RENOVATING ON A TIGHT BUDGET, Lauren Li still managed to employ a whole host of great ideas to make her Melbourne, 1970s brick-veneer unit a comfortable, light-filled home – and include a few luxury items to boot.
The 68-sq-m, two-bedroom unit is also home to husband Phil and daughters Indigo and Coco, so practical, space-saving, airy solutions were a must. “We took out the laundry to open up the kitchen/dining area, and removed a cupboard to extend the bathroom to include a Euro laundry,” Lauren explains. “We use every inch of space so I’m really pleased with the minor alterations we made to the floorplan.” While the front door opens to the living room, Lauren created an “entry” with wall-mounted shoe storage, mirror, hooks and rug. In the living area, a large bookcase offers storage and “hides” the TV. Floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains create a feel of height. By the dining table, a Lauren-designed bench allows for extra bods. And in the renovated bathroom, a handy double basin was installed, and laundry, too – at bathtime, dirty clothes are popped straight into the machine.
Around the home, a few pieces were splurged on “to trick up the inexpensive items”, Lauren says. She couldn’t resist the “super-comfortable” Arflex “Pecorelle” armchair from Poliform in the living room. “It was a splurge but I fell in love with it,” she says. In the renovated kitchen, Anthropologie knobs add interest to Ikea cabinets, and a Stone Italiana bench and handmade Perini tile splashback add luxe. Tapware was a splurge, too. “As they’re something used all day they need to be functional and look great,” Lauren says. While original timber floors feature, there’s carpet in bedrooms. “It’s beautiful to walk on and adds luxury.” Luxe for less. R
Doorway to sleeptimeIn the living room, a ’70s archway was replaced with a barn-like, steel sliding door, from eBay, to minimise noise. V-groove wall panelling is used as a feature. Kids drawings hang on the Menu “My Spot” line. The Via Martine photo came from Norsu Interiors.
Ruggy talesA large Ikea “Stockholm” rug makes the room feel
generous. “My pet hate is rugs that are too small – they
float around the room and don’t do anything,” Lauren
says. The Moroso “Bloomy” yellow chair is from Hub. A

Go for colourLauren loves colour in her renovated kitchen. “If I get sick of the Ikea cupboards, I can swap them for other fronts as they’re generally inexpensive.” The cupboard handles are from Anthropologie. The brass mixer is from Sussex Taps. Vintage Ercol chairs work with modern surfaces.
Double relaxing Lauren removed a cupboard to extend her renovated bathroom, above left, and include a laundry. Storage under the Ikea double vanity is useful, too. “Having a double vanity was non-negotiable!” she says. “Although the bathroom is small, we managed to fit it in and it works well for our family.” A round Caprice mirror, from Mirror Mirror, opens up and softens the space. Sleeping beauty In the master bedroom, above right, carpet enhances the cosy feel while the white Globe West
bedside tables are “visually light”. An upholstered bedhead is from Forty Winks. “It’s practical, soft and looks great,” Lauren says. Artwork by Hannah Fox. A
Lauren’s loves “The colour of the kitchen cupboards keeps the space interesting, giving it life. I also love the patterned floor tiles in the bathroom. Lighting works really well; we’ve used various wall lights and pendants that allow for flexibility and create atmosphere. V-groove wall
panelling adds texture and enhances the beach location – we’re wedged between the beach and Parkdale, a Melbourne bayside suburb.”
Plan D “The next plan is for the courtyard. It needs a new deck and paving so that we can use the space for dining,” Lauren says.

Welcome home“Although there isn’t an entry as such, we’ve made the most of the space behind the door – we needed to maximise the storage,” Lauren says. An Ikea shoe cabinet does the trick, with room for keys on top. A Safari Living “Brita Sweden” rug zones the space.
Brassy girlIt’s the attention to detail that gives this home panache. The brass wall light in the kitchen, from Cedar & Moss, ties in with the tumbled brass-finish tapware; the patina wears beautifully.
Room for all“The custom-designed bench maximises space and allows us to squish lots of friends in for dinner,” Lauren says.
