2017 WORLD ALL-STAR JOCKEYS
The World All-Star Jockeys (WASJ) is an international event launched by the Japan Racing
Association. Formerly called the World Super Jockeys Series since its establishment in 1987, it has
welcomed more than 200 top-caliber jockeys from Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia and
held over two days in late November or early December at either Tokyo or Hanshin Racecourse.
The event was given a new title, and was moved to the last weekend of August and to Sapporo
Racecourse in northern Japan in 2015.
This year’s event welcomes six outstanding jockeys from France, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong
and United Kingdom in joining one NAR (National Association of Racing; local public racing)
jockey and seven JRA jockeys in their bid for the title. A team competition was added to the regular
individual contest since 2015, in which the overseas and NAR jockeys form “Team WAS (World
All-Star)” and compete against “Team JRA” to attain the most points as a team.
The first two of the four-race series will be conducted on August 26th (Sat), while the third and
fourth will be held the following day.

Anthony Crastus
Anthony Crastus, already a familiar figure in Japan, having ridden under JRA’s short-term license
a number of times and becoming a grade-race winner during that time, is making his first visit in six
years for his World All-Star Jockeys debut.
Born in Paris, France, Crastus aspired to become a harness racing driver like his father Antoine but
became a flat racing jockey under his father’s advice and made his debut in 2001. He was winless in
his first three seasons but landed six wins in 2004 — his first winner was owned by his father —
and improved his score to 22 in the following year and placed 44th in the jockeys ranking, then
extended his wins further to 45 and ranked 17th in 2006. He was 30th with 31 wins in 2007 during
which he claimed his first group-race victory with Pearl Sky in the G3 Prix Exbury.
Given opportunities to ride horses trained by renowned trainer Ellie Lellouche and owned by
Wildenstein Stable, Crastus made steady progress to reach within the top ten jockeys in 2008 with
70 wins (ninth) and marked his personal best in the following year with 84 wins (eighth) including
seven group-race titles out of 794 rides while showing presence in G1 events—he was runner up in
the Prix de l’Opera and third in the Prix Vermeille with Board Meeting. He continued to fare well in
2010 with 76 wins (tenth) and just missed his first G1 title when second in both the Prix du Jockey
Club and the Grand Prix de Paris with Planteur. Although unable to make the top ten jockeys since,
Crastus claimed a German classic title in the 2014 German 1000 Guineas (G2) with Ajaxana.
He has also ridden enthusiastically overseas during the winter months, riding under a short-term
license in Japan in 2009, 2010 and 2011 during which he registered 22 wins out of 310 rides
including two grade-race victories in the Fairy Stakes and the Diamond Stakes with Dance Fantasia
and Cosmo Meadow, respectively, in 2011. He also rode Aventino for Japan in the 2012 Prix de
l’Arc de Triomphe. His most recent overseas stint was in the U.S.A. between December 2016 and
May this year.

Eurico Da Silva
Eurico Da Silva is a three-time champion jockey at Woodbine who is bidding for another jockey
title this season, currently at the top with 85 wins including three G2 and four G3 titles from 375
rides. He boasts a winning strike rate of 23% while finishing within the money in 60% of his total
rides. A talented and well experienced jockey riding in various countries, Da Silva takes part in the
World All-Star Jockeys for the first time as Canada’s representative to test his skills in Japan.
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Da Silva began racing quarter horses in his native country at twelve
years of age and enrolled in the Jockey School of Sao Paulo at sixteen. His riding talent was quickly
recognized early in his career as he became champion apprentice in his debut season and claimed
the Grande Premio Derby Paulista with Franz Post in 1994. He left his home country after 450 wins
over five seasons in search of more challenge overseas, rode in Macau for four seasons during
which he scored just under 300 wins, and moved onto to Canada in 2004.
Listed among the top ten jockeys with 83 wins in 2007, Da Silva progressed to mark over 100 wins
to rank fourth in the following year then claimed his first champion title in 2010 with 190 wins. He
repeated the feat in 2015 with 201 wins and reached his personal best last year with 202 wins for his
third champion title. He was also the winner of the Sovereign Award Outstanding Jockey in the
three years as leading jockey as well as when he was the national leader in earnings in 2013.
Major titles during his career in Canada include consecutive Queen’s Plate titles (2009, Eye of the
Leopard; 2010, Big Red Mike), Prince of Wales Stakes (2014, Coltimus Prime), the Breeders’
Stakes (2013, Up With the Bird), the Woodbine Oaks (2016, Neshama) and the G1 Northern Dancer
Turf Stakes (2013, Forte Dei Marmi).
Da Silva also scored a G1 title in the U.S., claiming the 2013 Alcibiades Stakes with My
Conquestadory and has been successful in positioning himself among the top 22 North American
jockeys in earnings since being ranked 12th in 2010, while spending his winter months in Singapore
(2007/2008/2009) and Hong Kong (2016). He also has experience riding in Japan, having ridden Up
With the Birds in the 2014 Japan Cup (16th).

Katelyn Mallyon
The 2016/17 season has been a memorable season for Australian jockey Katelyn Mallyon as she
captured her first G1 title with third-pick Silent Sedition in the William Reid Stakes in March. She
also took part in the G1 Melbourne Cup for the first time with Assign (finished 19th) with whom
she won the G2 Herbert Power Stakes last October. She also won her second consecutive title in the
G2 Rubiton Stakes in February this year. She will be making her debut in Japan, hoping to become
the first female jockey to win the overall title in the World All-Star Jockeys.
Born in Seymour, north of Melbourne, Katelyn grew up in a horseracing family—her grandfather
Mick Mallyon was a top jockey in Victoria with three Caulfield Cup titles, her father Brett and
mother Mary are also former jockeys and her brother Andrew is still actively riding in
Victoria—riding ponies and setting her aspiration to become a jockey from a young age. She started
working as an apprentice jockey at her father’s stable and made her debut at Warracknabeal
Racecourse in August 2010.
She claimed 23 wins in Melbourne during the 2011/12 season based in Flemington Racecourse to
become the first female jockey to capture the Victorian Apprentice title. While a serious fall toward
the end of the season forced her to miss the majority of the following year, leaving her with only six
wins, she was back on her feet in the 2013/14 season to reclaim the title again with 31 wins, and
was sixth in the overall jockeys’ rankings.
Though her performances in the following three seasons were not as brilliant, partly due to injuries,
she made her first G1 debut in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in September 2014 then captured her
first group-race win in the G2 Rubiton Stakes in 2016 with Heatherly, with whom she finished third
in the G1 Oakleigh Plate.

Kerrin McEvoy
Kerrin McEvoy’s fruitful 2016/17 season was not only highlighted by his second Melbourne Cup
trophy claimed with Almandin, but continued to flourish as he was seen claiming six of his nine G1
titles in a three month span between March and June. With over 60 G1 wins captured in five
countries, the internationally renowned rider is set out to make a name for himself this time in Japan
in his WAJS debut this summer.
His father, uncles and brothers being mostly jockeys, McEvoy was born in Streaky Bay, South
Australia, and began his career as an apprentice rider for his maternal grandfather and trainer in
1997 before relocating to the Melbourne district to ride for Peter Hayes, one of the top trainers there.
He quickly rose to fame in 2000 when he became the second youngest jockey to claim the
Melbourne Cup, his first G1 victory, with Brew. Although spending some time abroad in the
2002/03 season, he topped the Victorian jockey leaderboard and was presented the Scobie Breasley
Medal.
After increasing his rides in Dubai, McEvoy was given the opportunity to ride in Europe for
Godolphin in 2004. He collected 10 G1 titles in Europe such as the 2004 St Leger Stakes with Rule
of Law, the 2005 St James’s Palace Stakes with Shamardal and the 2005 Prix Jacques le Marois
with Dubawi. He tallied 93 wins in 2007 and ranked eighth in the United Kingdom.
Returning to his homeland upon being retained as Godolphin’s rider in Australia in 2008, he rode
many winners such as Sepoy, with whom he claimed the Golden Slipper Stakes and three other G1
wins in 2011, and Guelph, whom he guided to victory in the 2013 Sires Produce Stakes along with
three more G1 triumphs. McEvoy finished the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons in third in the
standings and shared honors with Hugh Bowman as the leading Group One jockey for the 2012/13
season.
In 2013, he won the International Jockeys’ Championship title in Hong Kong. He also led the Rest
of the World team as captain in the 2015 Shergar Cup at Ascot while finishing second in the Silver
Saddle standings for individuals. He will head for Japan following his second shot at the Shergar
Cup earlier this month.

Joao Moreira
“Magic Man” Joao Moreira continues to mesmerize the fans with his magic riding skills as he
again renewed his record for most seasonal victories in Hong Kong to 171 wins in the 2016/17
season and defended his champion title for three consecutive years with a gap of 64 wins. His
performances with Japanese horses are also impressive—he claimed the 2016 Hong Kong Vase
with Satono Crown and the 2017 Queen Elizabeth II Cup with Neorealism in Hong Kong as well as
the 2017 Dubai Turf with Vivlos. He also led Rapper Dragon to become the first horse to win all
three legs of Hong Kong’s Four-Year-Old Classic Series this season.
Born in Curitiba in the southern part of Brazil, Moreira began his jockey career in 2000, based in
Sao Paulo where he rode more than 1,000 winners. Relocating to Singapore in 2009, the Brazilian
jockey finished third in the jockey rankings with 69 wins that year and secured four consecutive
premiership titles between 2010 and 2013—he registered a record of 116 annual wins in 2010 and
further renewed the number to 206 in 2012. He also accomplished a feat of scoring a perfect eight
wins out of eight starts on September 6, 2013.
While renewing various records in Singapore, his move to Hong Kong in October 2013 proved to
be another great success. He was ranked second in the jockey rankings in the 2013/14 season with
97 wins despite missing the first month. He climbed to the top with 145 wins the following season,
renewing the record of 114 wins set by 13-time champion Douglas Whyte in 2005/06 and further
renewed the number to 168 wins in 2015/16.
While marking 13 G1 wins in Hong Kong such as the 2014 Hong Kong Mile and the 2015
Champions Mile on board Able Friend, with whom he has claimed five G1 victories, he is also
recognized abroad as the winner of the Al Quoz Sprint, the Dubai Golden Shaheen, the Epsom
Handicap and the Coolmore Stud Stakes in 2014 as well as the 2015 Newmarket Handicap and the
2017 Oakleigh Plate.
Moreira rode in Japan for the first time in the 2014 Yasuda Kinen, finishing sixth with Glorious

Tom Queally
Tom Queally, best known for his partnership with the legendary Frankel, claimed the G1 Diamond
Jubilee Stakes held at Royal Ascot in June this year on board The Tin Man, with whom he won the
G1 British Champions Sprint Stakes last October. He will aim to land his first international jockeys’
championship title in his first participation in the World All-Star Jockeys.
Born in Dungarvan, Ireland as the son of Irish trainer Declan Queally, Tom started riding ponies
from early in his childhood. He made his debut as a jockey in 2000, apprenticed to Pat Flynn, and
claimed the Irish champion apprentice title with 28 wins that year while still at school. After
finishing his education, he joined the yard of the leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien where he
claimed the G3 Ballysax Stakes in 2003, then moved to the UK in 2004 where he rode for trainer
David Loder and claimed the apprentice title there with 59 wins.
His breakthrough came in 2009 when he won his first G1 title in the Golden Jubilee Stakes with Art
Connoisseur. He was first jockey to Newmarket-based trainer Sir Henry Cecil and guided many of
his horses to victory—Midday, with whom he also marked three consecutive Nassau Stakes titles
from 2009 to 2011 and the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and Twice Over, with whom he
won three G1 titles including the 2009 and 2010 Champion Stakes. Queally also rode in Frankel’s
all 14 undefeated career starts including the 2000 Guineas—Tom’s first classic title—but turned
freelance after Cecil’s death in the spring of 2013.
He tied for fourth in Hong Kong’s International Jockeys’ Championship in 2012 and took part in
the 2014 Shergar Cup as the captain of the Great Britain & Ireland Team. This will be his second
visit to Japan following 2012 when he rode under a short-term license between January and
February, during which he claimed two wins out of 58 starts.

Shogo Nakano
After celebrating his 400th career-win on May 30 this year, Shogo Nakano, a jockey of Funabashi
Racecourse situated east of Tokyo in Chiba prefecture, secured his seat in the WASJ by
demonstrating a near perfect performance in the Super Jockeys Trial with the highest points ever,
notching three wins and a second in the four-leg contest to decide the NAR delegate. The young
emerging jockey aims to become the first NAR jockey since 2005 to claim the JRA international
jockeys’ competition.
Born in Toyama prefecture, Nakano grew up a stranger to horse racing but was introduced to
horseback riding by a relative and took up the sport at a private club when he was around nine. He
was admitted to NAR’s Racing Education Center in 2007 and made his debut on May 4th in 2009,
marking his first win a month later. He scored a total of six wins in his debut year at Funabashi
Racecourse and improved his wins to 12 the following year.
He claimed the apprentice jockeys’ championship competition for both JRA and NAR affiliated
jockeys in the beginning of 2011 but struggled to further improve with six wins that year and the
following season with five. In 2013, he marked only two wins at Funabashi but gained beneficial
experience away from his home ground, racing at Mombetsu (Hokkaido) and Kasamatsu (Gifu)
Racecourse for a limited period of time where he registered eight and four wins, respectively.
His performances steadily began to improve as he ended the 2014 season with 19 wins, standing
10th on the Funabashi jockeys rankings, and advanced to fourth in the standings with 40 wins the
following year. In the South Kanto area, which consists of not only Funabashi, but also Ohi (Tokyo),
Kawasaki (Kanagawa) and Urawa (Saitama) Racecourses, he notched a total of 82 wins, including
his first major title in the 2015 Saitama Shimbun Eikan Sho, and finished 10th in the South Kanto
jockey standings. Last season he was runner-up in Funabashi with 48 wins while he capped off the
season fourth in the South Kanto area with 159.
The 25-year-old rider made his JRA-race debut this year in March where he marked a third in one
of his six starts and was given a chance to ride in his first JRA grade-race, the Yayoi Sho (G2).

Keita Tosaki
Keita Tosaki, who reigned as JRA’s national champion for three consecutive seasons, continues as
the current leader in the national standings. Treating all of his rides with the same attitude and
giving his best regardless of the grade of the race, Tosaki has scored four JRA grade-race titles as
well as major victories in the NAR circle, the Empress Hai and the TCK Jo-o Hai. While yet to win
a G1 title this year, he just missed by a neck margin with Best Warrior in the February Stakes. The
JRA Award winner of the Most Valuable Jockey, who has not failed to exceed 100 wins every year
since becoming a JRA-based jockey in 2013, hopes to improve on his third-place finish in the
WASJ in 2014 and 2015.
Tosaki’s career began in 1998 at Ohi Racecourse as a stable jockey for trainer Kazutaka Katori. He
rode his first winner in April that year, scored his 100th win in 2002 and landed his first major title
in the Twinkle Lady Sho in 2005. In the following year, he nearly doubled his wins to 123, then
rose to third in NAR’s national jockey rankings with 212 wins in 2007, the year when he scored his
first JRA win at Hanshin Racecourse. This began a remarkable string of success for the four-time
NAR leader of 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 who was given more opportunities on JRA mounts and
scored his first JRA grade-race win in 2010 in the Musashino Stakes followed by his first JRA-G1
victory in the 2011 Yasuda Kinen with Real Impact.
Transferred to JRA racing in 2013, Tosaki quickly placed himself among the top five jockeys
nationally with 113 wins in 2013, including a G1 title with Red Reveur in the Hanshin Juvenile
Fillies. He was leading jockey by a comfortable 10-win margin in 2014 with 146 wins and led by
nine again to defend his title with 130 wins in the following season. He reached a personal best of
187 wins for his third champion title last year but faced a close battle against Christophe Lemaire
who concluded the season just one win short for second. His major career titles include the 2014
Arima Kinen with Gentildonna, the 2015/16 Victoria Mile and 2016 Sprinters Stakes with Straight
Girl.

Hiroyuki Uchida
NAR-turned-JRA veteran jockey Hiroyuki Uchida reached a milestone of 1,000th JRA win in
October last year and was ranked sixth in the national leaderboard with 89 JRA wins while landing
a G1 title in NAR’s year-end Tokyo Daishoten with Apollo Kentucky. He continues to fare well
this year, currently standing fifth in the national ranking with a grade-race victory in JRA’s Lord
Derby Challenge Trophy with Logi Chalice. He also claimed NAR’s Tokyo Sprint and the
Kurofune Sho.
Debuted as an NAR jockey in 1989, Uchida was counted among the top jockeys by 2000 and
became the NAR national champion for the first time in 2004 with 385 wins—a title he retained for
the following three seasons. In 2006, he set a record of 524 annual wins—463 in NAR and 61 in
JRA—the most in Japanese horseracing history. During his career as an NAR jockey, he claimed
over 120 wins in JRA races, which included his first JRA-G1 victory in the 2007 NHK Mile Cup
with Pink Cameo.
Uchida transferred to JRA on March 1, 2008 where he continued to perform well, finishing second
in the jockey rankings with 123 wins that year. He concluded the 2009 season on top of the
rankings with 146 wins out of 975 starts. While ranking second with 118 wins the following year,
he achieved the most wins by combining his NAR victories to receive the JRA Award for Best
Jockey (Races Won) for two consecutive years. He continues to be ranked within the top 10 every
year since, except for 2011 and 2014.
While claiming eleven JRA-G1 titles including the 2008 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) with
Oken Bruce Lee, the 2010 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) with Eishin Flash and the 2013&14
Victoria Mile with Verxina, he is most known for his partnership with Gold Ship with whom he won
the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), the Kikuka Sho, the Arima Kinen in 2012 and the
Takarazuka Kinen in 2013.
He has participated in JRA’s international jockeys’ competition seven times—once as an NAR

Hironobu Tanabe got a head start with 16 wins, which brought him on the top of the national
leaderboard for the month of January. Though this blistering pace has slowed down since, he is
accumulating wins at a steady pace toward achieving his first 100 annual wins. He is currently
ranked sixth in the national ranking. While still without a G1 title this year, he has so far registered
two graded wins—the Keisei Hai with Komano Impulse in January and the Nikkei Sho with
Sciacchetra in March—and was a neck short of defending the Yasuda Kinen title with Logotype in
June. Tied at third in his first participation in JRA’s international jockeys’ championship in 2014
with one win and a third, he hopes to outdo this performance in the coming competition.
Influenced by his father who was a horseracing enthusiast, Tanabe entered the JRA Horse Racing
School and made his debut in March 2002 for trainer Kazuo Konishi. He landed his long-awaited
first win in his 63rd JRA start in August and went on to score eight wins that year.
After hovering at 10-20 annual wins for the next six years, he gradually improved his score,
marking 33 wins in 2009 and 37 in 2010. With requests from established stables starting to come in,
he more than doubled his annual wins and concluded the 2011 season with his personal high of 88
wins and was seventh in the national ranking. He also landed his first grade-race victory in the
Antares Stakes (G3) with Gold Blitz in April that year.
Though his wins dropped to 52 in 2012, he established himself as one of the top jockeys after
bouncing back with 88 wins (ninth) in 2013 and capturing his first G1 title when causing a major
upset victory in the February Stakes with the least favorite Copano Rickey in 2014. He also upset
heavily favored Maurice in the 2016 Yasuda Kinen with eighth-pick Logotype in a gate-to-wire
victory.

Christophe Lemaire
Christophe Lemaire became only the second jockey—foreign and Japanese jockeys combined—to
accomplish a record of three G1 victories over three consecutive weeks which tied fellow French
jockey Olivier Peslier who was the first jockey to land three in a row in 2001. Lemaire, now in his
third season as a full-time JRA jockey, began his string of G1 victories with Admire Lead in the
Victoria Mile followed by the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) with Soul Stirring then the Tokyo
Yushun (Japanese Derby) with Rey de Oro. His Oaks-Derby double in a single season is also noted
as being the first in 42 years and only four jockeys have accomplished the feat before him. Already
exceeding 600 career-wins, Lemaire aims to reach the top in the World All-Star Jockeys in which
his best score was a seventh last year and in 2009 out of three challenges.
Born in Chantilly as the son of Patrice Lemaire, a leading jump jockey in the ‘80s, Christophe was
riding horses before he was walking. He began as an amateur rider in 1996 at 16, exercising horses
for well-established trainers such as Andre Fabre and Jean-Paul Gallorini, and started riding
professionally after acquiring his license in 1999. He scored his first G1 title in France in the 2003
Prix Jean Prat. He was soon among the top jockeys at home and became a prominent international
rider with G1 titles in France, England, the UAE, Australia, Hong Kong and the United States.
Lemaire had been racing in Japan every year since 2002 under short-term licenses. His major JRA
titles during that time include the 2005 Arima Kinen with Heart’s Cry, the 2008 Queen Elizabeth II
Commemorative Cup with Little Amapola, the 2008 Japan Cup Dirt with Kane Hekili, the 2009
Japan Cup with Vodka and his second Japan Cup Dirt in 2013 with Belshazzar.
Kicking off his debut season in 2015, a full three months later than the other jockeys, he still
managed to notch 112 wins to stand fourth on the leaderboard and register the highest winning
percentage to receive the JRA Award for Best Jockey (Winning Average). He was just one win short
of claiming the Best Jockey (Races Won) with 186 wins during 2016, but secured his second JRA
Award for winning average with a strike rate of 23.7% and added another title for Money Earned
with G1 victories in the NHK Mile Cup with Major Emblem, the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies with Soul
Stirring, the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) and the Arima Kinen with Satono Diamond among
other graded stakes that totaled 13 in all.

Mirco Demuro
Mirco Demuro continues to impress the Japanese racing circle in his third full season as an official
JRA jockey, currently as the national leader in earnings and strike rate and runner-up in wins. He
already has claimed 10 grade-race titles this year including G1 titles in the February Stakes with
Gold Dream and the Takarazuka Kinen with Satono Crown. Having ridden in Japan over a 16-year
span in a number of short-term riding stints, he has established new records as one of the first
foreign JRA jockeys, already reaching his 700th career win on July 29.
Debuting in 1994 at age 15, Demuro became champion apprentice in Italy with 79 wins in the
following year and was leading jockey for four consecutive years between 1997 and 2000—he
became the first teenage champion in Italy. His first group-race victory came in 1998 in the G3
Premio Primi Passi, and his first G1 title in the Gran Premio del Jockey Club in 1999.
He started riding under a short-term license in Japan in 1999 and found his riding skills well
appreciated. Given opportunities on talented mounts, he landed 31 grade-race titles which include
10 G1 victories between 2001 and 2014, most notably his first two G1 Classic titles in the 2003
Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) and the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) with Neo Universe,
the 2008 Japan Cup with Screen Hero and the 2010 Arima Kinen with Victoire Pisa with whom he
also landed a historical first success for Japan in the 2011 Dubai World Cup.
Kicking off his career as an official JRA jockey in March 2015, he registered 118 wins in a
ten-month period to stand third in the national jockey standings, just 12 wins short of the leader. He
did, however, top all jockeys in purses to become a JRA Award winner for Best Jockey (Money
Earned) in his debut season with 11 grade-race titles including four G1 victories such as the Satsuki
Sho and the Tokyo Yushun with Duramente. His 132 wins during 2016, among which his four G1
titles included the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) with Jeweler, positioned him in fourth place in
the national standings.
He represented Italy in his first challenge in this series in 2012, finishing eighth overall, was
eleventh in 2015 as a JRA jockey and won his first WASJ title last year with two wins and two
fifths in the four-race contest.

Yutaka Take
Yutaka Take continues to produce impressive results as Japan’s longstanding top jockey and has
appeared in all JRA-G1 events this year except for the Takamatsunomiya Kinen when he was in
Dubai. Listing his name again on JRA’s record as the inaugural winner of the newly-upgraded G1
Osaka Hai with Kitasan Black, he partnered the same horse to a consecutive victory in the Tenno
Sho (Spring). Take also finished second and third in this year’s Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas)
and Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), respectively, and continues to rewrite JRA’s history
book, most recently with an unprecedented 3,900 career wins accomplished on June 24.
Take rode his first winner in his debut year in 1987 when he scored 69 wins which earned him the
season’s JRA Award for Best Jockey (Newcomer). He has and continues to renew practically every
record available, not to mention the 2005 record of 212 wins in a single season. He has also reigned
as leading jockey 18 times, including nine consecutive years from 1992 to 2000 and seven from
2002 to 2008. He has enjoyed successful riding spells around the world and has achieved G1 wins
in France, England, Dubai and Hong Kong, most recently in the 2015 Hong Kong Cup and the 2016
Prix d’Ispahan with A Shin Hikari.
In 2005, he excited the nation by landing the Japanese Triple Crown on the legendary colt Deep
Impact who brought him four other G1 titles. In 2007, the star jockey’s career was highlighted by
another extraordinary feat, breaking another JRA record for most career victories—2,944
wins—and posting his 3,000th win at Kyoto Racecourse on November 3.
Reaching 3,500 wins in January 2013, Take celebrated his 100th G1 (NAR and overseas included)
victory when claiming the Mile Championship with Tosen Ra in November that year. He has a
record of 316 grade-race wins in JRA alone, among which 73 are at G1 level. Since his first JRA
Award as a newcomer, he has won 18 jockey titles for Races Won, 16 for Money Earned, 11 for
Winning Average and nine Grand Prizes, given to those that have dominated all three jockey
categories in the same season.
Take has participated in JRA’s international jockeys’ competition 22 times since 1988, having
finished a runner-up overall seven times including last year and capturing the title in 1992.

Yuichi Fukunaga
In his 22nd season this year, two-time champion jockey Yuichi Fukunaga reached a milestone on
July 15 by becoming the eighth jockey in JRA history to register 2,000 career wins. In the national
jockey standings, he is currently fourth with two grade-race victories and a runner-up effort aboard
Cheval Grand in the G1 Tenno Sho (Spring). He also won NAR’s Teio Sho with K T Brave.
Following the footsteps of his father, former jockey Yoichi Fukunaga, he made an impressive debut
in 1996, winning his first two career starts and was named JRA Award Best Jockey (Newcomer)
with 53 wins. After capturing his first grade-race win the following year, he claimed his first G1
victory in 1999 with Primo Ordine in the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas). He was ranked among
the top twelve jockeys claiming over 80 annual wins since 2000, and has been within the top five
from 2010 with over 100 wins. Finally emerging to the top in 2011 and 2013, he was awarded the
JRA Award in Winning Average in 2011 and in Races Won and Money Earned in 2013.
Among his 124 grade-race wins, 20 are G1 victories including six classic titles—two Oka Sho
(1999 Prix Modine, 2005 Rhein Kraft), three Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) (2004 Daiwa el Cielo,
2005 Cesario, 2007 Robe Decollete), and the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) (2013 Epiphaneia).
His overseas stints include the 2001 Hong Kong Mile (G1), two consecutive Queen Elizabeth II
Cup (G1) titles in 2002 and 2003 with Eishin Preston, the 2005 American Oaks Invitational Stakes
with Cesario and the Dubai Duty Free with Just a Way in 2014.
In his eighth JRA international jockey’s competition appearance this year, the 40-year-old jockey
hopes to top his personal best of finishing second overall in 2014 while his most recent participation
was in 2015 in which he finished seventh.
