1971: Raymond Tomlinson, U.S. programmer, allegedly sent “QWERTYUIOP” as the �rst network email, using the @ symbol to denote sending messages from one device to another 1976: Queen Elizabeth was one of the �rst heads of state to send an e-mail using ARPANET (the computer network that eventually morphed into the internet) from her account with user name “HME2”1978: Online advertising was born through e-mail: a marketer from Digital Equipment Corporation sent an email to most of the ARPANET’s American west coast users, advertising new model of a DEC computer1985: Government and military employees, students and academic professionals were common email users in the mid-1980s1991: World Wide Web was born1997: Microsoft purchased Hotmail for approximately $400 million1998: “Spam” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary 2003: Blackberry 850 and 857 revolutionized mobile platform by concentrating on email2008: President Barack Obama became the �rst president to use mobile email and admit his addiction to his BlackBerry2011: A study �nds the worst email passwords are “password” and “123456”.
