From the Pastors

Dear Parish Family,

If the Holy Spirit changes our hearts, why do we still

struggle with sin? Luther deals with this question in many

places. One of them is in his interpretation of Psalm 51. In this

psalm King David asks the Lord to create a clean heart in him.

According to the superscription the context for the psalm is

when the prophet Nathan went to speak to the king about his sin

with Bathsheba. Even David, favored of the Lord, required

forgiveness of sins.

In his commentary, Luther writes that the difference

between true saints and sham saints is that true saints are aware

of their sins. They know that they are not what they should and

want to be. We are daily in need of forgiveness of our sins. The

false saints believe that they have no sin. In their pride they

justify themselves before God. But, we must pray until death,

“Forgive us our trespasses.”

From our birth, Luther continues, we are sinners. Adam

must die so that Christ may arise completely. Only death will

free us from the struggle with the old Adam/Eve.

From the Pastors

Continued from pg. 1

Even if we are outwardly righteous, we can never

be so inwardly until we enter life after death. To claim

inward purity in this life is self-seeking. Instead, we must

know ourselves inwardly and always seek our

righteousness in God through Christ. We become clean

through the blood of Christ. The outward works of man

cannot remove sin, only the inward work of God. Only God

can create a clean heart. Inner righteousness cannot be

attained in this life, but we must always seek it. A new

heart in us can only be achieved by God Himself. The

heart will be thoroughly cleansed on the day we enter the

heavenly city. The old Adam/Eve can be eliminated only

by our physical death. Those who have a good will formed

by the Holy Spirit freely serve God in all circumstances.

We are made pious through God’s own action.

We must attend to Luther’s words, which are

rooted in the biblical teaching. We continue to come back

to the Word of God time and time again to receive

forgiveness through the power of the Holy Spirit. When

we die, God will win in us the final victory. Until then, we

pray with David, “Create in me a clean heart, O God.”

In Christ, The Rev. Dr. Michael G. Tavella The Rev. N. Amanda Grimmer

Earl & Judi Reeder’s Road to Estonia – Part 3

We thought that this month we would tell you a little about the country we all have been praying for the

last few months.

Geographically, Estonia is on the north-eastern edge of the European Union, bordering Russia and

Latvia. Estonia has a population of just 1.3 million but is larger than Denmark or Holland.

The Estonian language‘s a finno-ugric language - resembles most to Finnish and is different from the

Latvian and Russian language. Estonia was occupied by the Soviets for decades but Estonia sees itself

as more influenced by Nordic tastes and traditions - Scandinavia with a twist.

Tallinn is the medieval capital and by far the biggest city, with a population of around 400,000. Tallinn

is located in the north-eastern part of the country almost directly south of Helsinki, Finland. Tartu, with

100,000 people, is the young yet timeless university town where we will be working. Tartu is located

about 200 km south east of Tallinn and is about 50 km west of the Russian border.

Since the 16th century, Estonia has been a predominantly protestant (Lutheran) country. Our Mission is

a Bible Camp in Tartu at the Tartu Academy of Theology.

A typical Estonian would like to portray himself as hard-working, reliable, smart, innovative and friendly.

Though these qualities are all true, they are often kept as a hidden treasure. In attempt to avoid being

seen as obtrusive or aggressive, Estonians (even service staff) keep to themselves and wait for you to

make the first move. Once there, you will be greeted with an honest and kind attitude. Compliments

given by an Estonian are genuine, handshakes are valid and invitations heartfelt. No wonder many

people claim Estonians make the best of friends.

The Estonian sense of humor is dry, sarcastic and quite often politically incorrect. In Europe, it is most

similar to the British one – jokes at their own expense are popular, though you are much more likely to

get a grin and not open laughter as a response.

Estonia is one of the most non-religious countries in the world but Estonians value traditions. Often,

Christian holidays and rituals are followed or mixed with pagan ones. A good example is All Saints Day

on 2nd of November: the day before, many visit churches and graves of the lost family members, and

at night, candles are lit on the windows of thousands of Estonian homes to greet the wandering souls.

Children go to school for 12 years, starting from the age of 7, and even though math, physics and

science are a huge part of the curriculum, they all learn at least 2 other languages. Most commonly,

Russian and English are taught at school; French, German and Swedish are popular alternatives.

Dear Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church,

Thank you so much for your generous donation of household and baby items to the mothers at the Cradle of Hope. It is very kind of you to remember us. Your donation is extremely valuable and the items you collected are ones used regularly at the home. We deeply appreciate your interest in our desire to provide housing for one year to homeless mothers and their babies. Ceitera, one of our recent residents, moved to her own apartment in September after completing her year at the Cradle of Hope. She finished training, and began working as an adviser in the Philadelphia Prison System last fall. Khadijah is working as a teacher’s aide in Philadelphia. Crystal and Paulisha are taking summer classes at Montgomery County Community College, and working to pursue their associate’s degrees. The babies at the Cradle of Hope- Essence, Heidi, Krista- are thriving. Our transitional housing program requires that each resident be attending school and/or working while in the program. Your gift also blesses each child. As the mothers obtain education, employment and permanent housing, the cycle of poverty is reversed and the children’s lives are permanently affected. During their year at the Cradle of Hope, we have seen the young women grow in confidence, strength, and hope. With weekly Bible study, workshops on parenting, nutrition and other topics, each mother sets goals for her life and works with the staff and volunteers to achieve those goals. With your gift, you have helped this ministry to continue. Sincerely. Betsy Stoltzfus Director, Cradle of Hope

Become a Missionary without Leaving Your Hometown

How can you become a missionary without leaving your community? The answer is to help

Holy Trinity collect shoeboxes. Every time you make a shoe purchase, please consider donating your

box for our annual Operation Christmas Child project. We hope to fill twice as many shoeboxes as last

year for children in need throughout the world. These shoeboxes not only bring children items they can

use and enjoy in everyday life, they are also packed with the Gospel story in each child’s language. For

many children and their families, these gift-filled shoeboxes bring the love of Jesus in a new and exciting

way and lead them to a relationship with the Savior and worship at their local church.

While many of you will personally pack shoeboxes, we will also need your support in providing

even more shoeboxes for wider church project. Last year, approximately 2/3 of the shoeboxes collected

at Holy Trinity were prepared by individual church members and the other 1/3 were prepared by a

dedicated group of church members who wanted to be sure that even more children were reached. They

gave time on a Saturday morning in November to come to a group shoebox-filling session. We will hold

that session again this fall.

Watch for shoebox dates and more details in the fall Echoes and visit our website at

www.holytrinity.net click on How do I find out about?... on our home page and you will find Operation

Christmas Child Shoeboxes in the drop down list.
