Upon joining the cross-country and track programs, I remember seniors raving about Bill Gilbert’s motivational stories. During the past four years he has definitely lived up to all the praise. Whether he was convincing me of my potential, helping me through injuries, or simply bringing the much-needed water to a hard workout, Bill hasbeen at every practice and meet, always with a kind word to share. Bill could always tell when I was ready to do my best and he convincedme that nothing is impossible. Thank you, Bill.

When I was a kid, I had difficulties learning and interacting with people. Mr. Pogreba’s class made me feel comfortable sharing my thoughts and exponentially increased my passion for learning. From satire towilderness, every topic he taught made me a more knowledgeable person and opened my mind to new ideas. Mr. Pogreba stands out forhis enthusiasm for education, aversion to worksheets, amusing wit, and extensive wisdom. His commitment to his students, especially during countless hours outside of school, makes Mr. Pogreba a truly exemplary educator. I owe my writing skills, successful test scores, and much, much more to Mr. Pogreba. Thank you for everything.

Kylie Brost is everything you could ever ask for in an elementary school teacher. Her passion and dedication to learning are visible toeveryone around her. As my 2nd and 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Brostpushed my learning through imagination. Whether it was taking a trip around the world in a desk-made airplane, or turning the entireclassroom into a jungle, Mrs. Brost always had some fun plan to teachus in such a way that we didn’t even realize how much we had learned. The joy she has for teaching is truly inspiring.

Mr. Chart has had a huge influence on me. When I arrived in his pre-calculus class as a junior, I couldn’t care less if the derivative of an equation equaled its slope, or that an integral was the area under the curve. That all changed when I was exposed to Mr. Chart’s upbeatattitude and passion for teaching that made me excited to learn mathand kept me going when I had to crank out those labor-intensive problems that I would have cringed at before.

I found myself sitting in a room full of strangers when we moved to Helena, Montana my 3rd grade year. Sidney Burgess’ passion for teaching and ability to connect with her students was apparent from day one. No matter what we were doing in that class, there was constant praise and encouragement. Ms. Burgess taught me to be patient and to work hard to reach my goals. Throughout my journey in public schools, I have utilized these skills in order to be successful. I couldn’t have asked for a better role model to start the long journey to graduation. Thank you so much, Ms. Burgess.

I chose Jonna Schwartz as my distinguished educator because she is my pal. We have shared a connection; our stupendous writing skills and our deep love of Harry Potter have kept us close throughout myfour years of high school. She has been my Albus Dumbledore, guidingme through life, whether I needed help with my English or with my personal issues. She has taught me self-discipline, academic skills that are proving extremely beneficial and will continue to do so, andhow to be passionate about whatever it is that I love doing. Schwartzy is truly the best teacher anyone could ever ask for... if only we could beat Hogwarts.

When I think of the word education, I think of the word motivation. The two words go hand in hand, because when you’re motivated to be educated you have a greater chance of being successful from an educational standpoint. My motivator was my amazing 5th gradeteacher Mrs. Goyins; she inspired me to be my best and made my learning environment a great place to be. I can’t thank her enough for the year of excellent teaching she graced me with. Thank you, Mrs. Goyins.

Mr. Peterson has been one of my favorite teachers because he caresabout all of his students. He teaches math in a fun way, telling jokes and stories to lighten up the class. He is always in a good mood, despiteour having an early morning class. He cares that all of his students succeed, and even with the fast pace of the class, he always takes extra time to make sure everyone is on track. He has taught me to workhard and to never take anything too seriously.

My first years of high school were not the greatest. My freshman year I met the most amazing person I could have in my life. Her name is Mrs. Edwards. She taught me that I could always be better than Ithought, and how to always strive for my best. When I was a freshman,my goal was to drop out as soon as I turned 16. My attitude was poor.Without her and my loving family I would have dropped out of highschool. When she came into my life, she changed me, because no matter how rude and disrespectful I was, she always continued to showunconditional love. After I met her I was inspired to better myself. She nurtured me with life lessons and taught me that no matter what, she would always be there for me. The man I am today would be nonexistent without her—the man who is going to graduate, succeed, and go very far in life. Forever I am in her debt; I owe her my everything, my all and my world.

I feel that he’s helped steer me in the correct direction as well as help me form my own opinions. WithoutGreg I know I wouldn’t have finished high school. Second grade was the pinnacle of my adolescent state of confusion: thetransition between following my innocently impulsive heart, to learningthe morals of society. Mrs. Chamberlain was the only adult during thistime who understood my desire to be free, rather than controlled. One ofthe rules at Montana City School was “no hats in school.” At that point inmy life, my blue zigzag, striped beanie was the only thing keeping megrounded. Multiple times, the administration asked me to take off myhat while I, not understanding their rules, refused. Later that week,Mrs. Chamberlain proposed to me that I write a letter to the administra-tion, like this: Dear Principal, please let me wear my hat in school. I love itvery much. I promise it won’t hurt anyone. From, Jo. This short letter was myfirst step to becoming the independent person that I am today. Mrs.Chamberlain has been one of the most memorable influences in my life, and I will forever stay true to the lesson that she taught me that day: any obstacle can be passed if you are willing to stay true to your heart.

Filled with shouts of “John C. Calhoun!” and the Limbo, each day in Mr. Partridge’s class has been an adventure. He makes history come alive every day through fantastic stories and vast knowledge. In his class I became engrossed in the Civil War, the French Revolution, and the underlying messages endorsing Populism in The Wizard of Oz. I have learned such valuable lessons as, nothing in life is black andwhite (except Dr. Strangelove and Casablanca) and to never try to stop a cannonball with my foot.

I don’t think I would like chemistry as much as I do if it weren’t for Mrs. Thomas. On the first day of class, both for Chem 1 and Chem 2,her upbeat attitude and enthusiasm had me excited for a year filledwith labs and projects. Her genuine love for chemistry is evident in thelectures she gives, and only makes hard concepts easier to understand. Her personality gives life to the subject, which is why her class is theone I look forward to the most. What sets Mrs. Thomas apart fromother teachers is her authentic concern for each individual student; not only does she want us to succeed in her class, but in all other aspects of our lives too. It is not uncommon for her to stop by my desk,or anyone else’s, and just ask how everything is going. While my other teachers have played a role in my education during elementary and middle school and I remember them fondly, it is Mrs. Galbavy who has made a profound difference in my education and my personal life. That’s really what being a great teacher is allabout. Mrs. G. was there for me during the most difficult time of my life and she helped me believe I was going to make it through. She wasthere the day my dad passed away and she’s been there ever since. Mrs. G. has been my welding teacher for Welding II and III. She hastaught me how to construct some really neat projects that will last a lifetime and given me treasured memories. She has made me proud of what I can accomplish in welding class. It’s a time I look forward to and it makes for the best part of my day. Mrs. G. is a great role model for me to become a better person. Every person has a pivotal moment where a decision that can invariably change your life must be made. For me, that was in Mrs. Slead’s second grade class. She helped my parents and me make the choice to be held back which set me on the right track for the rest of my educational career. Her ability to see that I needed more time to grow and mature before I moved on was an incredible insight and gift. Rather then sending me on when I wasn’t ready, she took the special care and time to hold me back and foster my intellectual and personal growth.

Mr. Schulz has been more than just a teacher to me; he’s been my helping hand, and he’s strived to help me recover and develop spiritually and academically. When I was having trouble at home, I could count on his kind manner and inspirational words. Mr. Schulzalso got me involved in Ukulele Club, Science Bowl, and ScienceOlympiad, all of which I love, and has supported me in all of my endeavors in the past couple of years. Mr. Schulz, I hope you know the difference you have made.

From my first, tentative days spent in band freshman year, Mr. Zehr has been an inspirational force in my life. It is under his tutelage that I have developed a deep passion for music and its nuances, as he coaxes and cajoles the band to new musical heights with an under-stated, humble teaching style that includes brilliant metaphorical symbolism and well-thought-out, simply effective adages like “Sound is King.” More important, however, is the profound, life-applicable wisdom that he has dispensed to me with the gravitas of a powerful, pondering wizard.

Julie Mitchell was the teacher I had always needed. I have never been pushed to think as far out of the box as Julie encouraged me to.She expected excellence, and the three years I spent in the programworking toward that goal changed the way I learn and think. She fullyengages herself in every project and every student. Julie continuallypushes the boundaries of what education is with her boundless projects.I don’t know where I would be without her continuing support. Thank you for being such an inspiration, Julie!

Mrs. Marianne Schadt has been very influential in my life and academic career. Mrs. Schadt has a passion for what she teaches and that fact is evident in her lessons. When I was a sophomore, she organized a field trip to Missoula so her Honors English II classcould see West Side Story. Mrs. Schadt helped me with essays even after I had left her class. She has not only been a mentor for me, but she has also become a friend.

My mom, Mrs. Smith, has been my computer science teacher for the past four years. She has taught me Oracle, Tech Skills for Life, and Cisco, but more importantly she has shown me the value of learning. Mrs. Smith is not just the teacher in her classroom; she is also the greatest student. She is constantly learning as her curriculumevolves and as technology changes. She, a college graduate with both a Bachelors and a Masters, has shown me that you are never too smart or too old to continue to learn.

I have chosen Lindsay Barnes for my Distinguished Educator for many reasons. Ms. Barnes has been all over the world, so when she talks about a place or topic, it’s like you are there with her. Her enthusiasm never loses its touch. After taking her class, all you want to do is travel! You are left with knowledge, laughs and a love for our crooked world. Thank you, Barnes!

Mr. Loveridge, my band director of four years, has been an indispensi-ble educator in my life. He has exposed my passion for music to me in so many different lights, on many instruments and he has increasedmy musical knowledge and prowess. In doing so, Mr. Loveridge hashelped to construct a confidence in me that I would have been hard-pressed to find by other means. Possibly the greatest lesson I learnedfrom Mr. Loveridge is one outside the classroom; namely, the notionthat responsibility and maturity are intrinsically part of me and ofeveryone. Thank you, Mr. Loveridge.

On top of teaching five classes, leading the school in MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) promotion, and raising a family,Mrs. Norman still gives me every second of her time that I ask for. She has stayed hours after school to help me with papers, scholarships, and even social problems I am facing. Her positivity and passion forwhat she does, inspires me every day to reach higher levels in every aspect of my life. She is a truly influential role model in my life, and I know she will always be there for me, past, present, and future.

John George teaches the college level calculus course at Helena High, among other math classes. He is passionate about upper-levelmath, and it is fun to watch him get excited about integration problemsthat take the better part of an hour to solve. He cares for his studentsand is willing to do what it takes for each of them to succeed. He is patient with the sometimes ridiculous questions we math nerds often come up with and encourages careful, logical thinking in coming to conclusions.

“6 times 8 is 48, I woke up with a stomach ache.” Math was always a challenging subject for me, but Mrs. Martinelli was very creative in teaching us times tables with rhymes. She also sent home enoughtimes tables sheets for me to practice with my mom to put a real dent in my summer. Mrs. Martinelli encouraged me to be more independentand not be ashamed of being deaf. Nine years later, I still rememberwhat you taught me inside and outside of the classroom. Thanks Mrs. Martinelli!

My life has been exceptionally blessed and enriched by having Señor Lyng as my Spanish teacher for four years. He ceaselessly pours his heart and optimistic personality into his teaching. The genuine, amicable joy glowing inside him inspires me daily. I greatly value his personal encouragement, guidance, and faith in me. Our sidesplitting laughs add “extra flavor crystals” to my life. He has motivated me to further study my Spanish passion as a career. I am sincerely grateful to know Señor Lyng as a true friend and teacher. ¡Muchas gracias!
