“Congratulations Year 12. As graduatestudents you have come to the end ofa chapter and a very important one atthat. I hope when you revisit the pagesof time in your memory and reflect atall the years you have been at HenryKendall that the pages reveal happyand exciting times but moreimportantly, growth in confidence andknowledge. Whatever the chapter of your life youwill realise that learning will always beimportant because learning gives youknowledge, knowledge gives youconfidence. The greater the knowledgethe greater the confidence.  Thegreater the confidence the greater thesuccess.  I hope that we at HenryKendall have inspired in you a love oflearning and an understanding of thepower of knowledge. When you think about leaving schooland entering a new chapter of yourlives, think also of how you havechanged over the years since you firstcame here to Henry Kendall High.  Youhave grown in stature and confidence.You now have ideas and thoughts thatyou didn't know existed when you firstentered this school. Now you havediᵭ됀erent aspirations and today you areon your way to making them becomereal.

This year has marked for you a greattransition from students to graduatesand all that entails. This year has seenbig changes for you. You have had totake on more responsibility and youhave become more adult and mature.You are wiser and surer of yourself. Ahead of you lies the future whether inuniversity, TAFE or employment. Thisis exciting and you should have a greatfeeling of achievement. I think you willagree that all the hard work and thelong hours of study were certainlyworth it. I hope too that you will taketime today to reflect upon the helpand support you have had these yearsfrom your families. They have workedhard for your success as have all thestaᵭ됀 whose responsibility it was toensure that you reached yourpotential. All of those who havecontributed to your success deserveyour thanks. You have been taught bypeople who are rich in knowledge;passionate for their work andcommitted to helping you excel, o宰ւenat the expense of their own personaltime. The ability to make choices and makedecisions is, in part, what we arecelebrating in your graduation. Thosechoices, of course, extend to far morethan what to eat or what to wear. Theyextend to the great freedoms anddecisions that we make that actuallychange and alter our lives.

When you have the time to reflect onit, consider this quote from - "ThePathfinder" by Nicholas Lore;“It takes courage to be the author ofyour life. When you are strugglingthrough one of the diᵭ됀icult parts ofturning your dreams into reality, youmay wonder why you always get stuckwith having to put up with so muchfear and uncertainty. Why, you wonder,couldn't I feel more courageous, likethose other people do? You don't feelcourageous because courage is not anemotion. There is no such thing asfeeling "courageous". It is an imaginaryemotion. Courage consists of doingwhat you said you would do evenwhen you don't want to. In the face ofadversity you have a choice to be thedelegate of either your commitmentsor your feelings. It's as simple and asdiᵭ됀icult as that.” I hope that in years to come, to lookback at Henry Kendall High with thefondest of memories. Memories ofyour teachers, your peers, and yourlearning and you reflect on those staᵭ됀and peers who have made a diᵭ됀erencein your life. On behalf of the staᵭ됀 at Henry KendallHigh school I wish each and every oneof you the very best of luck and thehappiness of a productive life inwhatever pathway it is that you havethe courage to follow!!” Mr Andrew Backhouse - Principal

best years ofyour life. Somany peoplehave helped youget to this point,your parents,carers, friends,family andteachers, someof whom will bemelancholy, orperhaps a littlerelieved. Many

teachers here have given up their timeto help you on your HSC journey. Thismay have been before or a宰ւer school,during free periods and school breaktimes. I know you will join me inthanking them all for the support,motivation and guidance they haveprovided. For some of you, school has been moreof a social exercise where you’ve had alot of fun, for others it has beenextremely stressful. For the majority ofyou though, it has been a mixture ofthe two. You have shared milestonestogether, fun and laughter, hook upsand break ups and of course, sadnessand loss.

Graduation Program...

Parents, the hardest part is about tobegin. Your children are about toembark on one of the most stressfuland exciting times of their lives. Keepsupporting them, motivating them andmost importantly feeding them, theyare almost there. I’m sure you’ve allblinked and found yourself here,wondering where the time has gone. Sitting your HSC is one of the greatestaccomplishments that you willpersonally achieve, and I sincerelyhope that there are many more tocome your way. I was fortunateenough in August of last year to takeover from the wonderful Gae Hobson,who was your Year Adviser from thestart of your high school journey. Iknow that Ms Gae Hobson wishes youthe very best for your HSC and thefuture. Mr Bob Cox was the deputywho welcomed you to Henry Kendall,and Mrs Natalie Wearne has steppedinto this role since Bob’s retirement inearly 2015. I would like to thank Boband Natalie for their support andguidance. Your advice has been greatlyvalued by myself and the parents andcaregivers of Year 12. Since taking over, I’ve seen significantchanges in the cohort, and it has beenan absolute pleasure getting to knowthese amazing young adults. I am soproud of you, you are a credit to HenryKendall and all it stands for. Many ofyou have put in the eᵭ됀ort and havereaped the rewards with marks thatshould hold you in good stead for theHSC. I sincerely hope you all achievethe results that you are aiming for. Beproud of yourselves Year 12, of all yourachievements so far, remember thatyour ATAR or HSC result doesn’t definethe person you are. Determination willget you through whatever path youhave chosen for yourself. Nothing worth having comes easy -don’t rest on your laurels, keep to yourstudy plan and keep positive, its notup to you. Use the skills you havelearnt from your wonderful teachersand keep the momentum going. Weare all here for you if you need us.

 Change is natural, change is inevitable,change is good, its something to beembraced and its coming your way. I’m going to have a corny momenthere, but its your life’s journey andonly you hold the map. Some of youalready know what you want, othershave no idea and that’s completelyfine. Travel, work, study-maybe not inthat particular order. There are  just afew things I urge you to remember;

1. If you try your best in everythingyou do, you will always be thebest you can be.

2. Do things with passion or don’tdo it at all.

3. Keep an open mind in thepursuit of happiness; no matterhow bad things get, be willing towork hard and keep smiling. Itwill all be ok.

And finally, the best way to understandlife is to live it. In a few short weeks theworld is your oyster, and you will neverhave to write about Discovery again,providing you don’t train as an Englishteacher and return to the high schoolyou went to….So year 12, congratulations again andremember“You have brains in your head. Youhave feet in your shoes. You can steeryourself any direction you choose.You’re on your own. And you knowwhat you know. And you, are the onewho’ll decide where to go”. Mrs Jade Draper - Year 12 Adviser

English ReportWe have just farewelled an amazinggroup of students – Year 12: the Classof 2016. It has been a pleasure and aprivilege to have been part of theirjourney for the last 6 years. Theemotional, intellectual and creativediscoveries they have made, whetherthey were sudden and unexpected, orthe result of deliberate and carefulplanning, have been the result of theircuriosity and their desire to challengebeliefs about themselves and theworld. (And Year 12 Advanced andStandard, if you are reading this andrecognise your Area of Studyprescription statements – well done!Feel free to use this as your thesisstatement.) Seriously though, I havebeen impressed with this group’s goodhumour, focus and perseverance. Bestwishes for the HSC exams and for theworld beyond the gates of HenryKendall High School.

Discovery. The first assessment task isscheduled for Term 4, Week 9 (date tobe confirmed) and will consist of aspeech and a written response. English hasa unique place in the HSC as the onlymandatory subject, and the onlysubject which must be included in theATAR calculation. Year 10 English will be sitting a formalexamination at the beginning of Week5 next term. This two hour long paperwill assess their reading and writingskills, and will require an extendedessay response to a question on thegenre text they have been studyingthis term. New Trikes &

Hand CycleVicarious Velodrama is a group of localcycling enthusiasts who raised moneythis year to purchase bikes forstudents at HKHS in the SpecialEducation Centre. Four brand newshiny cycles and helmets have nowbeen delivered and can be seenzooming around the place. Ourstudents have enjoyed riding themaround The Special Education Centre.

 It is a great addition to theirphysiotherapy sessions! This week wetried them out on the cycle way atAdcock Park.
