PREVIEW OF NEXT WEEK'S READINGS

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: 1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21 Elijah the prophet followed God's instruction to appoint a man named Elisha as his successor. Elijah threw his cloak over Elisha, who went and said good-bye to his family, then followed Elijah without question.

Second Reading: Galatians 5:1, 13-18 Paul reminds us that people were freed from the old law through Christ. But he makes it clear that this freedom does not mean giving in to evil desires. Instead, we must be guided by the Spirit and most importantly love our neighbor as ourselves.

Gospel: Luke 9:51-62 Jesus set out for Jerusalem, and passed through a town where he was not welcomed. He reprimanded his disciples for desiring vengeance against the town. One man wanted to follow Jesus when he had finished his duties at home. Jesus expressed that a man who begins a task, but constantly looks back is unfit for the reign of God.

JUSTICE & PEACE

Local supermarkets are talking about "new low prices" in recent weeks. But groceries are still waaaaay expensive, especially if you are on a low-paying part time job. Here's where Holy Comforter can help. We provide nourishing food every month to those who have too much month and not enough pay check. You can help by making regular donations to our pantry.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

TO PROCLAIM THE WORD

Holy Comforter has been fortunate in having a dedicated group of Lectors but attrition has created the need for more volunteers. Our Lectors are all registered members of Holy Comforter and must have a desire to serve their fellow parishioners as they PROCLAIM the Word of God at Mass. Training and ongoing support materials are provided and "mike fright" can - and will - be overcome. Training generally requires one session at a mutually agreeable time and the ongoing commitment averages one Mass assignment per month. For more information, please call Frank McCarthy at 971-6780. Thank you.

FROM THE PASTOR

“Worship The Lord In Spirit And Truth” (continued)

Ways to Worship God

The most well-known form of Catholic worship is the Mass, but it's not the only one. In the Mass itself, there are three major groupings of Rites in the Catholic Church, the Roman Rite, the Antiochian Rite (Syria) and the Alexandrian Rite (Egypt). Later on the Byzantine Rite derived as a major Rite from the Antiochian, under the influence of St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom. From these four parent rites, two-dozen liturgical Rites (Western and Eastern) have developed which are in union with the Holy See. And today the Mass according to the Roman Rite has two forms: (1) the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite and (2) the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Tridentine Mass). In the Ordinary Form the Mass is celebrated according to the Missale Romanum of 1969, promulgated by Pope Paul VI, which is currently in its third edition (2002). This form is widely celebrated in

the vernacular. In the Extraordinary Form, Mass is celebrated according to the Missale Romanum of 1570. While this Missal was codified at the Council of Trent, it was in use at least since the time of St. Gregory the Great. It is used today according to the 1962 edition, promulgated by Blessed Pope John XXIII during the Second Vatican Council. In accordance with norms of the Holy See, all Roman Rite clergy may celebrate according to the Ordinary or Extraordinary Form according to the needs of the people of God.

Since the Mass is the formal, official worship service of the Catholic Church, it is also the most important and sacred act of worship in the Catholic Church. It important for us to understand what is taking place in this great form of Catholic worship. The Mass incorporates the Bible (Sacred Scripture), prayer, sacrifice, hymns, symbols, gestures, sacred food for the soul, and directions on how to live a Catholic life — all in one ceremony.

The first part of the Mass is the Liturgy of the Word, and its main focus is on Bible readings as an integral part of daily and weekly worship. The second part is the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and its main focus is the holiest and most sacred part of the Mass — the Holy Eucharist

The Liturgy of the Word: The first part of the Mass is built around hearing the word of God. After the priest and his attendants process to the altar, the priest and congregation participate in the Penitential Rite, which is simply an acknowledgement that everyone is a sinner and has sinned to some degree during the week. This Confiteor is followed by the Kyrie, which expresses public guilt and shame for any sins against God. The Gloria, a hymn of adoration of God, is followed by a prayer that addresses all three persons of the Holy Trinity, and that usually sets the tone for the rest of the prayers and scripture readings at Mass. Every day has its own unique prayers and readings chosen by the Church, not the individual parish. The congregation then listens to the scripture readings and the homily, which is different than a sermon in that it’s an explanation and reflection on the Word of God read only by clergy. The priest or deacon connects the Scripture readings to the daily lives of the people, the teachings of the Church, or the particular celebration at hand. On Sundays and holy days, the homily is followed by the Profession of Faith, or Creed, which succinctly sums up all the teachings of the Church. Then comes the Prayers of the Faithful, which are petitions are for the pope, the Church, the civil authorities, current concerns, and so on, to which the people respond with “Lord, hear our prayer” or “Hear us, O Lord.”

Formation NoteS

Dear Friends, Fr. Tom Stegman, the Jesuit scripture scholar many of you met last fall, is working this summer on a new book about Pauline Spirituality. He ran the draft of his introduction by me last week. I was once again deeply impressed by Tom’s insight into the relevance of the Pauline writings to our lives. Because of our ongoing considerations in this space of the importance of community in faith and Christian formation, I wanted to share a couple quotes with you. In his introduction, Tom considers Paul’s first salutation to the newly founded Corinthian community. (1 Cor 2) He writes that Paul addresses the people as “the church of God that is in Corinth … those who have been made holy in Christ Jesus, [who are] called to be holy …” Tom notes that the word translated in English as church, ekklesia, literally means “the called forth ones.” As we are church, this means us, too. Tom writes: “A challenging feature of Pauline spirituality is its communal focus. There is no such thing for him as a ‘me and Jesus’ spirituality, one that can exclude the exigencies and demands of human relationships … Life in the Spirit and ecclesial reality are two sides of the same coin. Paul insists that God is generous in bestowing manifestations and gifts of the Spirit. Everyone who is in Christ is gifted, and the scope of the gifts is impressive. Paul’s main concern is to instill an appreciation of the purpose of the spiritual gifts – the edification or building up of the body of Christ.” “Paul’s vision of life in the Spirit entails both inspiration and challenge … With Paul, gift and privilege require responsibility. The indicative – ‘you are holy by virtue of the Spirit’s presence within’ – leads to the imperative – ‘become a holy person/people.’ In other words, holy ones. Called to be holy.” I will keep you updated on Tom’s progress. (I’m thinking he needs to come talk to us again!)

Many summer blessings,

Dawn

Throughout his life, he performed miracles of healing, caring for both the physically and the spiritually sick. This film, full of gorgeous Italian scenery, follows Padre Pio’s life from a young boy through to his death.

Maryjane Fuller, the diocesan director of Safe Environment programs, will lead the training.
