Just a thought 3-D FAMILY

Every family has its problems. The Holy Family is no exception –except that their problems were rather unique! As you know we have a three year cycle of Sunday readings, Year A, year B and Year C. In each of these cycles the feast of the Holy Family pre-sents different aspects of the problems of this unique family. In Year A the gospel is taken from St Matthew and is the account of the Holy Family having to flee into Egypt. At a deeper level it is possible to see that the child Jesus relives the history of the Jewish people and es-pecially their return from exile and slavery in Egypt. All the issues of mi-grant families are evoked in these deep theological hints. In Year B we hear from Luke’s account of the presentation of the child Jesus in the Temple, a vivid reminder of the Jewishness of Jesus and his parents. They do all that the Law of the Lord requires –indeed in this Holy Family is fulfilled the longings of the Chosen People for the Messiah, the Anointed of God. And in Year C, this year, we hear from Luke about the celebration of Pass-over when the twelve year-old Jesus is brought up to Jerusalem –and is promptly lost. In the loss and finding of Jesus there is a hint of what is to come in his Passion, Death and Resurrection- also in Jerusalem. There are many perplexing issues for Mary and Joseph as Jesus grows up in Nazareth. Contemporary families also face many perplexing issues and surely part of the message of this feast is that there is indeed a plan be-hind all the perplexities; there is the enduring fondness of God for us –so much so that the divine is firmly and irrevocably connected with us in Je-sus, God’s Son. Compliments of the Holy season and blessings on all our families and on the family of the parish, Fr Sean Wales, C.Ss.R.

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

The members of the society wish all parishioners, donors and benefactors a blessed Christmas Tide and a Peace-ful and Prayerful New Year.

Parish Debt: As you may recall the parish was loaned R831,000 by the Redemptorist Province of South Africa to finance various improvements in the par-ish. Through the magnificent work of many fundraisers and the legendary generosity of the parishioners R776,000 has now been paid back. This leaves us with an out-standing amount of R55,000 to repay the capital loan. Although the Re-demptorist Province is also struggling financially, it has agreed to forgo the accumulated interest of R185,771. This means that through the sacrifices of many in the parish and in the Prov-ince, we now owe only R55,000.

Christmas Offering: A hundred thousand thanks for your generous Christmas offering to the Community and thanks also for the many gifts in kind which we re-ceived. Despite the current eco-nomic climate, your generosity is unwavering. Blessings and thanks from each member of the commu-nity
