April is Youth Savings Month! April is Youth Savings month and Georgia Heritage FCU wants to help your kids own their future! Studies show financial account experience and education at an early age can shape a young person’s habits for a lifetime. Early financial literacy can:

• Teach financial responsibility - A savings account gives kids some control over their money and encourages them to save rather than spend.

• Make saving a habit - Teaching kids the 10% rule early, will help them save and put money back even when they have bills to pay.

• Teach debt management - Debt interest costs the average U.S. household more than $6,000 a year. A savings account can teach kids to save for items they need and will hopefully keep them out of debt when they’re older.

• Start a conversation - Talk to your kids about the importance of saving and how you’re saving money for retirement, their college, etc.

Youth Savings Month is the perfect time to start teaching the importance of savings. Open your child’s first savings account at Georgia Heritage this month and put them on a path to owning their financial future!

Are you selling your home in 2019?Are you looking to sell your home in 2019? You might want to get started! Experts say sellers aren’t going to see the big pricing increases on homes and the selling process may take longer this year. Here are 4 things to keep in mind if you’re looking to sell:

1. Set the right asking price – There will be more inventory on the market for buyers this year, so make sure to appropriately price your home. Research what buyers are paying for similar homes in your area and use that data to set the price.

2. Get started now –Buyers are jumping into the market early, so listing your home as quickly as possible could benefit your sale.

3. Hire an inspector – Waiting for a buyer to get an inspection with a purchase agreement could delay your sale if they find issues. Hire an inspector yourself before listing your home. Then you can either decide whether to fix any noted problems or account for the repairs in the asking price.

4. Stage your home for online appeal - Ensure your home looks move-in ready to attract more eyes online where buyers look first. Make sure your home is clean, uncluttered and free of your personal items.

Tax deadline day is hereTax deadline day is right around the corner – Are you ready? If you’ve yet to file your taxes, heed these last-minute survival tips:

• Make sure you have all your documents collected including your W-2 from your employer, 1099-MISC from any company you worked for as a contractor, 1098 showing any mortgage interest and property taxes paid, 1098-E showing student loan interest paid, 1095 showing health insurance coverage, charitable contribution receipts and more.

• Once you have your documents, try completing your taxes online. The process can walk you through the forms you need and pinpoint what deductions you’re eligible for.

• Consider making an IRA contribution. You have up to the filing deadline, and your IRA contribution may be tax deductible.

• File today! You could accrue penalties and interest on any money you owe the government past April 15th.

• If you can’t meet the deadline, request an automatic six-month tax extension from the IRS with Form 4868.

For more information on filing your taxes, visit www.irs.gov.

Tips to paying off your credit card debtAccording to a recent study on U.S. households conducted by NerdWallet, credit card balances carried from month to month reached $420.22 billion by late 2018, a 5% increase from the previous year. The average U.S. household today with credit card debt has an estimated $6,929 in revolving balances. If you’re carrying more credit card debt than you’d like, follow these tips to seek relief.

1. Tackle high interest first - Pay at least the minimum on all your cards to avoid penalties and fees, but really focus on paying down the high interest card first. Once that card is settled, focus on the next highest interest rate card and so on.

2. Debt Consolidation - Consolidate your existing debt into an unsecured personal loan from the credit union, repayable in 3-5 years and often at a much lower interest rate than your credit card.

GHFCU Donates More Than 50 Stuffed Animals to Teddy Bear ClinicGHFCU recently donated more than 50 stuffed animals to children who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to participate in an interactive learning experience called Teddy Bear Clinic. Led by Mercer University School of Medicine students, the Clinic was the highlight of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System’s 10th annual Student Success Expo & STEM Festival, which attracted about 15,000 participants.

Many children who joined the Teddy Bear Clinic used stuffed animals they’d brought from home or those donated from the credit union as “patients.” They learned to assess the health of their plush patients and to treat several medical issues proposed by the instructors.

“Our mission statement is ‘making a positive difference for our members and the communities we serve,’” said GHFCU President and CEO Dale Taratuta. “It was important to us to ensure all children had the opportunity to participate in an event that educates them about their health.”

Registration Open for Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union’s Millennials and Their Money Forum Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union is inviting young adults to register for its upcoming Millennials and their Money forum, an educational discussion on pertinent financial topics.

“The Millennial generation has grown up. The oldest members are now 38 years old and the youngest are turning 23 this year,” said Danae English, director of the Accounting, Finance and Payment Services Department at Georgia Heritage FCU. “These are ages when consumers typically make important financial decisions that can greatly impact the rest of their lives. As a Millennial myself, I know how confusing some of these financial decisions can be.”

English and a panel of other young professionals at Georgia Heritage will work with the credit union’s marketing department to host Millennials and Their Money at Georgia Heritage’s Pooler location on May 2 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The event will begin with refreshments and networking, followed by the credit union’s Millennial panel.

The discussion will feature topics including:• How to build credit while spending money• How to budget• Home ownership• The importance of saving• Preparing for retirement• The mystery of taxes

“The first step to affording life is figuring out what that entails,” said Dale Taratuta, president and CEO of Georgia Heritage FCU. “At Georgia Heritage, we’re committed to providing guidance to our members through all stages of their financial lives. This program is just one more tool we can use to steer our members and our community toward solid financial literacy.”

The credit union’s Pooler branch is located at 102 Park Avenue in Pooler. To register, visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/special-event-millennials-and-their-money-tickets-58865366897.

GHFCU Sponsors 5th Annual Hearts for Heroes Red Tie GalaGHFCU proudly sponsored the 5th Annual Hearts for Heroes Red Tie Gala, benefiting the families of fallen police and fire personnel on February 16th at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. The event benefited the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire which provides immediate and life-long monetary assistance to the families of emergency personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty.

“Our first responders risk their lives to help our community when there’s a crisis,” said GHFCU CEO and President Dale Taratuta. “We were honored to do our part to help the families of these local heroes in their time of crisis. We couldn’t pass up an opportunity to show our appreciation.”
