Coronavirus (COVID-19)

What Is the Coronavirus (COVID-19)?At the end of 2019, a new type of coronavirus began making people sick with flu-like symptoms. The illness is calledcoronavirus disease-19 — COVID-19 for short. The first cases were diagnosed in people who had visited a market inChina that sold live seafood and animals. The virus spreads easily and has now affected people in many countries.

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID-19)?COVID-19 causes a fever, cough, and trouble breathing. Symptoms are a bit like those people have with a cold or theflu. The virus can be more serious in some people, and may lead to illnesses like pneumonia.

How Does Coronavirus (COVID-19) Spread?Experts are still investigating how COVID-19 spreads. In general, coronaviruses spread through droplets sent into theair when people cough or sneeze. The virus can spread in communities from one person to another, and throughcontact with surfaces that have germs on them.

Is the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Dangerous to Children?Experts are still learning about COVID-19, so we don't have a lot of information about it yet. There are far fewercases of the virus reported in children. Most of them caught the infection from someone they lived with or a familymember. The virus seems to cause a milder infection in children than in adults or older people.

Call your doctor if your child or someone in your family has a fever, cough, or other flu-like symptoms. Tell the doctorif they have been near someone with COVID-19 or lived in or traveled to an area where lots of people have thecoronavirus.

Make sure your children have all their vaccinations. Protect them against illnesses like measles and the flu. This helpskeep them out of the doctor's office or hospital where they could be around other germs, including the coronavirus.Plus, kids who have another infection may have a harder time getting better if they do get the coronavirus. It's nottoo late to get a flu shot!

How Is Coronavirus (COVID-19) Treated? Most people with COVID-19, including children, do not have serious problems. They usually get better with rest andfluids. But it is important to keep kids with COVID-19 away from others who may have a harder time with the virus.

People who are very ill get care in a hospital with breathing help, IV fluids, and other treatments.

How Can I Protect Myself From Coronavirus (COVID-19)?The best ways to protect yourself and your family are:

Keep your family home and away from others as much as possible.

Avoid people who are sick. COVID-19 may be contagious before a person has any symptoms. So avoid largegatherings and busy places until the outbreak is under control.

Try to stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) away from other people.

Wash your hands well and often. Wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use hand sanitizer withat least 60% alcohol. Teach your kids to do the same.

Try not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Use a household cleaner or wipe to clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that people touch a lot.

Follow recommendations from your local health authority, especially if there are people with coronavirus inyour area.

Antibiotics can't treat viruses so they won't help with the coronavirus. Medicines for the flu don't work either becausethe coronavirus is different from the flu virus.

“...I know how tough it is some days to look with hope and confidence on themonths and years ahead. But, I would like to tell you what I often told youwhen you were much younger: “I like you just the way you are.” And what’smore, I am so grateful to you for helping the children in your life to know thatyou’ll do everything you can to keep them safe, and to help them express theirfeelings in ways that will bring healing in many different neighborhoods.”

- Fred Rogers

With the continuing news about the coronavirus (COVID-19), we know schools,

families, and communities are being extra cautious about the spread of germs and are preparing to protect each other. Children are certainly hearing about the coronavirus

and may have feelings and questions that you can help them with.

Here are some ideas for how to talk to children about the coronavirus:

• Help your child know that you and the adults in their life are protecting them,

and that doctors and nurses and scientists are taking care of people who are sick and working to find ways to keep everyone safe. While children need to know it

is not their job to stop or fix the virus, you can empower them to be a helper by washing their hands often and covering their nose and mouth if they cough or

sneeze.

• Be mindful of what your children hear and see on the news, and try to limit how much they see and hear. As reports continue to grow, it is important that

children know that no one person, or group of people, is responsible for people being sick.

• Let your child know they can always come to you with questions. If you don’t know the answer to a question, it is okay to tell your child “I wonder about that, too” or let them know you will come back to them if you have an answer later.

• Ask your child what they have heard about the coronavirus. They may have heard more than you realize, or heard misinformation. Asking them what they

know, rather than assuming, will give you the chance to meet them where they are in your conversations.

• Let your child know that their feelings are always safe with you, whether they

are feeling worried, angry, sad, or anything at all.

HOW TO PLAYDOUGH Clay Ingredients:

• 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 3/4 cup salt

• 4 teaspoons tartar cream

• 2 cups warm water

• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (coconut oil also works)

• Food coloring, optional

• One-gallon bags

Add flour, salt and tartar cream in a large saucepan. Then add the water and oil. If

you are just making a color, add the color now as well. Cook over medium heat,

stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begin to

form a ball. Remove from heat and then place inside a gallon bag or waxed paper.

Allow to cool a little, then knead until smooth. If you add colors later, divide the

dough into balls (for the number of colors you want) and then add the dough to

the one-quarter-size bags. Start with approximately 5 drops of color and add

more to lighten it. Knead the dough into the bag so as not to stain your hands.

Once everything is mixed, you'll be ready to play.

Cocine a fuego medio, revolviendo constantemente.
