educational and charitable purposes. Additionally, these fields further promote the education of future generations and awareness for causes pertaining to the good and honorable values symbolized by our nation’s flag.

Since 2002, hundreds of thousands of flags have been displayed in more than 500 host cities sponsored by communities and organizations across the country. The Healing Field® and Field of Honor® programs are catalysts that promote volunteerism and action in a community. A positive media spotlight is shed on the host cities which benefit local businesses and encourage community pride.

All proceeds from the 2nd Annual Field of Service-Past & Present will benefit the Mariposa Museum and History Center. We hope that you will find that besides the pride of being part of such a worthy cause you will also see the value of supporting and contributing to this special event. Please join and support the Field of Service-Past & Present, flag display in an opportunity to unite as a community in remembering and honoring our heroes.

We would like to thank the individuals, families and business that sponsored our flags. Special thanks to the committee members without all their help, we would not have been able to complete our project.

Sincerely,Celeste Lawrence and Jaq Quinn

What is 4-H Service-Learning?• 4-H service-learning combines service and learning objectives with the intent that the

activity changes both the recipient and the provider of the service. It involves active learning - drawing lessons from the experience of performing service work.  There are three basic components to effective service-learning:

• First, set objectives for skills to be learned or issues to consider.  Plan the project so that learning takes place at the same time work gets done.

• Second, perform the service.• Third, analyze the experience and draw lessons through

discussion with others and reflection on the work.

Greetings. Earlier this year Celeste

Hope Lawrence and I, Jaq Quinn, attended 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington D.C. We visited our national monuments and studied our government in action. For our 4-H Citizenship Washington

Focus Service Learning Project, we are hosting the 2nd ANNUAL FIELD OF SERVICE – PAST & PRESENT. This program will coincide with the week of Veteran’s Day and will bring an incredible visual accent to help participants honor those men and women who have placed duty, honor and country before self.

During the week of Veterans Day November 6, 2016 to November 12, 2016 flags will fly at the Mariposa Museum and History Center. These flags will pay tribute to all Military Men and Women, Emergency First Responders, Fire Fighting Personnel, Law enforcement, and Special People in Our Lives. Remembering those who have served, to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to those that continue to protect our freedom.

We are working with the Healing Field® and Field of Honor® programs who have been created as a symbol of freedom, liberty, honor and respect for the ideals and principles symbolized by the flag of the United States of America. These fields of 3x5 ft. flags on 8 ft. poles are displayed in an area for the purpose of promoting and supporting charitable causes in making the flag of the United States of America available for patriotic,

Linda (Lindy) Brower 1947~2015

Linda (Lindy) BrowerLinda (Lindy) Brower was a loving mother, grandmother, jail officer and 4-H leader for all the kids in Hornitos and Cathey’s Valley. Lindy shared her patriotism, pride and appreciation for the American Flag with everyone.

Lindy was often spotted at the Hornitos and Cathey’s Valley cemetery’s placing flags on local veteran’s graves every holiday. Lindy supported the youth in our community by attending all 4-H events, FFA events, school and sporting events. Lindy was always there with a smile and a bottle of water.

Her coworkers at the jail fondly remember her as “Grandma”.

She was an active member of the Hornitos Patrons Clubs.

Dieter Dubberke Dieter was, and still is, a long-time hero to the youngsters of Mariposa County. He was a businessman who gave back to the community again and again.

He was the creator of the Pioneer Market Sports Challenge Program where a percentage of sales receipts are redeemed and given to the athletic programs at the County High School. His family continues his legacy by supporting the Mariposa Jr. Livestock Auction and several youth programs in Mariposa County.

Mr. Durburke served his country in the US Army from 1957-1960, often as an interpreter for a unit in his former homeland Germany. Each time we see the large American flag he posted at Pioneer Village, we’re reminded of his generosity and patriotism.

Deputy Rudy Mirelez

On Thursday morning, October 1st, 2015 veteran Mariposa County Sheriff’s Deputy Rudy Mirelez logged in for duty, like he has done for the last ten years. The officer responded to State Route 49, where a vehicle had collided with another Sherriff’s Department vehicle. Deputy Mirelez was confronted by a suspect, shots were fired, and the Deputy sustained two gunshot wounds.

Less than 30 days after being shot twice, Deputy Mirelez felt driven to speak to the shaken community to let them know he was ok. He spoke about healing the community, thankfulness and his desire to get back to work protecting and serving the people of Mariposa County. In May 2016, Sheriff Doug Binnewies and staff welcomed Deputy Mirelez back to duty.

Mariposa Museum & History Center

In 1957, a group of community-minded people formed the Mariposa County Historical Society in an effort to keep Mariposa’s history alive.

October 19, 1958 was the date for the dedication of the History Center located at the Masonic building.  Louise Hudson was chosen as the curator for the Mariposa History Center. In 1958, over 2,200 people visited the History Center. The Mason’s Building made a good home for the History Center, but as the collection began to grow, the need for a larger fire-proof building became apparent.

In 1967, Judge Coakley announced that $25,000 dollars had been donated for that purpose. The Mariposa County Board of Supervisors added $25,000 and the Historical Society donated another $1,000.  Coakley estimated that $100,000 would be needed to build a new center that would have

Page 8: In honor and memory of those who serve. Our thanks. · A Program of Colonial Flag ... Ceremony-Master of Ceremony Jaq Quinn Welcome Honor Guard Pledge of Allegiance & 4-H Pledge National

adequate space for the collection and parking.

In 1969, Judge Coakley donated the property on Jessie Street.  Fund raising brought the rest of the money needed for the History Center.

March 7, 1970, was the day of ground breaking for the Library and History Center. Six hundred people came to witness the dedication.  The grounds around the History Center were still under construction and the displays inside were still being put up, but the building was ready to go. The total cost including all the volunteer labors was sent at $206,373.00. The Western Mining Council erected the 5-stamp mill which came from the Golden Key.  It was donated by John Fullum and Harry Odgers.  The operation of the 5-stamp mill is still one of the most requested demonstrations at the Museum.

In 2002, the archival vault was constructed with funds provided from the Uebner Family, Yosemite Bank, Mariposa

County and a host of people throughout the County.

The Mariposa Museum and History Center continues to evolve with each new generation of volunteers and board members. Presently new mining exhibits are in the progress of being built.  A blacksmith shop, a broom making shop and a carriage house have been built for the display of Mariposa history. Tours and demonstrations are routinely done by History Center Volunteers and

thousands of visitors and students come to the Mariposa Museum and History Center yearly.

All this would not be possible, but for the support of the docents, volunteers and the public.  This History Center and Museum has come a long way since 1957 and the future of our past is bright with new discoveries being made each day. Future projects include the building of a pole barn for farm and mining equipment and the continuing of the Summer Docent Program.
