There are many things in life that call forth mixed feelings from us. At the same time, we both want to do something and, yet are a bit reluctant to start out on that new road. For instance, starting a different job or going to a new school can bring forth feelings of newness and even excitement, and, at the same time, there can be some fear about our ability to do that job, or to fit into that new school. We have mixed feeling about it all.

It is not unusual to have that same kind of experience as we begin another Lenten season. We know that this is the time of the year when we are asked to look closely at our lives for the purpose of renewing ourselves. When we think of Lent, we probably think of change – change for the better. Today, Jesus calls us to repent and believe the good news. Lent is another word for springtime – a time of new growth – new life. And even though we usually want to change, we fear how difficult it may be.

We as a parish also are ask to look at ourselves closely for the need of change for the better, time of new growth. Are we generous enough to embrace with love, those who mainly speak Spanish? Are we willing to welcome them fully as brothers and sisters? Are we willing to celebrate and worship our Lord with them on Sunday Mass in Spanish?

Nature doesn’t seem to worry about how to achieve this new growth. It just seems to happen. But with humans, it’s quite different. We have to be consciously involved in the change. It won’t just happen on its own. Wouldn’t that be great if it could? Wouldn’t it be a wonderful if we could just sit back and wait for Lent to come each year, knowing that we would be automatically renewed? But since that is not the case, how are we to go about this spiritual renewal of ourselves?

Well there is a tried and tested method – one that has been used for a couple of thousand years. It’s called prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These three conditions of renewal are still as valid today as they were centuries ago.

Prayer leads to an awareness of where we need to change. This awareness then calls for a putting away of negative elements in our behavior [we call that fasting]. This in turn calls forth a new way of relating to others which is concretely expressed in almsgiving.

Well, you gotta love the Texas weather! Just a quick note of thanks to the CFF catechists who braved the wintry elements and made it in to class! Some of you even pulled double-duty and

taught both sessions due to all the absences. Great job for pulling together! Parents, thanks for calling in to receive updated information regarding openings/closures. AND here’s why it’s really important we have your most current phone number on file! Please be sure to check with our office and/or your child’s catechist to verify your phone #.

Kindergarten Mornings with Mom & Dad are this Sunday, February 18 in the dining room during your child’s normal Faith Formation time. Parents, plan on joining your child for another fun, faith-filled session but remember these sessions are NOT part of the sacramental preparation process. Also, Mornings with Mom & Dad are meant to give you and your child some quality one-on-one time, so please take advantage of our wonderful nursery for younger siblings. This allows all families attending to enjoy the session without disruption. PreK 4 Mornings with Mom & Dad are next Sunday, February 25.

The three week Theology of the Body (TOB) Mini-Series for Grades 4-6 begins THIS Sunday, February 18 and continues through Sunday, March 4. If you DO NOT wish for your child to attend the mini-series, we must have that in writing and on file in the Office of Faith Formation or they will result in unexcused absences. There are no alternate/make-up classes for these three weeks; however, you will be given work to be completed at home with your child. For children in sacramental preparation, this is especially important. Additionally, no guests are allowed unless we have written permission from the parents. Please feel free to contact the Faith Formation Office with any questions. Additionally, the Diocesan mandated “Child Safe Environment Training” (more commonly referred to as VIRTUS) will take place for Grades K-6 on Sunday, March 4. Parents wishing to opt their children out of this Safety Training MUST complete the required Opt Out Form available through the CFF Office by the 4th.

A tremendous thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed our MARDI GRAS CELEBRATION despite the crazy winter weather! I hope all of you who came and participated in all the craziness enjoyed it as much. Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus for the yummy pancake breakfast and to the Confirmation/First Communion families who helped with crafts, face painting, photo booth and kept the tables clean. You are some of the hardest working families I have had the pleasure of serving with…thank you, again! Also, a huge shout out to Lisa, Veronica, Cindy and the ever present Limones Family who helped get everything set-up and decorated for this event, as well as making sure everything was cleaned-up, put up and ready for a 1:30 Confirmation meeting. Whew! That’s alotta work...

Children’s Faith Formation will be working with Youth Ministry on the Kids Against Hunger campaign during Lent! Just toss your spare change into the designated “to-go container” in your child’s classroom to help us reach the 10,000 meals goal! Pizza party to the CFF class with the most donations! Well, it’s that time of year again, so start donating those plastic Easter eggs (large or small), individually wrapped Easter candy and/or small Easter treats for our Easter Egg Hunt to be held on Sunday, April 8 (not Easter Sunday) as part of the Children’s Faith Formation Program! The children will actually stuff the eggs in their Faith Formation class on Palm Sunday (March 25) so they have something to look forward to (the anticipation!) after Easter. In fact, we’ll have an egg stuffing station in the gym on Palm Sunday if you want to join the fun! Confirmation/First Communion families…if you’re looking for a service project, here you go! If you would like to help us out with donations, just drop them off at the Community Center front desk, attention Faith Formation. Please feel free to contact Deborah, ext. 14, with any questions. Catechists, our Lenten Retreat is scheduled for Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the dining room! Come and spend some time to rejuvenate both your spirit and your soul. Our own Lindee Greer will be facilitating. Childcare is available by contacting Sharon Bush at 972.298.9460. Cost of the retreat is $10.00 per person to cover the cost of breakfast/lunch. Please contact Deborah by Wednesday, March 21 to register.
