  • Heat Homework 1- Conductors and Insulators

    1. A material in a building catalogue is listed as being

    ‘a good conductor of heat’

    a) Explain what is meant by a good conductor of heat

    b) Give two examples of materials that are good conductors of heat.

    2. A girl decides to bake a cake. She has the following items on her

    kitchen work top.

A metal pot, an oven glove, a glass measuring cup, a wooden spoon,

a plastic mixing bowl, a metal rolling pin, a paper recipe book,

a metal baking tray for her cakes, paper cake cases and some tin foil.

List the items which are good conductors and those which are

good insulators in the table below.

Good Conductors of Heat Good Insulators of heat

    3. Some metals conduct heat better than others, put the following metals in

order of how they conduct heat, starting with the best conductor first.

    Aluminium, Steel, Copper, Brass

    4. Design, and give a detailed description of, a pot that would

    (i) be good at letting through heat at the base of the pot

(ii) not transfer heat well from the sides of the pot

(iii) not burn your hands when you lifted it up.

  • Heat Homework 2- Air

    1. Your Science teacher demonstrated the following experiment to

    you in class.

Describe what happened and explain why it happened.

    2. Why do you not burn your hands when you drink hot tea from a

    polystyrene cup.

    3. Research using the internet or any other means what tog measures

    when buying a bed quilt.

    4. (a) Describe how some animals keep warm during the winter

    months.

    (b) Some animals shed their coats at different times of the year.

    (i) Give 2 examples of animals that do this.

    (ii) Explain why this happens.

  • Heat Homework 3- Convection

    1. Explain how the experiment shown below shows us that water

    is not a good conductor.

    2. Copy and complete the diagram shown below in to you jotter.

and show the path of The heated water

    3. Copy and complete the following paragraph in your jotters.

    Water and _ _ _ use _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ currents to heat up.

    Hot water _ _ _ _ _ and cold water _ _ _ _ _ downwards.

    Hot air also _ _ _ _ _ and cooler air _ _ _ _ _ downwards.

    4. Describe one use of convection in your home.

Calculating Energy used by a water heater

1.Convert the following to Joules (Multiply by 1000)

    (a) 5kJ (b) 2.5kJ (c) 200kJ (d) 5.75kJ

    2. Convert the following to kJ (divide by 1000)

    (a) 1000J (b) 2500J (c) 7500 (d) 15000J

    3. Convert the following times to seconds (multiply by 60)

    (a) 1 minute (b) 5 minutes (c) 1 Hour (d) 24 hours ( 1 day)

    4. Calculate the power of the following water heaters using the equation for power.

    (a) 1800J is converted to heat energy in 60s

    (b) 150.000J is converted to heat in 300s

    (c) 360000J is converted to heat in 3600s

    (d) 180,000 J is converted to heat in 900s

    5. A 1.2kW electrical water heater was on for 3 hours. ( Extension)

    (a) Calculate the number of units of electricity used in the 3 hours.

    (b) If one unit costs 12p how much would it cost to have the water heater on for

    this length of time.

  • Heat Homework 5- Radiation

    1. Describe how radiation travels from the Sun to Earth.

    2. How fast does heat radiation travel from the Sun to Earth?

    3. Explain why it is better to wear dark clothes rather than light

    coloured clothes in the winter.

    4. A man paints a radiator in one room white and a radiator in another

    room black.

    (a) Which radiator will emit more heat, explain your answer.

    (b) Some people put silver paper behind a radiator. Give a reason

    Why they do this.

    5. Why do people in hot countries paint their houses white?

    Earth Sun

  • Heat Homework 6- Heat loss from our homes

    1. A thermal imaging camera can detect heat being given off by an

    Object.

    (a) What is the name given to this type of radiation?

    (b) What speed does this type of radiation travel at?

    2. A thermogram of heat loss in a house is shown below.

State where is heat being lost from this house, justify your answer.

    3. We need to prevent heat loss from our homes.

Copy and complete the table below.

Where heat can be lost in

    our home

    How this can be prevented
