FROM THE PRINCIPAL]S DESK:Last year I made an unfortunate mistake when I promised the students to spend a day on the roof of the school if test scoresmet the goals because students met all of the goals set by the state (math increased about 7 points!). This means that one day

before testing I plan to honor that promise and spend the day on the roof. Also, for this years test students will vote again forwhat I do if scores improve. As of today Thursday, February 02, 2012, we have 59 days of school left. End of year testing will

be April 14-30. Therefore, we have less than 50 school days before testing. Everyone has been working hard to be prepared.Keep up the good work. We are ahead of other schools in our district on AR books even though they have more students :) GOWOLVERINES!!!The academic team has been practicing each Tuesday, and we appreciate Yvonne Jones, Sandy Lewis, and Phyllis Cootsvolunteering their time. Basketball homecoming was a success, congratulations to Queen Breanna Shepherd and King ChaseAdams. Next week is the Boys Basketball tournament and cheer competitions. Good luck teams. There is a dance scheduledtomorrow night, February 3, 2012. There is a play scheduled for Thursday, February 16 in the school gym after lunch. Archerywill also begin practice next week. The coaches will be Clarence Jr. Maggard and Johnny Ray Johnson. ESS will begin nextThursday; buses will run.Our school has taken a new look with the construction nearly complete. I would like to thank the Leslie County Board ofEducation for seeing this project to completion. I would still like to see an addition to connect the gym to the cafeteria (rooms 7and 8), new ceiling tiles in some classrooms, and a sign out front.

The UNITE Club is staying active doingcommunity service projects and learning reasonsand ways to not do drugs. To celebrate the 100thday of school the Unite Club came up with 100things to do instead of drugs. Some of myfavorites were talk with friends, eat curly fries, and to clean your room. The theme seemed tosay, we would rather do anything thandrugseven clean our rooms! The UNITE Club isalways trying to think of new ways for communityservice projects so for the 100th day celebration wechose to do 100 Pennies for PAWS. We haveraised almost $100! For every donation we postedthe names each student with the names of all theiranimals. I found out our students have lots of dogand cats as well as fish, horses, goats, chickens, hamsters and even a hedgehog! HLS students love

animals. We have lots of ideas for the comingmonths. Stay tuned!

Some Questions and Answers about the FluWhat is the influenza (the flu)? A virus thcauses the flu and can be broken into thrdifferent types: A, B and C. Influenza can

transmitted through air droplets, contact wnasal secretions, or an infected surface. Peopoften talk about having the flu, but people wthe true flu are REALLY sick! What are some symptoms of true influenz

Sudden onset of high fever (102-106Fheadache, chills, sore throat, muscle aches, dhacking cough. Occasionally one can svomiting, diarrhea, and croup in youchildren.

How is it diagnosed? It can be diagnossimply by symptoms alone. However, coming to see your provider a rapid flu test c

be performed to give a more definitive resuThis test consists of a q-tip swabbed in onenose. This can tell if you have type A or influenza or neither at all. This test is helpfu

but not always 100% accurate. Your providwill mostly go on your symptoms.

How is it treated? Tamiflu is a wonderfmedicine when used within the first 48 houof symptoms. However, after 48 hours Tamiloses its effectiveness and there is no othmedicine available to treat the virus. Managisymptoms with over the counter medicinesthe best form of relief, along with some mu

needed rest. CHILDREN AND TEENAGERMUST AVOID ANY ASPIRIN WITINFLUENZA SYMPTOMS for risk of ReyeSyndrome.

How can I prevent it? The best way is to gyour flu vaccine every year! Continue frequehand washing, covering a cough or sneezavoiding contact with those who are sick, astaying home if you are sick.

    A Visit to the Challenger

Center By: Mackenzie AdamsOn Wednesday, January 25, 2012 Mrs. Mitchells 4 thgrade class went to the Challenger Center. Theywere 18 different activities in the museum. One ofthe activities that we to do was control a rover.Another on is we go to make a crater and see whatthe light source on the Mars looks like and go in theA-Cube. The A-Cube was the funniest one. Whenyou walked in the A-Cube you had to put on glassesand different shoes. It was like a big computer screenand it was 3-D too. Once we had completed thestations we sat down to watch two fourth gradersinterview an astronaut and a coal miner. Their jobswere very similar. After we finished we got to go thegifts shop. There was lots of really odd stuff andfood to buy. After that we went to eat lunch over atmy moms school (Hazard Community College). Wegot to go upstairs to do another activity. We got a

plastic container filled with birdseed with differentcolor beads and bbs scattered throughout. The beadsrepresented different minerals needed for humans tosurvive on Mars. We used a serving spoon, slottedserving spoons and magnets to get all the different

beads out. I loved getting to go to the ChallengerCenter!
