Dear Parishioners,

Birthdays are a time for family and friends to get together yearly to celebrate the birth of a person

who is close to us. We get together and give that person a gift(s) which shows our love and apprecia-

tion for that person.

On Christmas, do we remember to give Jesus a gift? Also, what type of gift can or do we give Him

which is fitting? We can’t give Him physical gifts like we give family members or friends but we can

give Him spiritual gifts; gifts of love. For example, we can spend more time in prayer, we can be nicer

to other members of our family, we can spend some time in meditation or thanksgiving either before

or after Mass, we can attend a daily Mass during the week, we can work on being more thoughtful of

others, or we can try to work more on some sin that we struggle with. We can also work on strength-

ening a virtue such as charity, patience, prudence, temperance, or courage. We could donate money we

normally would have spent on ourselves to a charity which helps those who are less fortunate than we

are. Or maybe we could offer up any hurt which we harbor and can’t give up, asking Jesus for help to

let go of the past so that we can forgive. There are many creative possibilities of what we can offer

our Lord. This Advent Season we are inaugurating a “Birthday Gift for Jesus” project. All families,

individuals, and especially children are encouraged to consider certain acts or prayers that could be

given as a gift to Jesus. Everyone is encouraged to record the acts and prayers, and for each one per-

formed or offered, you are asked to place a penny (pennies only please) in the designated “Birthday

Gift for Jesus” receptacle. After the last Mass of Christmas Day, we will collect and count the pen-

nies and will announce in the bulletin how many birthday gifts were given to Jesus. The pennies will be

donated to a local organization that helps the poor. So we all are encouraged to offer gifts to Jesus

in this Advent Season.

Christmas is the day when we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior who with the other members

of the Trinity show us Their limitless love for us through Christ's sacrifices for us. Christmas is the

feast which marks the beginning of Christ's redemptive action, His Passion, Death and Resurrection.

Christ, the second person of the Trinity became one of us. As St. Paul states in his epistles, he took

our form and emptied himself through these statements, St. Paul is reminding us that Jesus came

from heaven and took on our nature,

our frailties, our weaknesses, in or-

der to redeem us, so we can have the

chance to be with the Trinity in

Heaven.
