A WORD FROM YOUR PARISH PRIEST

For more than 800 years it has been part of our Catholic tradition that the month of May has been a time when we are invited to give particular spiritual focus to the role of Our Blessed Lady in the story of our history of salvation, and her constant loving and protective care of our personal and family lives. She stands for all of us as the first disciple of Jesus, and therefore as one whom we can turn to in all our joys and sorrows, our Mother of faith, who will forever lead us to Her Beloved Son, our Most Holy Redeemer.

Many of the Popes down through the ages have invited to make use of the month of May to reflect more deeply on the gift of Mary as our Mother, and as one to whom we can turn in all the events of our daily lives. She has always been understood as one who walked her human journey in complete faith, even in times of complete darkness and confusion. She therefore becomes for each of us a loving companion as we strive to find the presence of God in our personal lives and in the life of our families.

In 1965, Pope Paul VI wrote a beautiful short encyclical on the joys that are to be found in drawing close to Our Blessed Mother during the month of May. He wrote that “The month of May is a month which the piety of the faithful has long dedi-cated to Mary, the Mother of God. Our heart rejoices at the thought of the moving tribute of faith and love which will soon be paid to the Queen of Heaven in every corner of the earth. For this is the month during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God's merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother's throne.”

Pope Paul VI went on to add that during the month of May we should focus in partic-ular on prayer for the gift of peace: personal peace, peace in our homes and peace in the world. He wrote “May she who experienced the cares and hardships of earth-ly life, the weariness of daily toil, the hardships and trials of poverty, and the sor-rows of Calvary, come to aid the needs of the Church and the human race. May she graciously lend an ear to the devout pleas of those all over the world who beg her for peace. May she enlighten the minds of those who rule nations. And finally, may she prevail on God, who rules the winds and storms, to calm the tempests in men's warring hearts and grant us peace in our day. What we seek is true peace grounded on the sturdy foundations of justice and love—on a justice which recognizes the legitimate rights of the weak as well as those of the strong; on a love which keeps men from falling into error through excessive concern for their own interests. Thus each person's rights may be safeguarded without the rights of others being forgot-ten or violated.”

These words of Pope Paul VI, written over 50 years ago now, remain just as mean-ingful to us today as they did in his own time. Indeed, the world is troubled and broken, and crying out for the gift of peace for all. He urged us in particular to make use of the recitation of the Holy Rosary to intercede for the gift of peace for all.

“You should know that we are relying particularly on the prayers of children and those suffering affliction, for their pleas have special power to penetrate heaven and soften God's justice. Since this is a perfect occasion, do not fail to put repeat-ed emphasis on the recitation of the Rosary, the prayer so pleasing to Our Lady It affords the faithful an excellent means of complying effectively and pleasingly with our divine Master's command: "Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.”

Let each of us, and particularly as families, turn to Our Blessed Mother in interces-sion, that peace may be bestowed on our hearts and on the world.

Act of Consecration of the World to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

POPE JOHN PAUL II

1. "We have recourse to your protection, holy Mother of God".

O mother of individuals and peoples, you who "know all their sufferings and their hopes", you who have a mother’s awareness of all the struggles between good and evil, between light and dark-ness, which afflicts the modern world, accept the cry which we, as though moved by the Holy Spirit, address directly to your Heart. Embrace, with the love of the Mother and Handmaid, this human world of ours, which we entrust and consecrate to you, for we are full of disquiet for the earthly and eternal destiny of individuals and peoples.

In a special way we entrust and consecrate to you those individuals and nations which particularly need to be entrusted and consecrated.

"We have recourse to your protection, holy Mother of God: reject not the prayers we send up to you in our necessities". Reject them not!

Accept our humble trust—and our act of entrusting!

2. By reason of that consecration the disciples of all ages are called to spend themselves for the salvation of the world, and to supplement Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is the Church (cf. 2 Cor 12:15; Col 1:24).

Before you, Mother of Christ, before your Immaculate Heart, I today, together with the whole Church, unite myself with our Redeemer in this his consecration for the world and for people which only in his divine Heart has the power to obtain pardon and to secure reparation.

The power of this consecration lasts for all time and embraces all individuals, peoples and na-tions. It overcomes every evil that the spirit of darkness is able to awaken, and has in fact awak-ened in our times, in the heart of man and in his history.

Oh, how deeply we feel the need for consecration on the part of humanity and of the world—our modern world—in union with Christ himself! The redeeming work of Christ, in fact, must be shared in by the world by means of the Church.

And so, blessed be all those souls that obey the call of eternal Love! Blessed be all those who, day after day, with undiminished generosity accept your invitation, O Mother, to do what your Jesus tells them and give the Church and the world a serene testimony of lives inspired by the Gospel.

Above all, blessed be you, the Handmaid of the Lord, who in the fullest way obey the divine call!

Hail to you, who are "wholly united" to the redeeming consecration of your Son! Mother of the Church! Enlighten the People of God along the paths of faith, of hope and love! Help us to live with the whole truth of the consecration of Christ for the entire human family of the modern world.

3. In entrusting to you, O Mother, the world, all individuals and peoples, we also entrust to you the consecration itself, for the world’s sake, placing it in your motherly Heart.

Oh, Immaculate Heart! Help us to conquer the menace of evil, which so easily takes root in the hearts of the people of today, and whose immeasurable effects already weigh down upon our modern world and seem to block the paths towards the future!

From famine and war, deliver us. From nuclear war, from incalculable self-destruction, from every kind of war, deliver us. From sins against the life of man from its very beginning, deliver us. From hatred and from the demeaning of the dignity of the children of God, deliver us. From every kind of injustice in the life of society, both national and international, deliver us. From readiness to trample on the commandments of God, deliver us. From sins against the Holy Spirit, deliver us, deliver us.

Accept, O Mother of Christ, this cry laden with the sufferings of all individual human beings, laden with the sufferings of whole societies.

Let there be revealed once more in the history of the world the infinite power of merciful Love. May it put a stop to evil. May it transform consciences. May your Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of hope! Amen.
