Wondering how weddings are done outside of Hong Kong?

Here are five cultural traditions for inspiration. By Joanne Lee

Around the World in

Weddings5KOREAKoreans wear hanbok, their traditional dress, in special events and the wedding day is no exception. A wedding hanbok is mainly made of silk and embroidered with lucky characters and patterns, such as flowers, phoenixes and dragons. Korean brides wear a jeogori (an upper garment), floor-length skirt, wedding ribbons and a decorated crown called jokduri. The bridal hanbok is usually brightly colored. Grooms wear a samo cap, a long wedding suit and a pair of pants with a belt. The groom’s wedding attire is less colorful and embroidered than the bridal gowns.

JAPANModern wedding dresses are popular in Japan nowadays, but many Japanese couples still insist on wearing traditional garments. Japanese brides don a shiromuku (white kimono) with a tsunokakushi (white headgear, usually covering the bride’s styled top knot) during the wedding ceremony. The shiromuku is supposed to reflect purity, while the tsunokakushi is meant to “veil” the horns of jealousy, selfishness and ego. The uchikake is also a traditional wedding dress for Japanese brides. Unlike the shiromuku, the uchikake is usually colorful and fully embroidered, which makes the bride the most eye-catching female on her big day.

Japanese grooms wear a montsuki, a formal kimono, during the ceremony. The kimono is black and embroidered with family crests. For the bottom half, they wear black and white striped pants with socks and sandals.

Page 7: HK Wedding Guide 2015

WEDDING GUIDE 2015 7

INDIAIndian weddings are often incredibly colorful and carry a gold motif. Indian brides wear saris called panetar on the day of their wedding. Panetars are two-piece dresses which consist of an upper garment and a floor-length skirt, and are usually red and white in color with silver and gold embroidery. A bride wears gold accessories on her head, neck and arms, with henna drawn on her hands. A grooms wears a sherwani (long jacket with pants) which is also fully embroidered. The color of the sherwani usually matches the bride’s dress.

SCOTLANDScottish weddings are all about the tartan. Although many Scottish brides wear pure white bridal dresses, some of them pick wedding gowns with checkered accents. Other than the traditional red and green patterns, there are also tartans in other colors such as purple and gray. Unlike grooms in other countries who wear suits and tuxedos on their big day, Scottish grooms wear tartan kilts, a knee-length skirt-like garment. They then usually add on shirts, black vests and jackets with bowties or ties. Together with kilts and accessories—such as a sporran (pouch) and sgian dubh (a small knife)—grooms will fit themselves into knee-length socks and black leather shoes.

EGYPTEgypt has a large population of Muslims, and many Muslim brides wear long-sleeved wedding dresses and veils. Non-Muslim brides in Egypt often wear white wedding gowns, and some designs are reminiscent of kalasiris (the Ancient Egyptian sheath dress)—decorated with large, gold accessories to make the brides look bright on their wedding day. There are also wedding headpieces that the bride may wear to match with her gown. Grooms usually wear western-style suits or tuxedos.

CHEONGSAMThe cheongsam is a traditional Chinese formal dress worn in one of the several costume changes at the evening reception. Red is the traditional color for weddings, and most brides will choose a looser fit and a more demure side vent for a family occasion. For guests, however, the only limit is your own creativity—have fun with hemlines, sleeves, clasps and fabric—but stay away from red. If you’re looking for a modern take on the cheongsam, try Grace Choi’s designs at Yi Ming (Flat A, 8/F, Kimley Commercial Building, 142 Queen’s Rd. Central, 3111-2268, yi-ming.asia).

GOLD JEWELRYIn Chinese tradition, it is considered lucky for the bride’s family to give the bride gold jewelry for when she begins her married life. Sometimes this is bought new, and sometimes it is passed down from mother or grandmother to daughter. It can be a good opportunity for families to show off their wealth by loading their daughter down with necklaces and bangles. The tradition, however, is as pragmatic as it is showy—if the couple falls on hard times, the wife can sell her jewelry. Gold wedding jewelry is easy to come by in Hong Kong, but Emphasis Jewellery combines auspicious characters and symbols with style (outlets citywide including Shop 139, 1/F, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, 3107-0260, www.emphasis.com).

DO• Pace yourself at the evening reception, if it takes

place at a Chinese restaurant. At a Chinese wedding banquet, you can expect to be served up to 12 courses—sometimes more!

• Feel free to ask if you can take some of the leftovers home—it’s a sign of appreciation.

• Get ready to leave when oranges are served at the end of the banquet. Bear in mind that at the end of the meal, the happy couple will usually station themselves at the door and say goodbye to guests as they depart.

DON’T• Be surprised to see guests in jeans and

sneakers. While close family members may dress up, many will just come as they are.

• Wear black or white as both are considered unlucky. Similarly, leave all inauspicious topics at the door—Chinese weddings are rooted in superstition, and any talk of illness and death are very much off-limits.

LAI SEEIt is customary for guests to help pay for the banquet at a Chinese wedding. Wedding lai see is known as yun tsing, which translates roughly to “person-emotion.” Yun tsing is a quantifiable measure of how much you care for the newlyweds, and it’s also how those newlyweds are going to pay for the wedding banquet—so don’t skimp on this! Wedding receptions tend to be held either at a restaurant or a hotel. The basic rule for yun tsing is this: find out how much it costs for a table of 12. Then divide that sum by 12, and pay it. Generally, you’re talking a minimum of $500 to over $1,000 per person.

WEDDING CAKESWhile western weddings will have a cake at the reception to be shared among guests, Chinese wedding cakes are sent out alongside invitations. Many Chinese-style bakeries around town specialize in these cakes, which come in a variety of flavors, such as lotus seed paste, mung bean, walnut and assorted nuts. They are always given in boxes of four, six or eight to symbolize pairs. However, if you only give two cakes, it means that you are not planning to invite those guests to the wedding. If you’re having a western wedding but would like to add a Chinese touch, Kee Wah Bakery has a selection of individual heart-shaped wedding cakes as table gifts (outlets citywide including Shop 2, 8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 2520-2029, www.keewah.com).

Who said what and who’s with whom? Flip the page to find out.

JYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? His overly obvious statements. For example: “Can you pass me that silver tray? The one that is silver in color.” The most charming? The smile and the dad bod. If SO was an animal, what would they be?A bear who loves to eat and giggle. Winnie the Pooh, to be exact. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives?Him. He has a higher reserve of water and nutrition. How would you describe your SO? One word.Cuddly.

BYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? She’s too smart to handle sometimes. The most charming? Her full, beautiful smile. That’s what made me go talk to her.If SO was an animal, what would they be?I think she would be like a bear: warm and friendly yet dangerous at the same time. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives?Definitely me.How would you describe your SO? One word.Lively.

FYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? She loves to hear me fart. The most charming? She’s most charming when she lies on my chest and shoulders. If SO was an animal, what would they be?A mermaid. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives? Her! I will sing for her till I die…How would you describe your SO? One word.WOW!!!

EYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? Use of the word “jelly” as an abbreviation and in general. The most charming? Passion, authenticity and the distinctively strong family nose to enhance an already attractive face.If SO was an animal, what would they be?Black Labrador. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives? He would because together we’d support each other to live out our natural lifespans, and he is younger to begin with. How would you describe your SO? One word. Awesome.

AYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? His smoking. The most charming? His thick skin. If SO was an animal, what would they be? Cockroach. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives? Of course the cockroach. How would you describe your SO? One word. Cockroach.

IYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? His singing. He thinks that it works as relaxation therapy for me.The most charming? His charisma, or when he is not singing...If SO was an animal, what would they be?A monkey: clever and energetic. It’s also his Chinese zodiac sign. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives?Me! He won’t watch me die. How would you describe your SO? One word. I can try with one sentence: he’s a patient and warm-hearted guy.

HYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? She is messy! The most charming? She is very charismatic, her smile puts people at ease. I love watching her interact with new people, especially when she speaks in Cantonese. If SO was an animal, what would they be?In the mornings she is a crocodile for sure—very snappy! You’re stranded on an island. Who survives? If she was still the crocodile she would, but if we are rating survival skills, I would say me. She needs me to protect her from creepy crawlies. She even freaks out over cockroaches...How would you describe your SO? One word.Affectionate. We had to get two cats just so she could share the love! Her love and support mean so much to me.

GYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? Her cleanliness and OCD-like household organization. I’m the complete opposite, so most of our clashes are about cleaning. The most charming? She is so caring, loving and amazing. She’s so strong-willed, independent and is so passionate about what she does in all aspects of her life. She’s a real inspiration to me.If SO was an animal, what would they be?I have no idea. But I love penguins, so I’m going to say she’s a penguin. Or a wombat. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives?Mentally, she would survive the longest. She’s however allergic to just about every berry possible, so on a physical level I’d probably be the last one standing. I’ve also taken up fishing as a hobby, so I reckon I’d be pretty set for food. How would you describe your SO? One word.Might vastly fluctuate based on the day you ask, but let’s go with incredible for today.

DYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? She’s messy. In particular if taking something from a drawer she never closes it, just leaves it open. I cannot fathom why.The most charming? She’s the most thoughtful person I know. She doesn’t forget people’s names. Me on the other hand...If SO was an animal, what would they be?A Chicken. A little chicken, to be precise. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives? She would: I would make sure of it.How would you describe your SO? One word.Gorgeous.

CYour Significant Other’s most annoying trait? He finds it perfectly acceptable to sleep diagonally across the bed. The most charming? He makes me laugh with his silly jokes and songs (he makes up a new song almost everyday). If SO was an animal, what would they be?A lion, because he eats everything in sight. You’re stranded on an island. Who survives? Definitely him. He can create a map of the island when he’s gone around it once. I would just get lost and walk around in circles. How would you describe your SO? One word.Silly.

14 WEDDING GUIDE 2015

Pierre Pang met his fiancée, Fion Chio, at his first job out of university. They started out as friends, but Pang realized how

much he had fallen for the lady when before he knew it, he had put everything—including his career—on hold to help her with an art project that took six months to complete. Once he became aware of his feelings, he wasted no time in making his intentions clear. Ever the creative type, Pang devised some unbelievably painstaking ways to show his love. Here are some of the most adorable—and outrageous—moves he pulled.

Using a supermarket receipt to compose a declaration of love“I bought some items from the supermarket where the names or brands contained the words I needed to construct my message,” Pang says. “I made sure the cashier scanned the items in the order that I needed them. So when the receipt was printed, I was able to fold

it along the diagonal and have the words line up along the crease. If you read the words from top to bottom, it said, ‘I really like you’ in Cantonese.”

Sneaking romantic messages into HK Magazine coversBasically, most HK Mag covers since Pang started at the company in 2008 somehow refer back to the romance between Pang and Chio. If you look carefully at one of our most popular covers from 2010, featuring the Blue House in Wan Chai, there is a very blurry couple walking along the street in the bottom right corner. Yup, that’s the two lovebirds, painted by Pang himself. In HK Mag’s landmark 1,000th issue, one of the colorful banners carries Chio’s Chinese name loud and proud. And then there are the cute animal-face couples that have snuck their way into crevices, clouds and anything else Pang can think of, issue after issue. Pang has been using HK covers as a clever

game of Where’s Waldo with his love, right in front of our clueless eyes.

Selling a painting and using half the proceeds to procure a diamondOnce Pang knew Chio was “the one,” he could think of no greater way to profess his dedication than to create a painting, sell it, then use half of the profit to buy a glittering rock for his Juliet. Romantic? Yes. Practical? Hell yes. Take note, future Romeos!

Pierre Pang and Fion Chio will be getting married in 2016.

The supermarket receipt, when folded diagonally, reads “I really like you” in Cantonese.

HK Mag’s 1,000th issue features Chio and Pang, and Chio’s Chinese name on a banner.

16 WEDDING GUIDE 2015

How did you two meet?DH: It’s quite funny, but a few of the girls from Christing’s school dated a few of the guys from my school so we met through those couples. It was a lot of group outings and holidays before we actually started going out.

Where did you meet?CC: We were both in England at the time. I was living in London and Dan was in Brighton. We met at a friend’s birthday party out in the countryside.

How long did it take before you became a couple?DH: We were friends for about a year before we became a couple, so we knew each other quite well by then and were already pretty close.

How long did it take before you decided to tie the knot?DH: Not long at all. About two years.

Christing, how did you know he was The One?CC: We were young, but that is the age you start making big decisions about what you want to do with your life. It was obvious we wanted to be a big part of each other’s future, so we chose a path together rather than separately.

Why do some marriages succeed and some marriages fail?DH: We are very open with each other and are best friends. We can argue but can’t go more than an hour or two without talking. Being that close is what makes us last as a couple.

CC: I think it’s important to have a strong friendship outside of being a couple. The fact that he gets me and is the one I enjoy being around the most is what makes our relationship strong. It’s also respect for each other and knowing what the other person needs.

What’s the most difficult thing about maintaining a relationship?DH: You can never be selfish—especially if you have children. Decisions are always made together, so without compromise a relationship doesn’t work. There’s a lot of give and take and not always getting your own way.

What is the one thing that can ruin a relationship?CC: Not thinking about the other person and respecting what is important to them. We always support each other’s dreams and go out of our way to understand each other’s point of view. I think without mutual respect and support it can be hard to stay in any kind of relationship.

What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done for your spouse?DH: We aren’t the conventional romantic types but always go out of our way to celebrate each other by doing things together we know we both love. We always plan vacations for our birthdays and anniversaries and make sure to have date nights several times a week. It’s all about spending quality time together.

CC: Dan is such a gentleman. He walks me everywhere and helps carry my bags. Even if

Happily married for 10 years, bloggers Christing Chang and Daniel Haddad

dish on date nights, communication and keeping romance alive.

HappilyEver After

I’m just going to meet my friends, he’ll walk me to the bar and then go home. If it’s raining he’ll meet me at the MTR station with an umbrella. He knows what I crave for lunch or my favorite coffee and always goes out of his way to make sure I have these things every day. I’m literally treated like a princess. We aren’t a flowers-and-chocolates type of couple but I think the fact that he goes out of his way for me is romantic.

Are there any hobbies the two of you share?DH: We are both foodies and love to travel, so we eat and travel a lot together. Those two passions have always bonded us.

What do you think is the most crucial element to maintaining a healthy relationship? DH: Talking to each other. Don’t just sit in front of the TV and zone out or go to bed without asking how the other person’s day was and actually listening.

CC: Making time for each other no matter how busy you are and not letting life get in the way. It can be easy to become lazy in a relationship, so we love putting aside a few hours each day where it’s just the two of us talking and laughing about everything and anything.

A budget of $200,000 is perfect for about 60-80 guests. There are several government venues that can be considered for your ceremony, including gardens, parks or beaches. If you regularly attend a local church, you probably will have considered getting married there as well.

For the reception, a restaurant can be rented out depending on the type of dinner you want to have. If looking for a traditional Chinese banquet, most hotels have smaller ballrooms and restaurants have function/private rooms. There are good restaurants in Tsim Sha Tsui, at iSquare for example, that offer stunning views and great food. For a western-style venue, alternatives to the basic restaurant set-up include Butcher’s Club Deli or Mavericks on Lantau, which also offers gorgeous beach views.

Also keep in mind a lunch can be a more cost-effective option! For additional services like floral decor, entertainment and

transportation, we suggest setting aside about $50,000. Themes can easily be incorporated into this budget, and can be as simple as choosing a favorite color and having simple decor to match. Some venues even include options to choose from. Bliss Creations has created boho chic as well as vintage French themes—all at a very reasonable price.

For photography, hair and make-up, about $25,000 should be set aside for quality vendors. In regards to wedding attire, we suggest renting the dress and tux as this can be a much cheaper option for as little as $5,000. Rings are an additional cost that can vary greatly.

When dealing with a limited budget, we suggest cutting your guestlist down to create a warm and intimate environment for your closest friends and family. Bliss Creations suggests a beautiful ceremony in Kowloon Park followed by a stunning dinner overlooking the city. A three- to four-course menu with wine, simple decor and the entire Hong Kong skyline as a backdrop will really wow your guests.

WEDDING GUIDE 2015 21

Planning a wedding in Hong Kong can be relatively straightforward compared to other places, mainly because the work culture ingrained among people means things happen when they are supposed to!

You can therefore confidently leave the entire planning in the hands of professionals who can guide you through the process, shortlist vendors and manage the whole event. This will save you a lot of time and money as they will recommend reliable sources to get the job done according to the budget.

Another option, should you have the time, is to scout for the vendors yourself and have someone help you just manage the event on the day.

Hong Kong has ample options to choose from when it comes to weddings: from banquet halls or private clubs which allow you to rent their functions rooms, to picturesque Repulse Bay or Discovery Bay. Depending on the time of the year and the number of attendees, you could book a function room at a five-star hotel, which gives a grander feel.

You can easily accommodate 100-150 people within this budget. A four-course meal or a decent buffet spread can be had, depending on the setting of your choice. You could also splurge $20,000 on your own customized wedding gown.

A good planner should be able to incorporate any theme according to the budget by using certain elements based on the theme, whether it’s “An Evening in Paris” or “Enchanted Forest.” Use flowers available during your wedding season for your floral arrangement, keeping in mind the theme. Props according to the theme can also created.

A tip to save costs: always confirm services long before the event, as prices increase as the event gets closer. Whether it’s to book AV production, the décor or the wedding gown itself, vendors often look for reasons to mark up the costs when they know you are in need of it urgently.

My budget is $500K. Tell me how I can plan a wedding in Hong Kong.

PRIVATE CLUBSMany members-only clubs in Hong Kong double up as gorgeous wedding venues. The United Services Recreation Club, The Hilltop Country Club, The Aberdeen Marina Club and The Helena May are just a few examples. Ask around and see if you can score yourself a deal through a member-friend or maybe even through signing up as a member yourself.

THE ABERDEEN MARINA CLUB 8 Shum Wan Rd., Aberdeen, 2555-8321, www.aberdeenmarinaclub.com. This club is managed by the Shangri-La. The biggest draw here is the range of packages that accommodate both Chinese and Western-style weddings, with prices starting at $10,880 per table or $960 per person. With views of the swimming pool, the venue can seat up to 336 for a banquet.

THE GRAND STAGE 2/F, Western Market, 323 Des Voeux Rd., Central, Sheung Wan, 2815-2311, www.clubdining.com.hk.While the décor’s a little cheesy, there’s no denying the beautiful location of this excellent Chinese restaurant. This location seats a maximum of 40 tables, or 25 if you’re looking for a buffet. Located in the historic Western Market in Sheung Wan, the bare brickwork and lofty ceilings hark back to colonial days.

THE PEAK LOOKOUT121 Peak Rd., The Peak, 2849-1000, www.epicurean.com.hk. Classically romantic and packed with charm, The Peak Lookout is an extremely popular wedding venue, thanks in no small part to its beautiful garden terrace, paved with flagstones and boasting immaculately maintained greenery. The venue itself is capable of seating up to 320 guests, and can help provide live entertainment and decoration.

THE STAR FERRY 2118-6120, www.starferry.com.hk. This decades-old fleet is a Hong Kong icon, so for a true city experience, have your wedding ceremony on the water surrounded by Hong Kong’s twinkling lights. With capacity for up to 280 guests, it’s also perfect for larger weddings.

URBAN EXPLORERS For a mix of city and ocean—with some exotic food and culture thrown in for good measure—Okinawa is a great bet. The quirky southernmost island in Japan has a little bit of everything. Shop for pottery in downtown Naha, go hiking around Cape Medo, island hop across the Kerama Islands or relax in a five-star resort in Nago. An open-air property with stunning views across the ocean, the Ritz-Carlton Okinawa is one of the only luxury resorts on the island. The spa, restaurants, pools, rooms and views make for a lovely retreat for newlyweds. From $2,133. 1343-1, Kise, Nago, Okinawa, (+81) 980-43-5555, www.ritzcarlton.com.

BEACH BUMSIf your idea of a perfect vacation is to plop down on the beach for a week, then the Maldives may be your golden ticket to uninterrupted sunbathing. Most of the hotels in the famous archipelago have a private island to call their own. But that means you have to choose wisely since you’ll be stuck with that plot of sand. Check out the Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, which has an idyllic home in the Noonu Atoll. Of the 221 ocean-front villas, there are 70 over-water bungalows as well as a slew of water-based activities and 14 restaurants and bars—so hopefully your taste buds don’t get bored. ANIMAL LOVERSOne of the most underrated destinations in Asia, Sri Lanka is at the top of the list when it comes to variety. You can go from the capital of Colombo down to historic Galle in just over an hour, and then continue on to the pristine southern coast and up to the tea country. For those keen to spot some wildlife, there are plenty of opportunities: blue whales in Mirissa, leopards in Yala National Park, butterflies at Adam’s Peak and elephants in Dambulla. Start the trip off right with a luxurious, heritage experience at the Amangalla in Galle, where you’ll experience the best of both worlds: colonial charm and modern amenities. And later head up the Ceylon Tea Trails, which has several impeccable properties scattered across the heart of Sri Lanka’s sprawling tea country. Amangalla: from $5,820. 10 Church St., Galle Fort, Sri Lanka, (+94) 91-2-233388. Tea Trails: US$600 ($4,651), various locations, www.teatrails.com.

ECO-ADVENTURERSPicturesque Palawan in the Philippines has it all: beautiful beaches, outdoorsy activities, water sports, limestone cliffs and fantastic food. For a taste of it all: check out El Nido’s luxurious string of resorts dotted across the archipelago. The four eco-friendly wellness retreats combine natural decor with top-notch service. Not only is it a great home base, but they put on “Be Green” cocktail hours and provide lots of cool excursions like kayaking through hidden caves, snorkeling and scuba diving. From PHP18,000 ($3,257), www.elnidoresorts.com.

KOTA KINABALU Pros: With a little bit of leisure and a lot of outdoorsy fun, Kota Kinabalu is a great option that’s not too much of a hassle. The western-facing beaches will surprise you with some of the most startling sunsets you’ve ever seen, while adventurous types will love a sunrise climb to the top of Mount Kinabalu.

Cons: The airport is quite far from some of the best resorts and the downtown area doesn’t have much going on aside from an outdoor food market.

Hot Address: With a beach that goes on forever and easy access to Mount Kinabalu, Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa (www.shangri-la.com/kotakinabalu/rasariaresort) has both convenience and charm going for it. It’s among the best resorts in Kota Kinabalu and the wedding services are made to match.

BALIPros: Thanks to the healthy villa scene in Bali, you can hire out a whole villa for the bridal party. Check Airbnb (www.airbnb.com) for some inspiration. It’s a popular destination so the wedding industry is thriving and reliable--not too many surprises to account for if you pick a reputable planner. You can have your pick of scenery—cliffside views, beaches, vineyards, temples and jungle.

Cons: Of course, Bali is a hotspot for weddings and everyday tourists alike. You’ll have to put up with some terrible traffic at peak times and the weather can be unpredictable if you dare to schedule a wedding during shoulder season.

Hot Address: For a dramatic destination wedding, look into the likes of Tirtha Luhur, which has clifftop views and and a gorgeous glass chapel. You can even say your vows at twilight, with flaming torches and lanterns lighting up the sky.

Say Yes to the AddressIf you’re set on exchanging vows somewhere exotic, we’ve got some tips

on a few of the region’s most popular wedding destinations. By Kate Springer

KOH SAMUIPros: It’s an easy direct flight from Hong Kong and has some of the region’s most exquisite venues. Since it’s in Thailand, you know the food is going to be fantastic, and there is plenty to do around the island after the big day winds down. You have the option to skip the resort wedding and go for a more low-key villa vibe instead.

Cons: It’s hard to find a spot of sand on the island’s main beach drags and getting around can be a nightmare unless you arrange for a private driver. The properties here tend to be more established and thus more expensive, so you’re not going to get as much bang for your buck.

Hot Address: Have a blowout bash at the island’s most regal address: the Four Seasons Koh Samui (www.fourseasons.com/kohsamui) knows how to put on a perfect wedding and you’ll get to exchange vows in a picture-perfect private grotto.
