Hamburg Airport is a complex infrastructure with two terminal buildings connected by the Airport plaza. Each terminal is connected to a different pier North and South. A retail expansion proposal aims to endow the access to the South Pier with a new retail area and new remote gates for enhanced capacity. The intervention entails actuations on three levels of the building used by arriving and departing passengers.

Buro Happold was appointed by GMP Architekten to study several design options for the new retail area and circulation space. The aim of the study was to analyse the design solutions according to the best impact on space utilisation, passengers comfort, retail visibility and hence retail revenue opportunities.

A combination of static and dynamic simulation models for rapid design testing and comparison were developed using our in-house people flow simulation software SmartMove.

All designs were informed using a scenario that considered a normal peak hour with arrivals and departures passengers passing by the new facilities.

As a further optioneering exercise engaging the design team, a new option was proposed to maximise retail visibility and enhance passenger experience, aiming to potential better revenue opportunities.
