“When we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs, not ours. More than performing works of mercy, we are paying a debt of justice.” - St. Gregory the Great, Regula Pastoralis, 3, 21: PL 77,87

Next week, we will take up the Collections for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). CCHD was founded by the U.S. bishops, who recognized that the lives of those in need will not improve until the systems and policies that keep people in poverty change. For over 40 years, CCHD has funded community groups that cre-ate lasting change. Fight poverty in America. Defend human dignity. Give to the CCHD Collection.

Defend Human Dignity.

“ From his fullness we have received grace upon grace.” - John 1:16

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora I attended the First National Assembly of Filipino Priests serving the Roman Catho-lic Churches in the United States of Ameri-ca on November 8-11, 2011, held at the Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel, Los

Angeles, CA. There were 367 Filipino priests who attend-ed. The total number of Filipino priests in the US is 839. In California alone, there are 287 Filipino priests and more or less 50 are serving in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Our very own Bishop Randy Calvo, who was once a priest at Holy Name, now Bishop of Reno and Chairman of the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs, presided at the opening mass and ceremony. Our SF Auxiliary Bishop Robert McElroy was also a presenter at the congress. Retired Bishop of Santa Rosa, and former Auxiliary Bishop of SF, Daniel Walsh, now residing at St. Anne’s Parish Rectory, was also in attendance. On a personal note, I was deeply honored to be part of the historic event, besides just being a participant. The USCCB Cultural Diversity Office commissioned Fr. Ricky Manalo, CSP, a nationally renowned liturgical composer, and me to write a song for the occasion. I wrote the music and Fr. Ricky co-wrote the lyrics with me. It was sung as the Finale song of the Priests’ concert. If you want to hear the song, go to www.youtube.com and search for “Chosen and Anointed”. Now from Hollywood, let’s go back to Holy Name! Here is some good news. We received the bill from the plastering project of our church ceiling and it came out three thousand dollars less than we were origi-nally quoted. Secondly, a Structural Engineer from Murphy, Burry, Curry, took a look at our Fire Escape at the Pasto-ral Center and he thinks we can just refurbish the fire escape, instead of replacing the whole thing, which would cost us $50,000, more or less. Let’s pray that their proposal can save us a lot of money. On a sad note, we lost one of our parishioners this week, Eleanor Geno. She was 96 years old; please keep her in your prayers. Last Saturday, November 5th, we had a Memorial Mass for our parishioners who died last year. There were 37 of them, 5 were members of the Knights of Holy Name, 2 were school parents and a lot of our longtime parishioners. We’ve lost a lot of parishion-ers in just the period of one year.

Ten years ago we had Steve Jobs, Johnny Cash and Bob Hope.

Now we have no jobs, no cash, and no hope!! We hope and pray that the newly elected leaders

of our city will provide jobs, cash and hope again.

November 13, 2011 T H I RT Y-TH I RD SUNDAY I N ORDINARY T I M E

God’s gifts aren’t randomly scattered, but instead confidently entrusted to us. Today’s Readings Prv 31:10 –13, 19 –20, 30–31 1 Thes 5:1–6 Mt 25:14–30 or 25:14–15, 19–21

It takes courage to entrust something pre-cious to someone else. New parents stall when leav-ing their newborn in a babysitter’s care for the first time. A mother repeatedly reminds her daughter on prom night that her grandmother’s pearl necklace needs great care. I’ve hesitated when handing my car keys to my husband, even though he’s the safest driver I know. When we entrust another with a precious gift, there’s an unwritten covenant that the recipient will use the gift wisely and re-sponsibly. Such was the covenant between the mas-ter and his servants in today’s Gospel. Jesus tells us the master entrusted his precious possessions to the servants. This wasn’t a random scattering of ex-cess monies. The master gave particular thought to what each servant should receive based on his abili-ties. The master was thrilled at the first two serv-ants’ use of his gift and gravely disappointed in the third’s refusal to use the gift responsibly. We know the master represents God, the servants us, and the talents God’s many gifts to us. But have we pon-dered our unwritten covenant with God—God’s courageous choice to entrust to us what is precious to him and an expectation that we’ll use these gifts to the best of our ability? God’s gifts aren’t randomly scattered, but instead confidently entrust-ed to us for use in serving others. Perhaps we ought to look at our good health, ample food and clothing, creative talents, and compassion as keys to God’s Corvette or the finest pearl necklace in the divine jewelry collection. They’re to be used— and used well—in the service of the Lord. JANEL ESKER [email protected]

Dear Holy Name Families, We are constantly working on keeping Holy Name School safe for your children. To that end, we at-tempt to have the two side gates to the schoolyard and the big schoolyard gate locked at all times. Even though one side gate is unlocked at 7:30, so that the traffic patrol students can set up cones and put on their gear, your child(ren) may not come into the yard until Mr. Vince DeLucca comes out into the yard at 7:45. Thank you for consideration in this matter. Miss Linda McCausland’s family left a generous donation to Holy Name School. We have purchased COBY Personal CD Players for our first grade students. Students enjoy listening to stories as they follow along in their reading selections. I’m sure Miss McCausland would be pleased that, through her families’ generosity, young children are enjoying their reading program. As you may know, Holy Name students are in-volved in the nationwide Mathletics Competition. Miss Rivieccio’s 6th grade class placed number 1 in this week’s Top 50 USA Classes. Congratulations, 6th graders!

Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos
