This gorgeously illustrated book from Dieter Braun will enthrall readers with its biologically accurate representations and witty descriptions of the many varied animals found in the northern hemisphere. Presented in a large, gift book format, this encyclopaedia of wild beasts is a volume to treasure.

Dieter Braun is a freelance illustrator and children’s book author from Hamburg, Germany. He studied Communciation Design at the Folkwangschule in Essen, and his clients incude international publications like Time Magazine, The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, Newsweek and many more.

Polar Bear // Ursus maritimus

Native to the northern polar region, polar bears are the largest land-dwelling carnivores in the world. They are also in their element in the water as they are excellent long distance swimmers and can travel five kilometres an hour, but prefer to hunt their prey on land. Different kinds of seals and young or weakened walruses should be wary when the ‘white giant’ is hungry. Incidentally, its coat is not strictly speaking white: it only appears that way because of the reflection of the sun. The hairs of its outer coat are actually hollow and translucent and the skin underneath is black.

6. Hold your star gazer up to the light or a window, close one eye and use the other eye to look through the tube. Alternatively, at night, remove the eyepiece, turn off the lights, and shine a flashlight through the tube to illuminate the constellations on your bedroom wall.

Rotate the tube so that you can see how the star patterns look in the real night sky as the Earth rotates on its axis. Enjoy the show!

2. Cut out the star maps and the eyepiece on the back flap.

3. Ask an adult to help you cut out the viewing hole in the middle of the eyepiece. Tape the eyepiece to the bottom of the tube.

5. Skewer the white dot at the top of each star map and

push the constellation card against the open end of the

tube.

4. Use a pin or compass to poke holes in the constellations, where each star appears.

Stick the cocktail stick or skewer to the side of the tube, with the sharp end jutting out slightly at the top.

With a star gazer, you can explore the night sky from the comfort of your own bedroom!
