 2nd place in the Quiz Bowl Round and 1st place in the 7th Grade Team Round. They Won the 7th Grade overall championship as well! Very good job by these students as they improved on their marks from a year ago!

In The Classroom News from the Business Room

Computer Applications II students finished their final projects in May. Throughout the year they learned the features of Microsoft Office 2010. In The Dream Team simulation, they took on the role of a Microsoft Office Sports Marketing Specialist and team owner to start their own professional sports franchise team. After creating their team name and logo, their mission was to build the team’s identity, fill a team roster, track players’ salaries and ticket sales, and publicize their team. From letters to spreadsheets, presentations, databases, and publications, their office skills were challenged as they got their team ready for the start of the upcoming season. They presented their team to the class in a final presentation. Below are their team logos:

Accounting students concluded Cycle II which is a complete accounting cycle for a merchandising business organized as a partnership. Then, they moved on to finishing a Fitness Junction accounting simulation. This hands-on simulation takes the students through a monthly fiscal period in which they journalize daily transactions, prepare two payrolls, maintain a checkbook, complete a

work sheet, prepare financial statements, record adjusting and closing entries, and prepare a post-closing trial balance. At the conclusion of their packet they took an audit test to check the accuracy of their work.

The Business Communication student learned about communicating in the workplace and the importance of good communication skills. For his final project, he prepared a Job Process Portfolio. He researched the following: resumes, cover letters, job interview questions, thank you letters, and job interview tips. After his research, he completed a job application, created a resume, and composed a cover letter and thank you letter.

Activities FBLA & FFA

Roadside Cleanup On Tuesday, May 7, 2012, 27 members of the Shickley FFA and FBLA combined in the annual roadside cleanup. This project makes up a part of our organization’s community service programs. The FFA has been involved with this activity for a number of years, and this year they completed 6 miles of roadside cleanup, with both sides totaling 12 miles, east of Shickley on Highway 74. This year a large focus was put on safety by cooperating with the Nebraska State Department of Roads to acquire orange vests and road signs. Along with the vests, latex gloves were also used this year to help promote safety.

Senior Breakfast The FBLA hosted the 2013 Senior Breakfast on May 9th in the Art Room. The seniors, faculty, and staff enjoyed breakfast casseroles, fresh fruit, coffee cake, and orange juice provided by FBLA members (pictured below). The table decorations were colorful reusable cups filled with candy and were gifts to the seniors from the FBLA. The senior FBLA members are Hannah Coy, Alex Kluna, and Makaleigh Yantzie. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the FBLA Chapter the last four years!

Activities FFA Looking Forward

FFA Holds All-Members Meeting

The Shickley FFA held an all members meeting on Monday, May 16, 2013 to review summer activities. The meeting first came to order after President Nathan Hendrickson welcomed the new members. The members split into their activities committee groups, led by chapter officers, and they worked on developing a plan of what our chapter wants to accomplish within the next year. They also played three icebreaker games to get to know something about the FFA, working together, and getting to know our fellow FFA members. We then talked about the upcoming Farm Safety Day Camp, our fire hydrant painting project, county fair projects, county fair and state fair participants, and Shickley's upcoming Q125. County fair days run from Friday, July 12 to Thursday, July 18th. We also covered our annual FFA birthday calendar. Then, the meeting was adjourned.

Nibbles from the Lunch Room

We have all made it through the first year of the new lunch room regulations. It was really just a trial year. Now we will be prepared for next year and the years to come. The students have been very cooperative and understanding with the process.

Next year, the students will be asked to eat even more veggies. So how can you help us help your kids? This summer introduce them to different vegetables. Let them choose something from the grocery store they would like to try. Try vegetables hot and cold. Some you may like better one way than the other. See how many different vegetables you can eat over the summer. You may even want to try raising your own vegetables in a garden. Fresh is always best.

We have been concerned with the number of students choosing not to drink milk with their meals. We are required to serve 1% or fat free milk. So perhaps you could challenge yourselves at home and change your milk choice to what the school offers. No matter what the fat content is in the milk, it is still a good source of calcium for your child for healthy teeth and bones. See if your kids can drink more milk than fruit juice and sodas.

And last but not least, begin adding more whole grains to your meals. Some you may want to try are whole grain (51% or more) breads, crackers, corn chips, and pastas. We use whole grain spaghetti now, and they eat it well.

Get your kids involved in cooking your meals at home. It can be a fun learning experience for you all.

Have a great healthy and active summer.
