Ascot Place Grotto.
This is a photographic record of the restoration carried out during 2010 of thelantern glazing to the extraordinary grotto at Ascot Place, Berkshire; built by Josiahlane in about 1750.The project was carried out as part of the wider conservation/restoration of thegrotto by Cliveden Conservation.
The windows are of the typical 18thCentury type formed of cast lead glazing bars, the glazing rebate formed of tinned copper sections. An entire window was missing, and was replicated by taking an impression fromthe original cast leqd sections. Flat and circular sections were then reproduced byscoring plaster moulds with a profile tool.
