Annual Mission Appeal – Franciscan Friars to Visit Holy Rosary on July 14-15

Brother Dennis Moses will be coming to Holy Rosary Parish next weekend, July 14th and 15th to make an appeal for the Conventual Franciscan Friars missions in India, Central America and Zambia at all weekend Masses. Although a native Michigander, he made his solemn vows at St. Anthony in Lorain and taught school at SS. Cyril & Methodius in Lakewood. His grandparents came from Mugnano del Cardinale, the home Church of St. Philomena which is located about 20 miles southwest of Naples. So he is looking forward to a little taste of Italy while at the parish. Friar Andrew Hennessy, a young friar studying for the priesthood will be with him. For more information, please visit their website at www.franciscansusa.org.

Ushers and Greeters are NeededWe invite you to consider volunteering as an usher for the weekend Masses. Responsibilities include arriving early for Mass as scheduled and simply provide a warm and welcoming presence, as well as assist with the offertory collection and distribution of bulletins. If interested, please call Father Joe at (216) 421-2995.

We are grateful for your support of the parish’s only annual fund raiser.

Dear Parish Family,

“My grace is suffi cient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” In this line from his second letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul relates what our Lord tells him when he asks, actually begs, that his thorn in the fl esh be removed. The Lord does not take the thorn away; at least it does not appear so. Even this great apostle needs to learn from Jesus what is important – “My grace is suffi cient.” How true a statement, yet how diffi cult a reality to live.

We can only speculate on what Paul’s “thorn in the fl esh” happens to be for him, but the specifi cs really do not matter. What Paul learns is that taking a weakness away is not the answer. In fact, he needs the reminder that he accomplishes all the good work in his ministry through God’s grace, which itself is suffi cient. If the great St. Paul, apostle and pillar of the Church, had to deal with weaknesses, then certainly we are not immune.

The more we grow closer to the Lord and serve the Church as intentional disciples, the more thorns in the fl esh we are going to recognize. It is simply unavoidable. God likely is not going to take them away from us either. They help keep us humble through our realization that all we do depends on God’s grace.

What are our thorns? Each of us has them and we know them well. They constantly remind us of our own weakness, struggles and temptations. They likely could be those particular weaknesses we really want to get rid of in our lives but just cannot seem to do so. That does not mean we give up in trying to lessen or eliminate them altogether. It is, however, an invitation for us to deepen our humility – to realize that is all about God and not all about us. It is an invitation to acknowledge that God’s grace is stronger and more powerful than any human weakness we have. That grace operates and achieves God’s objective despite us, despite our weakness. Because only in that weakness is God’s power made perfect.

If we had no weaknesses, no thorns in the fl esh, we would be tempted, like St. Paul, to believe we achieved things on our own, without God. That manifests as pride. The more we realize it is all the grace of God working through us, the less those thorns in the fl esh will bother or distract us, even if they remain part of our lives.

Let us ask Mary, our Mother and model of humility who is full of grace, to assist us in accepting our weaknesses and struggles as a way to grow closer to her Son, Jesus, and to realize that His grace is suffi cient for us.

In Christ,Fr. Joe Previte

40 Hours of Adoration in Preparation for the Feast of the Assumption at Holy Rosary

We invite you to “save the date” and plan to commit to spending at least one hour in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament prior to the Feast. Adoration begins Thursday, August 9th following 7:00 a.m. Mass and continues until 11:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10th,

concluding with Benediction and Night Prayer. Please watch future bulletins for information.
