Fostering a community of philanthropy, for good, forever.

Dear Friends of the Foundation,

Thank you to our generous donors and contributors whose support means so much to the growth, enhancement, and wellbeing of the communities served by Michigan Gateway Community Foundation.

Thanks to a caring community, we had excellent financial support from 313 individuals, businesses, and organizations totaling $1,195,521.

We are proud of our support to the communities we serve. Significant among our grant activity was a partnership with Lakeland Health System to recruit a primary care physician to replace two retiring doctors in Buchanan. In Niles, we supported the very effective Summer My Way program and initiated a second round of support for the YMCA as they make plans to expand their facility to better serve the residents of the area. In Cass County, we help teach ALL second graders basic water safety skills, working with the YMCA, and we marked our second year as fiduciary for a $1.4 million groundwater study project, partnering with local growers and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

In these pages you will find many more grants listed, all examples of the breadth of support across our entire service area. Due to our giving friends, we made charitable grants to address the needs, interests and opportunities of the communities we serve, distributing $410,350 in grant support and scholarships.

With our strong community support we continue to grow and serve, holding 135 endowed and non-endowed funds from which we grant to make our communities better places to live, raise families and work.

On behalf of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and our area Boards from Buchanan, Niles, and Cass County, it is my distinct pleasure to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU for your continued support. Together we are fostering a community of philanthropy, for good, forever.

5 Michigan Gateway Community Foundation | 2017-2018 Annual Report 102017-2018 Annual Report | Michigan Gateway Community Foundation

Dear Friends of the Foundation,

Last year, we documented in this space the story of the most significant endeavor by

Michigan Gateway Community Foundation, The Buchanan Promise. Having implemented what we feel will impact the Foundation and the Buchanan Schools for generations, we have embarked upon a parallel path, and have implemented the Promise’s Children’s Savings Account, called Kickstart To Career.

Kickstart to Career is an automatic, universal savings account established by the Foundation for every kindergarten student beginning their time at Buchanan Community Schools. The goals of the program are to provide an early start to saving for a postsecondary education experience, to generate a habit of

savings for the future, to assist families with financial planning goals through education and information, and to create an expectation in our students of a postsecondary experience leading to a successful and happy career.

This program begins with our new students, the graduating class of 2031. We couldn’t do these great things without our outstanding Promise volunteers.

O ften, caring people remember Michigan Gateway Community Foundation in their wills, but are not recognized for their gifts to their favorite charitable cause until they pass away. The Legacy Society was created to acknowledge people who have made a bequest and give their permission to the Foundation to use their names to encourage others to act charitably

during their lifetimes.

Building on the foresight of our founding members, these people have made endowment gifts totaling more than $10,000, or have notified the Foundation of a planned gift through their estate, or via a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust, or similar planned gift vehicle.

Thank you for including Michigan Gateway Community Foundation in your charitable gift plan!
