There’s a culture. It’s about experimentation and failing as often as you succeed. It’s a lifestyle more than a hobby, where you consume what you create and contribute to a community, even when it includes your competitors. It’s about love of the craft. Homebrewers and hackers share more than just an affinity for free beer and a collection of ironic t-shirts. Both have built supportive communities and a culture of open source: the tech world thriving on incubators, venture capital, and hack-a-thons and the beer world on homebrew competitions, recipe forums, and tasting rooms. We’ll look at the parallels between beer and code, from weekend homebrewer and amateur hacker, to craft brewery and startup, to the juggernauts of big beer and big tech, focusing on what homebrewers and hackers can learn from each other, how companies can grow without losing what made us root for them in the first place, and why cultivating a “culture of better” will nurture both industries. For homebrewers who consider themselves physical hackers and hackers who generously support the craft beer industry through their never ending bar tabs. DIYers searching for ways to make their maker-communities even better.
