1 History of Department Department of Community Medicine was established in the year 1988, with the Goal “To
communicate knowledge on the causes and prevention of disease in the population, on the
promotion of health, understanding of primary health care, on the optimal delivery of
health services for undergraduate students and to promote postgraduate studies and
research.”
Over the years the objectives have expanded to provide community based health care
services and conduct community health research.
2 Vision To be in the forefront of professional education, service and research in Community
Medicine and related disciplines in the country.
3 Mission 1. To improve the health of the communities we serve through education, service,
research, outreach and creative partnership.
2. Prepare basic health care physicians, public health professionals and researchers
through the undergraduate, masters and doctoral programmes.
3. Enhance the knowledge and skills of the public health workforce through continuing
education and technical assistance.
4 Objectives 1. To impart knowledge about a multifactorial understanding of Health and Diseases
among the students through community interaction.
2. To investigate epidemic and endemic diseases in the community by the application of
principles and methods in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
3. To assess the Health needs of various groups in the community and participate in
planning, implementation & monitoring of appropriate health care services.
4. To partner with government & other agencies in the health care delivery & training of
health man power.

Health Centre’s
The rural health centre (RHTC) at
Devarayasamudra, Mulbagal taluk, is located
around 18 kms from SDUMC. The centre provides
community based health care services for a
population of around 11,000.
The urban health centre (UHTC) Kolar city is
around 5 kms from SDUMC. The centre provides
community based health care services to the urban
slums of Shahinshanagar, NB Dargah and
Gandhinagar. Both the health training centres are
well equipped and staffed to provide training and
health care services.
