Hello all: Ministry is so important to our parish in all ways and for so many reasons. Just this last week I hired a few of the teens to help me with some packing. Several of our teens are attending a conference in July (which costs each one $400) where they will learn some leader-ship skills and techniques for our own parish youth program. They worked diligently for a few hours and seemed to be happy to help me. Since then I’ve been thinking about them and I realized that helping me helped them that day to get closer to attending the conference. But, the exciting part is that they will be attending the conference to learn how to MINISTER to others!!! No one is too young or too old to be a part of a ministry. We have high school students who are lectors at the 5:30 Mass on Sundays. At this same Mass we have teens and young adults who are the ushers and the greeters. We have altar servers who are fifth grade and older who serve Mass daily and on Sundays. We have 7th and 8th grade students from Holy Rosary School who are helpers in the CCD classrooms. We have children at the Hispanic Masses once a month who provide a playlet about the Gospel. We have many children who are involved in fundraising for different causes. This is the beginning of ministry for all of them! This is the future of our church! Now the challenge is back with us as adults. How do the children perceive us as we do ministry? Are we encourag-ing them to be the ministers of tomorrow? Some of our ministries can be family ministries where the young can be active as well. The one that immediately comes to mind is that of Greeters. There is nothing better than seeing a family at the church doors welcoming others to Mass. There is ministry outside of church where we can all help others. There was a young man in our Confirmation program several years ago who needed to do service hours. He couldn’t think of anything to do until one day he was driving down the street toward his home and he saw a garage door opened at this older lady’s home. Her garage was a mess!!! He thought about it for a bit and then went back to talk to her and offered to clean her garage as his Confirma-tion project. This started out as a requirement for Confirmation but turned into a year-round project which could easily be called a min-istry. He developed a relationship with this lady. He cleaned her garage on a regular basis. He took out her garbage cans weekly. He mowed her lawn and spent time with her. They talked about his life, her life and even how God was in the midst of their lives. He might not have realized it, but, cleaning that garage was the first step in a ministry where he helped an older person for no personal gain. This is what ministry is all about... doing the Lord’s work without per-sonal gain. Providing a service for someone who needs help. You don’t have to be in church to do a ministry. The best ministers find the needs and help to fulfill them. Let us teach the youth of our par-ish by our actions how important ministry is!!!! Our unsung hero this week is Alyssa Boushey. She fits the mold of a young person doing ministry without personal gain. She helps take care of her grandma. She volunteers with the Youth and Young Adult program. She helps others with chores. She personally has helped me. Alyssa knows ministry and she lives ministry. She is young but she is a great role model for those younger than her! Blessings, Jackie

A Message from Fr. Roberto

Parish theme for this year: Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

The Holy Trinity God for us, we call you Father. God alongside us, we call you Jesus. God within us, we call you Holy Spirit.

When we start with the Three, we know that this God is perfect giving and perfect receiving, that the very name of Being is communion, extravagant generosity, humble receptivity, and unhindered dialogue between Three.

Then we know God as the deepest flow of Life Itself, Relationship Itself.

It is not that a Being decides to love; love is the very nature and shape of Being.

– Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M.

In some ways, today’s feast of the Most Holy Trinity is a culmination of our Church’s liturgical year and our understand-ing of what God wants for us. So, at Advent and Christmas we celebrate “Emmanuel” (which means “God with us”) – a God who chose to be one of us human beings. At Lent and Easter, we cele-brate “God for us” – a God who chose to suffer and die for us. At Pente-cost we celebrate “God in us” – a God who chooses to dwell within us. And finally, on Trinity Sunday we celebrate “Us in God” – a God who invites and draws us into the very life of the Trinity.

Our belief that God is a Trinity – three distinct and equal per-sons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) yet only one God – is one of the major beliefs that makes us different from other religions such as Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Mormonism and Jehovah Witnesses. The word “Trinity” is a blend-ing of two words that ex-press our belief: “Tri” meaning three, and “Unity” meaning one; Tri+Unity = “Trinity.” This word “Trinity” is never men-tioned in the Bible – it came about in later centu-

ries – yet, in the gospels, Jesus speaks of himself as distinct from the Father and the Holy Spirit on numerous occasions. And when Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan River, three of the gospels (see Matthew 3:16-17, for example) describe the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as three distinct persons. Jesus tells his disciples to baptize others not just in his name or the Father’s name, but in the name of all three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).

In addition, the New Testament speaks of each person of the Trinity as God – the Father is God (Philippians 1:2); Jesus is God (Titus 2:13); and the Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4). However, they are not three separate Gods but only one God; Scripture is very clear that there is only one God (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 46:9). In fact, one of the reasons Jesus was killed was because he made himself equal to God.

Throughout the centuries, Christians have tried to understand the relation-ships among the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and they have por-trayed them in different ways to ex-press our understanding of this one God who is three Persons: from the three-leafed shamrock used by St. Patrick to an equilateral triangle to different representations in art. There is even the illustration of the Holy Trinity being like the three forms of water: liquid, ice and steam – they are each unique forms of water, but each is still completely water. While this illustration may help, it is not entirely correct in expressing what we believe about God because water is only sometimes liquid, sometimes ice, and sometimes steam. God is not sometimes Son, sometimes Fa-ther, and sometimes Spirit. He is eternally each, always at the same time.

The Holy Trinity is ultimately a mystery that we human beings will never fully understand because God is infinite and we are finite. As St. Augustine very insightfully said long ago: “If you understand [it], it is not God.” In any event, perhaps some of the images included in this article might help us conceptualize God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Dominican Photos Wanted Dear Parishioners, At the end of June, our beloved Dominicans will be leav-ing Holy Rosary Parish. A Mass of thanksgiving is planned for Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 5:00pm, with a reception to follow. We would like to create a Power Point presentation with images of our parishioners, over the years, with their fa-vorite Dominican priests and/or Brothers. We prefer 4x6 vertical images, but will work with what-ever you send! Please email images to: [email protected] or place in one of the black boxes at the church exits. (Remember to put your name, email & phone number on the back of photos). All photos will be available for pickup at the rectory in July. Thank you for your help!

Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School has been canceled for this year! We traditionally have VBS the end of June. Due to the transition of the Dominicans leaving and the two major celebrations planned for the end of June, we felt that the timing was not going to work. We do promise to come back with a full, exciting program next year.

Dios junto a nosotros, te llamamos Jesús.

Cuando comenzamos con los Tres, sabemos que este Dios es la perfección de dar y de recibir, que el mismo nombre de Ser es comunión, generosidad extravagante, receptividad humilde y diálogo sin obstáculos entre tres. Entonces conocemos a Dios como el flujo más profundo de la Vida misma, la Relación misma. No es que un Ser decida amar;

Glad You Asked! Questions About Our Parish

Q. We were told that it was too difficult for two Dominican priests to run our parish, yet we are getting two diocesan priests. Why is this okay? A. This is a broader question than how many pr iests will serve Holy Rosary parish. As has been explained, for Dominicans it is an issue of community size. Living an authentic Dominican community and prayer life demands a larger community than two people. In parishes all over the United States, adjustments have been made to accommodate the decline in the number of priests. Parishes that used to have five priests now have one and many of the functions that were done by the priests in the past are now done by lay staff members. But these parishes are diocesan parishes, and community life and community prayer are not the focus of diocesan priesthood. In a sense, diocesan priests are much more focused on the demands of parish ministry. So adjustments will need to be made even as they have been this year with only two Dominican priests. It is hard to know exactly what those adjustments will be, but we trust the good people of this parish to support the two new priests. Q. When, exactly, will the Dominicans be leaving? A. The Dominicans will be celebrating Mass for the last time on Sunday, July 1, 2018. Q.Are there any specific items needed for the upcoming receptions? A. We are asking for donations of canned soda. Donations can be left at the parish center Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please call our office at 925-757-4020.

Do you have a question about our parish? Please email us at [email protected]

or leave your question in one of the “Dominican” boxes at the main exits of the church.

Thank you for your support during the transition. With God’s grace and the leadership of many people at Holy

Rosary church and school, the parish will move through this time of change in an open, faith-filled way.

Baccalaureate Ceremony Attention High School Seniors & Families All Antioch Unified School District graduating seniors, their families, and the community at large are invited to attend the interdenominational baccalaureate ceremony.

Sunday, June 3 at 7:00 p.m. Holy Rosary Church

The baccalaureate pays thanksgiving to graduating students for a life dedicated to learning and to wisdom. The tradition was believed to have started at the University of Oxford in 1432 where the candidates for degrees (‘bacca’) were presented with laurels (‘lauri’) of sermonic oration. The local celebration is a solemn but joyous event filled with music by Divine Voices and the Music Masters and by short speeches by students and religious leaders, including our own Father Roberto. Please wear cap and gown (Procession Line will form at 6:45p.m.) For information, call Walter Ruehlig at 925-756-7628
