Evangelization The New Evangelization calls each of us to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel. The focus of the New Evangelization calls all Catho-lics to be evangelized and then go forth to evangelize. In a special way, the New Evangelization is focused on 're-proposing' the Gospel to those who have experienced a crisis of faith.Pope Benedict XVI called for the re-proposing of the Gospel "to those regions awaiting the first evangelization and to those regions where the roots of Christianity are deep but who have experienced a serious crisis of faith due to seculari-zation." The New Evangelization invites each Catholic to renew their relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church.

The Feast of the Preesentation of the Lord and the Purification of our Lady

Our lighted candles are a sign of the divine splendor of the one who comes to expel the dark shadows of evil and to make the whole universe radiant with the brilliance of his eternal light. Our candles also show how bright our souls should be when we go to meet Christ.

The Mother of God, the most pure Virgin, carried the true light in her arms and brought him to those who lay in darkness. We too should carry a light for all to see and reflect the radiance of the true light as we hasten to meet him. The light has come and has shone upon a world enveloped in shadows;the Day-spring from on high has visited us and given light to those who lived in darkness. This, then, is our feast, and we join in procession with lighted candles to reveal the light that has shone upon us and the glory that is yet to come to us through him. So let us hasten all together to meet our God. The true light has come, the light that enlightens every man who is born into this world. Let all of us, my brethren, be enlightened and made radiant by this light. Let all of us share in its splendor, and be so filled with it that no one remains in the darkness. Let us be shining ourselves as we go together to meet and to receive with the aged Simeon the light whose brilliance is eternal. Rejoicing with Simeon, let us sing a hymn of thanksgiving to God, the Father of the light, who sent the true light to dispel the darkness and to give us all a share in his splendor. Through Simeon’s eyes we too have seen the salvation of God which he prepared for all the nations and revealed as the glory of the new Israel, which is ourselves. As Simeon was released from the bonds of this life when he had seen Christ, so we too were at once freed from our old state of sinfulness. By faith we too embraced Christ, the salvation of God the Father, as he came to us from Bethlehem. Gentiles before, we have now become the people of God. Our eyes have seen God incarnate, and because we have seen him present among us and have mentally received him into our arms, we are called the new Israel. Never shall we forget this presence; every year we keep a feast in his honor.

+from a seventh century sermon by St. Sophronius

Ash Wednesday As has been the custom we request that all people having blessed palms needing to be burned bring them to the Church/Chapel before Ash Wednesday, the 26th of Feb-ruary. “Ash Wednesday is full of joy...The source

of all sorrow is the illusion that of our-

selves we are anything but dust.”

+ Dom Thomas Merton, monk

Check back often! The Friends of Fatima continue to meet on the first Saturday of the month. We attend mass at 8am and then the girls participate in CCD. After CCD we stay for breakfast and our art project. This year we are going to center our time together on a different Christian virtue every month. If you are interest-ed in joining us or trying out a session, please contact Thamara Davis at 401.663.5590.

Young Menz Group Our meetings begin with the 8 am Mass on the First Saturday, followed by confession, the holy rosary, and breakfast at the Rectory. “To evangelize means: to show this path—to teach the art of living. At the beginning of his public life Jesus says: I have come to evangelize the poor (Luke 4:18); this means: I have the response to your funda-mental question; I will show you the path of life, the path toward happiness—rather: I am that path.” --Joseph Cardi-nal Ratzinger on the New Evangelization

“….Evangelization must be directed to the Church itself….It is painfully clear that many Catholics (and other Christians) have not been effectively incorporated into the life in Christ. Baptized as in-fants many have never made a personal commit-ment to the Lord Jesus Christ and the Gospel. As adolescents and adults many dirft awary from the Church.” (Redemptoris Missio)

Catechism Remind-

“Each generation is converted by the saint who contradicts it most.” G.K. Chesterton

Participation in the New Evangelization is centered on five strategic priorities approved by the full body of bishops several years ago, and are aimed at en-countering those in need, bringing them hope, and nurturing them spiritually and physically. These pri-orities are: *Evangelization: Open wide the doors to Christ through missionary discipleship and personal encounter. *Family and marriage: Encourage and heal fam-ilies; inspire Catholics to embrace the sacrament of mat-rimony. *Human life and dignity: Uphold the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death with special concern for the poor and vulnerable. *Vocations and ongoing formation: Encourage vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life, and provide meaningful ongoing formation to clergy, reli-gious and lay ministers. *Religious freedom: Promote and defend the freedom to serve, witness and worship, in the U.S. and abroad. The identified priorities are also an invitation to dioc-esan and parish leaders into the collective work of the bishops at the national level. "Where there are op-portunities at all levels of the Church to work togeth-er, the strategic plan will truly find its deepest mean-ing," reads the report. "So too, the identified priori-ties are an invitation to the broader people of God, whose generosity and prayer give lifeblood to the ap-ostolic life of the Conference and the Church."
