A FEW WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR
It has now been 10 weeks since we have last seen each other together in Church and as I write this, I
still have no idea when we will be able to return to Church. In his press conference on Monday, May
18th, Governor Cuomo pointed out that the re-opening of churches and places of worship fall into
“phase 4” of the re-opening of New York State. As we are all painfully aware, here in NYC we haven’t
even reached “phase 1” yet. So we are going to need to be a little more patient and open when it is safe
to do so. Here in the Diocese of Brooklyn we have already lost too many priests, deacons, religious
sisters, and hundreds of faithful Catholics in these last few months. We cannot risk losing anymore by
opening up prematurely.
In the meantime, as we look forward to the day we can re-open, Father Terry has graciously agreed
to “map-out” our church following the social distancing guidelines given to us by our governor, mayor
and the diocese. (We are blessed to have a priest who also happens to be an architect helping us with
weekday and Sunday Masses here at Saint Saviour). We will need to “rope-off” two pews in between
each pew we use for seating and then measure across six feet and place an “X” where a person may sit.
Father Kevin’s Church (Saint John the Evangelist) has pretty much the same seating capacity as Saint
Saviour (about 700 people), and after allowing for social distancing, his seating capacity was reduced
to 120 people. As a result, presuming our seating capacity turns out to be similar to that at Father
Kevin’s Church, we are going to run into a problem with regards to our 9:30am Family Mass since this
Mass has far more than 120 people attending. Hence, we are tentatively contemplating turning our
Parish Hall back into a lower church (temporarily) to accommodate the over-flow crowd. That
would mean we would have two Masses going on simultaneously at 9:30am – one upstairs and one
downstairs. The other two weekend Masses never reach more than 120 people so we should be ok.
I’ll share more details when the time gets closer to re-opening and we have clearer directives.
Remember, we will follow the directives of our governor and our bishop when the time comes for us to
re-open.
Now I would like to share with you a “Good News” story here at Saint Saviour. On Friday evening,
May 15th, our Diocesan television channel NET TV did a beautiful story on our very own Saint Saviour
High School. It chronicled how our principal, Mrs. Carolann Timpone, along with a handful of faculty
members, went to the homes of each of our 64 graduating Seniors on a Saturday morning and delivered
lawn signs congratulating them as the “Class of 2020.” So many of our Senior girls were shocked and
surprised to see their high school principal on a Saturday morning congratulating them and giving them
a token of their HS Graduation to be displayed in front of their house. We have one in front of the
Rectory and you can see the picture of the sign at the base of the outdoor cross. We are so very proud
of our Graduates, who have attained $16 million dollars in scholarships for college. I am hoping we
can put the link on our parish website, if not, you can google NET TV – Diocese of Brooklyn and
watch the segment for yourselves. Our little high school in Park Slope is truly something to be very
proud of right now!
Finally, please try your best to continue submitting your weekly offering envelopes if you are
financially able to do so. Simply drop your offering envelope in the Rectory Mailbox. With the
passing of each week, fewer and fewer donations are being brought in. I am so grateful to all our
parishioners who keep dropping their envelopes in the mailbox every week.
Please know that you are ALL in my daily prayers.
Father Frank
Here at Saint Saviour we wanted to thank all our
doctors, nurses, EMT’s and first responders for the
great job they’ve done during this challenging time
with a simple sign that now hangs on our window in
front of the Rectory.
Below the cross you’ll find the sign each of our High
School seniors received last week congratulating
them on their upcoming graduation.
Here’s a photo of our High School Seniors receiving
their graduation signs congratulating them on their
success. We are so grateful to our principal, Mrs.
Timpone, and our dedicated faculty for delivering
each of these signs to the homes of our seniors! We
are so proud of them!
