Heavy Metals

Heavy Metals - Introduction

• Toxic metals / toxic elements / heavy metals have always been present in earth’s crust. Humans have created a situation in which exposure levels are now incompatible with optimal biological function. The industrial revolution was the main culprit.


• In this lesson, we’ll focus on five specific toxic elements, but there are others:

– Mercury

– Lead

– Arsenic

– Cadmium

– Aluminium


• In Klinghardt‘s words, some metals are extremelytoxic, even in the most minute dose. Others have lowtoxicity, even in high doses. However, dependent on the dose, all metals can become toxic. Iron can causesevere oxidative damage, copper may compromiseliver function and visual acuity, selenium and arsenichave been known to be used to murder people. Other factors effect toxicity, which we‘ll come on to.


• An important difference between toxic organic compounds and toxic metals is that although organic compounds can be chemically destroyed by exposure to heat, light or chemical and microbiological attack, toxic metals are virtually indestructible.


• They tend to accumulate undetected in the body over time. The insidious rise in biological levels or body burdens of toxic metals eventually threaten normal body processes, and, in many individuals, become a clearly relevant issue. Stressful episodes can become triggers that bring latent toxic metabolic inhibitions or destructive challenges into active symptoms.


“Toxins almost never come alone. They come in synergistic package-deals. Mercury alone is toxic.

Together with zinc it is many times more toxic. Add in copper & silver (dental amalgams) and the detrimental

effect increases manyfold. Together with mercaptanand thioether (dental toxins) the toxic amalgam effectsgrow exponentially. Add in PCB & dioxin as in fish and

the effect of the methyl mercury in fish increasesmanyfold. In synergy, 1 plus 1 = 100.“

Heavy Metals - Absorption

• Toxins are absorbed through mucus membranes and skin:

– Nasal passageways

– Oral cavity

– Lungs

– Gut

– Possibly even the eyes

• According to Klinghardt, from the moment of mucosal uptake the toxins can potentially take four different paths: – Neuronal uptake and via axonal transport to the spinal

chord and from here to the brain.

– Venous uptake and via the portal vein back to the liver.

– Lymphatic uptake and via the thoracic duct to the subclavian vein.

– Uptake by bowel bacteria and tissues of the intestinal tract.

• Different toxic elements have different properties, and can interfere with metabolism in several key ways (“foreign-coin-in-the-slot” analogy):

– Membrane proteins

– Structural proteins

– Enzymes

– Membrane lipids

– Hormone receptors

– DNA and RNA

• Inorganic metal to an organic “species” (e.g. inorganic mercury to methylmercury, making it more fat soluble – neurotoxicity increases).

• Formation of bonds with sulfhydryl of cysteine amino acids, leading to structural protein changes.

• Free radical generation > lipid peroxidation > oxidative damage > cell death.

Heavy Metals - Aluminium

• Aluminium is prominent in our environment is the third most prevalent element and the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, representing approximately 8% of total mineral component. It is called the “soft-in-the-head” mineral because of its tendency to have a detrimental effect your brain, where it may impair memory and cognition.


• According to emedicine:

“Up to this time, no biological function has been attributed to this metal, and, more importantly,

aluminum accumulation in tissues and organs results in their dysfunction and toxicity.”


• Vaccines – aluminium has replaced mercury in some vaccines.

• Canned drinks , aluminium cookware, aluminium foil

• Antacids• Antiperspirants and

deodorants• Drinking water• Baking powders • Table salt – anti-caking

additive

• Food additives in grains and cheese

• Bleached flour• Fluoridated water leaches

• Aluminium is mostly absorbed through stomach and intestine. People with low calcium have increased Al absorption and neurotoxicity. Iron deficiency in animals seems to increase Al absorption. Taking “citrate” supplements also seems to increase absorption. Al is detoxified through the biliary pathways.


• Al accumulates in the nervous system, bone, immune system, liver and red blood cells. It can interfere with haeme synthesis haemoglobin) and enzyme activity measured in blood, kidney and liver. Much of the research has been on people who are on dialysis.


• Research suggests:

– Exposure to Al causes neuron apoptosis and disruption of mitochondria

– Decreases ferritin and haemoglobin (dialysis)

– Associations with hypertension

– Dermatitis after vaccines

– Interferes with catecholamine metabolism

– Interferes with vitamin D and PTH metabolism

– Horses fed high Al forage develop Crohn’s like histology

– May affect gut microbiota (increased pathogenicity)


• Al is most closely associated with:– Abnormal speech– Myoclonic jerks– Progressive encephalopathy– Alzheimer’s disease– Parkinson’s disease– Multiple sclerosis?– Predisposition to fractures (osteomalacia)– Growth and development issues in kids

• Possible symptoms on a day-to-day basis:– Fatigue– Flatulence (excess gas)– Headaches– Colic– A tendency to have more colds (immune dysfunction)– Heartburn– Loss of memory– Problems with coordination– Difficulty concentrating– Confusion – Dryness of skin and mucous membranes

• Arsenic is infamous for its use for murdering people! But we’re obviously more concerned with its chronic effects, which might range from simple, day to day symptoms, to significant and possibly lethal diseases.


• Pesticides & insecticides• Chicken and eggs – chicken

feed can have very high arsenic levels

• Drinking water Some protein powders

• Some herbal supplements• Contaminated wine• Arsenic-treated wood• Glues

• Some commercial fruit juices

• Cosmetic products (in one study, 20% of the cosmetic products tested contained arsenic)

• Cigarette smoke• Metal foundry / industry• Possibly via the placenta –

i.e. mum passes arsenic to her foetus


• Laundry detergent

• Coal burning

• Industrial smog

• Mining operations

• Metal manufacturing

• Glass production

• Previously used in some wallpapers

• Previously used in some paints

• Previously used in some medications


“The organoarsines arsenobetaine and arsenocholineare non-toxic forms of arsenic that are present in many

foods, especially shellfish and fish such as cod and haddock.”

• Acute poisoning obviously isn’t the same as insidious bioaccumulation over time. Lethal arsenic poisoning is characterized by toxic hepatitis and pancreatitis, neurological dysfunction, respiratory difficulty, renal failure and cardiovascular disturbance. It can cause skin neoplasm and dermatosis.


• Consuming large quantities would typically cause acute symptoms such as:

– Nausea and vomiting

– Intestinal tract inflammation

– Diarrhea two hours later

– Essentially “gastroenteritis”


• In very serious arsenic poisoning situations, the following complications can occur:

– Salt and water loss due to severe diarrhea

– Shock

– Kidney failure

– Coma

– Respiratory (breathing) paralysis.


• Long-term exposure to ingested inorganic arsenic is associated with peripheral vascular disease (PVD) in the “blackfoot disease” hyperendemic area in Taiwan.


• Over time, arsenic has the ability to cause:

– A reduction in the production of red and white blood cells

– Significant oxidative stress / oxidative damage*

– Nerve damage

– Kidney problems

– Damage to blood vessels

– Neurological issues

– Diabetes

– Cancer (skin, lung, liver, kidney, prostate, bladder)


• During my research into heavy metals, I came across a 2010 document by the President’s Cancer Panel (in the USA). The document is titled Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk – What We Can Do Now, and was written by LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., MD and Margaret L. Kripke, PhD. It’s a long document but it provides undeniable evidence of how environmental toxins cause symptoms and disease.


“Ecologic, cohort and case control studies of highly exposed populations have linked inorganic arsenic in drinking water with skin,

lung, bladder and kidney cancer in both sexes and with prostate cancer in men. Both the EPA and International Agency for Research

on Cancer classify ingested inorganic arsenic as a known human carcinogen. Inorganic arsenic is also associated with numerous non-cancer conditions, including Gl, neurologic, blood system, endocrine,

respiratory, skin, reproductive & developmental effects.”

• Dr. Andrew Cutler, PhD (author of several highly scientific books on heavy metal poisoning, especially mercury) lists the following symptoms of chronic arsenic poisoning…


• Anguish• Restlessness• Fear• Worry• Selfishness• Self-injurious and vicious

behavior • Fearful dreams• Crave coffee and milk• Short menstrual cycles• Feel sleepy a lot

• Digestive problems• Food allergies• Headaches• Pins and needles• Tender and painful feet• Numbness or tingling of

• According to research cites in the Metametrix Lab Eval Manual, toxicity expression seems to be exacerbated by low antioxidant (especially glutathione and vitamin E) and sulphur-containing amino acids (e.g. methionine).


• The authors of the President’s cancer report state:

“Some evidence suggests that diets deficient in micronutrients such as vitamins B2, B6, B12 and folic acid may increase susceptibility to arsenic-induced cancers.”

Heavy Metals - Cadmium

• Cadmium is among the most toxic of the heavy metals. It is extremely toxic, with acceptable levels one tenth that of most of the other toxic metals.


• One of the most common entry routes is via tobacco smoke – about 10% of the cadmium in tobacco smoke enters general circulation. Smoking more than doubles blood cadmium levels. How many cigarettes have you smoked or passively smoked?


• Major sources of cadmium exposure include:– Industry

– Spray paint

– Tobacco smoke

– Plants grown in cadmium rich soils

– Car emissions

– Processed food

– Seafood

– Kids’ jewellery

– Batteries

– Breast milk


• Cadmium primarily accumulates in the liver and kidneys and its absorption is enhanced in people who are iron deficient. Cadmium competes with zinc at all its enzyme binding sites. This obviously results in a loss of enzyme activity, sometimes called “enzyme poisoning.” Up to 300 enzymes or more require zinc.

• Acute exposure can cause death in humans and animals. Symptoms are mild during exposure, but within a few days pulmonary and pneumonitis develop, leading to respiratory failure.


• Exposure is associated with:

– Renal tubular damage

– High blood pressure

– Exacerbate emphysema in smokers

– Decrease testis size

– Impaired endocrine function in men (higher FSH and E)

– Increased bone loss and bone disorders

– Possibly diabetes, cancer, mental & emotional disorders (Dr. Lawrence Wilson, MD).


• Cadmium toxicity symptoms may include:– Alopecia– Anaemia– Arthritis– Blood sugar problems– Bone problems– Cholesterol elevation– Decreased fertility– Hyperactivity in children– Inflammation and pain– Migraine headaches– Reduced sex drive– Skin aging

• Lead is ubiquitous and has the following sources:– Passed from mother to foetus during pregnancy

– Old homes (paint and lead-lined pipes)

– Painted dishes and cookware

– Canned foods

– Make up Lead solder

– Toys from countries such as China

– Children’s jewellery

– Certain processed foods (crops pick it up from soil)

– Lead fallout on the ground after decades of leaded petrol

– Mining, industrial pollution, smelting plants

• Leaded paint was banned in 1972 and leaded petrol was phased out in the early 1980s. It’s on the ground and is freed up when people renovate old homes, etc. People in urban areas are likely to be more contaminated than people from rural areas.

of numerous toxic elements, including lead, thallium, as

well as organochlorines, including DDT.”

• If derived from bone, calcium supplements can be a source of lead, as lead accumulates in bone. Using non-organic bones to make bone broth surely carries the same risk but isn’t mentioned anywhere.

• Exposure comes from inhalation, ingestion via food/water and from skin contact. Adults who are well nourished absorb approximately 1-10% of the lead they ingest. Absorption increases when the gut is compromised or when Ca, Mg, Fe, vitamins C and D are low. Children may absorb up to 50% ingested lead. Absorbed lead is rapidly incorporated into bone and erythrocytes, though eventually, lead will distribute into all tissues.

• Lead causes oxidative stress and structural protein changes. It also interferes with calcium ion channels, receptors and enzymes, as well as some magnesium dependent enzymes.

– Irritability or aggression

– Hyperactivity

– Lack of interest in being playful

• Well, what can we say about mercury? It is, of course, a pervasive and major problem that’s received much wider attention than toxicity from other metals. I can’t do it justice here – there’s just too much information. A very conclusive pool of data exists proving mercury’s dangers (see Huggins, Crinnion, Cutler, Klinghardt and others). Cutler alone wrote a 225 page textbook – Amalgam Illness Diagnosis and Treatment.


• One of the main reasons mercury has become such a major problem is its use in mercury amalgam fillings. Mercury has been purposefully put in people’s mouths since the 1800s and has also been used in vaccines, not to mention hundreds of other uses.


• The term “mad as a hatter” originates from the 1700 and 1800s when hat makers had mercury toxicity from using it in the manufacture of felt-brimmed hats. Isaac Newton experienced mood and personality changes when studying the properties of mercury. It would appear future generations didn’t heed the warning signs…


“Mercury is ubiquitous in the environment, and in our mouths in the form of “silver” amalgams. Once

introduced to the body through food or vapor, mercury is rapidly absorbed and accumulates in several tissues, leading to increased oxidative damage, mitochondrial

dysfunction, and cell death.”

“Mercury primarily affects neurological tissue, resulting in numerous neurological symptoms, and also affects

the kidneys and the immune system. It causes increased production of free radicals and decreases the

availability of antioxidants. It also has devastating effects on the glutathione content of the body, giving rise to the possibility of increased retention of other

environmental toxins.”

• The Earth’s crust releases approx. 30,000 tons mercury into the atmosphere per year as natural outgassing from rock. Mining, smelting and fossil fuel combustion increase this manifold. It is used in electric switch manufacture, electrolysis, amalgams, fungicides and others. It also accumulates in fish, with those higher on the food chain containing the highest concentrations.


• Mercury has different forms. In fact, all metals canexist in the body with different kinds of chemicalbonds and as different molecules. According toKlinghardt, mercury appears to be the king-pin in thecascade of events in which metals becomepathogenic. Mercury can be present as metallic mercury (HgO), as mercury salt (e.g. mercurychloride – HG+), or as methyl mercury (HG++). Methyl mercury is 50 times more toxic than metallic mercury.


• Metallic mercury is fairly inert and non-toxic, but it is converted chemically or enzymatically into methyl mercury (gut bugs can readily do this). Ethyl mercury is also toxic and is released from certain drugs/vaccines (thimerasol).


• Methyl mercury is the form found in fish. Bioaccumulation in predatory fish is 10,000-100,000 times higher than found in the water.

“Analysis of commercial fish in New Jersey markets found bioaccumulation to be highest in yellow fin tuna,

chilean sea bass, bluefish and snapper.”

• In 2002 it was demonstrated that the mean total mercury dose in vaccines received by six-month olds was 2.6 times the adult minimal risk level for acute

mercury chloride exposure.


• There is an excellent discussion of how mercury came to be used in amalgams, and all the controversies involved, in Hal Huggins’ book “It’s All In Your Head”.


“Silver “amalgam” dental fillings typically weigh between 1.5-2.0 g, with approximately 50 percent of

the material being elemental mercury. When no chewing occurs, individuals with amalgam fillings on

occlusal surfaces have been found to have oral levels of mercury vapor nine times greater than those without

amalgams.”


“Upon chewing, the same individuals had a six-fold increase in oral elemental mercury levels, resulting in a

54-times greater level of mercury vapor in their oral cavities than persons without amalgams. Serial

measurements of these individuals found mercury concentrations remained elevated during 30 minutes of continuous chewing, and then declined slowly over 90

minutes after chewing ceased.”

• Animal models have demonstrated that mercury from dental amalgams concentrates in the kidney, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and jaw. The choroid plexus, an important part of the blood-brain barrier, acts as a sink for mercury and other heavy metals.


• It has also been shown that mercury is selectively concentrated in the human brain in the medial basal nucleus, amygdala, and hippocampus regions (all of which are involved with memory function), in the granular layer of the cerebellum, and in sensory neurons of the dorsal root ganglia.


• Mercury has also been shown to be taken up by the retina and in granule cells of layer IV in the visual cortex, which can cause a reversible impairment of color perception.


“A wide variety of debilitating and supposedly incurable conditions may actually be due to chronic mercury

poisoning. Mercury poisoning can be easily cured if it is recognized. These conditions are seldom cured because mercury poisoning is believed to be rare. It is not. It is quite common. Thus, many people suffer needlessly.”

• The list of symptoms associated with chronic mercury toxicity is profound. Here is a list, compiled from Cutler, Crinnion and the Lab Evals manual. Andy Cutler pertinently states:

“I discuss I wide symptoms, diseases, and frightening problems in this book. Don’t worry that you will

experience all of them! No matter how sick you get, you will in fact only experience a few of them.”


• Your clients and patients are not going to experience all these symptoms at once, and certainly won’t develop half a dozen serious diseases simultaneously. It’s prudent to explain this to them to alleviate fear and worry.


• Symptoms are grouped or clustered differently depending whose information you read. In the end, mercury affects all the major components of the Olympic Rings:

– Endocrine / hormone

– Digestive

– Detox

– Immune

– Neurological


• Endocrine / hormonal effects (blue ring)

– Blocks or affects the HPA, HPT and HPG axes.

– Affects liver’s ability to convert and process hormones (e.g. T4>T3 & estrogen detoxification)

– ADH (anti-diuretic hormone)

– Insulin and glucagon (blood sugar)

– Hypogonadism

• Digestive effects (yellow ring):

– Mercury accumulates in the gut due to the density of neurons.

– Any and every GI symptom could theoretically develop.

– Reduced immune function.

– Yeast and fungal overgrowth is strongly related to Hg toxicity, which causes…any and every GI symptom!


• Detox effects (black ring):

– Do we need to spell this out?• It’s a toxin – it’s going to affect the detox system!

– Mercury reduces glutathione and antioxidants• Mercury binds irreversibly to GSH, causing the loss of up to

two GSH molecules per molecule of mercury.

– Its presence reduces the body’s ability to remove other toxins.

– Klinghardt states that a reduction in Hg burden enables the body to deal with other toxins much more effectively.


• Immune system effects (green ring):– Mercury causes apoptosis in monocytes and

decreases phagocytic activity

– Methylmercury causes increased lymphocyte apoptosis

– Reduced production of TNF alpha and IL-1

– Capable of immune activation, leading to autoimmunity, while simultaneously reducing the cellular immune response, leading to increased infection, which is the classic appearance of immunotoxicity (Crinnion)


• Nervous system effects:

– Mercury is neurotoxic. Methylmercury accumu-lates in the brain and becomes associated with mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, golgicomplex, nuclear envelopes, and lysosomes.

– Inhibits synaptic uptake of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.

– Reduction of glutathione affects enzyme activity and ultimately nerves.


“In nerve fibers methylmercury is localized primarily in myelin sheaths, where it leads to demyelination, and in mitochondria. Pathologic examination of patients with

methylmercury poisoning indicates the cerebellar cortex is prominently affected, with granule cells being more susceptible than Purkinje cells. Typically, glial cells

are spared direct damage, although reactive gliosis may occur.”

• Common symptoms:– Irritability, excitability, enhanced sensitivity to

stimulation– Depression– Short-term memory loss– Difficulty concentrating– Insomnia– Fatigue– Tremor & twitches– Muscle rigidity– Cognitive function deficits


• More symptoms:– Impairment of senses (smell, vision, hearing)– Increased sweating– Increases susceptibility to infection– Any GI disturbance

• Candida and other bad bugs

– Gingivitis (gum disease)– Stomatitis– Myalgia, arthritis– Weight loss– Metallic taste


• Mercury’s heavy oxidative toll on the body has been postulated to be a cause of increased rates of fatal heart attacks and other forms of cardiovascular disease. According to Dr. Stephen Sinatra, a prominent cardiologist, the cardiovascular system is also susceptible to mercury’s effects.


“An Italian study showed patients with blocked arteries had 5 times the amount of mercury in their heart cells

as healthy subjects.”

“Patients with cardiomyopathy had 22,000 times (yes –twenty-two thousand times) as much mercury in their

cells.”


“In another study of 1,833 men, those with high mercury levels on a hair test were twice as likely to

suffer a heart attack.”

“Finnish researchers who studied the rate of progression of carotid plaque (which leads to stroke) found smoking to be the foremost accelerator with

mercury a close second. Everyone knows smoking is a heart disease risk factor, but mercury is never

discussed.”


• Hal Huggins has found in clinical experience that mercury (and other heavy metals and substances to a point) are involved with, or directly cause many diseases (see the following slide). A chart is available from his website:

• When you examine the literature reviews and combined clinical experience of the real experts in this area, you can’t help but conclude that heavy metals are causing problems. Our job is to educate our clients and patients about their possible effects. Whether we can administer appropriate detoxification protocols depends on our legal status.
