One of my responsibilities outside of the Parish is to travel with the Illinois State Knights of Columbus to various points across this vast state. I am re-sponsible for preparing Morning Prayer and assist-ing at Mass. Last weekend I joined my Brother Knights at the Summer Meeting in Lisle, Illinois. It is an opportunity to kick off the Fraternal year and install State K of C and Columbian Squires Offices. We gathered together for Holy Mass and Installa-tion at the beautiful St. Procopius Abbey Church in Lisle. There is some-thing special at St Procopius and you feel it the moment you walk into the sacred space. A friend and member of the group who was attending Mass approached me and asked me a question, “Deacon what makes this a Catholic Church, there are no statues, no stations of the cross?” St Proco-pius is very different from our space at St. Boniface. We have beautiful statues, paintings, stained glass windows and our majestic High Altar. St Procopius has two major features the Altar and Ambo. I explained that there is a difference between a Parish Church and in this case an Abbey. The space is designed to meet the needs of the Monks in their daily prayer life. Following Holy Communion, I looked out at the nearly full Abbey and I had to smile. The question answered itself! WE, all of us, gathered to-gether as one body, brought together through the Sacrifice of the Mass is what makes St Procopius a Catholic Church. What truly amazed me was that each of us there were members of different parishes in different dio-ceses across Illinois and beyond. But yet here we were celebrating togeth-er. In the Gospel of Mark this week we are reminded of this very event —gathering together as Church. “So they went off in the boat by them-selves to a deserted place. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.” Jesus saw all the people gathered and he began to teach them. During these summer months many of us travel and have the opportunity to visit a Church in another town or state. The language spoken might be Spanish, the people may look different
than you do but it’s easy to feel at home in the Catholic Church.

Adult Education Summer 2015 Martin Luther and the Reformation
In 2017 people from around the world will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Numerous political, economic, social and religious transfor-mations caused the reformation as well as the personality of one Augustinian monk fearing for his own salvation. Join us in this special series as we examine the life and teachings of Martin Luther. Rather than simply dismissing Luther’s work as polemical or uncritically accepting his teachings we will watch a DVD series by Dr. Phillip Cary who balances different perspectives regarding this remarkable man. We will meet on Monday evenings from 6:30—8 p.m. in the St. Boniface Meeting
Room. Please join us for food, fellowship, and learning Date Topic

Respect Life Corner Migrants and Refugees—”The church without frontiers, Mother to all, spreads throughout the world a culture of acceptance and solidarity, in which no one is seen as useless, out of place or disposable.” Pope Francis, 2015 World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: The Pope is telling us, on his watch the church will reject and transcend the “throwaway” culture and instead be a culture of encounter. Go to www.usccb.org to learn more about the Church’s position on immigration. Pray for the grace to welcome migrants and refugees with joy and generosity, and to give witness to God’s love for all people, as we celebrate the many gifts they bring.

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Cycle B Sunday, July 19, 2015
In 2014, the Most Reverend Edward Braxton, Bishop of Belleville, issued a call for parishes to work more closely together in order to strengthen the local Church, strengthen their ministry, and prepare for a time when the number of priests serving the Dio-cese of Belleville may dwindle. This call was through the Pastoral Plan for Renewal and Restructuring. Our Partnership has begun!

Sacraments: New Perspectives
Traditional religious education emphasizes the function and role of the seven Sacraments, but our Theology on Tap sessions will provide a broader perspective of what the sacraments mean and how we can live them out. Sacra-ments force us to rethink our notions of reality, our purpose, and our destiny. Join us for hu-mor, intellectual stimulation, fellowship, and tasty beverages!
