Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus ----------------------------------------------------------------
Last week it was noted that one of the most common
questions Rotarians receive is ‘What does Rotary do ?’
To answer that question one framework that has been
suggested is to look a the six areas of focus that Rotary
has. This week, we will look at the first two –
Peace and Conflict Prevention / Resolution
Forty-two million people are displaced by armed conflict
or persecution, and 90 percent of armed-conflict
casualties are civilians, half of them children. Through
service projects, fellowships, and other Rotary-sponsored
campaigns, members train adults and young leaders to
prevent and mediate conflict, and aid refugees who have
fled dangerous areas. Members also pursue projects to
address the underlying structural causes of conflict,
including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of
access to education, and unequal distribution of
resources.
Fighting Disease
More than 100 million people are pushed into poverty
each year because of medical costs. We aim to improve
and expand access to low-cost and free health care in
underdeveloped areas. Our members educate and
mobilize communities to help prevent the spread of major
diseases such as polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. Many of
our projects ensure that medical training facilities are
located where the workforce lives.
More to come next week ...
Keith’s Soap Box --------------------------------------------------------- The weeks continue to tick over
quickly as we are now in winter
and ready for a themed Change
over dinner and see a new and
vibrant President – that’s you
Clinton.
At last your band aid President will be relegated to
general duties and he (me) is looking forward to
seeing new and younger members full of vibrance
and enthusiasm just like we observed last week
with the teenagers from Coomera Anglican
College.
With a minimum of speeches and a multitude of
good ideas, entertainment and excellent food we
want your friends and colleagues to join and really
enjoy themselves. Eighty is a good number.
See you on Wednesday
Keith
Last Week’s Meeting --------------------------------------------------------- Youth was definitely the focus of the week as we
heard from a number of youthful speakers on a
variety of topics.
Firstly, we heard from Emma Hurley who is
applying for the National Youth Science Forum
(NYSF) in Canberra next January.
We also heard from the Coomera Anglican College
Interact Club with Amy Stuart and Tayla Painter
giving us an update on their wonderful work,
including raising over $2k for Nepal.
Well done to all the students, teachers, parents
and friends of the Interact Students for their
wonderful fundraising.
Finally, we also got to hear from Grant Sampson
who provided us with a summary of the time he
spent at a recent RYPEN camp (sponsored by our
club). As with most participants, he came out of
the camp full of enthusiasm and praise for the
program.
All members should be seriously considering
friends and family when nominations for any of the
Rotary sponsored Youth programs are made –
they truly can be life changing. Feel free to ask
our Youth Director, Max Williams if you have any
questions on what is available and when.
For Sale --------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Books
These are great value and not only provide you
with plenty of discounts with local retailers but
each sale returns $11 to our club ! Please see
Amy for more details and to order.
Changeover Dinner ---------------------------------------------------------All members should have received a flyer for our
Changeover Dinner on 26 June (also attached).
Please make sure to book early but no later than
next Friday (19 June).

São Paulo welcomes Rotary ---------------------------------------------------------
South America's largest city, São Paulo, Brazil, is
playing host to Rotary's largest event of the year,
the annual convention. More than 14,000 Rotary
members from over 100 countries have come
together to celebrate service, exchange ideas, and
relax among friends at unforgettable concerts and
social events.
Attendees are hearing from renowned experts in
the areas of peace, education, economic
development, and health.
Rotary Peace Symposium
At the fourth Rotary Peace Symposium, Partnering
for Peace: Today's Challenges -- Tomorrow's
Successes, 4-5 June, distinguished speakers are
sharing their insights on how to advance peace,
goodwill, and understanding.
The June 4 keynote speaker is Dr. Oscar Arias,
former president of Costa Rica, who received the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his plan to end the
civil wars plaguing Central America.
World Water Summit
The Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group is
hosting its annual World Water Summit 4-5 June,
focusing on investing in water, sanitation, and
hygiene education in schools. The event will host a
somewhat unconventional guest speaker: Raya,
one of the newest Muppets from Sesame
Workshop, who teaches children about water and
sanitation.
Convention speakers
São Paulo dignitaries who will welcome attendees
at the convention's opening plenary session on 6
June include Governor Geraldo Alckmin and Mayor
Fernando Haddad.
Speakers during the convention, 6-9 June, include:
• Luis Alberto Moreno, former Colombian
ambassador to the United States and current
president of the Inter-American Development
Bank
• Beth Murphy, director, producer, and writer of
feature documentaries , including "Beyond
Belief" and "What Tomorrow Brings," about
important social issues.
• Stephen Killelea, founder and executive chair
of Integrated Research Ltd., The Charitable
Foundation, and the Institute for Economics
and Peace.

Eradication Initiative at the World Health
Organization
Workshops on topics ranging from food security to
peace and conflict resolution will give Rotary
members the opportunity to learn from experts in

enriched with the knowledge, motivation, and
inspiration to create positive change in their
communities.
