Youth Social Justice Award 2014

HYAC Core selected sisters Grace, Sunny, and Babs Hough as this year’s recipients for their dedication towards the comfort and inclusion of students from other countries at West Ottawa high school.

They created a club called You Are Home that meets after school once a week as an opportunity for students to receive homework help and share about their cultures in a comfortable and inclusive environment.

Having moved from Turkey a few years ago, the sisters saw the need for this club for English as a second language students and took action.

Social Services Committee

• Social Services is building a relationship with the Holland Rescue Mission in attempt to further our Pending Coffees project, which would provide coffee at local businesses for those in need.

• We are also working with the International Relations Commission on their annual Cultural Food Fair.

• Another one of our projects is turning downtown recycling bins into works of art and we are attempting to collaborate with local schools and their National Art Honor Societies as well as the Arts Council on this.

• Focused on our 2nd annual Run of the Mill 5k partnered with Windmill Island and Gazelle Sports.

• All of the money raised from sign ups and day of runners and walkers went to the Endowment fund to keep the mill turning.

• The day of the run, the mill started turning at 9:00am when the runners were sent off. This was the first time in 2 years that the mill had actually turned and made flour.

• Overall it was a HUGE success and the Recreation Committee, with help from many volunteers, raised over $4,799.
