$1,000 ScholarShipApplications for the 2017 Richard E. Fogleman Memorial Scholarship are due by Friday, June 2. All HFCU members pursuing a post-secondary education are eligible to apply for the annual $1,000 scholarship.

Applicants are judged on their scholastic and extracurricular activities as well as a 300-word essay.

Seminar on“The Return of Conservative Investing”

HFCU held an informational seminar for members in cooperation with Member and Investment Services at AACA Museum in Hershey on Tuesday, March 28.

Travis Stanley (speaker) discussed how conservative investments can help you face today’s economic risks; the differences between CDs and annuities, and the advantages of each; and how to decide whether a return to conservative investing can help set your financial direction.

This month’s security article is inspired by the five scam related phone calls I received in one day. One day! Like most of you, if I do not know the number or if it is an out of state call, I do not answer. But, let’s face it – we are all amazed at the number of phone calls we receive on either a daily or weekly basis that are fraud related.

Helpful Tips from the Experts:Have you received a call from someone claiming to work for Microsoft stating you have a virus on your home computer?

According to Microsoft’s website: “Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support. Any communication we have with you must be initiated by you.”

The IRS warns about phone scams stating that: “Taxpayers should remember their first contact with the IRS will not be a call from out of the blue, but through official correspondence sent through the mail. A big red flag for these scams are angry, threatening calls from people who say they are from the IRS and urging im-mediate payment. This is not how we operate.”

You have received a check in the mail with instructions to deposit it into your account. The FTC states that “when you do, they’ll ask you to wire a portion of the money back. The check will turn out to be a fake, and you will owe the credit union/bank any money you withdrew.”

Your notice of prize winnings was mailed via bulk rate postage. The FTC explained that “it’s not likely you’ve won a big prize if your notification was mailed by bulk rate. Do you even remember entering a contest? If not, odds are you didn’t and it’s all a big scam.”

So what should you do? Be wary of “free money” – You don’t pay for “prize money.”Don’t rely on Caller ID – Fraudsters can “spoof” legit company’s phone numbers.If you receive a check (free prize, sweepstake, mystery shopper, etc.) in the mail with instructions to send a wire, money order, or prepaid card back, report it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at https://postalinspec-tors.uspis.gov/.You won a free cruise – Do your due diligence. Never commit to charges or deposits without researching the prize/offer. Note: there are some legitimate free travel prizes, so investigate before divulging any personal information.
