Becoming a small business owner was a big step for both of us, but what better town than this, which loves to support the local movement!

ock Paper Scissors Co-Owners Heather McNulty Haynie and Dani Antol first purchased the boutique in 2010 from SCARPA-owner Amy Gardner. The two had worked together at a local advertising agency and shared a love of paper and clean design, plus an enterprising spirit they both inherited from their business-owner fathers. It is amazing sometimes when I think about the support we havewhether it [is] other local business owners or customers who shop locally, says Antol. In addition to being featured in The Knot and an upcoming spread in Martha Stewart Weddings, RPS design work can be see all over town theyve donated their services to nonprofits such as Bike Charlottesville, CACF Future Fund and the Junior League of Charlottesville. As self-proclaimed paperistas, they always remember their roots as a paper store while simultaneously seeking out fun and unique gift items. I love hearing people laugh with friends while they read some of the cards around the shop, says Haynie. Among their current obsessions? Rifle Paper Company and Arzberger note cards. Nothing is more handsome than a super thick Arzberger note card engraved with ones name in a clean font at the top! according to the co-owners. Forging a

A lbemarle House originally built by Patricia Kluge and her then-husband, the late John Kluge, and now owned by none other than Donald Trump is one of the areas most lavish homes. With 23,000-square-feet and 45 rooms, its fit for a king.

The mansion was also the first large-scale residential project for Keswick-based full-service metalsmith shop Stokes of England, a job the company landed only a few yeas after its founding in 1981.

Local resident Stephen Stokes and his late father Joe created all of the hand-forged iron and bronze in the mansion, working with famous interior designer David Easton. Since that time, the company has gone on to earn both national and international attention, with features in numerous prestigious publications including Architectural Digest, Southern Living, Home and Garden, The New York Times and the Washington Post.

Legacy

In addition to the Kluges, Stokes has worked for royalty and celebrities including the royal families of Great Britain, Qatar and Oman and acclaimed actress and local Sissy Spacek. Though the companys work knows no geographic bounds, they have maintained the roots they set down in Keswick decades ago and continue to foster a strong local presence. In fact, if youve driven by the Albemarle County Office Building lately, youve probably seen the weather vane they designed.

Stokes who first came to America as an exchange student from England and eventually settled locally with wife Alison is quite the versatile man. He meticulously handcrafts fine works of art, ranging from intricate fireplace screens to enormous iron gates. Sure, hes worked with some big-name designers and architects, but he always welcomes custom orders from local residents and even offers the opportunity to tour his forge. Thats right, the forge. You can watch the

blacksmiths hard at work at the fire firsthand.

The Stokes of England gallery in Gordonsville displays a selection of lighting, furniture, hardware and more that are ready for purchase. Multiple visits are a good idea as the selection is always changing. When we get a whim to make something, we make it, Stokes comments. Stokes and his crew of skilled craftsmen design everything in the store, and they are constantly trying out different things to see what will be popular.

[Clients] get a kick out of

realizing their vision in iron or bronze and watching it be

made at the shop.

To Stokes, the benefits of shopping local are pretty clear. When you have custom work made at his shop, you are going to get exactly what you want the right design, the right size and the right shape. Stokes works closely with clients from beginning to end to bring their vision to life. Stokes of England even offers a free design service they sit with clients and sketch until the design is perfect. [Clients] get a kick out of realizing their vision in iron or bronze and watching it be made at the shop, he says.

Not only does this practice allow you to maintain control over the design, but Stokes also guarantees that anything made by them will be around for many hundreds of years. Stokes pieces are ideal family heirlooms, personalized accessories for the home that will survive multiple generations.

Incorporating metalwork into your home is easier than you might think. A lot of people dont think about where ironwork occurs in their home, he says. For your first piece, Stokes recommends furniture or a fireplace screen. For example, a wrought-iron dining room table would look gorgeous with a marble or wooden top. A custom-made fireplace screen could display a monogram or the silhouette of a beloved pet. Wine racks are a good pick for oenophiles what better way to proudly display your collection?

For those who might be looking for

the next step in metalwork, Stokes also creates light fixtures. Imagine illuminating your dining room with an elegant chandelier, or creating an intimate and inviting glow with a lantern in the foyer. Meanwhile, if youre looking for a definite showstopper, check out his medieval-style wine cellar doors that are exact reproductions of ones in medieval homes in Britain.

Blacksmithing has been in the Stokes family since the 1600s as Stokes puts it, he has iron in his blood. His father traveled around Africa and Asia as a senior metalsmithing expert with the United Nations before teaching Stokes the family craft. The two started by crafting smaller pieces, such as swords and knives, and eventually grew to make lighting fixtures, balconies and massive iron gates. A few years after the company was first founded, Joe returned to England and ran the companys U.K. branch until his death. Stokes of England U.K. is now headed by Stephens younger brother Chris.

[Charlottesville] reminds me a lot of Shropshire, where Im from, Stokes says. I like the fact that the community in Charlottesville is very international and mixed. It doesnt feel like a small American town. Its very cosmopolitan. A lot of people in this area appreciate the work that we do.

Capturing LightFeaturing Local Artist Bob Cronk

As the sun moves across the sky, everything changes, according to Scottsville artist Bob Cronk, who works to recreate the subtleties of light and color in his paintings. The play of light is both the key to any good painting and the element of nature that is the most difficult to capture, he says. This challenge is precisely what makes landscapes and seascapes among his favorite themes.

The artist, who primarily works with acrylic on canvas and panels, has lived in the area for the past 25 years, first moving here with his wife and two sons to be near his mother.

I saw Charlottesville as a great place to raise a family, he says. Central Virginia is not only a great place to live but provides endless sources of inspiration. The arts thrive here.

His upcoming artistic plans include creating a collection of paintings depicting everyday scenes in the Charlottesville region. Even after all of the leaves have fallen and the farms look barren, our area still boasts magnificent colors, according to Cronk.

In winter, most think the colors have all but gone, he says. Thats not really the case because if one looks closer one can see the muted blues and sparkle of yellows across the snow. Even barren trees have a majesty that show off siennas and blues.

Cronk comes from a family of artists, including his Uncle Butch, who was an illustrator and his mentor since the age of 5. His father was in the military, which required Cronk to travel frequently and he made sure to always have a sketch pad in hand.

I remember while on a road trip from Seattle to Ft. Knox I drew nothing but noses, he recalls. The next trip...trees, and so on.

Two years ago, he started working on his art full-time after retiring as a senior project manager of large construction projects at both UVA and JMU. In addition to his landscapes and seascapes, Cronk does portraits, caricatures and abstract images. His hope is that his art can serve as a respite from the busyness of a fast-paced world.

Our world is overly noisy....I hope to convey with my paintings something calming and helpful in taking off the hard edges of the day, he says.

My [pasta] flavors are a bit like children, there are no favorites but each

has its special quality.

ran Valente who owns Pasta Valente with her daughter Mary Ann started selling her pasta at the City Market in the 1980s when specialty food was just beginning to take off. It was a hit, quite often she sold out before the day was over, recalls Mary Ann. Her mother took over the pasta making in the family as her grandmother aged; inspired by Italian tradition, she used a small hand-cranked pasta machine set up in her sewing room. Pasta Valente is now available at retail outlets in 48 states, including locally at Foods of All Nations and Kroger. Despite their widespread growth, they have maintained the homemade flavor and texture of their products and continue to support the community, donating to silent auctions, charity events and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Pasta Valentes standard staples like garlic parsley and tomato basil are always popular, plus special flavors like pumpkin or chocolate pasta are available seasonally. Mary Ann cant choose just one favorite but she does enjoy chilled sesame pasta and spinach linguine with crumbled blue cheese and artichokes. But really thats just what Im eating this month. Celebrate the glory of winter this holiday season by bringing some of the outdoors inside your home. Pinecones are an excellent resource for seasonal decorating. Natural pinecones placed upside-down in an urn make an easy centerpiece. Paint a pinecone gold or silver and tie with string to create a simple but striking ornament for the tree. A fun, kid-friendly holiday project involves a little felt, a couple of googly eyes, a medium-sized pinecone and a robust imagination. Put it all together with glue and you've constructed a pinecone Santa! Pinecones are also a wonderful addition to any swag or wreath. For a dash of color, look for winterberries. These small, bright red berries pop against the deep tone of winter greenery. Spice up your decor with a few sticks of cinnamon gathered together with twine.
