SPEAKING OF COLLEGE football websites. There are four, as far as I know, with weekly rankings for

NCAA Division II teams. The unofficial “official” rankings are from the American

Football Coaches Association. That group has committees at theregional and national level to make the weekly poll.

D2Football.com selects the top teams each week and usuallythe poll is quite similar to the AFCA selections.

Massey’s Ratings are interesting in that they are usually muchdifferent than the others.

Kenneth Massey is a sports statistician who uses a methodologyfor ranking teams in numerous sports and classifications.

The interesting thing about Massey is that he is on themathematics faculty at Carson-Newman (Tenn.), an NCAA DivisionII school.

A fourth ranking is the HEROsports.com poll. It has somewhatdifferent selections than the AFCA and D2Football.com polls.

Fans love polls, especially when you have a team in them. Andthere are plenty of them now being compiled not only in football butbasketball and baseball as well.

QUARTERBACK CADE DYAL has overtaken some ofJohnny Manziel’s records at Kerrville Tivy High School and he’sthreatening even more.

Dyal is the son of former Javelina tight end Mike Dyal.Going into last weekend’s games, he had thrown for 80

touchdown passes, four more than Manziel had at Tivy.He was 952 passing yards short of Manziel’s 7,626 record

yards in his career.Dyal recently passed for 500 yards in a game and that missed

Manziel’s single-game record by three.Cade’s mother is the former Lisa Maples of Kingsville and his

grandparents are Thomas and Darlene Maples, also of Kingsville.

THE UNITED STATES Track & Field/Cross Country CoachesAssociation website published an updated all-time best list forNCAA Division II outdoor track and field events last week, and theJavelinas have several at the top.

Darrell Green still has the best 100-meter dash time. He ran a10.08 at the Angelo State Relays.

Jeron Robinson dominated the high jump list. He has the all-time best height, the second best, the third best and the fourth best.He has cleared 7-7 to claim the top spot.

Robinson is in his senior season with the Javelinas.Patrick Delice has the second best time in the 200 (20.34) and

400 (44.58).Green has the sixth best time in the 200 (20.48).The Javelina team of Clif Norman, Delice, Willie Johnson and

Anthony Phillips ran the 10th best time in the 400-meter relay.Matt Hickl’s 18-0.5 height in the pole vault is the 13th best in theevent.

The Javelina track and field program has long been rated as one(Continued on Page 4)

of the best in NCAA Division II.

JAVELINA NATION LOST one of its all-time greats last weekwith the passing of Andy Hawkins.

Andy was on the Javelina teams in 1976-79 and was a three-time All-America first team honoree.

He also received numerous other accolades. He was the LoneStar Conference defensive player of the year, was All-LSC on thefield and academically, he was selected by his teammates as acaptain and was the outstanding defensive player in the 1979national semifinal and quarterfinal games.

Hawkins has been inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame threetimes…as an individual in 1991 and as a member of the 1976 and1979 national championship teams.

But with all the honors, Andy is best remembered as a greatperson. Humble and one who didn’t seek the spotlight, he is one ofthe best to ever don a Javelina uniform.

Brothers Mike and Tim were also Javelina football players.Bobby Oakley, who was a student trainer for the Javelinas,

wrote a nice tribute after Andy’s funeral Saturday. Here is his email:“I attended Andy’s funeral today in Bay City and it was one of

the most incredible experiences of my life.“Andy was a ‘man of men’ and someone I respected very

much from the day I met him in 1977. He was a man of class, character and commitment. He treated everyone with respect andhumility.

“As I sat in the church surrounded by Steve Fefer, DavidMims, Randy Friedrich, Mike Sheffield, Larry Hirt, David Palmore,Jafus White, Henry Pullam, Clifford Burrow, George Franklin and,of course, Mike and Tim Hawkins,I realized that these guys werejust like Andy…class, character and commitment. Guys like thiswere the reason we won national championships.

“I realized what an honor it was for me to work with WillieGipson and participate in taking care of all of the players at TexasA&I and just how special all of them were.

“Andy’s funeral was incredible. His daughter plays softball atthe University of Alabama. The girls and coach of that team loadedup two vans and drove to the funeral.

“City Council people, football officials, coworkers, high schoolclassmates, teammates, and friends all packed the church in anoutpouring of love that I have never before experienced. The loveand respect that Andy brought out in people was a marvel to behold.

“Besides working together at A&I, Andy and I sharedsomething else. We shared the same heart doctors at St. LukesHospital Heart Failure institute. We saw each other there often andno matter how bad Andy felt, he was always more concerned withlifting my spirits than worrying about himself. We both had thesame type of cardiomyopathy and Andy actually advised me onwhat to do and what not to do as if he was teaching a younglinebacker.
