Cultural HistoryA Concise Introduction

Alessandro Arcangeli, University of Verona, Italy

In this short and accessible introduction Alessandro Arcangeli introduces students to a cultural history as a sub-discipline and suggests that cultural history should be defined by its approach, not by its object. Introducing the reader to the ’fuzzy’ concept of cultural history, Arcangeli describes it as concerned with the sense men and women from the past gave to the world

they lived in and to their action in it. He also explains how cultural and social history have been largely intertwined, but a story of love and hate, and summarises the relationship between them.

Archangeli reconstructs the key steps in the history of cultural history, from its nineteenth-century version onwards. The book then outlines some of the key categories that have functioned as research tools for specific historiographical traditions within the broader field, such as intellectual history, the history of ideas and concepts, of mentalities, of symbols and representations, of languages and discourses.

Cultural History maps the territory most effectively and characteristically explored by cultural historians from the respect of the topics they examine, uncovering unfamiliar objects of enquiry and shedding new light on old questions: for instance on gender, the family and sexuality; the body, senses and emotions; material culture and consumption; images, the media and communication. Including an appendix of biographies of a number of cultural historians and a further reading section, this is the perfect introduction for all students of cultural history.

Selected Contents: 1. A Fuzzy Field of Enquiry 2. Between Tradition and Innovation 3. Forking Paths 4. Territories Appendix. Bibliography. Index

Series: Doing... Series

’Doing History should be compulsory reading for anyone interested in how the organised study of the past has been rethought over the past twenty or so years. It is the kind of introductory/survey text that has been needed.’ – Alun Munslow, University of Chichester and the UK editor of Rethinking History

History as an academic discipline has dramatically changed over the last few decades and has become much more exciting and varied as a result of ideas from other disciplines, the influence of postmodernism and historians’ incorporation of their own theoretical reflections into their work. The way history is studied at university level can vary greatly from history at school or as represented in the media and Doing History bridges that gap. Aimed at undergraduate students of history this is the ideal introduction to studying history as an academic subject at university.

Doing History presents the ideas and debates that shape how we do history today, covering arguments about the nature of historical knowledge and the function of historical writing, whether we can really ever know what happened in the past, what sources historians depend on, and whether historians’ versions of history have more value than popular histories.

This practical and accessible introduction to the discipline introduces students to these key discussions, familiarises them with the important terms and issues, equips them with the necessary vocabulary and encourages them to think about, and engage with, these questions. Clearly structured and accessibly written, it is an essential volume for all students embarking on the study of history.

Understanding Medieval Primary SourcesUsing Historical Sources to Discover Medieval Europe

Edited by Joel t. Rosenthal, State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA

Medieval society created many kinds of records and written material which differ considerably, giving us such sources as last wills, sermons, manorial accounts, or royal biographies. Primary sources are an exciting way for students to engage with the past and draw their own ideas about life in the medieval period.

Understanding Medieval Primary Sources is a collection

of essays that will introduce students to the key primary sources that are essential to studying medieval Europe. The sources are divided into two categories: the first part treats some of the many generic sources that have been preserved, such as wills, letters, royal and secular narratives and sermons. Chapter by chapter each expert author illustrates how they can be used to reveal details about medieval history. The second part focuses on areas of historical research that can only be fully discovered by using a combination of primary sources, covering fields such as maritime history, urban history, women’s history and medical history.

Understanding Medieval Primary Sources will be an invaluable resource for any student embarking on medieval historical research.

History and Material CultureA Student’s Guide to Approaching Alternative Sources

In History and Material Culture, Karen Harvey embarks upon a discussion about material culture – considering objects, often those found surrounding us in day to day life, as sources, which can help historians develop new interpretations and new knowledge about the past.

Reading Primary SourcesThe Interpretation of Texts from Nineteenth and Twentieth Century History

Edited by Miriam dobson and Benjamin Ziemann

Reading Primary Sources is an up-to-date introduction into the historical context of these different genres, the ways they should be read, the possible insights and results these sources offer and the pitfalls of their interpretation. All of the chapters push the reader beyond a conventional understanding of source texts as mere ’reflections’ of a given reality, instead fostering an

understanding of how each of the various genres has to be seen as a medium in its own right.

Oral History theoryLynn Abrams, University of Glasgow, UK

Oral history is increasingly acknowledged as a key tool for anyone studying the history of the recent past. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of oral history theory in an accessible format.

The book is structured around key themes, including the peculiarities of oral history, the study of the self, subjectivity and intersubjectivity, memory,

narrative, performance and power. Each chapter provides a clear and user-friendly explanation of the various theoretical approaches, illustrates them with examples from the rich field of published oral history, and makes suggestions for the practicing oral historian. There is also a glossary of key terms and concepts.

Combining the study of theoreticians with the observations of practitioners, and including extensive examples of oral history work from around the world, this book constitutes the first integrated explanation of oral history theory. It will be invaluable to experienced and novice oral historians, professionals, and students who are new to the discipline.

doing HistoryInvestigating With Children in Elementary and Middle Schools

Linda S. Levstik, University of Kentucky, USA and Keith C. Barton, Indiana University, USA

Now in its fourth edition, this popular text offers a unique perspective on teaching and learning history in the elementary and middle grades. Through case studies of teachers and students in diverse classrooms and from diverse backgrounds, it shows children engaging in authentic historical investigations, often in the

context of an integrated social studies curriculum.

The central assumption is that children can engage in valid forms of historical inquiry-collecting and data analysis, examining the perspectives of people in the past, considering multiple interpretations, and creating evidence-based historical accounts. In each chapter, the authors explain how the teaching demonstrated in the vignettes reflects basic principles of contemporary learning theory, thus providing specific examples of successful activities and placing them in a theoretical context that allows teachers to adapt and apply them in a wide variety of settings.

New in the fourth Edition:

• expanded coverage of world history in two new chapters

• integration of new technologies to support history instruction

• updated classroom examples, bibliographies, and references.

Selected Contents: Preface. 1. Past, Present, and Future: The Sociocultural Context for Studying History 2. It’s Not Just a Mishap: The Theory Behind Disciplined Inquiry 3. fifty Key Works of History and HistoriographyKenneth R. Stunkel, Monmouth University, USA

Series: Routledge Key Guides

Fifty Key Works of History and Historiography introduces some of the most important works ever written by those who have sought to understand, capture, query and interpret the past. The works covered include texts from ancient times to the present day and from different cultural traditions ensuring a wide variety of schools, methods and ideas are introduced. Each of the fifty texts represents at least one of six broad categories:

• early examples of historiography (e.g. Herodotus and Augustine)

• non-western works (e.g. Shaddad and Fukuzawa)

• ‘critical’ historiography (e.g. Mabillon and Ranke)

• history of minorities, neglected groups or subjects (e.g. Said and Needham)

• broad sweeps of history (e.g. Mumford and Hofstadter)

• problematic or unconventional historiography (e.g. Foucault and White).

American History Goes to the MoviesHollywood and the American Experience

W. Bryan Rommel Ruiz, The Colorado College in Colorado Springs, USA

Whether they prefer blockbusters, historical dramas, or documentaries, people learn much of what they know about history from the movies. In American History Goes to the Movies, W. Bryan Rommel-Ruiz shows how popular representations of historic events shape the way audiences understand the history of the United States, including American representations of

race and gender, and stories of immigration, especially the familiar narrative of the American Dream.

Using films from many different genres, American History Goes to the Movies draws together movies that depict the Civil War, the Wild West, the assassination of JFK, and the events of 9/11, from The Birth of a Nation and Gone with the Wind to The Exorcist and United 93, to show how viewers use movies to make sense of the past, addressing not only how we render history for popular enjoyment, but also how Hollywood’s renderings of America influence the way Americans see themselves and how they make sense of the world.

International Economic Relations since 1945Catherine R. Schenk, University of Glasgow, UK

The international economy since 1945 has endured dramatic changes in its balance of power, from the early period of prosperity for industrialised nations, to the 2008/9 global crisis. In this volume Catherine Schenk outlines these huge changes, examines how the world’s economic leaders have tried to organise and influence the international economy and presents the key frameworks in which international economic

China and the World since 1945An International History

Chi-kwan Mark, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK

The emergence of China as a dominant regional power with global influence is a significant phenomenon in the twenty-first century. Its origin could be traced back to 1949 when the Chinese Communist Party under Mao Zedong came to power and vowed to transform China and the world. After the ‘century of humiliation’, China was in constant search of a new identity on the world stage. From alliance with the Soviet

Union in the 1950s, China normalized relations with America in the 1970s and embraced the global economy and the international community since the 1980s. This book examines China’s changing relations with the two superpowers, Asian neighbours, Third World countries, and European powers.

China and the World since 1945 offers an overview of China’s involvement in the Korean War, the Sino-Soviet split, Sino-American rapprochement, the end of the Cold War, and globalization. It assess the roles of security, ideology, and domestic politics in Chinese foreign policy and provides a synthesis of the latest archival-based research on China’s diplomatic history and Cold War international history

This engaging new study examines the rise of China from a long-term historical perspective and will be essential to students of Chinese history and contemporary international relations.

Environmentalism since1945Gary Haq and Alistair Paul, both at Stockholm Environment Institute, University of York, UK

Today environmental issues are part of daily life, a feature of the contemporary world almost everyone now recognises. Modern environmentalism has promoted a way of speaking and thinking about the environment that was not possible or imaginable 50 years ago. Its legacy is reflected in science, in politics, economics and the arts.

This book charts the development of modern environmentalism, through images and ideas, as a reaction to modernity and as an influence on it. Modern environmentalism has taken many forms and followed different pathways. It spans reformist and radical ideas about what the world should look like as well as how change should be brought about.

Environmentalism since 1945 has a thematic chapter structure that illustrates how environmentalism has developed historically in relation to science, economics, political movements, global governance and popular culture. Each chapter provides a historical perspective, anchoring topics to real events, influential ideas, and prominent figures from the last 50 years which highlights important themes. An essential read for all those interested in the history of environmental politics.

forensic Medicine in Western SocietyA History

Katherine d. Watson, Oxford Brookes University, UK

The first book of its kind, Forensic Medicine in Western Society: A History draws on the most recent developments in the historiography, to provide an overview of the history of forensic medicine in the West from the medieval period to the present day. Taking an international, comparative perspective on the changing nature of the relationship between medicine, law and

society, it examines the growth of medico-legal ideas, institutions and practices in Britain, Europe (principally France, Italy and Germany) and the United States.

Following a thematic structure within a broad chronological framework, the book focuses on practitioners, the development of notions of ‘expertise’ and the rise of the expert, the main areas of the criminal law to which forensic medicine contributed, medical attitudes towards the victims and perpetrators of crime, and the wider influences such attitudes had. It thus develops an understanding of how medicine has played an active part in shaping legal, political and social change.

Including case studies which provide a narrative context to tie forensic medicine to the societies in which it was practiced, and a further reading section at the end of each chapter, Katherine D. Watson creates a vivid portrait of a topic of relevance to social historians and students of the history of medicine, law and crime.

Women in European Culture and SocietyGender, Skill and Identity from 1700

deborah Simonton, University of Southern Denmark

A new and major contribution to the field, Women in European Culture and Society is a transnational history of women in Europe from the beginning of the eighteenth century that pushes women’s history beyond national studies to create an integrated view of three hundred years of women in Europe. Using a longue durée, the book disentangles the accounts of industrialisation and bourgeois

femininity which tend to dominate women’s studies, and questions the dominant narratives of history.

Drawing on women’s own writing and cultural production, it presents women as agents of change as well as exploring cultural perceptions of women and the ways in which women have been have been represented by these discourses. It explicitly engages with how women contributed as practitioners to shaping the culture and society of western Europe.

By surveying and synthesising recent research covering such a long period, his book will help others to connect the dots and draw conclusions of their own... this is a very important book... an excellent resource for teachers and students.’ – Warren C. Brown, English

Introduction to Medieval Europe 300–1550Wim Blockmans and Peter Hoppenbrouwers

’An inspiring and magisterial survey of twelve centuries of Medieval History. Written with verve and flair but never patronizing or too simplifying, it provides an up-to-date synthesis of recent scholarship on the Middle Ages by two outstanding dutch medievalists.’ – Elizabeth van

Houts, Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, UK

’I believe this is the best medieval history textbook I have read and I will enjoy using it on my medieval history courses.’ – William H. TeBrake, University of Maine, USA

Surveying the years between 300 and 1550, this outstanding textbook brings a long, complex and varied period of European history vividly to life.

Covering themes as diverse as barbarian migrations, the growth of cities, kingship, religious reform, the Crusades, commerce, the Black Death, and the intellectual and cultural life of the Middle Ages, it explores the driving forces behind the formation of medieval society and the directions in which it developed and changed.

This inspiring textbook:

• provides a clear and stimulating survey of medieval history over more than a thousand years

• covers all the main issues and themes within a clear interpretive framework

• includes illustrated, focused case studies in each chapter to assist learning, covering topics such as Roman Law, architecture, taxation, advances in medicine, the indulgence trade in the Church and a merchant’s manual

• gives wide geographical coverage and is richly illustrated with over a hundred photos, engravings, maps, tables and figures

• is written by two leaders in their field with the most up-to-date research and reading.

Taking a world that, by modern standards, was technologically underdeveloped, poor, unjust, violent, and dominated by figures of almost mythical proportions such as Saint Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Joan of Arc, Wim Blockmanns and Peter Hoppenbrouwers have produced a textbook that should, without doubt, take its rightful place on the reading list of any student of European history.

An Environmental History of the Middle AgesThe Crucible of Nature

John Aberth

This is the first survey of attitudes towards the environment in the Middle Ages, which was a critical and formative time for Western approaches to our natural surroundings. This was a time of fundamentally competing perspectives on the environment, with the belief that natural resources were put on earth for man’s exploitation ’at war’ with the view that saw humankind as a steward of God’s creation. Taking the entire medieval period from 500 to 1500 across the whole of Europe, from England and Spain across to the Baltic and Eastern Europe and focusing on the key areas of air, water, earth, wood and animals, John Aberth sheds new light on the medieval mindset which will be essential reading for all those interested in the Middle Ages.

the Beast WithinAnimals in the Middle Ages

Joyce Salisbury

Praise for the first edition:

’...a brave and fascinating exploration of an area that has so far been rather neglected by both historical and literary critics. The Beast Within provides extremely valuable information on the legal and cultural background of the human-animal relationship .’ – Studies in the Age of Chaucer

This important book offers a unique exploration of the use of and attitude towards animals from the fourth to the fourteenth centuries.

The Beast Within explores the varying roles of animals as property, food and sexual objects, and the complex relationship that this created with the people and world around them. Joyce E. Salisbury takes an interdisciplinary approach to the subject, weaving a historical narrative that includes economic, legal, theological, literary and artistic sources. The book shows how by the end of the Middle Ages the lines between humans and animals had blurred completely, making us recognise the beast that lay within us all.

the Crusades and the Near EastCultural Histories

Edited by Conor Kostick, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

Tackling such questions as whether medicinal and architectural innovations came to Europe as a direct result of the Crusades, and why and how peace treaties and intermarriages were formed between the different cultures, this distinguished group of contributors reveal how the Holy Wars led on the one hand to a reinforcement of the beliefs and identities of each side, but

on the other to a growing level of cultural exchange and interaction. This volume breaks new ground in not only exploring the conflict between the Christian and the Muslim worlds, but also the impact of this conflict on the cultural evolution of European and Near Eastern thought and practices. Utilising the latest scholarship and original studies of the sources, this survey sheds new light on the cultural realities of East-West relations and marks a new departure for studies of the crusades.

A History of the Church in the Middle Agesf. donald Logan

In this fascinating survey, F. Donald Logan introduces the reader to the Christian church, from the conversion of the Celtic and Germanic peoples to the discovery of the New World. He reveals how the church unified the people of Western Europe as they worshipped with the same ceremonies and used Latin as the language of civilised communication. From the remote, rural parish church, where simple peasants came to pray, to the magnificent urban cathedrals, where choirs chanted the psalms, A History of the Church in the Middle Ages explores the role of the church as a central element in determining a thousand years of history.

This new edition brings the book right up to date with recent scholarship, and includes an expanded introduction, which considers other faiths, particularly Judaism and Islam, and their interaction with the Christian church. The book also includes extra material on Islam, and on popular piety, as well as a revised selection of maps and illustrations. The second edition will also be supported by a companion website, which will include questions and other supporting materials for students and lecturers.

’One of the best introductions to this period I have seen.’ – Retha Warnicke, Arizona State University, USA

’didactically, it is all brilliantly executed, especially compared to some

The European World 1500–1800 provides a concise and authoritative textbook for the centuries between the Renaissance and the French Revolution. Structured in four parts dealing with socio-economic, religious, cultural and political issues, it adopts a broad geographical perspective: Western and Central Europe receive particular attention, but dedicated chapters also explore the wider global context. Thematic priorities include social structures, Reformation change, expanding cultural horizons and the emergence of the modern state.

CalvinMichael Mullett, Lancaster University, UK

Series: Routledge Historical Biographies

John Calvin (1509–1564) is one of the most important figures in religious history. Sitting on the cusp of the medieval and early modern world, he was centre stage during the Reformation. In this new biography, Michael Mullett introduces us to this most important figure, tying his life together with that of Martin Luther, but also valuing his individual contribution and influence.

From what Calvin himself described as ‘humble beginnings’, he became one of the most influential theologians of the Protestant Reformation. The influence of his teachings and the development of Christian theology into what was to become known as Calvinism, swept across Europe, reinforcing the Reformation’s radical break from the Catholic Church. John Calvin was ‘a mighty and formidable man, able to achieve the vast amount he did because of his unbending conviction of his rightness’.

Mullett explores the significant influences on Calvin and his work, and the relationships that he formed along his reforming path. Looking not only at the impact of Calvin throughout the early modern period and the importance of his work to contemporaries, Mullett also assesses the impact that Calvin’s works have had in shaping the modern world, and the relevance that they still have today.

the Boston MassacreA History with Documents

Neil L. york, Brigham Young University, USA

’this anthology is successful both as a source book for established practitioners and as a classroom text for teachers. It perhaps will catch the attention of many not ordinarily drawn to this era. Recommended.’ – Choice

On March 5, 1770, after being harassed for two years during their occupation of Boston, British soldiers finally lost control, firing into a mob of

rioting Americans, killing several of them, including Crispus Attucks, a runaway slave and sailor, the first African American patriot killed. The aftermath of this ‘massacre’ led to what was eventually the American Revolution. The importance of the event grew, as it was used for political purposes, to stoke the fires of rebellion in the colonists and to show the British in the most unflattering light.

The Boston Massacre gathers together the most important primary documents pertaining to the incident, along with images, anchored together with a succinct yet thorough introduction, to give students of the Revolutionary period access to the events of the massacre as they unfolded. Included are newspaper stories, the official transcript of the trial, letters, and maps of the area, as well as consideration of how the massacre is remembered today.

Converging WorldsCommunities and Cultures in Colonial America, A Sourcebook

Edited by Louise A. Breen, Kansas State University, USA

The field of colonial American history is an incredibly exciting area of study, but one that is often difficult for undergraduates to grasp, as there is so much going on. Over the last 25 years, there have been increasingly specialized studies done on particular colonial regions or themes, but there is no consensus on the narrative of early America, which makes the study of the period seemingly disjointed for students.

This book is the primary document sourcebook accompanying the Converging Worlds text. Each chapter author of the text hand-picked documents that go along with the chapter they’ve written. However, it would be just as easy for an instructor to use the sourcebook on its own, since there will also be a general introduction and section introductions framing the documents.

Themes of the American Civil War offers a timely and useful guide to this vast topic for a new generation of students. Additions to the second edition include a new introduction – added to the current introduction by James McPherson – a chapter on gender, as well as information on the remembrance of the war (historical memory). the American Culture of WarA History of US Military Force from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom

Adrian R. Lewis, University of Kansas, USA

’An outstanding volume that is sure to be of interest to faculty and cadets, as well as historians and national security professionals far and wide.’ – Lance Betros, Colonel, US Army

’The American Culture of War is a first-rate study that asks big questions and provides answers that are of value to American and non-American scholars alike. It makes a major contribution to the developing cultural approach to military history.’ – Jeremy Black, University of Exeter, UK

’The American Culture of War is a striking and magisterial tour de force.’ – Gregory J.W. Urwin, Temple University, USA

The American Culture of War presents a sweeping critical examination of every major American war since 1941: the Second World War, Korea, Vietnam, and the First and Second Persian Gulf Wars, including the current war in Afghanistan. As he carefully considers the cultural forces that surrounded each military engagement, Adrian Lewis offers an original and provocative look at the motives people and governments used to wage war, the discord among military personnel, the flawed political policies that guided military strategy, and the civilian perceptions that characterized each conflict. With each chapter similarly structured to allow the reader to draw parallels between the wars, Lewis deftly traces the evolution of US military strategy since the Second World War. Timely, incisive, and comprehensive, and completely updated for the second edition, including five new chapters, The American Culture of War is a unique and invaluable survey of over sixty years of American military history.

fighting the future WarAn Anthology of Science Fiction War Stories, 1914–1945

Edited by frederic Krome

The period between World War I and World War II was one of intense change. Everything was modernizing, including our technology for making war – witness machine guns, trench warfare, biological agents, and ultimately The Final Solution. This modernization and eye toward the future was reflected in many facets of pop culture, including fashion, home-wear

design, and the popular literature of the time. In sci-fi, a specific genre emerged – that of the ‘future war.’

Frederic Krome has collected many of these future war stories together for the first time in Fighting the Future War. Bolstered by a comprehensive introduction, and introduced with historical information about both the authors of the stories and the historical time period, these stories provide a view into the field of pulp science fiction writing, the issues that informed the time period between the world wars, and the way people envisioned the wars of tomorrow. Revealing anxieties about society, technology, race and politics, the genre of the future war story is important material for students of history and literature.

Selected Contents: Fighting the Future War: Introduction 1. Hugo Gernsback and World War I 2. The Future War Story during World War I 3. The Inter-war Years and the Rise of the Airmen 4. The Ambivalence of Science: Technology and Armageddon 5. After the Future War 6. World War II

How We Are Changed by WarA Study of Letters and Diaries from Colonial Conflicts to Operation Iraqi Freedom

d.C. Gill

How We Are Changed by War examines our sense of ourselves through the medium of diaries and wartime correspondence, beginning with the colonists of the early seventeenth century, and ending with the diaries and letters from Iraqi war vets. The book tracks the effects of war in private writings regardless of the narrator’s historical era allowing the writers to ’speak’ to each other across time to

reveal a profound commonality of cultural experience. Finally, interpreting the narratives by how the writers conveyed the content adds a richer layer of meaning through the lenses of psychology and literary criticism, providing a model for any society to examine itself through the medium of its members’ informal writings.

Race and National PowerA Sourcebook of Black Civil Rights from 1862 to 1954

Christopher Waldrep, San Francisco State University, USA

In American history, students are taught about the three branches of government. Most of the time is spent learning about the Executive and the Legislative bodies, but the Judicial branch has had a monumental effect on the course of American history, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the area of civil rights.

Race and National Power: A Sourcebook of Black Civil Rights

from 1862 to 1954 gathers together a collection of primary documents on the history of law and civil rights, specifically in regard to race. The sources covered include key Supreme Court decisions, some opinions from other courts as well, and texts written by ordinary people – the victims and perpetrators of racism and the lawmakers who wrote the statutes the courts must interpret.

With helpful headnotes and introductions, Race and National Power: A Sourcebook of Black Civil Rights from 1862 to 1954 is the perfect resource for anyone studying legal history or race in America.

Race and Immigration in the United States is a collection of the very best of the new generation of scholarship in the field of immigration history published in the 1990s and 2000s. The best new scholars in the history of race and ethnicity have pointed out that the traditional Ellis Island model of immigrant assimilation is not adequate to understand American history. They suggest a more subtle model that does not exclude peoples of color from view, and does not treat the experiences of European immigrants as a template for the experiences of non-White migrants. Race makes a crucial difference and has done so throughout American history. This collection brings the insights of ethnic studies scholarship into history. It also keeps in view the fact that some people lived here first–that the first facts of immigration history are the genocide and dispossession of North America’s native peoples, and that they are relevant to the immigration story throughout much of American history.

Race and Immigration in the United States will be an essential collection for anyone studying race and ethnicity in American history.

Latin America since IndependenceA History with Primary Sources

Alexander dawson

Latin America since Independence begins with the assumption that our efforts to imagine a common past for nearly thirty countries are deeply problematic. Without losing sight of chronology or regional trends, this text offers glimpses of the Latin American past through eleven carefully selected stories. Each chapter introduces students to a specific historical issue, which in turn raises questions

about the history of the Americas as a whole. Key themes include: Race and Citizenship, Inequality and Economic Development, Politics and Rights, Social and Cultural Movements, Globalization, and Violence and Civil Society.

The short, thematic chapters are bolstered by the inclusion of relevant primary documents – many translated for the first time – including advertisements and posters, song lyrics, political speeches, government documents, and more. Each chapter also includes timelines highlighting important dates and suggestions for further reading. A highly interactive companion website contains the full text of excerpted documents, extra images and timelines, film clips, and student review materials. Richly informative and highly readable, Latin America since Independence provides compelling accounts of this region’s past and present.

Origins of the Black AtlanticEdited by Laurent dubois, Duke University, USA and Julius S. Scott, University of Michigan, USA

Series: Rewriting Histories

Until relatively recently, comparatively little attention was paid to the perspectives, daily experiences, hopes, and especially the political ideas of the enslaved who played such a central role in the making of the Atlantic world. Over the past decades, however, huge strides have been made in the study of the history of slavery and emancipation in the Atlantic world. Origins of the

Black Atlantic collects some of the key contributions to this growing body of scholarship, showing a range of methodological approaches, that can be used to understand and reconstruct the lives of these enslaved people.

Understanding the VictoriansPolitics, Culture and Society in Nineteenth Century Britain

Susie Steinbach, Hamline University, USA

The Victorian era was a time of dramatic change. During this period Britain ruled the largest empire on earth, witnessed the expansion of democracy, and developed universal education and mass print culture. Both its imperial might and the fact that it had industrialised and urbanised decades before any other nation allowed it to dominate world politics and culture in many ways for the

better part of the nineteenth century.

Understanding the Victorians paints a vivid portrait of the era, combines broad survey with close analysis, and introduces students to the critical debates taking place among historians today. It emphasises class, gender, and racial and imperial positioning as constitutive of human relations, including the social, economic, cultural, political, and legal. Starting with the Queen Caroline Affair in 1820 and coming right up to the start of World War I in 1914, Steinbach thematic chapters take in, amongst other things, the economy, gender, religion, the history of science and ideas, material culture and sexuality.

With a clear introduction outlining the key themes of the period, including the issue of periodization, and with chronologies and suggestions for further reading, this is the ideal companion for all students of the nineteenth century.

Selected Contents: Introduction 1. Society and Class 2. The Economy 3. Politics, High and Low 4. Gender 5. Monarchy 6. Race, Empire and National Identity 7. Religion 8. History of Ideas 9. Britain and World War IAlan G.V. Simmonds, Hull University, UK

The First World War appears as a fault line in Britain’s twentieth-century history. Between August 1914 and November 1918 the titanic struggle against Imperial Germany and her allies consumed more people, more money and more resources than any other conflict Britain had hitherto experienced. For the first time, it opened up a Home Front that stretched into all

parts of the British polity, society and culture, touching the lives of every citizen regardless of age, gender and class. Air raids brought violence and destruction to British homesteads; women took on jobs previously held by men; and the King grew vegetables in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

These momentous events were the source of profound and radical change in British society; and yet, at the same time, the conflict left long-standing institutions and social attitudes largely untouched. The First World War shook Britain to the core, but remarkably, post-Armistice Britain still retained traces of an earlier outlook and a Victorian consciousness. It is this tension between the forces of change and the forces of tradition that is examined in this book.

In chapters looking at industry and the economy, the government in operation during the war, women’s work, farming, popular culture and propaganda, Alan G.V. Simmonds focuses on the war as a civilian rather than a military experience, interpreting the military dimension as a background for examining the conflict as a political, social and cultural experience.

Including key primary documents, personal anecdotes, testimonies and illustrations, a timeline of major events and a key readings section, this is an essential book for all students of the first world war.

Selected Contents: 1. Summer’s End 2. For King and Country 3. The Industry of Conflict 4. The Eclipse of Party Government 5. Workplace Women 6. Family and Society 7. Food, Farming and Rural Society 8. A Question of Propaganda 9. War Culture 10. After Rejoicing
