Q1. The magnitude of the electrostatic force between two identical ions that are separated by a distance

of 5.0 X1010 m is 3.7 X109N. (a) What is the charge of each ion? (b) How many electrons are

“missing” from each ion (thus giving the ion its charge imbalance)?

Q2. Two identical conducting spheres, fixed in place, attract each other with an electrostatic force of

0.108 N when their center-to-center separation is 50.0 cm. The spheres are then connected by a thin

conducting wire. When the wire is removed, the spheres repel each other with an electrostatic force of

0.0360 N. Of the initial charges on the spheres, with a positive net charge, what was (a) the negative

charge on one of them and (b) the positive charge on the other?

Q3. Particle 1 of charge +1.0 µC and particle 2 of charge -3.0 µC are held at separation L= 10.0 cm on

an x axis. If a particle 3 of unknown charge q3 is to be located such that the net electrostatic force on it

from particles 1 and 2 is zero, what must be the (a) x and (b) y coordinates of particle 3?

Q4. The magnitude of the electrostatic force between two identical ions that are separated by a distance

of 5.0x10-10 m is 3.7x10-9 N. (a) What is the charge of each ion? (b) How many electrons are “missing”

from each ion (thus giving the ion its charge imbalance)?

Q5. Calculate the number of coulombs of positive charge in 250 cm3 of (neutral) water.

Q6. An electric dipole consisting of charges of magnitude 1.50 nC separated by 6.20 mm is in an

electric field of strength 1100N/C. What are (a) the magnitude of the electric dipole moment and (b) the

difference between the potential energies for dipole orientations parallel and antiparallel to E?

Q7. Figure shows two charged particles on an x axis: -q =-3.20 x 10_19 C at x =-3.00 m and q = 3.20 x

10_19 C at x =3.00 m. What are the (a) magnitude and (b) direction (relative to the positive direction of

the x axis) of the net electric field produced at point P at y = 4.00 m?

Q8. An electric dipole consisting of charges of magnitude 1.50 nC separated by 6.20 µm is in an

electric field of strength 1100 N/C. What are (a) the magnitude of the electric dipole moment and (b)

the difference between the potential energies for dipole orientations parallel and antiparallel to E?

Q9.How much work is required to turn an electric dipole 180o in a uniform electric field of magnitude

E =46.0 N/C if the dipole moment has a magnitude of p =3.02 x 10-25 Cm and the initial angle is 64o?

Q10. Space vehicles traveling through Earth’s radiation belts can intercept a significant number of

electrons. The resulting charge build up can damage electronic components and disrupt operations.

Suppose a spherical metal satellite 1.3 m in diameter accumulates 2.4 µC of charge in one orbital

revolution. (a) Find the resulting surface charge density. (b) Calculate the magnitude of the electric

field just outside the surface of the satellite, due to the surface charge.

Q11. An isolated conductor has net charge 10x 10-6 C and a cavity with a particle of charge q = 3.0 x

10-6 C. What is the charge on (a) the cavity wall and (b) the outer surface?

Q12. The electric field in a region of space has the components Ey = Ez 0 and Ex =(4.00 N/C)x. Point

A is on the y axis at y =3.00 m, and point B is on the x axis at x 4.00 m. What is the potential difference

VB -VA?

Q13. In Fig. what is the net electric potential at point P due to the four particles if V = 0 at infinity, q=

5.00 fC, and d= 4.00 cm?

Q14. The capacitors in Figure are initially uncharged. The capacitances are C1 =4.0 µF, C2 =8.0 µF,

and C3 =12 µF, and the battery’s potential difference is V =12 V. When switch S is closed, how many

electrons travel through (a) point a, (b) point b, (c) point c, and (d) point d? In the figure, do the

electrons travel up or down through (e) point b and (f) point c?

Q15. Figure 25-48 shows a parallel-plate capacitor with a plate area A = 7.89 cm2 and plate separation d

= 4.62 mm. The top half of the gap is filled with material of dielectric constant k1 =11.0; the bottom

half is filled with material of dielectric constant k2 =12.0. What is the capacitance?
