DEAR HOLY FAMILY PARISHIONERS: This is my annual vacation column about Mass & our faith. So, please keep read-ing! One of the great high-lights of a person’s or family’s year is vacation. We all have wonderful memories of going on a vacation with family & friends—-going to the amusement park, flying on an airplane, walking along the ocean shore, visiting our parents or siblings. It is a time to relax, have fun, sightsee, & enjoy good food. But, as I have said before many times, there is never a vacation from the Lord or from attending Mass! Never are we to take time away from the Lord. Never are we to get away from the “work” of our faith. Just the opposite. We are to relax & be with the Lord! And the main way we do that is by attending & celebrating Mass, taking that special time to be with the Lord Jesus—-hearing His Word, dining upon His Body & His Blood, & savoring His Presence. The Eucharist can bring us the refresh-ment we need in our spiritual lives. Doing that can bring back wonderful memories. Doing that can be fun & cause us to celebrate. Doing that is a way to see the light of Jesus Christ. Doing that will enable us to dine upon the richest of all foods. May each of us check our schedules to see if we have scheduled time with the Lord, never away from Him. One final reminder—-if you go on vacation, there are Catholic churches available close by. Call ahead & plan Mass time, just like you plan for other events. Or go online to the site listed below. See you in church! YOUR PASTOR, FATHER JOE

A NOTE FROM OUR DEACON: It can be a temptation for each of us to put our per-sonal value in what we are able to do and accomplish, at least I know that is true for me. Instead of letting God tell me who I am (His beloved son), I try and find my identity in the things and work that I do. I have nothing against work! In fact I believe that working hard and being faith-ful to our responsibilities is a way to love and serve God, but at the end of the day, we are defined by God’s love for us, not by what we accomplish. A Saint who shows us this in a real way is one you may have never heard of, Saint Anna Schaffer. Anna was born in Bavaria in the late 1800’s. Her father was a carpenter, but died young which led the family to live in extreme poverty. Anna had to drop out of school to work in a laundry, hoping to one day enter a religious community. Tragically, she was burnt badly in an accident at work, making her bedridden at the age of eighteen for the rest of her life. But there was no bitterness in Anna; instead, she chose to live for God in the circumstances and suffering life gave her. An abbot would bring her Jesus in The Eucharist daily, and she would knit clothes for others, write letters, and offer consoling words and prayers for townspeople who came to see her. She considered her suffering, knitting and letters to be the keys that would open her door to Heaven. She died of cancer at the age of 43 and was canonized a Saint by Pope Benedict in 2012, who said that Anna’s “suffering became a missionary service” in her life. To-day. thousands of miracles have been attributed to her intercession--all from a girl from a poor family who could not get out of bed; all because she had the courage to love Jesus in the concrete circumstances of her life.

“Thirsting for God?”: Do you know someone not bap-tized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition, who is thirsting for what it means to become Catho-lic? Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet received Confirmation & Communion? They may be thirsting too! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a place to ask questions and seek understand-ing. Weekly “no obligation” inquiry sessions start in mid-September. Please direct questions to Sr. Janet at [email protected] or 217-423-0240.

PLAN AHEAD FOR MASS DURING VACATION When you are away from home and do not know where or when Sunday Mass will be celebrated, go to:
