PARISH CHURCH ‘AT RISK’ The Parish Church of St.Mary Magdalene, S Molton has launched an appeal to raise £250,000. The PROTECT Appeal aims to renew the south aisle roof and make internal improvements. The Grade 1 listed building having served at the heart of S Mol-ton for many centuries, has now been placed on the Heritage at Risk register in their highest category as ‘in immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric.’ Churchwarden Bob Redwood ex-plained, “At a time of more regular church atten-dance, the cost of maintaining such an impressive building was not a problem. However changing times have placed the burden of ever increasing costs on a far smaller congregation than the build-ing was originally intended to serve. It is clearly still important, evidenced by the demand for baptisms, weddings and funerals. It also provides an irre-placeable setting for such services as Remem-brance Sunday.” www.protectappeal.weebly.com

Cancer Research U K held a Street Collection in S Molton on 11th June and raised £578.61. A House to House collection in S Molton and the surrounding area raised £1727.45. Our grateful thanks go to everyone who helped us raise such a wonderful sum, the continuing generosity of local people is very much appreciated.

Summer Song Fest South Molton Pannier Market 26 July 2015, 6pm This year’s big concert from South Molton Sings is a Summer Song Fest to be performed by many of the local choirs, schools and the Town Band under the direction of Tom Bayliss. With familiar num-bers from West Side Story and Abba it will be a lot of fun. The Fest will include food, fabulous lighting and fun activities for children with concert-goers encouraged to “bring a picnic” to help celebrate the spirit of this musical market town. Food and hot drinks are being supplied by Jack Chilli, That New Place, the WI and Verney’s Icecreams and there will also be a bar supplying soft and alcoholic drinks. Tickets available from the Tourist Informa-tion Centre at £5 or £15 for a family or can be pur-chased on the door. Please bring your own chairs. Funds raised at the Fest will be used to help set up “Musical Memories” a singing group for peo-ple living with dementia. Singing is one of the best activities for unlocking the memory; similar groups have proved both therapeutic and popular up and down the country. “Musical Memories” will start in the autumn. If you would like to volunteer to help on a Wednesday afternoon, “South Molton Sings” would be delighted to hear from you, please con-tact John Parkhouse on 01769 579840 jparkhouse [email protected] or Tryphena Huntingford on 01769 573722 [email protected].

The See Hear Centre has a Hearing Loss Group which meets once a month on the first Tuesday, at 2pm at Age Concern in South Molton. Informal, friendly support and advice is available at the meetings. A varied programme of events includes demonstrations of equipment, discussions about aspects of Hearing Loss and also talks by local experts, often related to health and social issues but sometimes just general interest. Recent speakers include a Fire Prevention Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, a former physiotherapist and also demonstrations of British Sign Language. It is very easy for people with a hearing loss to lose confidence and become withdrawn but, in the group, we understand each others’ challenges and so laugh and relax together. See Hear on Wheels (SHoW) is funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund; on the third Thursday each month, from 2-4pm, it is at Southley Road Lorry Park. This is easy-access bus carries a selection of equipment and even has a mini telephone ex-change so people with a Sight or Hearing Loss can try a selection of equipment which they can borrow to try at home for a month. If it is found helpful, the See Hear advisors can give details of suppliers or, if not quite as hoped, another piece of equipment can be trialed. Tubing and battery re-placement for NHS hearing aids is also available. You are welcome to visit the bus to learn more. SHoW also visits local villages to enable people without transport to access help. You are welcome to visit the See Hear Centre itself at 19a, Alexandra Road, Barnstaple, EX32 8BA where a much larger range of equipment is held. It has a drop-in on a Tuesday but appoint-ments can be made for other days. The Centre is a service of Living Options Devon, a user-led reg-istered charity. No charges are made either for the Hearing Loss Group or for advice and equipment trials but donations are very welcome. Further in-formation is available about any of our activities on 01271 373236 or 07790 473634, seehearnd @livingoptions.org. SMS 07831 515819

Thank you The South Molton Vintage Rally is organised and run by volunteers. The 2015 event proved to be challenging for all of us. Heavy rain on the Friday morning of the rally week-end and again on the Saturday night through to Sunday morning mak-ing the rally site at Combsland Cross quite soggy, however many club members and friends “worked their socks off” to enable the rally to con-tinue on the Sunday. May I convey a very sincere thank you to the many people who made the TEAM and so cheer-fully and willingly volun-teered their help and support during the weeks leading up to and especially through the rally weekend. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH. Paul Dayman, Chairman, S M Vintage Rally Club

A Driving Safer workshop at West Buckland Village Hall on Saturday July 11th, 7.30pm start. Since 2008, Devon County Council have been delivering these workshops to community groups aimed at keeping older driv-ers on the road safely for as long as possible. Driving is one of the most risky activities we are likely to do, and yet once we pass a test many of us have no further training. Driving techniques have changed over the years – as has the High-way Code! The free workshops last from 1-2 hours: informal, interactive, fun and very informa-tive. Topics covered include health, eyesight, medical conditions, Highway Code, the chal-lenges facing drivers today, advice on aids and some speed and hazard awareness. Participants will be given a free DVD and a workbook. Tea/Coffee provided. More information 01598 760437
