particularly enjoyable, for while seated there, I was greeted by the presence of a rather large black and yellow bumblebee. It was truly a delight to watch one of God’s most skillful aviators traverse from flower to flower- performing one of nature’s most miraculous feats – spreading pollen which makes vegetables and fruits a benefit for humanity and God’s living creatures. Watching the bumble bee go about what was truly an ordinary event for him – first traversing the flowers on the table and then flying over to several other flowering plants scattered across the deck, I found myself simply delighting in the joy of God’s creation and found myself grateful for the privilege to enjoy the simple, yet truly complex feats of nature. I suppose that if I was severely allergic to bee stings, I may have been quite apprehensive of the big bee’s presence. Yet, I also knew that if I simply watched and didn’t disturb my buzzing friend, the moment would pass as a simple,
joyous occasion and nothing more or less. But just as I was compelled to find great pleasure in simply delighting in the presence of the bumblebee going about his ordinary business, the whole experience compelled me to contemplate just how much God must delight in our actions when they are truly just, pure and righteous, or maybe more simply put – godly. After all, the Bible does tell us that we are all created in his image. Furthering the moment of contemplation, I was led to also consider how often we find great delight in our experiences with young children
Ponderings of Patience Surely God Must Delight in Our Joy An experience that has brought much personal enjoyment to both Carrie and Me as we can now share our home together here in Kansas City, has been the privilege of enjoying an early morning breakfast on our deck amid the coolness of the morning air and among the potted flowers that have grown and bloomed so profusely throughout the spring and summer seasons. This past Saturday morning, I was holding my plate in one hand while eating my breakfast. I have to do this now because the two plants I put in a small pot on our deck table have grown so large that there is only room on the table in which to set a coffee cup and certainly not enough to set down a plate! I find this minor inconvenience to be just fine, how-ever; because I so very much admire the violet blooms and the burgundy leaves that have overtaken the table top. But this past Saturday was

All Singers! Join the Chancel Choir! It’s time once again for the choir to start back up. Rehearsals will begin Wednesday, September 2, at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. The Chancel Choir is a wonderful group of people and our time together is always filled with laughter. If you are looking for a way to serve the church, this might just be for you. All levels of experience are welcome.
Every Sunday at 9.30 am as a part of the Sunday school
classes for the children, we meet and have a music moment.
The children learn songs, including pieces we perform on
special occasions, as well as the Kodaly's solfege hand signals
that helps them build a foundation for reading music. But
most importantly we like to have fun! Come join us!

We take Scripture seriously, of course, but God also gave us the ability to laugh — and it’s healthy to do so! Q: Who was the fastest runner in the Bible? A: Adam. He was first in the human race. Q: Where is baseball played in the Bible? A: Genesis 1:1 reads “In the big inning.” Then Eve stole first, and Adam stole second. Cain struck out Abel, and soon everything was rained out
and dear friends. When children and friends laugh and smile, we smile and laugh too for with them we experience such simple, yet profound joy with them!
And considering God’s word, we are reminded that God “takes pleasure in those who honor him, in those who trust in his constant Love” (Psalm 147:11).
So as the summer months come to a close, I hope you’ll find yourself simply if even just momentarily, filled with deep and profound delight; whether it be from sharing a moment with God’s creatures or laughing joyfully with loved ones. For let us remember that God must delight in our joy too!
Sunday worship has been a genuine joy for Carrie and me and I hope each of you have also experienced uplifting joyfulness as we have shared in worship to God together!
See you this next Sunday!

A message from our Family Life Director – Jim Frentrop
For the past several newsletters I shared some memories and Bible stories from
Vacation School. Our first story was the familiar story of David and Goliath. Our
second was the less-familiar story of a judge named Deborah.
Our third Bible story of VBS was from the book of … oh wait, I’m not saying just yet. I
will say it’s from the Old Testament. So, your challenge is to look at the picture
below, and figure out what Bible story it is from. Here are a few rules for this little
contest: If you were a teacher or youth
helper at VBS, you cannot answer. That would be like cheating.
However you are welcome to ask someone who was at VBS…but they
are not allowed to tell you the story itself, they can only tell you what
book of the Bible it is from. I will say the kids loved this story, and we
loved telling this story, and we hope you will love it too.
The person who calls me, emails me, or approaches me first with the
answer will win…uh, I haven’t decided a prize yet, but you will at least
have bragging rights.
Moving on to other things now…
Yesterday was our annual Youth Group kick-off. We call this event “Sloppy Sunday”, where the kids get to squirt
each other with shaving cream, bob for gummy worms in a bowl full of chocolate pudding, competed in an
obstacle course where they got squirted with toothpaste tubes, wrapped in dental floss, and covered with
chocolate marshmallows. And we ended this hilarious event with a garden hose. And did I mention our garden
hose produces only COLD water? Yeah, I know it was cold water because I also had to get hosed after being
covered with shaving cream, chocolate, and other colorful and scented items that were just plain slippery, messy,
and just a lot of fun! What a great time, and a great group of kids, parents, and youth helpers! (Oh and the grilled
burgers and hot dogs, and of course the cookies, were awesome too.)
While “Sloppy Sunday” is a fairly new tradition, Barry Christian Church has a much longer tradition of ministry
(remember, we just celebrated our 175th anniversary a few months ago). I am also reminded that without our
Youth Group back around the 1930s, we may not be here today. If I remember the story correctly, Barry Christian
Church was considering closing. There were only a few dollars in the bank. I understand the Youth Group decided
to do something about that, and held a fund-raiser to “save their Church”. Obviously they were quite successful,
and that fund raiser became our annual turkey dinner tradition that still stands to this day.
I’m not anticipating our Youth Group to ever have to save our church again. In fact this should be reversed—it
should be US, the adults, who save THEM (so to speak). I believe we are responsible for their Christian growth.
Who is this “WE” I am referring to? Well that would be YOU, and US (me included). Did you grow up in a church
with a youth group? What are your memories? How did it benefit you? Did it ever leave you feeling disappointed?
Those are some nice starter questions. I have my own memories of Barry’s Youth Group, as a youth who grew up
here during the 1960s and 70s. So I can answer the above questions from the perspective of both a youth and a
youth leader.
We can find a number of Youth Ministry programs in bookstores, on the internet, and by visiting with other
churches. In fact we’ve done all of these things. But what we haven’t done yet is build a sustainable foundation for
a long-lasting youth ministry, tailored specifically to Barry Christian Church, that won’t go away every time a youth

leader moves on. And since the
average life span of a Youth
Minister is about 18 months, our
youth program needs to be
sustainable enough to outlast our
staff. To develop a youth ministry
program based on off-the-shelf
books or internet formulas as-
sumes there is a “one size fits all”
approach. There isn’t. I believe the
greatest ideas will come from
within Barry Christian Church.
From YOU.
While this is God’s house, we are
given responsibilities for its
upkeep. And that upkeep includes
guiding our youth in their Christian
journeys. Please consider sharing
your ideas for a sustainable Youth
Ministry at Barry. And please,
please consider your involvement
in such a ministry. And please,
please, PLEASE, continue praying
for our church and youth pro-
grams, and for those who feel the
calling to be the hands and feet of
Jesus in leading them.
We want, and NEED, your input. Look me up. My email is [email protected]. I can be reached in the church office mid-day on most days, 816-436-0462, and my mobile is 816-560-5661. Or contact me the old-fashioned way--see me before or after Church any Sunday. I would love to hear your thoughts! In peace and Christian Love,
Jim

As we progress even closer to completing the goal of funding the new Children’s Playground here at Barry Christian Church, we are delighted to share that with the receipt of $490 is past Sunday, August 23rd, our total receipts now stand at $20,323.75 so we are now within $735.25 or 3.4% of completing our goal! As we have mentioned previously, receipts toward the total purchase and installation cost of $21,059.00 have been received from over 51 family units and also from memorial funds. Memorials have contributed significantly to the total expense with half of the playground cost or $10,529.50 coming from the Dorothy Taylor Memorial Fund, recognizing that the care of our children would be of great interest to Dorothy. We are also in receipt of $2087.50 from the Bill Turner and Warren Plum Memorials as well at $123.75 from the children who attended this summer’s Vacation Bible School program back in July. This coming Sunday, August 30th the youth will be hosting a bake sale for the playground and our September Fellowship Lunch after worship on September 13th has been designated as a fundraiser for our playground as well. As Steve Grider, from Recreation Installations has indicated, once a contract is signed after the full funds have been received, it will take just three weeks for all materials to arrive from the various companies and the installation will take about four days. Everyone’s support is greatly appreciated as we progress even closer to the final amount needed to purchase and install the playground! And as we’ve mentioned previously, it will be great to have the playground completed for our children before the fall season concludes!
