MESSAGE FROM WHL COMMISSIONER RON ROBISONFrom humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey League has experienced over the last 50 years.

The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every category.

As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches, man-agers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broad-casters and media from throughout the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world class experience they deserve.

Seattle Thunderbirds at Tri-City Americans Friday, March 18

T-Birds Clinch US Division… The T-Birds clinched the U.S. Division title on Tuesday with a 4-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs at ShoWare Center. The T-Birds have a 43-23-3-0 record.

First Round of Playoffs…The T-Birds will open the playoffs at ShoWare Center on Friday, March 25, at 7:35pm against an opponent to be determined. Game 2 of the best-of-seven first round series will be Saturday, March 26, at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center. The full first round schedule will be released once an opponent is determined.

Winning Ways…The T-Birds have won 11 consecutive games and 15 of their last 16 games. They have outscored their opponents 59-27 in those 16 games. They have also won 17 of their last 21 games. The T-Birds have won five consecutive games on the road.

T-Birds’ Additions…Defenseman Jared Pelechaty, right wing Luke Ormsby and center Elijah Brown have been added to the T-Birds roster. Pelechaty was signed by the T-Birds on February 2. He has appeared in six games this season and has one goal. Pelechaty played in the T-Birds U.S. Division title clinching win on March 15. Pelechaty has played 39 games this season with the Neepawa Natives in the MJHL and has two goals and five assists for seven points. Ormsby was signed by the T-Birds on December 4. Ormsby has played in three games this season and has one assist. Ormsby played the majority of this season with the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes where he had 14 goals and six assists in 32 games. Brown was signed by the T-Birds on June 22. Brown was the T-Birds first round selection, 15th overall, in the 2015 Bantam Draft. This season Brown played for the SSAC Midget team in Edmonton. He has 15 goals and 28 assists for 43 points in 32 games with the SSAC Midget team.

Bow with the Birds…Since being acquired from the Swift Current Broncos goalie Landon Bow has a 15-6-0-0 record in 22 games with a .939 save percentage, 1.71 goals against average and five shutouts. Overall this season Bow is 24-20-4-0 with a 2.49 goals against average, .923 save percentage and seven shutouts. Bow leads the WHL in shutouts with seven, one ahead of Carter Hart of Everett. Bow is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending March 13.

Streaking Birds…Scott Eansor has a two-game point streak with a goal and four assists in the last two games… Donovan Neuls has a two-game point streak with a goal and three assists in the last two games…Nolan Volcan has a two-game point streak with a goal and two assists in the last two games.

Barzal’s Dishing The Puck…Mathew Barzal had a season high 5 assists against Brandon on October 27. This is the most assists in a game by a T-Bird this season. He also had a season high five points (3g-2a) March 1 against Tri-City. Barzal had a team high 13-game point streak snapped in the win over Tri-City on March 6. He has 12 goals and 17 assists in the last 17 games. Barzal has 86 points on 26 goals and 60 assists in 57 games which puts him in 10th in the league in scoring.

Gropp Going…Left wing Ryan Gropp has 10 goals and 12 assists in the last 17 games and 16 goals and 21 assists in the last 31 games. Gropp is tied for 25th in the league in scoring. His 33 goals and 36 assists this season is a career high in goals, assists and points. Last season Gropp had 30 goals and 28 assists for 58 points.

Kolesar’s Clicking…Kolesar has 30 goals and 30 assists for 60 points to put him second on the team in goals scored. Kolesar has 11 goals and six assists in the last 19 games. He has six multi-goal games this season. Kolesar has already passed his career total for points in season. Last year he had 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points in 64 games.

Bear Blasting…Defenseman Ethan Bear has 18 goals and 43 assists for 61 points. Bear is sixth in the WHL in scoring by defensemen. He is 11 points behind league leader Ivan Provorov of Brandon. Bear has 14 goals and 22 assists in his last 41 games. He has passed his season high for points, which was 38 last season on 13 goals and 25 assists.

Logan Lately…Goalie Logan Flodell has is 7-2-0-0 in his last nine starts with two shutouts. Overall he is 21-13-3-0 with three shutouts and a .901 save percentage and a 2.75 goals against average.

Penalty Kill Prowess…The T-Birds are first in the league on the penalty kill. The T-Birds have allowed 42 goals on 284 chances for an 85.2% success rate. The Victoria Royals have allowed 37 goals on 249 chances for an 85.1% mark. The T-Birds have scored six shorthanded goals total this season.

Powering Up…The T-Birds have the fourth best power play in the WHL with a 23% conversion rate. The T-Birds have scored 65 power-play goals on 283 opportunities. The Lethbridge Hurricanes are first on the power play with a 28.5% conversion rate.

Shutout Situation…The T-Birds registered four shutouts in January. Landon Bow had three shutouts and Logan Flodell had one shutout in January. Bow had the first shutout of the season on January 13 in Prince George when he stopped 28 shots in a 4-0 win. Bow had back-to-back shutouts on January 19 against the Saskatoon Blades in a 4-0 win and 30 saves January 22 against Portland in a 3-0 win. Logan Flodell had 23 saves the Kelowna Rockets on January 31 in a 2-0 win. The T-Birds had two shutouts in February. Flodell made 31 saves February 9 at ShoWare Center in a 6-0 blanking of the Rockets for the team’s fifth shutout this season. Bow made 24 saves in a 2-0 win over the Silvertips on February 27 at ShoWare Center. In March Flodell shut out the Tri-City Americans on March 6 with 17 saves in a 4-0 win. Bow made 21 saves to shutout the Silvertips on March 11 at ShoWare Center in a 1-0 win.

Two T-Birds Named To NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings…Defenseman Turner Ottenbreit and left wing Nolan Volcan have been listed on the NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings for the 2016 NHL Draft. The Midterm Rankings were released on Tuesday, January 19. Ottenbreit is ranked number 169 and Volcan is ranked number 206. Ottenbreit has three goals and nine assists for 12 points in 43 games this season. Ottenbreit has 56 penalty minutes. Volcan has 10 goals and six assists for 16 points in 30 games. Volcan has 17 penalty minutes.

Results Breakdown…The T-Birds are 28-5-2-0 at home this season. They are 15-18-1-0 on the road so far this season. Overall, the T-Birds were 9-1-1-0 in October, 7-5-1-0 in November, 4-6-1-0 in December, 7-6-0-0 in January and 9-4-0-0 in February. They are 7-0-0-0 in March so far.

Barzal Hits 60…Mathew Barzal registered his 60th assist Friday against Everett. Barzal is the first T-Birds to have 60 assists in a season since Patrick Marleau had 74 assists in the 1996-97 season.

Double Hat Tricks…Mathew Barzal and Ryan Gropp each had a hat trick March 1 against Tri-City at ShoWare Center. According to @TbirdsTidbits, the last time two T-Birds had a hat trick in a game was February 28, 2003, when Greg Black (3g-1a) and Thomas Mojzis (3g-1a) each had three goals at the Tri-City Americans. The last time there were two hat tricks in Seattle was on December 28, 1996, when Kris Cantu and Torrey DiRoberto each had three goals against the Kelowna Rockets in an 11-2 win.

Hat Tricks This Season…The T-Birds have seven hat tricks this season. Mathew Barzal, Ryan Gropp and Keegan Kolesar each have two hat tricks. Ethan Bear has one hat trick.

Overtime Results…The T-Birds have had seven games decided in overtime this season and are 4-3 in those games. The Tri-City Americans defeated the T-Birds 6-5 on October 3 in Kennewick. The T-Birds beat the Kamloops Blazes 4-3 in overtime in Kamloops on November 20 on a Keegan Kolesar goal. The Moose Jaw Warriors defeated the T-Birds 3-2 in overtime on November 28 at ShoWare Center. The Americans beat the T-Birds 3-2 in overtime December 18 at ShoWare Center. The T-Birds beat the Everett Silvertips 3-2 in overtime on January 9 at ShoWare Center when Mathew Barzal scored 35 seconds into overtime. The T-Birds beat the Portland Winterhawks in overtime on February 13 at ShoWare Center when Scott Eansor scored with one second left in overtime. Ethan Bear scored the overtime winner 14 seconds into the extra frame for a 2-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs on February 19 at ShoWare Center.

Shootout Results…The T-Birds have had two game this season go to a shootout. They beat the Prince Albert Raiders 3-2 October 10 at ShoWare Center. Tied at 2-2, Mathew Barzal, Jamal Watson and Keegan Kolesar converted in the shootout. Taz Burman stopped one of two Prince Albert shooters. The T-Birds beat the Everett Silvertips 2-1 in a seven round shootout at Xfinity Arena on March 4. Nolan Volcan was the only T-Bird to score in the shootout. Landon Bow stopped all seven Everett shooters. The T-Birds were 7-5 in shootouts last season.

Hauf Hits 300 Games Played…Defenseman Jared Hauf has played 340 games as a T-Bird to put him in 3rd all-time games played by a T-Bird. If Hauf were to play all three regular season games remaining on the schedule he would end
