HONEYWELL

With over 90 years’ experience in

equipping more than 500 airports,

we are a reliable, trustworthy partner

for our airport customers worldwide.

Honeywell Airport Systems (formerly

AEG, Daimler-Benz Aerospace) has

always been an industry leader in

product innovation and system solu-

tions. Our customers have benefited

from these and other technological

milestones which mark our compa-

ny’s history, among them the first

“plug-in” semiconductor-based volt-

age monitoring system (in 1975); the

first single lamp monitoring system,

based on monitoring modules built

directly into the apron (in 1985); the

operative deployment of the world‘s

first automatic docking guidance

Airport Systems GmbH

system, based on a superior cam-

era system (in 1995); the first fully

integrated Advanced Surface Move-

ment Guidance and Control System

(A-SMGCS) for ATC workstations (in

1999); and the world’s first deploy-

ment of a fully integrated ground ve-

hicle navigation and location system,

complete with onboard displays, for

the fleet of airport ground vehicles

(in 2005).

The technological leadership of

Honeywell Airport Systems is based

on close cooperation with both our

customers and our scientific part-

ners, all the while bearing in mind

that airports require technology

which meets the highest standards

in terms of reliability and availability.

A reliable air traffic control system is

an absolute prerequisite for the safe

and economical flow of air traffic. Safe

take-offs and landings, especially in

the case of bad visibility or at night,

place high demands on personnel and

material. In addition to radio beacons

and radio navigational aids, airfield

ground lighting, as an optical aid for

landing and taxiing, is an important

element of an airport’s equipment.

Honeywell Airport Systems designs,

manufactures and installs complete

airfield ground lighting systems for

airports, ranging from the individual

lighting units to series circuit trans-

formers and plastic masts, right up

to control and monitoring systems,

including single lamp control and

monitoring, routing systems, aircraft

docking systems, and surface move-

ment guidance systems.

Investment and logistics costs are re-

duced considerably due to the modu-

lar design of our lighting systems.

Approach Lighting

Approaches are precision work. In

addition to the close contact with the

ground station, the pilot requires a vi-

sual guidance system that informs him

of the current state of the approach.

This task is fulfilled by our approach

lighting with its approach flash light-

ing, high and low intensity approach

lights, and precision approach path

indicators. Our modular system allows

the multiple use of a large number of

modules in different components.

This makes keeping spare parts sim-

pler and more economical.

Our lights are fully compliant with ICAO

lighting requirements. A light does not

have to be re-adjusted when replac-

ing a lamp, as the adjustment is not

altered due to the mechanical con-

struction and narrow manufacturing

tolerances of the lighting.

Irrespective of whether we are talking

about the correct touchdown location,

the distance of the aircraft from the

runway, or its position relative to the

centre line, the devices and systems

from Honeywell Airport Systems offer

an orientation guide par excellence.

The inset lighting developed and used

by Honeywell Airport Systems are

characterized by their low elevation

above the level of the taxiway. The

resulting advantage is clear: insensitiv-

ity to dirt and impurities by means of

an extensively planar installation of the

rim prism.

Taxiway Lighting Systems and Guidance Signs

Taxiways are equipped with lighting

systems for the quick flow of taxiway

traffic between the runways and the

terminal apron. They indicate the

course of the taxiways and facilitate

orientation for the pilot. Blue omnidi-

rectional lights are used for taxiway

edge lighting. These can be addition-

ally equipped with daylight screens.

The taxiway centerline lighting con-

sists of inset lights with single or twin

directional beams. Stop bar lighting

consists of red single directional inset

lights. Information signs are set up

around the taxiway to guide the pilot.

Honeywell Airport Systems provides

internally illuminated information signs

conforming to ICAO regulations for

this application.

Obstruction Lights and Special Lights

Obstruction lights are mostly used in

the areas of approach paths and hol-

ding patterns in order to warn pilots of

obstructions. Depending on the task

to be performed and on local condi-

tions, high, medium, and low intensity

lights are used.

The location of the airport is marked

by airport beacons. These are available

as rotating beacons or as fixed flash

lights. Omnidirectional light characteris-

tics are achieved by four flash lights,

transposed by 90 degrees.

The reliable supply, control, regulation

and monitoring of airfield ground

lighting systems is indispensable to

flight safety. Our operations and moni-

toring system complies with all appli-

cable standards.

Trouble-free operation is guaranteed

by ensuring that even before a failure

occurs that leads to a suspension of

operations, information is already

available on possible irregularities in

the system. This allows preventive

maintenance measures to be initiated.

Type ALS switching and control sys-

tems can be used for the control, re-

gulation, and supply of single sections

Power Supply, Control, Regulation, and Monitoring

of the airfield ground lighting system.

These are normally installed in lighting

stations. All relevant data from the

individual systems are acqui-red via

the networked computers of the

control and monitoring system and

collected at the technical work-

stations. In this way, all operation and

status reports for the entire airfield

ground lighting system are available in

the control room at all times.

The most important operational infor-

mation appears on a display in the

tower where optimized command

inputs are provided, thus giving

controllers in the tower a simple and

safe means of controlling the entire

system.

Lighting installations for runways,

taxiways, and stop bars constitute

a comprehensive system in modern

airports. Honeywell Airport Systems

developed a computerized control

and monitoring system (CMS) for

airport lighting systems which facili-

tates operation and monitoring of

these complex systems and ensures

that all safety requirements are met.

This system offers not only convenient

workstations for tower and technical

personnel, but also a series of practi-

cal functions which noticeably facili-

tate the daily operational processes

and optimize system monitoring.

Control and Monitoring System

The airfield lighting control and moni-

toring system utilizes a decentralized,

scaleable process computer system

which features very short reaction

times. The reliability of this already

highly reliable system may be further

boosted by incorporating redundant

computer systems and data commu-

nications links.

The system’s user interfaces in both

the tower workstations and the engi-

neering maintenance workstations are

ready for the integration of other

systems.

Conventionally designed power sup-

plies for lighting systems require sepa-

rate series circuits when switching.

For safety reasons, these systems are

often distributed over two or three

series circuits, which results in high

installation costs, particularly in light-

ing systems with a small number of

lights, such as stop bars or segments

of the runway centerline. Normally,

these series circuits are equipped with

lamp failure monitoring systems which

are only able to detect the number

of failed lamps, but not their exact

location.

Honeywell’s single lamp control and

monitoring feature allows control and

monitoring of individual lamps and

groups of lamps within one series

circuit. This opens up different per-

spectives for the safe and cost-

effective design of airfield lighting

systems. Since the location of a lamp

failure can be pinpointed, monitoring

according to ICAO recommendations

is now possible (detection of failure

of neighboring lamps).

The balanced utilization of taxiways

and the early detection and resolution

of conflicts via a taxiway guidance

system are significant factors in im-

proving safety and optimizing airfield

operations.

Taxiing times can be reduced. No-

conflict, continuous taxiing reduces

fuel consumption and costs, as well as

the environmental impacts of exhaust

fumes and noise.

Our system ensures that the assigned

taxiway can quickly and confidently be

identified, even when visibility is limited.

And a taxiway guidance system

enables even pilots who are unfamiliar

with the airfield to orientate themselves

safely, even under conditions of

restricted vision (CAT II/III).

Ground controllers in charge of sur-

face movements are included in the

traffic control workflow via appropri-

ately equipped and configured work-

stations. Planning tools allow the

graphical representation of taxiing

traffic and facilitate the prediction of

possible conflicts.

tems. This enables the company to

continue to meet the requirements for

control and monitoring systems for

lighting units for use on helicopter

landing pads right up to CAT II airports

under stringent safety conditions.

User interfaces include an operator

control unit, a graphical depiction of

the airport, and an alarm window.

The equipment features touch screens

with flat-screen technology (TFT-LCD)

with low power consumption, excel-

lent brightness and high contrast.

Access, or the ability to view the diffe-

rent screens, is password-controlled.
