We deliver superior products and services to our customers. We support free and fair competition, and we comply with relevant competition laws.

We take due care in the selection of our business partners. We comply with export controls and anti-money laundry regulations.

We treat our suppliers fairly. We expect our suppliers to strive towards the same high standards for business conduct and prod-uct quality that we have set for ourselves.

We act with integrity and honesty at all times. We will declare potential conflicts of interest. We will protect the company’s assets, and will not use our position at HOERBIGER for personal gain.

We take pride in HOERBIGER. We protect the good reputation of our company as well as the image and the value of the HOERBIGER brand.

We accept the challenges of ethical con-duct. In critical situations we will support each other to keep our commitments to move HOERBIGER forward.

achieving sales of 1,088.2 million euros and income before taxes of 114.8 million euros in 2014, the HoerBIger group closed out another very successful fiscal year. compared to 1,052.3 million euros in sales and 113.6 million euros in net operating income in 2013, HoerBIger grew by just over 3.4 percent in sales and 1.1 percent in earnings.

Notably in China, one of the most important sales markets of the HOERBIGER Group, industry’s propensity to invest was clearly more restrained than in the years before.

The necessary measures taken by the Chinese administration to prevent corruption and personal gain have prompted HOERBIGER customers to proceed with extreme caution, and to defer even justified investments and much-needed service work.

In Eastern Europe, the crisis in Ukraine and the deterioration in currency associated with the economic sanctions against Russia are posing an increasing burden on HOERBIGER’s sales there.

The HOERBIGER Group also continues to be confronted with foreign exchange risks in several Latin American countries that are important for the gas industry.

It remains to be seen to what extent the continued development of crude oil prices will influence HOERBIGER’s business in the coming years. While we already sensed considerable uncertainty in the oil, gas, and process industries in 2014, we have not yet suffered any significant slumps in sales.

The continued uncertain trend in oil and natural gas prices, the difficult political and economic situation in Eastern Europe, and the continued increasing uncertainty in the development of key currencies and the related risks will again present challenges for the Group in 2015.

“We oPeRate In MaRkets WItHGReat oPPoRtUnItIes—bUt also WItH RIsks.”

This performance by our employees, management, the Corporate Functions and the Executive Board is all the more commendable considering that the economic and political conditions in several strategically important markets of the HOERBIGER Group developed unfavorably in 2014, rather than improved.

In light of the recent successful selection of successors for the top positions of the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology and the Serial Compressors Business Segment, the Board of Directors emphatically supports Corporate Human Resources’ medium-term goal for the Group to fill 70 percent of all managerial vacancies with talented junior professionals from within the HOERBIGER Group.

In July 2014, we successfully completed the internal change in leadership in the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology. Dr. Siegmar Schlagau transferred management of the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology to Thomas Englmann, and effective July 1, the Board of Directors also appointed Thomas Englmann as a member of the Executive Board.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to express the Board’s immense appreciation for Dr. Siegmar Schlagau’s achievements and thank him for the strategic realignment of HOERBIGER Drive Technology implemented under his leadership, which entailed the taxing shift of the Business Unit’s focus towards synchronizers. This reorientation proved to be an important and absolutely correct step for the technological and economic development of HOERBIGER Drive Technology.

We were pleased to observe the positive impact that the internal successor selection, which the Board of Directors unanimously supported, has had on the current development of the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology, and notably on employee engagement as a whole.

We note with equal pleasure the likewise successful internal succession planning implemented in the Serial Compressors Business Segment—formerly managed by Thomas Englmann—in the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology. Here, Oliver Gratzl seamlessly forged ahead with the work of his predecessor.

foreword of tHe Board of dIrectors

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish that all of us in the HOERBIGER Group will achieve the same good results in 2015 as we did in 2014.

In addition to the extremely important innovation projects and growth initiatives, significant contributions to this success came from the internal STREAM project triggered by the Executive Board and the related initiatives taken by all Strategic Business Units to improve and standardize technologies and processes in Production, Sales, and Logistics.

Our strategic objectives for the coming years—developed and adopted together with the Executive Board—along with the strong dedication, exceptional commitment to perform, and the talent and skills of our senior managers and employees provide an excellent foundation for the HOERBIGER Group to continue to grow in the future, in keeping with our ambitious goals.

We thank all of you, the 7,004 employees working for HOERBIGER worldwide. Our thanks go to you above all for your exceptional commitment, which you demonstrate every day with extraordinary successes and great team performance, and for the close bond you have with HOERBIGER, which you again expressed in our “Voice for Excellence” survey in the 2014 fiscal year.

The HOERBIGER brand is as good and as strong as our senior managers and employees. We are especially proud of the high engagement with which you, day by day, apply yourself to the strategic goals of our Group—around the world, under high competitive pressure, and with high personal commitment.

The Board of Directors is very well aware that we, as a partner to the oil and gas industry, must be available to our customers and have a local presence even in politically and economically unstable regions.

We also know how difficult it is in the mechanical and plant engineering industry to acquire new customers and achieve new fields of application for our innovative technologies, despite compelling unique selling propositions.

We have the utmost respect for the unwaning performance of our employees in Development and Sales in our automotive segments. Every cent matters here, and neither superior technologies, nor the best preparation for calls for bids and price negotiations, always lead to success in the end.

In close coordination with the CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board, Dr. Martin Komischke, in November 2014 the Board of Directors appointed Charles Friess, Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Executive Board, as deputy CEO. With this regulation taking effect on January 1, 2015, we would like to express our tremendous appreciation and strong confidence in the previous long-standing and very successful work of Charles Friess as CFO. At the same time, this step expresses our gratitude for his excellent working relationship with the CEO, the Executive Board and the Board of Directors.

In 2014, the Board of Directors very strongly supported the implementation of the HOERBIGER Group’s Code of Conduct, which was adopted at the end of 2013. The intensive communication measures taken since by the Executive Board in terms of updating and training the senior managers and decision-makers worldwide are being received very positively among our customers and business partners and are greatly appreciated.

As Assistant to the Managing Director and all-round accounting, HR and logistics talent, Mariana Sturm played a key role from the start in the acquisition of TurboTech Engenharia LTDA., Salvador (Bahia), Brazil. The process culminated with the successful purchase of the flourishing company by HOERBIGER.

Closing of ranks among friends: HOERBIGER and TurboTech have been partners for years. In Latin America, the two companies collectively handle service contracts in the turbomachinery business.

With informational events and through personal dialog, Mariana Sturm ensured that the staff was always up-to-date throughout the entire process. Her efforts greatly aided the successful integration of TurboTech Engenharia into the HOERBIGER Group.

Annie Zhou is enthusiastic about technology, so she decided to study mechanical engineering in Shanghai, China. Working in Wuxi as a Valve Automation Sales Engineer, she is in charge of the market launch of HOERBIGER electrohydraulic valve actuators in China. At the Valve World international trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany, Annie Zhou and her colleague Gary Xy met a valve manufacturer from China. The delegation is interested in the safety functions of the HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuators, specifically for a major steel producer. The valve actuator is intended to help safely operate a blast furnace gas line.

Annie Zhou and Gary Xu recognize the opportunity. The compel-ling unique features of the TriVAXTM flex—power density, speed, and safety—are a perfect fit. The team managed to enter into its first business transaction in China. Dedication that creates enthusiasm.

engagement73 percent engagement! The team of the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology achieved a terrific level. In 2014, the first TriVAXTM valve actuator was sold to a steel mill in China. That too was terrific!

In Bolesławiec, Poland, the Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division produces hydraulic drives for convertible tops and pneumatic gearshift support systems for commercial vehicles. Every new customer project that is turned into full-scale production starts with Marcin Baranski.

Marcin Baranski has all the hallmarks of young professionals: an excellent education, diverse practical experience, stays abroad— above all, however, a refreshingly uncomplicated way of tackling things. Working in Prototype Development, he translates the design drawings he receives from the Development Department in Schongau, Germany, into program parameters for 4-axis CNC milling machines. The first prototypes are returned to Schongau for functional and noise testing. Marcin Baranski oversees the prototypes from start-up to production. When the production machines run smoothly, he has already moved on to the next customer project.

“excellence & focUs Is noW folloWeD bY oUR MIssIon excellence & GRoWtH.”

2014 was another very good year for the HOERBIGER Group. We are pleased to report sales growth of just over 3.4 percent and an improvement in net operating income of 1.1 percent—continuing our favorable growth trend.

The Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology again posted strong sales and earnings. In 2014, it reported the best annual financial statement ever, which is attributable to a large degree to the excellent OEM business in all segments.

We are particularly pleased with the excellent performance of the Engine Solutions Business Segment in 2014. Senior managers and employees kept their promise and created a powerful new pillar within the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology, based on a foundation of innovative control, injection and ignition technologies for industrial engines.

In light of its global nature and profitability, the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology remains the backbone of the HOERBIGER Group. At the same time, we must continue to work on repositioning the Service Division based on the guidelines of the revised strategy we have adopted.

The development in the Automotive Comfort System Business Division was also very positive. This Business Division has been consistently profitable again since the end of 2012, and in 2014 was able to acquire significant new orders in Europe and North America.

In 2014, the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology benefited from the growth of the new product lines in the Business Divisions Valve Automation and Compact Motion Technology. Our newly developed and powerful electrohydraulic actuators for the drive systems of industrial valves and press brakes are increasingly well-received in the market.

The development of the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology was outstanding. By focusing on synchronizers, we initiated the necessary strategic steps at the ideal time.

Moreover, appointing Thomas Englmann Chief Executive Officer of the Strategic Business Unit was excellent succession planning for the leadership of HOERBIGER Drive Technology. Through his dedicated management of the Development and Sales teams, he acquired several major contracts from the international automotive industry in 2014, which are important for the future. Additionally, the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology considerably advanced the strategically important localization of production in China.

18

In 2010, we launched the EXCELLENCE & Focus initiative. In previous years, priority had been given to strategically sustainable business segments that met our stability criteria.

We have strategically realigned our Group. I am convinced that our approach was better and more purposeful than that of many other market players. This is one reason why today we have a future-oriented portfolio that strategically is very strong. This applies both with respect to our core competencies, technologies and products, and to the innovations and business ideas promoted by HOERBIGER over the past years.

Our senior managers and all our employees deserve our respect for the steadfastness, meticulousness and consistency with which they are translating these innovations and new business ideas into lastingly successful business models. I am convinced that we have truly prepared to the fullest for the coming years, both strategically and operationally. This is our shared contribution to Mission Excellence & Growth.

ceo statement

HOERBIGER intensively supports personal development initiatives and provides dedicated employees with appealing development options customized to their talents. In addition to internal continuing education initiatives, we are increasingly engaged in working with universities and colleges. For some time now, for example, we have provided financial assistance to the JKU HOERBIGER Research Institute for Smart Actuators at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. In 2014 we also formed a new cooperation with Kempten University in Germany.

Our robust business processes are as important as the dedication and capabilities of our team. This prompted us to institute Project STREAM. The goal of STREAM is to systematically optimize and standardize the flows and processes that are essential for our business, in all Strategic Business Units.

Our objectives tied to Project STREAM—standardizing, simplifying and cost-optimizing our business processes—will impact the entire organization. The success of STREAM is essential for the successful implementation of a cross-divisional IT platform in the Group.

If we do everything right with STREAM, we will be able to utilize more synergies than ever before. STREAM is the prerequisite for maximum organizational performance—or in other words, for the Group’s performance capability going forward.

In Service, we are in the process of creating the conditions for new growth. New business segments, such as the extremely successful Wellhead Compression Initiative, will contribute to growth in Service, as will new business models related to traditional services for reciprocating compressors, engines and turbines.

Our activities in Business Development are playing another important role in ensuring that we are not only ready for the future, but maintain a steadfast preparedness in the long term. We are increasingly exploring interesting acquisition targets that will support and expedite our organic growth.

The evolution of Human Resources into a Business Partner, and the attendant new initiatives, are necessary to offer our employees a professional environment with attractive personal development opportunities long-term. Our employees thanked us for these actions in 2014 with outstanding engagement values. When it comes to engagement, we are now one of the benchmarks in the industry.

“We aRe WoRkInG WItH a stRonG anD Well-conDItIoneD InteRnatIonal teaM.”

In 2014, we again zeroed in on strengthening our product portfolio, our capital base, and our liquidity. Our earnings and our high equity ratio, which is clearly above the target of 45 percent set out in our stability criteria, provide good starting points for the road ahead.

We achieved our targets, strategically, operationally and also with respect to our profitability. Now we are determined to set the course for stronger growth. We are gaining traction again and transitioning from “focusing and strengthening” mode to “growth and acceleration” mode.

We must invest our energy primarily and with particular intensity in the implementation of our initiatives. This is not business as usual. Many initiatives require a mind shift in the organization.

As a technology company, HOERBIGER will continue to be driven by innovations—but based on reasoned marketing strategies, and with products and services that offer unique selling propositions in keeping with our customers’ requirements and needs. With this approach we will make a lasting contribution to the added value of our customers’ businesses.

We have recognized that we must explore, much more systematically than in the past, the opportunities that the market offers us. We must act on catalysts from the market to develop new product and business ideas, and strategically translate these into adequate business models.

To do so, we need a dedicated Sales team that, based on optimized processes, takes collaboration with our customers to a new level. The best example is our close, successful partnership over many years with a leading global manufacturer of high-speed reciprocating compressors. Through a shared merchandise management system, we make a significant contribution to our customer’s added value.

HOERBIGER has excellent conditions for growth and sustainable corporate success in all Business Segments.

One example is D’BLUE, our very successful partnership with L’Orange for the joint distribution of engine components in Asia. This partnership is crucial to ensure the outstanding development of the Engine Solutions Business Segment.

The HOERBIGER Group will continue to encounter variables and risks in 2015. The oil price trend, the continued politically unstable situation in Eastern Europe, and rising foreign exchange risks in South America, most notably Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil, are presenting us with new challenges. Great opportunities still abound in the Asian markets, particularly China, India and Korea. Opportunities may also arise from potential changes, such as Iran re-entering the international oil and gas business.

We also still have important opportunities for improvement in our own company. We must above all continue to place our innovative products and services more successfully with our customers, such as in the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology, but also in the Service Division of the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology.

I am convinced that challenges make us strong. After all, our employees impart identity and character to HOERBIGER as a brand, as an innovation and technology leader, as an attractive employer, and as a global industrial group. We are sustained by our Corporate Values: Pioneering Spirit, Courage, Closeness and Fairness.

As a leading component manufacturer in the compressor industry, we are able to offer our customers innovative valves, rings and packings as well as high-precision control systems. These are solutions that not only contribute to our customers’ added value, but also set standards in terms of performance, efficiency, and environmental compliance.

Intelligently designed components for air compressors help us to lower the diesel consumption of trucks. As a leading manufacturer of control, ignition and injection systems for large industrial engines, we are no longer merely a technology leader, but increasingly a technology catalyst.

As an innovative hydraulics specialist, we set new standards for maximum power density in the smallest of spaces with new actuators for industrial valves and press brakes. As a technology partner to the automotive industry, our synchronizers for traditional manual and dual-clutch transmissions play a decisive role in the success of new generations of transmissions.

HOERBIGER operates in many regions of the world where legally compliant and ethical conduct in business repeatedly represents particular challenges. We have taken a clear stance through our Code of Conduct.

In 2014, we systematically incorporated the necessary compliance aspects in all our corporate processes: from development of the strategy, to employee recruitment, to Sales, Production and Logistics. I am very grateful that our employees fully support our concern to make compliance an integral part of the day-to-day business.

Ostensibly it may appear to be an economic disadvantage to turn down the occasional contract for compliance reasons. However, I am deeply convinced that precisely this consistency in our conduct will bring us competitive advantages in the long term. I am confident that we are on the right track. We will continue our compliance efforts unabated.

It is HOERBIGER’s distinct corporate structure, with its family business nature and the HOERBIGER Foundation as the majority shareholder, that allows us to take a long-term view of our strategic objectives, with a corporate portfolio aligned with our own specific stability criteria. With approximately 50 percent of sales revenue coming from the oil, gas, and process industries, and approximately one third from the automotive industry, it is ultimately this broadly diversified portfolio, focusing on different business segments, that gives our Group the necessary stability.

One of the major challenges for the HOERBIGER Group continues to be the choppy waters that characterize some emerging markets, and consequently several growth markets that are of strategic importance for the development of the Group.

In South America, Russia, and Ukraine we presently face very serious political risks. Foreign exchange risks are inherently tied to political instability. In 2014, they played a role in HOERBIGER generating considerably less revenue in Latin America and Eastern Europe than originally budgeted.

In contrast, following an unfavorable first half of the year, the exchange rate of the dollar to the euro helped us achieve our growth targets in the second half. Despite these challenges, which are to be expected in a global market environment, I personally see tremendous opportunities for additional growth in the near future. One of these relates to the lifting of the embargo on Iran, a region that continues to hold significant oil and gas reserves.

Examples of the performance culture practiced at HOERBIGER can be found at the corporate level as well as in the Strategic Business Units and Business Divisions. People who stand out with their extraordinary commitment and excep-tional achievements can be found everywhere at HOERBIGER.

As of December 31, 2014, the HOERBIGER Group had a worldwide staff of 7,004—285 employees more than in the previous year. This equates to an increase of 4.3 percent in the Group.

The Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology had 4,471 employees, the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology 1,473, the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology 383, and the Automotive Comfort System Business Division 412. A total of 265 employees worked in corporate functions.

A very pleasing trend is that our employees were more loyal to the company in 2014 than ever before. At 9.76 percent, turnover in 2014 was considerably lower than in 2013 (13.2 percent).

voIce foR excellence—We Want to knoW HoWWe can IMPRove

HOERBIGER launched the worldwide “Voice for Excellence” employee survey in 2011. As one of the supporting elements of a Group-wide feedback culture, it measures the level of enga-gement of all employees, making it an important indicator of the degree with which they identify with their company.

We measure employee engagement based on the “Say-stay-strive” model. It analyzes how posi-tively employees talk about their company in conversations (“say”), how loyal they are to the company (“stay”), and how motivated they feel to exert extra effort for their company (“strive”).

The results of the 2014 “Voice for Excellence” survey continue the positive trend of the last few years: participation in the survey and employee engagement numbers at HOERBIGER have both reached new record levels.

Across the company as a whole, employee enga-gement rose five points from 58 percent to 63 percent. This figure is extraordinary, clearly sur-passing the average of all companies worldwide (61 percent). HOERBIGER’s employee engage-ment also exceeds the average of industrial firms (58 percent).

We want to improve further by 2016 and have set our target for consistent employee engagement at 65 percent or higher. The excellent response rate of 85 percent to our employee survey demonst-rates that employees have accepted the “Voice for Excellence” initiative as an important feed-back tool. In 2014, a total of 5,522 employees completed the questionnaire. The evaluation of all survey results showed that senior managers and employees collectively defined 528 “Voice for Excellence” initiatives in the HOERBIGER Group. These address areas where the employees identified room for improvement in their entities.

bUsIness PaRtneRHUMan ResoURces In 2014, Corporate Human Resources—HR—worked hard to grow even further into the role of an indispensable Business Partner for business operations. Qualified HR employees assume an advisory role and actively participate in the development of strategies and business models and in the expansion of business activities.

With this, HOERBIGER HR employees fulfill a role that is more comprehensive and sweeping than in many other companies. HR has more extensive and active involvement in the operational business—a true opportunity for ambitious, entrepreneurially minded HR specialists who want to make a difference.

We assUMe ResPonsIbIlItY

Being a Business Partner means sharing risks and opportunities with the business side out of conviction and with passion. All activities are

geared toward creating economic value. This can only be accomplished if HR Business Partners assume and share responsibility.

Given their outstanding technical and methodological expertise, HR Business Partners are called upon to bring about improvements and, where necessary and justified, criticize shortcomings. This has created an entirely different role for HR at HOERBIGER compared to traditional, administratively oriented Human Resources organizations. At HOERBIGER, HR is a strategically minded driving force for change.

HR Business Partners secure the company’s economic success by combining the interests of people and the interests of the company in the best possible way, and in the process repeatedly uncover interesting new solutions.

“As a Business Partner, Human Resources plays an active role in the development of new business models and in the expansion of our business activities. For operational management, we are partners on an equal footing.”

3c MetHoD—confIDentlY ManaGInG cHanGe PRocessesHOERBIGER plans to pursue consistent growth in the years ahead. To achieve our growth targets we will have to implement a number of change

projects. The 3C Change Management Method developed by HOERBIGER in 2014 will help in the process: Change, Culture, Consistency.

3C answers the questions not only of what will be changed, but also how this can be done suc-cessfully in keeping with the corporate strategy. Another benefit is that 3C is equally suited to both small and complex projects. The method can be applied in its entirety, or in parts, in the manner of a modular system.

HOERBIGER rolled out the 3C Method as part of the training schedule in the Career Drive Program and the Business Leadership Program. In 2014, it was integrated into the kick-off event for the Harvard Breakthrough Leadership Program.

Worldwide, more than 300 attendees of the Career Drive Program became acquainted with the 3C Method in 2014. By the end of the year, over 390 candidates learned about the 3C Method in leadership development programs.

Murilo Cardoso (44) learned all about the HOERBIGER 3C Method during the 2013 Business Leadership Program. With the knowledge he gained, he started and successfully concluded a demanding change project in the finance organization of Latin America service area.

One of the key challenges was to integrate a variety of stakeholders at the national, regional and Strategic Business Unit levels to increase the efficiency of the finance organization in Latin America.

Today, the finance organization of Service Latin America is in its best position ever. The quality of the annual financial statement improved, because the figures are based on systematically

audited data. Thanks to Cardoso’s initiative, the finance organization in Latin America is now working on more complex projects.

The Business Leadership Program lasts eight months and encompasses three modules: “Being Management”, “Driving Simplicity and Innovation,” and “Leading Culture & Change.” In three workshops, participants intensively explore topics that qualify them for advanced managerial positions. These include corporate strategy, performance measurement, decision-making preparations, innovation management, and change management.

A key element of the Business Leadership Program is presentations to the Executive Board, during which the participants showcase their results from the workshops.

The first graduates of the Business Leadership Program assumed advanced management posi-tions in 2014—with consistently positive lea-dership success and outstanding feedback from our employees.

HOERBIGER has developed numerous initiatives and programs since 2011 with the goal of effectively boosting employee engagement. These measures center around the people of HOERBIGER because it is they, who contribute to the company’s growth through their ideas, skills and engagement.

In 2014, 85 percent of all HOERBIGER employees participated in the “Voice for Excellence” survey. Approximately two-thirds— 63 percent—considered themselves “engaged.” They stand behind our company with great motivation, pride and passion.

This outstanding result makes HOERBIGER a benchmark by international standards in terms of being an attractive employer. As our employees’ feedback demonstrates, HOERBIGER is a company where performance and personal commitment pay off, where people from different origins enjoy working together, and which they gladly recommend to friends and acquaintances.

The first important milestone toward becoming an even more modern and attractive employer was the decision by the Executive Board in 2011 to make the continuous promotion of employee engagement one of the Group’s most important goals.

We have since launched many initiatives and accomplished a great deal:

In 2012, the first “Voice for Excellence” survey was conducted through the Group. The results and feedback were available online via the “Voice for Excellence Globe” for all employees to review. The action plans that were developed based on the survey results were transparent for everyone worldwide.

The introduction of 360-degree feedback for senior managers in 2013 was followed by the development of the “Excellence Behaviors Circle.” This outlines the behavior patterns that

shape the culture of HOERBIGER and assigns them to one of four areas: Product Excellence, Service Excellence, Management Excellence, and Operational Excellence.

Another highlight in 2013 was the launch of the online learning platform “Always Learn.” This allows all HOERBIGER employees to take advantage of customized training and continuing education programs—anywhere and at any time. During the 2013 HR Roadshow, Human Resources—in its new role as Business Partner—for the first time explained to more than 250 international executives the goals and initiatives that are planned to promote performance and engagement in the HOERBIGER Group.

Important milestones in 2014 included the introduction of the new Performance Management System for more than 3,300 employees, and the development of the Reward for Excellence bonus program for senior managers.

More than 500 employees who were designated as potential managerial candidates in the Group’s Succession Plan in 2014 attended at least one of four programs at the HOERBIGER Leadership School that was launched in 2013. During the Roadshow, the HR team shared the company’s strategy as well as programs designed by Human Resources to support the implementation of the corporate strategy with more than 280 senior managers.

Around the world, the HOERBIGER brand is synonymous with corporate performance through outstanding unique selling propositions. Our products—components, systems and services—are performance-defining. In compressors, industrial engines, automobile transmissions, and multifaceted mechanical and plant engineering applications, they are decisive when it comes to efficiency and effectiveness, reliability and environmental compatibility.

Performance-defining components, systems and services from HOERBIGER make a lasting contribution to our customers’ added value, from the OEM to the end user. They form the core and starting point of our business model.

Laying the foundation for today’s Group, the low-mass steel plate valve invented by Hanns Hörbiger in 1895 was one such performance-defining component. It replaced the leather flap valves used previously for the compression of air and gas. Hanns Hörbiger not only made it possible for the iron and steel industry to develop, but also enabled the industrialization of piezochemistry.

Today, our portfolio encompasses a broad spectrum of performance-defining components for compressors, pumps and turbines: innovative high-performance custom valves for special applications, together with proven standard valves, hydraulic and electric actuators, control systems and controllers, rings and packings.

… for compressor manufacturers and end users The technical properties of compressor valves decisively influence the performance of reciprocating compressors. To this day, HOERBIGER compressor valves are the performance-defining component in countless reciprocating compressors that are used in the oil, gas, and process industries, the food industry, in refrigeration and air-conditioning, commercial vehicles, and many other commercial and private applications.

Recent developments in valve technology include the HOERBIGER CP valve for the compression of industrial air and light technical gases, the HOERBIGER CP PowerPEEKTM valve for more demanding applications in the natural gas and process industries, the HOERBIGER XP valve for high-performance compressors in the process industry, and an economically attractive portfolio of standardized RN valves for industrial and breathing air applications.

HOERBIGER revolutionized the stepless capacity control of reciprocating compressors with the HOERBIGER HydroCOM system, and now also offers an electric control system: HOERBIGER eHydroCOM.

Starting from the core competencies in valves, rings and packings, control and monitoring systems, the portfolio of performance-defining components for rotary equipment is continually refined. A current example is the HOERBIGER XperSEAL system, a one-of-a-kind piston rod packing for reciprocating compressors when absolutely gas-tight sealing is essential.

… for customers In need of powerful IndustrIal valvesThe international oil, gas, and process industry is an important HOERBIGER customer for more than just compressor components. HOERBIGER piezoelectric control elements have also been used by the thousands in valve actuators for more than two decades as the performance-determining component of positioners. Based on this foundation, HOERBIGER has developed innovative positioner modules and valve actuators in-house. These new HOERBIGER positioner modules and the powerful electrohydraulic valve actuators from the HOERBIGER TriVAXTM

“Our performance claim and our strategy based on the unique selling propositions of performance-defining components form the basis for implementing our operational corporate goals.”

Performance-defining components are the technological foundation for HOERBIGER’s products, systems and services. Through their unique selling propositions, we provide a lasting contribution to the added value of our customers.

It is from our high corporate ambition associated with this performance commitment that we derive the vision of the HOERBIGER Group: We set standards.

market posItIonIngHOERBIGER has the objective of being first or second in the niche markets in which the company is strategically represented. Our products and services must therefore offer unique selling propositions that clearly distinguish them from the competition.

tecHnologYWhen developing new products and services, HOERBIGER focuses on the core competencies of the Strategic Business Units: fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and gas dynamics in compression and engine technology; hydraulics, pneumatics, and piezo technology in automation technology; and metal forming and fine blanking technology in drive technology. They also encompass electronics, sensors and software.

In order for HOERBIGER to continue to set standards for products and services in the long run, we must be a step ahead of the competition, both in the development and in the application of our products, with advantageous selling points.

self-relIanceHOERBIGER avoids becoming dependent upon a single customer or supplier. This is not due to lack of confidence in our business partners. On the contrary: we value reliability and long-term, close relationships based on trust.

However, HOERBIGER consistently makes sure that relationships with customers and suppliers alike are based on several pillars. The Group has a mandate to remain self-reliant. No less importantly, the corporation must be able to make business decisions autonomously. An indication of our financial independence is the Group’s high equity ratio.

profItaBIlItYEach entity in the HOERBIGER Group must be able to support itself. Senior managers are responsible for the long-term profitability of their entities. The criterion is the EBIT margin, the operating income in proportion to sales. In the HOERBIGER Group, this is required to be at least 10 percent. An EBIT margin of more than 10 percent is necessary to maintain our position in volatile markets that are subject to increasingly fierce competition. This margin supports our internal and external financing and so ensures that we can generate growth.

Our high EBIT margin target additionally supports our efforts to build and develop the strong equity capital base that is important for us, so that HOERBIGER is well-protected even during temporary economic crises. As a result, it also protects our most important goal of establishing long-term relationships with our customers and business partners based on trust.

Our business model centers around performance-defining components, systems, and services that through their unique selling propositions make a lasting contribution to our customers’ added value. Based on this strategic orientation, it is our goal to establish ourselves as number one or number two in niche markets—that, while small or mid-sized, are economically very attractive in the medium and long terms—by pursuing leading technology and consistently promising business ideas.

In 2010, the HOERBIGER Group defined a new mission for itself with the EXCELLENCE & Focus initiative. At the same time, the strategic course was set for a realignment of the corporate portfolio and the Group’s emphasis on growth markets that are successful in the long run.

Since systematically focusing on the strategically more future-oriented core business as a result of the EXCELLENCE & Focus initiative, the HOERBIGER Group has grown an average of 6.5 percent per year. It has developed significantly more dynamically than the global market, which has grown at 4 to 4.5 percent on average.

This continued positive trend is sustained by additional innovation initiatives and an excellent innovation pipeline that remains well-stocked, and also by numerous market-driven growth projects.

We anticipate crucial growth momentum to come in particular from the emerging markets in Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

In the saturated markets of Europe and North America—the mature markets—HOERBIGER is working to gain additional market share through innovative products and services. Here, developments that are clearly superior to the competition in terms of performance capability, reliability, or efficiency are a top priority.

A second and equally important future-oriented initiative of the Group is the optimization and standardization of our global business processes.

STREAM is a Group-wide project whose objective is to establish a standardized, and consequently efficient, process landscape throughout the HOERBIGER world—featuring a lean and flexible IT architecture that supports these global processes.

The establishment of automated business processes will considerably simplify our collaboration with customers and business partners. Task-based, redesigned IT work environments will support value-adding activities in the future and avoid superfluous work steps.

The Executive Board and Board of Directors approved the STREAM program in November and December 2014.

During the first implementation phase, the STREAM project team will work closely with the Strategic Business Units and Business Divisions, as well as all corporate functions, to identify the business processes that are essential for the success of our operational business and to develop the appropriate standardized IT architecture. In a second implementation phase, the new business processes will be implemented in all HOERBIGER entities worldwide.

The goal of STREAM is to translate any weaknesses that still exist into strengths: local best practices, which previously made it impossible to introduce global processes, will be analyzed and assessed by specially appointed process teams. Best practices that offer advantages for all employees will become part of the new process landscape, thereby strengthening the efficiency of HOERBIGER.

The global operating process teams will develop the new business processes based on typical HOERBIGER business practices in the series production business, the order-based business, and in Service. Experienced external partners will support them in this effort.

Translating STREAM into success will once again require our employees to scrutinize proven processes to promote change and growth. And when it comes to thinking outside the box, HOERBIGER has always done very well.

In the USA in particular, domestically produced natural gas and oil are increasingly displacing coal and imported crude oil as the primary source of energy. According to forecasts, 65 percent of primary energy consumption in the USA is expected to be covered by natural gas in the medium term.

This trend is driven by the cost-efficient availability of shale gas compared to other energy sources. Additionally, highly valuable liquid hydrocarbons are recovered in the production of gas. They are an important feedstock for the US chemical industry.

Comparatively low investment costs for converting energy generation to natural gas is another driver. Public utility companies and industry, plus an

increasing number of private consumers, are taking advantage of this combination to convert to clean forms of energy.

Long-term, global energy demand will continue to be satisfied by fossil fuels. Their share in 2012 was 86 percent and this is expected to remain as high as 81 percent by 2035. While today the majority of demand for energy is still covered by oil and coal, natural gas will account for more than one third of primary energy sources by 2035.

oem dIvIsIonCompressor Solutions Business SegmentThe oil, gas, and process industries have traditionally been one of the sales markets of the Strategic Business Unit Compression

Technology. This market segment covers scores of large reciprocating compressors operating in gas compression worldwide. For decades, developments from the Compressor Solutions Business Segment have ensured HOERBIGER’s position as an innovation and technology leader when it comes to performance-defining key components for these extremely long-lived machines. The Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology sets standards in this Business Segment with durable valves, highly efficient control units, rings and packings—and has done so for 120 years, all over the world.

Another important field of activity in the Compressor Solutions Segment is wear-free explosion protection valves, which are used as safety valves, notably in large-bore engines and compressors. More recent uses here include protective applications for explosive dusts, and for the intake and exhaust systems of gas and dual-fuel engines.

Serial Compressors Business SegmentReciprocating compressors are also used in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems as well as in the automobile industry, primarily as refrigeration or brake units. The Serial Compressors Business Segment develops valve heads and reed valves for these compact compressors. The Serial Compressors Segment additionally supplies control components to the rotary compressors market.

In every respect, excellence is the common element shared by all the services that HOERBIGER delivers to customers of the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology—from developing a performance-increasing component, through the partnership with OEMs, to first-class services for compressor, natural gas engine and turbine operators.

The close partnership with OEM customers and end users is a strong driver for new ideas and business models.

One very successful example is the REE initiative, a comprehensive audit program aimed at optimizing the reliability, efficiency and environmental soundness of compressors.

Globally standardized HOERBIGER processes, meanwhile, help Production, Sales and Service become better and more efficient, year by year.

HOERBIGER has always defined itself as an innovation and technology leader. The Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology has time and again been able to fruitfully link its knowledge of customer needs, acquired in the OEM and Service businesses, with the ability to translate this market know-how—plus the

extensive technological expertise available at HOERBIGER—into new innovative products and services.

One example is the HOERBIGER XperSEAL system, a new piston rod packing for recip-rocating compressors developed by HOERBIGER. Immediately after its market launch in 2014, the first series-produced HOERBIGER XperSEAL systems were installed as part of the overhaul of a gas compressor station in Western Europe.

Even before it was officially unveiled during the European Forum for Reciprocating Compressors (EFRC) Conference in Vienna in September 2014, leading market players decided to use the HOERBIGER XperSEAL system. One leading manufacturer of reciprocating compressors, for example, is testing this emission-free solution for biogas applications over a pressure range of 4 to 40 bar. This manufacturer plans to equip the corresponding series of compressors with the HOERBIGER XperSEAL system after the successful conclusion of the test phase.

In the aftermarket business, HOERBIGER has already gained Service customers in Sweden, the USA, and Egypt, thanks to the compelling unique features of XperSEAL system components.

To be able to produce, transport and distribute natural gas, the necessary worldwide infrastructure must be created. This will also benefit HOERBIGER.

In view of these prospects, experts have for some time been referring to the “golden age of gas.” The largest demand will come from the Asia-Pacific region, notably China. Since China has abundant shale gas reserves, the country is expected to utilize these resources and evolve into the second-largest producer of shale gas in the world behind the USA.

While gas production continues to grow in North America and Europe, it is stagnant in Europe. Natural gas production in Europe is too expensive to effectively replace coal and nuclear energy in power generation. The production of biogas is on the decline throughout Europe as government incentives for alternative energies are winding down. The available infrastructure for gas transport is considered sufficient for the coming years.

In 2014, political events and economic developments in all the major sales markets presented the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology with new challenges.

In early 2014 it appeared as if the continual depreciation of several key currencies in Latin America would represent one of the major challenges, as was the case the year before. As it turned out, it was the escalation of political developments in Ukraine that caused by far the larger jolt, affecting large parts of Eastern Europe. This was accompanied by sharp declines in orders from all companies operating in the oil, gas, and process industries in the region. The sanctions imposed on Russia following the events in Ukraine triggered a dramatic currency deterioration in Russia as well.

In the third and fourth quarters of the fiscal year, a global glut of crude oil drove prices down from over 100 U.S. dollars per barrel at the end of June to a mere 53.81 U.S. dollars by December 31, 2014. In January, the price of crude oil plummeted further to approximately 40 U.S. dollars per barrel.

This trend created considerable pressure for the OEM customers of the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology. Over recent years, high crude oil prices had fueled the boom in shale oil and shale gas production. The gas that was produced together with the oil was sold at a good price.

All indications in North America at the beginning of 2014 still pointed to continued favorable growth rates for shale oil and shale gas production. Depending on the particular geological conditions, however, the extraction of oil and gas by what is known as fracking becomes increasingly uneconomic at crude oil prices below 70 U.S. dollars per barrel.

In Asia, on the other hand, the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology had already accounted for continued slower growth, and adjusted its planning accordingly. This deceleration in growth was exacerbated as the year progressed by the Chinese govern-ment’s anti-corruption initiatives, which in numerous industries additionally restrained the fundamental propensity to invest.

A second innovation presented to the trade audience at the EFRC Conference was the electronically controlled HOERBIGER XperLUBE lubricating system.

With the XperLUBE system, HOERBIGER is responding to the need of OEMs and end customers for more flexible and reliable lubrication of process gas and natural gas compressors. It allows oil to be metered with significantly greater precision than existing technical solutions. The first test series with select customers will be launched in 2015.

The trade audience at the EFRC Conference honored the presentation of the HOERBIGER XperLUBE system through its “Best Paper” award. This distinction is a tremendous accolade for the ingenuity of HOERBIGER’s developers.

The HOERBIGER eVCP system is a third innovative project anxiously anticipated by the market. The goal was to develop an add-on technology for the automated, stepless capacity control of high-speed reciprocating compressors.

For many years, no provider has managed to find a practicable solution for the specific requirements of the U.S. natural gas market. Based on a patented actuating mechanism, in 2014 HOERBIGER was the first to develop, and begin field tests on, a solution—the eVCP system—that is suitable for everyday use, and thus meets the needs of the market, for capacity control of high-speed natural gas compressors.

Extremely close and fruitful collaboration with international universities and colleges has for years been a crucial driver of HOERBIGER’s innovative strength.

A good example is the JKU HOERBIGER Research Institute for Smart Actuators at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. This was founded in January 2010 with financial assistance from the HOERBIGER Foundation, which has continued to subsidize the Institute. The Institute very successfully conducts basic and applied research in the field of smart actuators, a key technology for the future projects of all the Strategic Business Units and Business Divisions of HOERBIGER.

At the Montanuniversität Leoben in Austria, HOERBIGER engineers and students are collectively exploring state-of-the-art technologies in injection molding. For many years now, a close partnership has additionally existed between HOERBIGER Corporation of America and Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, USA. As part of this cooperation, an important foundation was laid for the development of high-performance polymers used for valve plates, rings and packings.

In 2013, the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology—inspired by the outstanding experiences in its collaboration with Johannes Kepler University—proposed to intensify university research in the field of industrial natural gas engines.

Over its history spanning more than 20 years, the Large Engine Competence Center (LEC) at Graz University of Technology, Austria, acquired an excellent reputation as a development center for large natural gas engines. Striving to further expand—with impetus from university research—the technological edge already established in Europe, North America and Asia in this important growth segment, HOERBIGER is working with Graz University of Technology as a founding member and research partner on the Evolution of Large Engines Technology project—EvoLET for short.HoerBIger evcp system

Opportunities look good for the zero-leakage technology of the HOERBIGER XperSEAL system to become a key technology in the rings and packings segment for the efficient and emission-free operation of reciprocating compressors.

The HOERBIGER XperSEAL system allows reciprocating compressors to be fitted with gas-tight pressure packings. A pressurized oil barrier and specially developed sealing rings prevent process gas from leaking along the piston rod

through the packing—eliminating the need for nitrogen as a purge gas, external water cooling, or separate packing lubrication.

The HOERBIGER XperSEAL system consists of three system components: the XperSEAL packing, the XperSEAL unit, and the ExBox-S.

The XperSEAL packing contains the sealing rings that form the gas-tight oil barrier. It is designed to allow direct replacement of existing packings.

The required oil pressure is supplied by the XperSEAL unit.

The ExBox-S provides the power supply for the XperSEAL unit and monitors the operation of the packing. It displays the oil level, temperature and pressure, and can be mounted directly on the compressor, even in hazardous areas. All readings can optionally be relayed to a DCS / PLC system.

The HOERBIGER XperSEAL system gives users the certainty that they are in compliance with statutory environmental regulations. In addition, the design of the XperSEAL system boosts the compressor’s reliability. This results from higher safety standards due to the integrated leakage monitoring and the elimination of fault-prone packing cooling.

In the research program scheduled to last four years, academia and industry are pursuing the development of next-generation combustion technologies for gas and dual-fuel engines—offering improved dynamic behavior, higher operating reliability, and greater fuel flexibility. The research work focuses in particular on the areas of ignition, fuel delivery and control technology. Participation in EvoLET also provides research partners from industry with access to state-of-the-art testing equipment for industrial gas-powered engines.

On December 18, 2014, the partners—TU Graz, Montanuniversität Leoben, GE Jenbacher and HOERBIGER—founded LEC GmbH, which will provide the legal framework for the EvoLET program. EvoLET began research operation as scheduled on January 1, 2015.

Posting growth of 9.5 percent, the OEM Division reported a significant increase in 2014. In addition to product innovations, numerous sales initiatives played a role in this achievement, allowing the Division to intensify existing customer relations and attract new customers in an overall difficult market environment.

compressor solutIons BusIness segmentThe consistent focus on growth and profitability paid off in the Compressor Solutions Business Segment. Despite the economic uncertainty in all sales markets triggered by the plummeting oil price, this Business Segment—which specializes in valves, rings and packings, reciprocating compressor controllers, and safety valves—was able to again increase its level of revenue in 2014 and achieve another record year with this excellent performance.

Management’s and the organization’s consistent focus on the objectives of the strategy and business model played a crucial role. The international Product Management organization was realigned in January 2014. Product Managers with regional responsibility in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Americas and Asia-Pacific regions ensure close customer relations and are accountable to the

Global Product Managers for the product groups Valves, Rings & Packings, Controls and Safety.

The goal of the new organizational structure is to offer global and regional OEM customers service and support that is technically competent yet internationally harmonized. A new Customer Relationship Management System ensures the necessary transparency. Its structure is geared in particular to the interest in information and the need for consultation that characterize OEM customers who operate internationally.

Simultaneously with re-establishing the organizational structure in the Compressor Solutions Segment, HOERBIGER initiated the international SaleS program to strengthen technical and commercial advisory expertise. As part of this program, employees with a commercial background receive technical training from Sales, while engineers and technicians acquire the business acumen needed in the international market environment.

Both the realignment of Product Management and the training programs in Sales will help HOERBIGER in the coming years to be able to offer components and solutions to international customers even more effectively and competently than in the past.

The Compressor Solutions Business Segment generated its highest growth in 2014 in the Air and Industrial market segment. This is attributable to a large degree to the successful market launch of the standardized HOERBIGER RN valve series. These technologically optimized new valves, based on the traditional R valve, allow the Compressor Solutions Business Segment to offer HOERBIGER quality to its customers in the fiercely competitive industrial air segment at attractive prices—and high added value.

“One Team—One System—One Target. That is our motto. What matters to us is the customers’ needs and the strategy as a whole.”

4,000 CP valves in a wide variety of uses. Following this success, HOERBIGER in 2014 also managed to enter the price-sensitive and fiercely competitive PET air market. The CP valve has enabled one OEM customer in Japan, for example, to build extremely compact compressors and hence remain competitive internationally.

Based on the overwhelming success of the CP valve in the Air and Industrial market segment, HOERBIGER developed a second, still more efficient, variant of the CP valve for the natural

gas industry: the HOERBIGER CP valve with PowerPEEK™ valve plate.

The HOERBIGER CP valve featuring PowerPEEKTM differs from the previous CP valve in that it has an even more durable valve plate made of carbon fiber-reinforced PowerPEEKTM polymer material.

After undergoing intensive testing for three years in pilot applications, the new valve was launched in May 2014.

“Our new valve has proven itself in use. Valve losses were cut by almost 50 percent over conventional plate valves. Our compact design and the high efficiency of the CP valve featuring the PowerPEEKTM valve plate ensure short payback periods for our customers.”

In natURal Gas aPPlIcatIonsHOERBIGER is again setting standards with the innovative HOERBIGER CP valve featuring a profiled PowerPEEKTM valve plate. Through a combination of design and materials, the new valve surpasses the performance of conventional plate valves in every respect. The design of the new valve plate reduces flow losses by as much as 40 percent. The equivalent flow cross-sectionarea of this new valve designplate is 40 percent greater than ofin conventional plate valves, lowering valve losses by 50 percent.lowering the compressor’s energy consumption by up to 50 percent.

Like all CP valves, the geometry of the new valve combines the unique properties of profiled valve rings with those of conventional valve plates.

An entirely new feature is the profiled valve plate made of extremely durable HOERBIGER PowerPEEKTM non-metallic material. The specific properties of this material make the HOERBIGER CP valve equipped with a PowerPEEKTM valve plate extremely robust and sturdy.

The profiled valve plate made from HOERBIGER PowerPEEK™ qualifies the new valve for critical applications directly related to natural gas production, and also for pipeline compressors subject to high loads. The HOERBIGER CP valve equipped with a PowerPEEK™ valve plate

outperforms conventional plate valves, achieving two to three times the service life.

The HOERBIGER CP valve equipped with a PowerPEEKTM valve plate is suitable for lube and non-lube reciprocating compressors at speeds of up to 2,000 rpm. It is available in diameters of 98 to 212 millimeters.

The robust springs, mounted in replaceable spring sleeves, allow the valve’s use in high-speed reciprocating compressors. Ideally, it is used in applications with a maximum pressure of up to 300 bar and a pressure differential of up to 200 bar, within a temperature range of minus 50 to plus 220 degrees Celsius.

toP-notcH HoeRbIGeR qUalItY at attRactIve PRIcesHigh-speed compressors used in the fiercely competitive industrial air segment stand out with their high degree of standardization. The valves are performance-defining components, and are also subjected to the greatest loads, making them the most frequently replaced parts.

Performance and quality at attractive prices rank highly in the procurement of replacement parts.

With the RN series, HOERBIGER offers a competitively priced standard valve that is specifically tailored to the needs of the industrial air segment.

HOERBIGER RN valves satisfy even the highest quality demands. Like the valve plate made of premium stainless steel, all the remaining vital operating components are made from corrosion-resistant materials.

HOERBIGER RN valves operate reliably without the need for lubrication and are ideally suited for highly demanding applications, such as the production of PET bottles or the supply of respiratory air.

HOERBIGER RN valves are cost-effective, reliable, and distinguished by a long service life, even in critical applications. The low installation height and low-loss flow geometry are additional unique selling propositions, allowing their use in compact compressors with high flow rates.

Excellent contributions to the revenue of the Compressor Solutions Business Segment in 2014 also came from the CP valve, introduced in 2011 for applications related to technical gases.

The profiled plate valve combines the simple design of the traditional plate valve with the high sealing performance and efficiency of a ring valve. A crucial component in this is the profiled valve plate made of carbon fiber-reinforced HOERBIGER polymer material, which under thermal load has expansion properties virtually identical to those of steel.

Especially when used to retrofit older compressors, the CP valve’s flow-optimized gas flow management increases the cost efficiency of systems many times over when compared to the traditional plate valves. One example is the experience of a HOERBIGER customer in Japan. The new valve allowed this customer to achieve energy savings of eight percent on the company’s reciprocating compressors.

Since the first pilot applications in 2008 and the production launch in 2011, the compressor industry has successfully installed more than

Innovations such as the capacity control unit for refrigeration and air conditioning compressors will help the Serial Compressors Segment in the coming years to further increase the level of value generation for automotive applications.

Virtually all the customers of the Serial Compressors Segment operate worldwide. Strong growth is expected to continue in Asia, and most notably in China and India. HOERBIGER has been present in both markets for many years now, with local manufacturing sites at Changzhou in China and Thane in India.

An important factor in markets that are fiercely contested by numerous competitors is cost leadership in production. In an effort to continue to meet this requirement, the construction of a new production plant in Thane was started in 2014 to allow more efficient manufacturing processes as well as improved networking between Production and Development. Approval for the first stage of construction has already been completed, and the relocation to the new premises will be completed in 2015.

engIne solutIons BusIness segment In the Engine Solutions Business Segment, the development work of previous years generated the first major orders in 2014.

The portfolio of the Business Segment encompasses innovative controls, gas mixers, fuel injectors, and ignition systems, all for large engines.

HOERBIGER additionally offers a high-quality range of digital instruments for engines and compressors under the Altronic brand via a worldwide network of distributors. The portfolio includes digital single- and multi-point temperature measuring instruments, scanners, pyrometers, pressure measuring instruments, pressure monitoring systems, tachometers, overspeed protection instruments, and operating time indicators. Under the Altronic Controls brand, HOERBIGER offers control panels and cabinets for equipment manufacturers, packagers and end users, either in conventional designs or using PLC-based controllers.

Precise control of the pre-chamber air-fuel ratio can significantly improve combustion stability and the reliability of industrial gas-powered engines. Based on this knowledge, HOERBIGER developed a dedicated electronic pre-chamber check valve—the HOERBIGER ePCC valve—for direct injection in natural gas engines.

Unlike conventional solutions equipped with mechanical check valves, the electronically controlled HOERBIGER ePCC valve allows precise control of the entire injection process. Metering by the electronic controller is markedly precise and reliable. It improves the efficiency of the injection process and hence the reliability of engines. Ignition misfires at low speeds are largely prevented. The precisely adjustable controller, which is independent of the gas admission pressure, lowers hydrocarbon emissions in all load ranges. Gas-powered engines equipped with HOERBIGER ePCC valves

will therefore satisfy even the more stringent environmental standards that may emerge in the future.

72

The HOERBIGER eHydroCOM system unveiled in prototype form at the EFR Conference in Düsseldorf in 2012 has meanwhile met all expectations. Ten binding orders were already on the books when sales of the production model were launched in 2014. By the end of the year HOERBIGER received a large number of additional inquiries from OEM and Service customers.

The Compressor Solutions Segment was also extremely successful in 2014 with safety valves, in particular in Europe.

The protection of marine diesel engines from the consequences of oil mist explosions in the crankcase remains the most important market segment for HOERBIGER explosion protection valves. Due to the weak economic trend in the shipbuilding industry, sales have stagnated in this key market.

HOERBIGER managed in 2014 to compensate for lower sales in the continued struggling marine business with new sales initiatives. Backed by a strong presence at the international POWTECH trade show in Nuremberg, Germany, HOERBIGER acquired a number of new orders, for example in the dust applications segment.

A newly established business segment is now focusing on the protection of intake and exhaust systems on large-displacement natural gas and dual-fuel engines, in both stationary and marine applications. HOERBIGER explosion protection valves protect these engines from the consequences of potential gas explosions. Notably in marine applications, a growing use of ever-larger gas and dual-fuel engines can be seen. As sizes increase, so does the need to protect the often quite complex intake and exhaust systems from potential gas explosions.

HOERBIGER presented its ExploSE simulation software, developed in-house, at the SMM international maritime trade show in Hamburg, Germany, as well as at the CIMAC Congress in Shanghai, China. The software computes custom design variants for the optimal installation of HOERBIGER explosion protection valves in the exhaust systems of large marine and industrial engines, and is considerably easier to use than conventionally available software solutions.

serIal compressors BusIness segmentIn the Serial Compressors Business Segment, HOERBIGER was overall very successful in 2014 as a system provider of compressors for brake air, refrigeration, and air conditioning.

In all three of these market segments, HOERBIGER customers are facing tough international competition with high pricing pressure. When it comes to components and systems, successful suppliers are primarily those that know how to combine ingenuity with technology and cost leadership.

In October 2014, the Serial Compressors Business Segment showcased a novel capacity control unit for industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning compressors at the international CHILLVENTA trade show in Nuremberg, Germany.

The key in refrigeration and air conditioning technology is to effectively reduce the energy consumption of compressors used in cold chains across the globe. The capacity control unit developed by HOERBIGER enables very high cycle rates without the otherwise common leakage loss—thereby lowering energy costs.

The capacity control unit is presently undergoing testing by a worldwide leading manufacturer of refrigeration compressors in end user applications.

“An extended range of services provides our customers with added value, often making the crucial difference between us and the competition.”

In the fuel injector segment, HOERBIGER in 2014 very successfully continued the introduction of the electronic pre-chamber check valve, or HOERBIGER ePCC, developed for direct-injection natural gas engines. Virtually all leading manufacturers of industrial engines worldwide are now testing the new product family.

The Engine Solutions Business Segment is also doing very well with the HOERBIGER PFI (Ported Fuel Injection) valve developed for engines with intake port injection. As a result of the continually expanding product portfolio, the PFI valve can now be offered for industrial gas engines in all performance categories. These solenoid injection valves are extremely reliable. Industrial customers additionally value their long life cycle.

In 2014, the PFI valve made it possible for HOERBIGER to become a gas engine injection technology supplier to a worldwide leading manufacturer of large engines, used in decentralized power generation from natural gas.Compact biogas cogeneration plants, where adapted industrial engines generate primarily heating energy, but also electricity, remain an important market segment, despite the expiration

of subsidy programs for this form of sustainable energy.

Even gases that are low in energy and therefore not readily combustible can be reliably ignited with the HOERBIGER Altronic VariSpark™ ignition system, unveiled by HOERBIGER for the first time in 2010. The Directed Energy Ignition technology individually adapts to the particular gas mixture used as the fuel. The spark—at up to 50,000 volts—delivers up to 20 times more energy to ignite the gas mixture than conventional ignition systems, through flexible modulation of the ignition process.

sHoRt ResPonse tIMes anD MaxIMUM avaIlabIlItYFor more than ten years now, HOERBIGER has established a comprehensive portfolio in the Engine Solutions Business of extremely reliable electromagnetic fuel injection valves for a wide variety of applications, ranging from fuel cells and hydrogen- or gas-operated car engines, to industrial gas-powered engines of all sizes.

The HOERBIGER PFI valve is installed upstream of the intake valve and, using electronic fuel injection, allows the gas to be injected directly into the engine’s intake manifold. It is suitable both for OEM equipment and as a replacement of mechanical injection for retrofitting older engines.

HOERBIGER PFI valves stand out because of their short response times. They allow extremely precise control of the gas volume, even at high gas pressure differentials.

The HOERBIGER DriveCOM system is particularly effective in conjunction with the valves and actuators for natural gas engines developed by the Engine Solutions Business Segment.

Offering a broad portfolio of engine controls, gas mixers, fuel injectors, and ignition systems, the Engine Solutions Business Segment is increasingly establishing itself as a fully integrated system partner for engine manufacturers for equipping and upgrading gas, dual-fuel and diesel engines.

The market has since recognized and values the dedication displayed by HOERBIGER’s development and sales teams—for example when working with a leading provider of engine-operated combined heat and power (CHP) plants

from Germany. This international company was acquired as a new customer in 2014 and has since procured gas mixers and fuel injectors from HOERBIGER. In the near future, HOERBIGER is excellently positioned in the Engine Solutions Business Segment with performance-increasing and emissions-lowering components and systems for industrial engines—in both the OEM segment and the aftermarket. All indications point to continued positive development of the market environment. Equipment around the world will need to be retrofitted or upgraded to comply with more stringent environmental regulations for industrial engines.

In 2014, the Engine Solutions Business Segment doubled the customer base for the HOERBIGER Altronic VariSpark™. Sales increased dramatically over the previous year.

The HOERBIGER EquiCOM gas mixer, unveiled in 2013, was also received well by the market and additional orders were acquired in 2014. The HOERBIGER EquiCOM gas mixer ideally complements the HOERBIGER Altronic VariSparkTM ignition system when it comes to the economical operation of gas engines with lean gas mixtures such as biogas, mine gas, wood gas or sludge gas.

The HOERBIGER Altronic portfolio is continuously expanding. The latest generation of digital annunciators includes the configurable DE-3000 safety shutdown and control system. It was developed based on state-of-the-art microcontrollers and surface-mount PCB assembly technology for compressors, pumps and other rotating equipment. The scope of functions was significantly expanded in 2014. HOERBIGER also recently added a variant for hazardous areas prone to explosions.

The Asian market remains one of the most significant future markets for the Engine Solutions Business Segment. Particularly in China, HOERBIGER has become a technology leader for engine controls.

The D’BLUE cooperation agreement entered into with diesel injection specialist L’Orange

GmbH, Stuttgart, Germany, opened up new growth potential for HOERBIGER in Asian countries. Effective January 1, 2013, the agreement covers the marketing of integral solutions for diesel, gas and dual-fuel engines in Asia.

Together with L’Orange, HOERBIGER in 2014 further bolstered the brand presence of D’BLUE in Asia. L’Orange contributes expertise as a diesel injection specialist to the collaboration, while HOERBIGER utilizes D’BLUE as a distribution channel for its innovative PFI valves, actuators, and engine management systems. HOERBIGER DriveCOM technology plays a decisive role in the growing success of D’BLUE. This innovative engine control unit was originally developed for natural gas and dual-fuel engines, but is also suited for diesel engines.

Such versatility meets the expectations of the market. In 2014, the performance capability of HOERBIGER DriveCOM technology helped D’BLUE acquire an attractive OEM order for the engines of a new generation of diesel locomotives in China. An additional important market for the future is stationary industrial engines and marine engines. To be able to optimally serve customers in this market segment as well, HOERBIGER will open a dedicated Engine Solutions Sales & Application Office in Suzhou, China, in the spring of 2015.

The initial OEM solutions were developed for gas engines with pre-chamber combustion (PCC) and six-cylinder common-rail diesel engines. On a parallel track, in 2014 DriveCOM variants were also developed for gas engines with ported fuel injection (PFI) and common-rail diesel engines with up to 20 cylinders. As a result, the entire HOERBIGER DriveCOM portfolio will be available not only to OEMs, but in the future also as an aftermarket solution for upgrades of older industrial engines.

In the coming years it remains to be seen what influence the crude oil price trend will have on technologies such as the HOERBIGER GTI+ Bi-Fuel system, which is used to convert large engines from diesel to gas as the primary fuel.

In the long term, however, modern engine technologies equipped with electronic injection and ignition systems, which significantly reduce emissions of harmful substances, will further establish themselves for large engines.

seRvIce DIvIsIonWorldwide competitive pressure further increased in the Service business in 2014. The previous standard business model focusing primarily on component repair and replacement is increasingly becoming unprofitable: in addition to OEMs now also cultivating the fiercely competitive aftermarket, replacement components are growing more reliable year after year—leading to significantly longer service intervals.

As a technology and market leader, the impact of this trend is especially hard on HOERBIGER. While customers benefit from the reliability and durability of performance-defining components and systems made by HOERBIGER, the attractiveness of traditional service and maintenance contracts is declining, as is that of the spare parts business.

As a result, HOERBIGER generated little growth in this segment in Western Europe and North America, yet succeeded in further strengthening the collaboration with regional customers in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

In total, sales in the Service Division rose by 4.3 percent compared to the previous year.

acquIsItIon as a model for success—HoerBIger turBotecHThe acquisition of TurboTech Engenharia, Salvador, Brazil, which took effect on January 1, 2014, delivered an excellent contribution to sales in its very first fiscal year as part of HOERBIGER.

The engineering company specializes in upscale engineering and project management services for turbomachinery, and in 2014 secured attractive

orders for the maintenance and rejuvenation of turbines in Brazil as well as other Latin American countries.

One example is a contract for the overhaul of a 20 MW steam turbine in Colombia. In this key project, HOERBIGER benefited not only from the know-how of TurboTech employees, but most notably from the company’s excellent reputation, which over the years has allowed TurboTech to acquire a strong market position both in Brazil and in the wider region.

2014—a Year of transItIonand strategIc InItIatIves2014 was a year of transition for the Service Division. The most important change initiative was the development of a global Service strategy. This centers around the new Product Lines: Reciprocating Compressors, Engines, Turbomachinery, and Wellhead Compression.

In all four Product Lines, the Division is emphasizing high availability, consistent customer focus, and long-term partnerships. The core of the future Service portfolio will be premium consulting and engineering services, value-adding revamps and reconditioning projects, and attractive operator models—both in the traditional mature markets and in the rapidly evolving emerging markets, which at the same time are fraught with risks of setbacks.

“Our new focus on global product lines will enable us to grow more quickly on a global basis, and to be more clearly differentiated against our competitors, focusing on three key areas: best business case, best technical solutions, and best engineering teams.”

HOERBIGER enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide as a specialist in reciprocating compressors, industrial engines, turbomachinery, and wellhead compression solutions. The Service Division in the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology nonetheless faces challenges in acquiring new business partnerships.

Important insight on the reasons for this came from a related worldwide survey conducted among more than 200 customers from the oil, gas, and process industries during the first half of 2014. According to the survey results, what increasingly distinguishes a modern service partner—in addition to the quality and performance of the components offered, plus consistent on-time delivery—is having the best engineers and technicians, professional documentation, a great safety record, and—increasingly—being able to guarantee performance.

HOERBIGER used the results of this customer survey as an opportunity to fundamentally revise the Service strategy. The strategy, optimized by leading Service experts in the HOERBIGER Group, squarely focuses on the customers’ business needs. While expertise, technology and innovation remain important factors, the newly compiled Service portfolio is driven more strongly by optimization of standards, processes, performance, reliability, and safety.

The new Service strategy will be based on four Product Lines: Reciprocating Compressors, Engines, Turbomachinery, and Wellhead

Compression. In the future, every service job performed by HOERBIGER will come with three value propositions: best business case, best technical solutions, and best engineering teams.

proJect sprIngBoardNow that it is consistently aligned with this new Service strategy, the key for the Service Division is to build on the previous growth successes “by leaps and bounds,” without delay. With this in mind, the global change project to implement this new Service strategy in 2015 and beyond bears the title “Springboard.”

Serving as solutions partners, the HOERBIGER Service teams will evolve into experts in complete systems. Regardless of whether projects involve reciprocating compressors, industrial engines, turbomachinery, or wellhead solutions, HOERBIGER will assume a leadership role in the worldwide service business, with integrated service solutions concentrating on long-term customer relationships. In the future, customers will benefit more than ever from technical performance and high availability rates, as well as reliability and extensive performance guarantees at predictable costs.

The significantly expanded portfolio also necessitates structural changes in the Service Division. In new Centers of Excellence, engineering know-how that previously existed at the regional level will be pooled for every product line. A continuous mutual exchange of ideas and experience will ensure the global sharing of knowledge within the Division.

Around the globe, today more than 5,000 Service customers in the oil, gas, process, and power generation industries trust in the reliability and efficiency of HOERBIGER performance-defining components and services. The key is to convince them, using the new strategic approach, that HOERBIGER, especially in Service, is a highly

competent, innovation-minded and solution-oriented partner—a partner with expertise that is geared toward contributing far more to the customer’s added value than is generally the case for regional service shops specialized in repairing and maintaining components.

In summary, the REE Audit supplies a comprehensive, up-to-date assessment of the entire system’s performance capability. This serves as the basis for suggestions for optimization in terms of reliability, efficiency, and environmental compatibility.

Customers are typically positively surprised by the scope of upgrade potential that REE Audits highlight, and the performance increases from their equipment that are possible from a retrofit. Using REE Audits, which only started in 2013, HOERBIGER has already subjected more than 500 compressors to close scrutiny, prompting customers to implement individual improvement projects. The REE Team calculates the investment expenditure as well as the anticipated return on investment for every proposed improvement. This information forms the basis for what is ultimately the customer’s decision on which improvements take priority.

solutIons for mature markets:preservIng value sustaInaBlYInnovative service offerings such as the REE Audit are the future of the HOERBIGER Service business. They demonstrate that an exact understanding of the customer’s needs and expectations is required if added value is to be achieved with new services.

New approaches such as these meet with great interest, notably in the highly developed mature markets of Western Europe and North America. In 2014 these markets were hobbled by declining demand and a corresponding downward trend in sales in the traditional service, maintenance and spare parts business.

In Western Europe, comparatively low utilization of large-scale process plants is commonplace. European refineries in particular have lost market share over the last few years.

Premium-quality work is only worthwhile if it saves cost, improves efficiency, or makes a lasting contribution to the customer’s added value.

Flexible service concepts such as the REE Audit, where the customer directly determines the time and scope of value-adding services, are more popular than ever.

A second, increasingly important, approach involves upgrade and revamp services for reciprocating compressors, gas-powered engines and turbomachinery.

solutIons for emergIng markets: posItIoned for contInued growtHIn the emerging markets, the traditional maintenance, replacement and spare parts business remains a strong revenue-producing foundation for long-term partnerships with customers. Nonetheless, the service business is dominated by large-scale solution-oriented upgrade and revamp projects for compressors, and increasingly also for engines and turbines in these high-growth emerging economies.

HOERBIGER very successfully completed several major Service projects in 2014 in Latin and South America, and in Brazil and Argentina in particular.

worldwIde growtH prospects:wellHead compressIon solutIons The Wellhead Compression Product Line continues to be an important pillar for HOERBIGER’s growth in the emerging markets. Its objective is to lease and operate wellhead compression units to extract residual amounts from largely depleted oil and gas fields.

The goal of the project is to introduce globally standardized processes at all HOERBIGER Service locations. These form the foundation for a uniform enterprise resource planning system throughout the Group, allowing HOERBIGER

customers to be serviced even more quickly, reliably and efficiently in the future. Another important aspect of this project is the improvement of processes between Service and Operations.

Experts from IT, Purchasing, Logistics, Customer Service and Production met in July 2014 for the project kick-off in Latin America.

By mid-2016, HOERBIGER will integrate all worldwide Service locations into the Together project.

relIaBle, guaranteed—In everY servIce proJectAs part of a Performance Contract, HOERBIGER in the future will guarantee the system reliability and availability required by the customer, for every supported project.

To be able to meet this rather extensive guarantee, the Service Division ensures that individual Service customers worldwide have comprehensive engineering know-how at their disposal, provided by the newly instituted Centers of Excellence. They will organize high-end and reliable local engineering service, worldwide.

Access to expert knowledge on short notice is essential to ensure the efficiency of a machinery pool of compressors, gas engines, pumps and turbines—which commands a major investment to establish. However, such access is in short supply in the service business today.

At present, the number of specialists worldwide who offer the necessary technical expertise and practical experience is comparatively low.

Based on a very future-oriented personnel development policy, HOERBIGER in past years has consistently trained new generations of talented engineers, and has continued to develop them to carry out complex tasks. Today, they are the foundation of the new Service strategy, and represent the successful implementation of customer-oriented solutions in Service inspired by the strategic realignment.

The REE Audit, successfully established in the market in 2013/14 as an innovative service, reveals the path and focus of HOERBIGER’s future service offerings.

The acronym REE denotes Reliability, Efficiency and Environmental Soundness. These are properties that customers in the oil, gas, and process industries expect of every machine. In terms of its components and services, HOERBIGER must deliver a sustainable contribution to meet these criteria, which are the most crucial and valuable ones for the customers’ investment decisions.

Awareness of these customer needs led to the creation of the REE Audit consulting approach. Using their knowledge and experience, HOERBIGER experts audit the customer’s reciprocating compressors: not just the compressor itself, but more importantly the entire system. Analyses are conducted of the

2014 has shown that intensive commitment in the emerging markets provides many opportunities, yet also additional specific risks. These primarily entail considerable economic fluctuations, currency instability and, at times, high political uncertainty.

The Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology nonetheless seeks to continue to deliver outstanding services for its customers and to make a reliable contribution to the development of emerging markets. Offering extensive technological knowledge and experience accumulated over the decades, HOERBIGER will ensure that all customers in the emerging markets are able to operate their systems safely, reliably, efficiently, and sustainably, even under adverse economic and political circumstances.

Through optimized processes and continuous improvements in its cost structure, the Production Division in 2014 once again contributed strongly to the favorable operating result of the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology.

This success can be attributed to numerous Excellence initiatives in Production, Purchasing

and Logistics, but first and foremost in Supply Chain Management.

Notably in the aftermarket and in service, HOERBIGER’s production operation faces widely fluctuating demand. Both customers and the HOERBIGER Service organization nonetheless look to the Division for increasingly shorter lead times. It is an expectation that necessitates considerable flexibility from the Operations network.

A macroeconomic predictive model developed in one of several Excellence projects now enables the Production Division to better understand previously difficult-to-predict fluctuations in demand. In conjunction with newly organized processes, job rotation and training, this statistical basis has helped to considerably reduce average delivery times, even when demand is challenging.

An excellent example is the optimization of turnaround times in the Rings & Packings product group. By standardizing processes and eliminating non-value-adding steps, the order processing time alone was reduced by more than 60 percent. Combined with a changed production approach, total delivery times were cut in half.

neW seRvIce centeRs In latIn anD centRal aMeRIcaIn Latin America, leasing and operating wellhead compression units continues to generate favorable growth momentum, especially in Argentina and Chile, but also in Mexico.

Despite the ongoing difficult economic situation in Argentina, HOERBIGER was able to expand business activities in 2014. After having established a new HOERBIGER site in 2013 in Añelo, a small town near the Loma La Lata natural gas field, new and larger premises were leased in Neuquén as well in 2014.

The former Service location in Neuquén, which opened in 2000, by 2013 was already having difficulty in properly supporting the growth in the region.

The Wellhead Compression team in Reynosa, Mexico, in 2014 also relocated to larger, and more importantly safer, business premises. The employees in Reynosa, who now operate from the Villa Florida industrial park, are responsible for maintaining and servicing the wellhead compression units installed in the region. In view of ongoing safety concerns in Mexico, their task is extraordinarily difficult. The work commands courage and the utmost commitment from all HOERBIGER employees.

Global change processes, as the Production Division pursued them again in 2014, are only possible when all the subject matter experts in the company are interconnected. Transparent and consistent communication between management and employees is equally important. As a result, the Production Division relies on four key building blocks on its journey to Operational Excellence: global communication, a Global Project Management Office (GMPO), a Global Expert Network, and the horizontal and vertical interconnectedness of management trainees.

The Production Division has set the goal of achieving Operational Excellence at every one of the twelve worldwide production plants in the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology by 2018.

It plans to do so not only as a lasting contribution to a significant improvement in the cost situation, but primarily to provide high value to customers. By optimizing the worldwide supply chain,

increasing availability, and reducing lead times, the Division will be able to meet the continually rising needs of the market.

A new manufacturing cell at HOERBIGER Corporation of America in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, is setting new standards in the production of valve seats and guards for small compressor valves. Manufacturing engineer Arnulfo Ramirez Orozco and his team managed to boost throughput of these important components by 50 percent.

All essential work steps in the production of valve seats and guards in Fort Lauderdale are carried out by fully automatic machining centers, known as multi-tasking machines. Previously, this job required six machines. Arnulfo Ramirez Orozco was able to convince management at HOERBIGER Corporation of America and the Global Project Management Office in the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology to replace the six old machines with two new,

modern machining centers. Each of these transforms steel bar stock into finished valve seats and guards in a fully automatic process.

Time-consuming set-ups of the machines were reduced significantly: instead of five set-up processes previously, today only one combined set-up process is required for the two machines.

Equipment operators now spend very little time mounting tools and fixtures on the new machining centers, or changing machine programs. The new machines fulfill all manufacturing needs without this set-up work. Compared to the former approach, the team today ultimately achieves twice the output with higher quality and a lower scrap rate.

HOERBIGER generated successful sales in 2014 in particular through innovation projects, such as the new positioner modules developed in the Valve Automation Business Segment and the HOERBIGER Laser Gas Regulator in the Compact Motion Technology Business Segment.

The innovative HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuators and HOERBIGER ePrAXTM actuators for press brakes are increasingly well-received in the market. Long-term customer projects were also acquired in 2014 for the newly developed CTL lift column.

2014 not only started out as an unpredictable year for many companies in the mechanical and plant engineering industry, it also ended on a rather disappointing note. In the fall of 2013, economists from the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) had forecast real production growth of approximately 3 percent for 2014. Despite good order volumes in the first and second quarters, however, this forecast had to be revised in the summer of 2014. Ultimately, Germany’s mechanical and plant engineering industry was only able to increase production by one percent compared to 2013, and exports of machinery and equipment from Germany rose 1.7 percent in the year-over-year comparison.

In contrast, HOERBIGER benefited from stable orders in the traditional hydraulics business in the first and second quarters, and good sales volumes for positioner modules, power units for the shipbuilding industry, and micro hydraulics solutions. Demand subsided slightly in the third quarter, and by October it could not be foreseen whether the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology’s sales target would be achievable by year’s end.

The strong fourth quarter, and most notably good sales in December, helped the Strategic Business Unit to ultimately achieve its sales target of 68 million euros budgeted for 2014.

valve aUtoMatIon bUsIness seGMentThe Valve Automation Business Segment, which is still in the development phase, posted growth of 24 percent in the year-over-year comparison. This growth resulted not only from strong existing business with marine power units, but also to a large degree from successful sales of positioner modules and electrohydraulic valve actuators.

energY-effIcIent pIeZo tecHnologY:HoerBIger posItIoner modulesThe Valve Automation Segment achieved excellent success in the market in the positioner module segment.

HOERBIGER positioner modules are performance-defining components used in the automation of industrial valves. Their core is a piezoelectric control element, which allows the positioner of an industrial valve to control the valve quickly and precisely. Combined with pneumatic valve technology, HOERBIGER positioner modules provide a particularly energy-efficient interface for electrical control of positioners.

For many customers, a compelling and unique feature of HOERBIGER positioner modules is their intrinsically safe design. This offers maximum protection in environments prone to explosions, such as the process industry.

HOERBIGER is able to acquire new customers whenever industrial valve manufacturers replace previously used positioners as part of the development of a new product generation.

Exactly such a situation led to a sizeable new order for the employees of the Valve Automation Business Segment from a leading manufacturer in the smart positioner market. This customer developed its latest generation of intelligent positioners using HOERBIGER positioner modules. The extremely low internal air consumption of the HOERBIGER SRM modules resulted in the new product line being recognized during its successful launch as “the greenest solution worldwide” for smart positioners by an internationally renowned certification institute.

The second pillar in the Valve Automation Business Segment is marine power units. These compact hydraulic power units are used to fill and empty ballast and process water tanks in ocean-going vessels.

The newly developed electrohydraulic valve actuators of the TriVAXTM product family are the third and most recent area of operation of the Valve Automation Segment. With safety functions integrated into the valve actuator, HOERBIGER earned the trust of renowned operators worldwide in power plants, the water and waste water industry, and in the oil, gas, and process industries.

compact motIon tecHnologY BusIness segmentIn the Compact Motion Technology Business Segment, HOERBIGER engages in the development and sale of a broad portfolio of performance-defining components for demanding customer applications in the mechanical engineering field.

HOERBIGER has held a strong market position for hydraulic components used in press brakes for decades. Over the last few years, the sheet metal working portfolio was considerably expanded with the development of a new generation of electrohydraulic actuator systems for press brakes and innovative components for laser cutting systems.

Another important target market is that of medical technology. Over the years, HOERBIGER has made a name for itself as a premium supplier of compact lifting columns for operating tables, as well as a developer of specialty valves for respirators.

A new market segment that is increasingly gaining in importance is hydraulic solutions for wind turbines, especially hydraulic brakes and rotor locks.

The intelligent combination of function, comfort and reliability—that is the challenge behind the goal of carefully crafted actuator technology and translating it into application-oriented, innovative solutions for the customer.

BecomIng a full-servIce provIder:HoerBIger valve actuatorsIn the valve actuator segment, the Valve Automation Business Segment successfully established the HOERBIGER brand as a manufacturer of electrohydraulic valve actuators.

The HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuator was unveiled to the trade audience at the international valve technology trade show ValveWorld in Düsseldorf as a prototype in 2012. The valve has since gone into series production and within just two years has impressed decision-makers in the industry as an innovative product in terms of both safety and control.

Another unique selling proposition of the HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuator is the

integrated smart partial stroke test (PST). To ensure the mechanical functionality of a valve in combination with the actuator, the operator is required to trigger a partial stroke test at regular intervals. This manual intervention is no longer required with the valve actuators developed by HOERBIGER: the HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuator records the actuating forces that occur during every movement and generates a meaningful PST state value. Based on this data, the operator can determine the condition of the overall system at any time and take timely corrective action if necessary.

At ValveWorld 2014, three leading providers of specialty valves showcased newly developed solutions equipped with HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuators—primarily for applications that

tHe coRe of IntellIGent PosItIoneRsIn new developments, a growing number of valve and positioner manufacturers are relying on modern, intelligent positioners equipped with HOERBIGER piezo technology, instead of traditional electric or pneumatic solutions.

An important decision-making criterion is the energy consumption of a positioner module, also referred to in German as an SRM (Stellungsreglermodule). HOERBIGER SRM technology offers crucial unique features when it comes to this performance-defining parameter. A valve manufacturer and reference customer for HOERBIGER, for example, was able to cut the power consumption of a control valve from 498 KWh, when using traditional technologies, to 4.1 KWh by changing to the positioner module in the present series production.

HOERBIGER positioner modules featuring piezo technology nonetheless score highly for reasons other than their energy efficiency. Their intrinsically safe design also satisfies the high safety requirements of the process industry.

With a broadly diversified product portfolio—ranging from on/off modules, through proportional control modules, to high-performance modules—HOERBIGER SRM technology covers all needs of the market, both in the cost-effective segment and in areas where high performance and precision have top priority.

To complete the SRM product family, HOERBIGER is presently developing a positioner module with proportional control. The first prototypes of this innovative positioner module are scheduled for testing by select customers in 2015.

demand not only high control performance, but also reliability and integrated safety functions. The fact that the HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuator, unlike conventional drive solutions, also boasts demonstrably higher energy efficiency and a significantly simpler user interface is another compelling selling point for valve manufacturers.

In addition to valve manufacturers from Germany, and Europe in general, market players from Asia and the Americas have also shown an interest in expanding their portfolio with variants equipped with the HOERBIGER TriVAXTM actuator. One important aspect is that the advantages of the self-contained electrohydraulic drive system are increasingly winning over not only valve manufacturers, but also plant planners and end users.

One example is a power plant operator in Turkey who followed the suggestion of the company in charge of planning a new power plant to equip the condensate quick-acting valves with a HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuator. HOERBIGER delivered the electrohydraulic actuators with integrated safety functions at the end of 2014.

In China, the dedicated sales staff of the Valve Automation Segment at the HOERBIGER Wuxi site acquired the operator of a steel plant as a new customer. The TriVAXTM actuator will be used to protect process gas lines in a newly constructed on-site power plant.

With the increasing success of the HOERBIGER TriVAXTM family in the market, the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology is well on its way to positioning the HOERBIGER brand as a full-service provider for electrohydraulic actuators used in industrial valves.

The HOERBIGER TriVAXTM flex actuator gives the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology a powerful electrohydraulic actuating solution for safety-relevant specialty valves.

The current HOERBIGER TriVAXTM valve actuator is generally suitable for all applications requiring thrust forces of 5 to 360 kN. Due to its high force capability, it is not an alternative to standard applications where the thrust is below 4 kN.

The performance class below 4 kN, however, is presently the most significant sales market for electric and pneumatic valve actuators. In addition to functionality and safety, factors such as procurement costs, replacement parts logistics, ongoing service and maintenance are the most important factors here.

The greatest contribution to the revenue of the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology still comes from the Compact Motion Technology Business Segment. Top sellers in the existing business include traditional hydraulic actuators for press brakes, compact hydraulic solutions for automotive-related applications and sport boats, and the proven product line of HOERBIGER TECNO valves for a wide variety of uses in mechanical engineering and medical technology.

Innovation projects of recent years also increasingly account for the success in the Compact Motion Technology Business Segment. The most successful innovation at present in terms of profit is the HOERBIGER Laser Gas Regulator (LGR). Since its 2012 debut at EuroBLECH, the leading international trade show for the sheet metal working industry, in Hanover, Germany, seven manufacturers of laser cutting machines have decided to rely on HOERBIGER valve technology to regulate the flow of assist gases. The models in the new series were presented at EuroBLECH in 2014. Order books are already well-filled for some of these new extremely precise machines—one reason why the Compact Motion Technology Business Segment surpassed the sales target set for the Laser Gas Regulator by approximately 70 percent in 2014.

As an innovation and technology leader, HOERBIGER completely re-thought the drive concept of traditional hydraulic actuators for press brakes. The result: the innovative HOERBIGER ePrAXTM basic actuator.

The systematic separation of the hydraulic systems, integrated in the control block, forms the core of the new development. Each of the two press axes of the press brake is assigned a dedicated drive unit, including a hydraulic pump and hydraulic tank. The volume of the hydraulic tanks can be reduced by up to 60 percent, thanks to the optimized performance of the new actuators. Another benefit: the traditional pump block forms a compact unit together with the HOERBIGER ePrAXTM basic system. Additional tubing is eliminated, as is time-consuming assembly work.

Everyday press operation requires varying pressure levels on the press cylinders, depending on the workpiece geometry. The load sensing controller, for which a HOERBIGER patent application is pending, provides each axis with the needed pressure individually. When a

cylinder is subject to lower load, the pressure is automatically adapted to the current requirements.

The HOERBIGER ePrAXTM basic shows its full potential when the press brake manufacturer uses frequency-controlled asynchronous motors or servo motors to drive the hydraulic pumps. During pressing—rapid downward movement—the motors can be increased to the necessary speed in fractions of a second. With powerful control electronics, they can be actuated equally fast when the beam is raised.

The high-performance valves integrated by HOERBIGER in the control block allow the press brake manufacturer to completely shut off the motors of the hydraulic pump during all stoppages.

Long-term testing conducted by HOERBIGER with pilot customers has shown that the combi-nation of rapid motion and motor shut down during stoppages with a HOERBIGER ePrAXTM basic system provides press brake manufacturers with maximum productivity and energy efficiency: up to 30 percent more productivity at up to 50 percent less power consumption.

Another innovative project in the Compact Motion Technology Business Segment is the HOERBIGER ePrAXTM actuator for press brakes. HOERBIGER presented prototypes of these actuators—which stand out with their high positioning accuracy, energy efficiency and minimal noise—to the trade audience in 2012.

Commercial production of the compact press actuator has now begun with the HOERBIGER ePrAXTM 15. This variant is suitable for standard press brakes with a press capacity of 110 tons, a common size. The response has been outstanding: at EuroBLECH 2014, three HOERBIGER customers showcased newly developed products featuring HOERBIGER ePrAXTM 15 actuators.

The opportunities look good for the HOERBIGER ePrAXTM 15 actuator to establish itself as the new industry standard for mid-sized press brakes, not only in Europe, but also in China. In 2014, the local sales team in China managed to place samples with two OEMs that are significant in the regional market.

In March 2015 prototypes of the Chinese-manufactured press brakes equipped with HOERBIGER ePrAXTM 15 actuators were unveiled at the China Shenzhen International Machinery Manufacturing Industry Exhibition (SIMM) in Shenzhen. Production of the new machines is scheduled to start before the end of 2015.

In 2015, HOERBIGER will complement the product family of electrohydraulic compact actuators with another variant. The HOERBIGER ePrAXTM 19 is intended for press brakes with a press capacity of up to 170 tons. Machines of this size are preferred for industrial sheet metal working.

Over recent decades, HOERBIGER has supplied conventional hydraulic systems for more than 60,000 CNC press brakes around the globe. The drive system of each of these machines comprises two hydraulic cylinders for moving the press beam, plus a central control block.

The worldwide customer base of the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology includes internationally leading manufacturers of machine tools, which in the majority of cases are also

technology leaders, plus many medium-sized and small companies.

The long-standing partnership with these companies, which continuously develop their equipment portfolios while preserving fundamental design features, is an important driver for HOERBIGER to remain an innovation and technology leader in traditional hydraulic concepts.

With the HOERBIGER ePrAXTM basic, HOERBIGER unveiled a hydraulic control unit for conventional press brake designs with two press axes and a press capacity of up to 30,000 kN at EuroBLECH 2014.

With the newly developed system, which was patented by HOERBIGER, press brakes are able to perform their work considerably more effectively and efficiently: productivity is up to 30 percent higher, and energy consumption is reduced by as much as 50 percent.

In the Compact Motion Technology Business Segment, the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology also achieved a substantial increase in business through system solutions for wind turbines. In 2014, it acquired additional project and system orders for hydraulic rotor brakes from an internationally successful wind turbine manufacturer in Germany.

In the medical technology market segment, which continues to generate the highest revenue, HOERBIGER again did very well with hydraulic lifting columns for operating tables, which have been systematically developed for all performance categories over recent years.

China remains the most important target market for the most recent lifting column—the Column Trend Line (CTL). The CTL was developed for a maximum patient weight of 300 kilograms, an installation height of 450 millimeters, and a stroke of 350 millimeters. These technical performance characteristics make the new lifting column compatible with the latest surgical techniques, for which hospital staff prefer a low height in the retracted position, as well as with the requirements of operating table manufacturers in Asia. All HOERBIGER lifting columns are designed for a service life of at least 10,000 cycles. They also set themselves apart by being maintenance-free, energy-efficient and—compared to strictly electric drive systems—very quiet and precise.

Other lifting columns in the HOERBIGER product portfolio for medical technology include the heavy-duty Column High Line (CHL) and the Column Comfort Line (CCL), which is designed for medium patient weights.

This makes the success of the employees of the Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division all the more commendable. They managed to further grow HOERBIGER’s market share in 2014 in the difficult Roof Hydraulics Segment, while increasing the profitability of the Business Division as a whole.

The development of the Type 6 roof drive contributed decisively to this success. The compact, powerful power unit was designed specifically for convertibles in the mid-range and high-end classes, where heavy multi-piece, steel roofs require precise movement despite severe space constraints.

Based on the Type 6 prototypes, in 2014 HOERBIGER developed additional variants for new convertible model series that the automobile industry is planning in the coming years. In March 2014, for example, HOERBIGER won the extremely attractive call for bids for a new convertible in the high-end class developed in Germany. This vehicle is scheduled to go into series production in 2016, and even today sales figures are expected to be high.

The Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division can also point to great successes in the compact car market segment in 2014. A convertible produced in Japan, for which HOERBIGER supplies a hydraulic roof drive equipped with two actuators, turned into a top seller beyond all expectations. Exceptionally good demand for the attractively priced convertible generated significantly higher revenue than planned, contributing to the success of the Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division.

HOERBIGER will explore new avenues at the Auburn site in the coming years, since the future of this operation has become increasingly jeopardized by continually declining demand for hydraulic roof drives in the North American convertible market. In this difficult environment, the committed management team at Auburn won one of the most attractive new contracts in this segment to date: the shipment of hydraulic drives for the gullwing doors of an otherwise all-electric vehicle.

It is already evident that sales of this solely electrically powered vehicle will be huge worldwide. The order books of the highly innovative US manufacturer are full even before production has begun. Shares of the company listed on the stock exchange posted a record high after series production was announced in 2014.

In the Transmission Comfort Segment, the initiative focusing on the sale of the pneumatic gearshift support system for commercial vehicles continued successfully in the Asian market in 2014.

Unlike in Europe, heavy-duty commercial vehicles and tractors in Asia are predominantly equipped with manual transmissions. The pneumatic gearshift support systems manufactured and refined by HOERBIGER have compelling unique features when it comes to shift comfort and reliability—one reason why several commercial vehicle manufacturers from China are already expressing great interest.

HoerBIger gearshift support system

Offering powerful hydraulic actuators for convertible tops, the Automotive Comfort Systems Division has developed an excellent reputation over the last 35 years as a premium supplier to the automotive industry.

In 2008, Automotive Comfort Systems came under pressure worldwide as a result of the crisis in the automobile industry. At that time, the Business Division was spun off from the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology and managed as an independent entity. The Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division has since continued to evolve. As of the end of 2012, it has again been consistently profitable and has posted strong sales.

In the Roof Hydraulics Segment, the Type 6 power unit introduced a powerful compact drive for convertibles equipped with multi-piece steel tops.

In the Transmission Comfort Segment, HOERBIGER made a name for itself with powerful pneumatic gearshift support systems for commercial vehicles.

In the Loading Comfort Segment, HOERBIGER is working on future-oriented comfort solutions that allow easy transport of heavy loads.

The development of the Operations & Components Segment, which has been expedited since the beginning of 2014, makes key components from the production of roof drives now available for industrial applications. The distribution responsibility for this Smart Micro Fluid portfolio lies with the Strategic Business Unit Automation Technology.

Sales and Development are headquartered in Schongau, Germany, and Auburn, Alabama, USA. The largest production plant of this Business Division is Bolesławiec in Poland. Hydraulic actuators for the American market are produced in Auburn, Alabama, USA. At the end of 2014, the Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division had a total of 412 employees.

Companies manufacturing roof hydraulics are operating in fiercely competitive terrain. Around the globe, the automotive industry has not succeeded in appreciably boosting sales of convertibles since the crisis in 2009. The competition that exists among suppliers, which is intensifying at an increasing rate and has already resulted in drastic shakeouts in the market, could jeopardize additional players in the coming years.

102

“One distinguishing trait of our Business Division has always been the consistently high dedication, ambition and commitment to perform of all employees at our locations in Germany, Poland, and the USA. This stance is of crucial importance for the advancement of the Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division. In 2014, development and sales secured key orders for HOERBIGER from the automobile and commercial vehicle industry in two segments: roof drives and transmission comfort. The Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division will not be able to rest on its laurels for long, however. In the Roof Hydraulics Segment in particular, HOERBIGER will continue to feel extreme pressure from the competition in the medium and long term.

With this in mind, the intensified quest for applications in attractive new business segments is essential—notably for the compact hydraulic power units developed in the Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division.

This kind of new business potential arises for HOERBIGER in the Smart Micro Fluid Segment. The objective here is to utilize the development, industrialization and manufacturing expertise of the Bolesławiec site to harness key components from the production of roof drives for new and attractive industrial applications.

to hold significant growth potential. The best example is the innovative drive concept of the Type 6 power unit. It is suited for a wide variety of applications in mechanical engineering where—like convertible top drives—high power density and low weight, along with limited installation space, are key.

Components and systems used in press brakes will remain another core area of the future Hydraulics Business Division. HOERBIGER has held a strong competitive position in this market segment for decades. In the Hydraulics Division, HOERBIGER will expand the know-how acquired over the last few years with the development of a new generation of electrohydraulic actuator systems for press brakes, and use it for an even broader range of mechanical engineering applications.

fIrst-rate market access for valve automatIonThe newly developed valve actuators and piezo-pneumatic positioner modules are important innovative products in the Valve Automation Business Segment. They stand out with their highly efficient, integrated safety functions. With these unique features, HOERBIGER earned the trust of renowned operators in power plants as well as in the oil, gas, and process industries on a worldwide basis.

With respect to entering the global market, several joint trade show presentations of the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology and Valve Automation Business Segment over the last few years have demonstrated just how closely related their customers and access to the market are when it comes to safety functions. Even today, the structures of the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology help the Valve Automation Segment launch the TriVAXTM valve actuators internationally.

It is therefore logical to assign the Valve Automation Business Segment to the Strategic Business Unit Compression Technology. This will provide the Valve Automation Business Segment with considerably broader access to the global market and open up significantly greater market opportunities as well as more advanced business opportunities.

In 2014, the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology benefitted from a very positive global economic trend in the automotive industry. In China in particular, vehicles equipped with HOERBIGER synchronizers reached sales figures that far exceeded expectations.

This contrasts with other key markets, where the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology faced major challenges. The worldwide decline in sales of the Strategic Business Unit from 347.5 million euros in 2013 to 328.2 million euros in 2014, for example, can primarily be attributed to the phase-out of an older generation of transmissions by an important customer in Germany.

As a consequence, it was important to attract new orders in 2014. These orders will help the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology offset the decline in sales from its German locations and, beyond that, considerably increase the existing level of revenue.

The trend in China was markedly positive. Sales volumes generated previously in 2012 and 2013 positively affected business development over the course of 2014. Additionally, the partnership established in China over many years—as a result of expertise and mutual appreciation—with one of the largest automobile groups worldwide was the crucial factor that enabled HOERBIGER to win new contracts in Europe for synchronizers used in dual-clutch transmissions.

In North America, the Waterloo site, which specializes in fine blanked parts for the automotive industry, reported good utilization and favorable figures in 2014 for the first time after several difficult years.

According to the Verband der Automobilindustrie e.V. (VDA, German Association of the Automotive Industry), approximately 13 million vehicles were registered in Europe in 2014, an uptick of 5.4 percent year-over-year. In the USA, registration figures rose by 5.8 percent to approximately 16.4 million vehicles. In China, the number of new registrations grew to approximately 18.4 million vehicles, or 12.7 percent, while in Russia

registration numbers slumped by 10.3 percent to approximately 2.5 million vehicles.

Analyses by the VDA indicate that the USA will be the primary growth market for the automobile industry in the coming years. “The overall economic prospects remain good. In 2014 the US gross domestic product (GDP) rose by around 2.3 percent, and in 2015 it will, in all probability, climb by another 3.0 percent,” the Association commented in its press release on trends in the automotive markets published in January 2015.

In Europe, experts anticipate the economic trend for automobiles to improve slightly in the coming year. At the beginning of January, the editorial team of the trade magazine Automobilwoche predicted “positive dynamics” in new car sales for 2015. While steady improvement can be observed, though, demand for passenger cars in Western Europe was reported to remain at a very low level.

Expectations for China vary widely. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) expressed concern in early January to the trade magazine Automobil-Produktion about the possibility that other metropolitan cities in the country could follow Peking’s and Shanghai’s example and limit the number of new registrations as a result of heavy air pollution.

Other experts, in contrast, expect the Chinese passenger car market to continue to expand rapidly in the coming years. At present, only 52 cars are registered per 1,000 inhabitants in China.

Southeast Asia in general is regarded as the next hotspot in the automobile industry. At only 46 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, Indonesia’s new vehicle market is far from being saturated.

Notwithstanding HOERBIGER’s outstanding technological position in this area, the majority of contracts awarded to the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology in 2014 were determined primarily by the cost leadership role attained in recent years. Technical customer support and the structure of the sales organization, now consistently aligned with the needs of the automotive industry, played an equally important role.

Two strategically important orders for synchronizers used in dual-clutch transmissions in Europe, as well as a major order from a large French automaker, were awarded to HOERBIGER in the first half of the year.

In the second half, a long-term agreement on the delivery of disks for automatic transmissions was successfully renewed. This safeguards the continued existence of the Penzberg site, which specializes in automatic transmission components. Penzberg celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, and the new agreement will ensure sustained, reliable utilization for the coming years.

A very substantial success in 2014 was the renewal of another long-term agreement to supply synchronizers to one of the world’s leading car transmission manufacturers for the years 2014–2017. This contract will secure high order volumes for HOERBIGER in the years ahead.

In China, two large local auto-makers were acquired as new customers in connection with new projects for dual-clutch transmissions.

Effective January 1, 2015, the organizational structure of the Strategic Business Unit was aligned with the new strategic orientation.

Market & Programs now combines the functions of Sales / Global Key Account Management, Product Management, Solutions & Programs, and Purchasing, as well as Market & Programs China. Effective June 1, 2015, the Transmission Comfort Segment previously covered under the Automotive Comfort Systems Business Division was additionally integrated into Market & Programs as the Commercial Vehicles Segment.

The formerly separate Friction Systems and Sleeve Systems Product Units were combined, forming a new Operations department which pools the responsibilities for the global production locations and the Metal Forming Center of Competence.

Innovation and technology scouting, strategic market development and marketing communication were pooled under the umbrella of Business Development & Marketing. This key department will expedite the strategic development for the Strategic Business Unit in the future. Focal areas include the ongoing development of the existing synchronizer business and the future initiatives of the Strategic Business Unit—business ideas “beyond synchronizer.”

The future responsibilities of Research & Development within the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology will include advanced engineering, series and application development, and practical testing. The department will also act as a cross-divisional expert partner for all automotive development projects in the HOERBIGER Group.

Additional pillars of the new organizational structure are Human Resources and Finance & Support.

In the coming years, it will be essential to further improve the technology and cost position in Europe, while advancing localization in Asia.

This is especially important in China, where HOERBIGER has for years been a technology leader for innovative transmission technologies. This applies in particular to synchronizers for dual-clutch transmissions, which in China are considered an attractive alternative to manual transmissions.

To complement the existing sliding sleeve manufacturing operation, the Changzhou site began producing engagement bodies and disks for the regional market in early August 2014. Two machining centers were transferred from the Oberstenfeld plant to China specifically for this purpose. HOERBIGER will continue to invest in the Changzhou site in 2015, to strengthen local management and develop additional production capacity.

HOERBIGER will also manufacture friction systems in China in the near future. In addition to the existing production facility, another factory will be added for this purpose in the GDH Changzhou Riverside Industrial Park. The necessary equipment for the friction systems operation was ordered from local manufacturers at the end of 2014—another clear commitment on the part of HOERBIGER to China as a business location.

In addition to its commitment in China, HOERBIGER also continues to invest in Germany. In 2014, for example, a new high-performance longitudinal forming press was procured for the Schongau site.

With HOERBIGER CompactLINE, unveiled to the expert community in 2013, and the equally innovative HOERBIGER HC300 friction lining, the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology recently developed two key technologies for future generations of transmissions.

HOERBIGER CompactLINE has since been successfully positioned in the market. A demo vehicle equipped with HOERBIGER CompactLINE has subsequently been presented to nearly all European automakers and transmission manufacturers. The response was overwhelmingly positive.

Based on the prototypes, HOERBIGER is now developing custom CompactLINE modules for small, mid-range and large transmission classes. It is becoming apparent that HOERBIGER CompactLINE is equally suitable both for compact and mid-size vehicles manufactured in large volumes, and for luxury vehicles where significantly higher torque is the norm.

“With the production of engagement bodies and disks, HOERBIGER is making a huge step forward in Changzhou in its efforts to maintain a leadership role as a system provider in the development of the Chinese automotive market.”

HOERBIGER introduced another innovation in June 2014 at the 14th International VDI Congress “Transmissions in Vehicles”: the new Blocker Ring Basic featuring HOERBIGER microGROOVE, or BRB for short.

HOERBIGER had assumed the complex task of developing a synchronizer ring for vehicles in the low-price segment that would offer the benefits of brass rings, yet be wear-resistant and cost-effective to produce in large volumes.

And it accomplished this feat: robust, reliable, cost-effective and produced from strip steel using only metal forming technology, the Blocker Ring Basic featuring HOERBIGER microGROOVE is setting a new standard in the entry-level transmission segment. Compared to traditional brass rings, long-term testing has shown that the HOERBIGER Blocker Ring Basic reduces axial wear by about 90 percent—at attractive production costs comparable to traditional brass rings.

sIMPlY sYncHRonIzeD

When gears are shifted manually, synchronizers transfer force as they match the rotational speed of the main transmission shaft to that of the gear wheel. The primary load in this process is applied to the synchronizer rings, whose conical surfaces transfer these forces by way of friction.

In the high-volume entry-level transmission segment, traditional synchronizer rings are generally made of brass. This is a cost-effective material, and manufacturers tolerate the low wear resistance of brass as a trade-off.

As an innovation and technology leader for steel synchronizer rings, HOERBIGER set a goal to develop a new synchronizer ring for compact cars and vehicles in the lower mid-size category. The new ring would be just as cost-effective to produce in large volumes as traditional brass rings, yet be considerably more robust and wear-resistant.

The result: in 2014, HOERBIGER unveiled the HOERBIGER Blocker Ring Basic made of formed steel. One of the unique features of the Blocker Ring Basic is that it can be produced in one operation using metal forming technology. As a result of the innovative HOERBIGER microGROOVE, the Blocker Ring Basic can be

installed in the transmission without bonding an additional friction lining.

Thanks to the metal forming production process and wear-mitigating heat treatment perfected by HOERBIGER, all the functional features, final dimensions and the microGROOVE are generated in the forming tool.

During the remainder of the year, the Blocker Ring Basic met with great interest from China’s automotive industry. When it featured at the 3rd International CTI Symposium in Suzhou, China, in September 2014, the new synchronizer ring was very well received by developers from the region.

Fundamental synchronizer development will remain a focal area of development work in the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology. HOERBIGER will also continue to invest in developing state-of-the-art high-performance friction linings.

In 2014, the new HC310 carbon friction lining was developed in record time. It is based on the HC300 friction lining, which was already successful in the market, and is suited for dual-clutch transmissions where high shifting forces and torques are common.

HOERBIGER nonetheless sees new market opportunities beyond key technologies for modern manual and dual-clutch transmissions. Traditional products, such as steel discs for automatic transmissions, also have significant development potential. Developers in this market segment are faced with balancing increased demands for greater comfort, higher power density, and continuing pricing pressure.

A key driver is the realization that alongside electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles—including modern transmissions as well as new generations of engines—can contribute significantly to lowering carbon dioxide emissions.

2015 will be another year in which the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology is sure to face major challenges. The aggressive growth strategy, high number of product launches and global strategic programs will require the commitment of the entire organization. Sustained by a clear, growth-oriented strategy and exceedingly good opportunities, the employees of the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology are meeting these challenges head-on.

In the medium and long term, sales expectations for the Strategic Business Unit Drive Technology are excellent. The newly adopted strategy will ensure that HOERBIGER is positioned extraordinarily well for the coming years, even in a difficult automotive market and a competitive atmosphere.

Based on the compressor valve development and production expertise, in 1971 HOERBIGER decided to systematically build a worldwide network of service entities for the maintenance and repair of reciprocating compressors. This put the company clearly ahead of the competition.

on tHe waY to tHe groupAugust 1989: Martina Hörbiger, owner of the group of companies, died at the age of 87. She bequeathed the challenge of realigning the corporate structure—which in the years prior was centered predominantly around her—to the new management team, which she had

appointed prior to her passing together with the Board of Trustees of the HOERBIGER Foundation. As a result, the group of companies was incrementally reorganized after 1992. Having previously been regionally organized in a variety of individual entities, business activities were assigned to the three newly formed Strategic Business Units: Compression Technology, Automation Technology, and Drive Technology. At the same time, the oil, gas and process industries, the mechanical and plant engineering industry, and the automotive industry were defined as strategic business segments.

1995 saw further reorganization. In order to support continuing growth, the existing group of companies, which was run by HOERBIGER International in Vienna and their management, was restructured as a Group with a holding company and a central financial organization to be headquartered in Switzerland in the future. All the necessary conditions were created in Switzerland for developing the group of companies into a fully integrated corporate Group. HOERBIGER Holding AG in Rotkreuz, Switzerland, became the umbrella organization of the group of companies in 1997 and moved to Zug in 2000. The Group has since been managed by the Board of Directors of HOERBIGER Holding AG and the Executive Board.

Hanns HörBIger, Inventor and pIoneerIn 1895, the steel plate valve invented by Hanns Hörbiger was patented. The valve plate opens or closes; it opens when the gas pressure is high enough, and closes as long as the spring pressure is higher than the gas pressure.

The Hörbiger steel plate valve enabled the advancement of blast furnace technology and paved the way for the invention of modern piezochemistry. This made it one of the key technologies for the industrial development at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1900, Hanns Hörbiger, together with the engineer Friedrich Wilhelm Rogler, founded an engineering office in Budapest. This office was relocated to Vienna in 1903. In the years thereafter, Hanns Hörbiger devoted himself to continually enhancing the steel plate valve he had invented. His office issued licenses for use of the technology to business partners domestically and abroad.

In 1925, the engineering office became HOERBIGER & Co. trading company, head-quartered in Vienna.

alfred and martIna HörBIgerIn 1931, Alfred Hörbiger, the oldest son of the company’s founder, started the in-house production of valves in Vienna-Simmering. Between 1925 and 1945, a total of 171

patents were granted for HOERBIGER & Co. for inventions and developments in the field of compressor valves and controls. After the destruction of the Vienna production plant during the last year of the Second World War, and the sudden passing of Alfred Hörbiger, his wife Martina Hörbiger managed to rebuild the plant. The company’s product range, which until then was primarily comprised of compressor valves and controllers, was expanded by new business segments based on the core competencies in the fields of fluid technology and stamping technology. Initially, HOERBIGER was active in the pneumatics field. Just a short time later, it established new plants in Germany—in Schongau and neighboring Penzberg—for the production of steel disks for passenger car automatic transmission as well as for friction linings. The Pneumatics Division was then supplemented with the hydraulics segment.

culture. The results formed the basis of HOERBIGER’s corporate values: Pioneering Spirit, Courage, Closeness, and Fairness. The HOERBIGER umbrella brand displayed a new, modern logo in addition to the motto “Because performance counts”. In 2005 the corporate structure was systematically strengthened and expanded. With the expanded corporate functions Human Re sources, Communications, Re search & Develop -ment, Business Development and IT, the Group enhanced its profile, both internally and externally.

In 2006, the HOERBIGER Group replaced its prior public image as a mere group of companies. The three Strategic Business Units as well as the numerous foreign HOERBIGER entities, which previously operated in the market as independent companies, increasingly began to present their portfolio and services under the HOERBIGER umbrella brand in the following years.

In 2007 the HOERBIGER Group formulated a new vision: “We set standards”. In 2009 and 2010 the worldwide management team developed a new mission to accommodate the growth of the Group: EXCELLENCE & Focus.

In 2012 the Executive Board formulated a new cooperation and leadership guideline, titled “TOGETHER”.

In 2013, the Executive Board inaugurated the global STREAM program. The objective is to establish a worldwide standardized process logic for the HOERBIGER Group inside of three years, utilizing a highly tuned and efficiently structured IT architecture.

In 2015, the EXCELLENCE & Focus initiative was followed by the next step: Mission Excellence & Growth.

The HOERBIGER Foundation, Zug, Switzerland, is the majority shareholder and controls the Group. It protects the entrepreneurial heritage of the HOERBIGER Group, and ensures stability, self-reliance, and a future-oriented growth strategy.

By being allowed to make independent deci-sions and changes within a broad scope, each employee bears individual responsibility toward the company.

It is therefore important to us that decisions always have a lasting effect and are reliable.

responsIBIlItYIt is important to us to always keep the well-being of the entire Group in mind, aside from the responsibility for the specific task at hand.

We value diversity of knowledge, creativity and opinions because we are convinced that we can deliver peak performance both as individuals and as a team.

Cooperation across the boundaries of Strategic Business Units, functions and regions helps us to successfully cope with complex topics and tasks. We solve problems that stand in our way by every-one contributing unique skills and experience.

When things do not quite go the way they should, we expect each employee to take the initiative, if necessary across hierarchical levels. Mistakes, and at times even failures, do not throw us off our course. They inspire us to search for creative and innovative new approaches to solutions.

HOERBIGER cannot relieve any employee of the responsibility for their own plans for life and a balanced harmony between work and family. However, we especially advocate that young peo-ple, during their training phases with us, develop a personality which empowers them to assume responsibility in every respect—for themselves, for their families, and for their duties on the job.

communIcatIonTransparent communication is important to us. Clear agreements form the basis for our coopera-tion—internally and externally.

We deal with each other openly and honestly. When we hold discussions among colleagues, we provide feedback to each other.

When we share criticism with each other, we do not consider this to be a manifestation of a

lack of appreciation or recognition, but always a challenge to achieve even better results.

Our senior managers provide comprehensive information to the best of their knowledge and belief. They explain decisions so that all employ-ees understand what is involved.

leadersHIpWe count on a stable bond between senior man-agers and employees. This is based on respect, which in the truest sense of the word was devel-oped over long periods of cooperation, good com-munication, interest in different opinions, and competent interaction with differing cultures.

Employees expect senior managers to be cred-ible and demonstrate leadership conduct with honest intentions. They have the right to learn something from their managers and to partici-pate in their managers’ responsibility by way of delegation for the Group as a whole.

In order to develop strategically attractive busi-ness ideas and translate them into long-term corporate success, our senior managers set tar-gets with their employees which challenge their personal potential and encourage their individual development.

124

It is the people at HOERBIGER who assure the success of the company. This has always been the case, and applies even more so today. Their excellent achievements move the company ahead and safeguard its future.

Conformity is undesirable at HOERBIGER. As a trendsetter in technological niche markets, HOERBIGER is an enterprise in which new ideas need fertile ground.

With their dedication and performance, our employees have allowed us to rise from a family business with European roots to an international technology group.

Men and women, of varying ages, from very dif-ferent origins and with equally multifaceted cul-tural backgrounds, work together at HOERBIGER every day. We value this diversity. It goes without saying for us.

We believe that a modern guideline on coopera-tion and leadership by a cosmopolitan company such as HOERBIGER need not focus on common-place conceptions of leadership and cooperation.

We attach much more importance to the guid-ing principles that shape our corporate culture. It is these principles that make HOERBIGER a successful company around the globe, and at the same time an extremely attractive employer.

people at HoerBIgerWe succeed because our people take responsibil-ity for HOERBIGER’s success. We are successful because we believe in success.

We are interested in creative, entrepreneurially thinking minds that develop new ideas and then implement them, clearly and with structure; peo-ple who are willing to pull their weight, who are “Hands on!” and who are a part of HOERBIGER in every situation.

We keep our promises. Once we set goals, we are committed to achieving these goals—with all of our strength, determination, and abilities.

We want to work with people who share the same view and fit the corporate mold.

decIsIon and cHangeHOERBIGER grants great decision-making latitude not only to senior managers, but to each and every employee. This is the reason why our senior managers and employees think like entrepreneurs. The freedom with which we are allowed to independently make decisions motivates us.

Independent action is therefore desired, regard-less of the hierarchical levels or functions. When we are convinced that things require change, we do not hesitate but act.
